"I sold the quad lfo and decided to combine my Synthesizers.com Q110 & Q117 into the yusynth panel instead of building the kit. I used a little bit of my wife’s nail polish remover to adjust the panel and had to get rid of the manual gate on the Q117 and the output volume on the Q110(used a jumper to set it to full). Other than that I am quite happy with the outcome."

EML Refurbishment Progress by George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular

via George Mattson:

"My EML refurbishment project is moving along slowly.

I now have all of the panel components and PC boards mounted. All panels are wired except for the right half of the middle.

I completed the sub structure and tacked the panels to it to give everybody a concept of the form factor.

I still have to make a base that will span an 88-key MIDI keyboard, add at top cap, make the cosmetic housing, install the two analog keyboards in a "drawer" configuration, install the power supplies then, go through and tweak everything in as well as build the inter-cabinet cables and I/O.

It's going to take a while :)"

June 3 - 29, 2011

Featuring performance version installation of the world's largest synthesizer, TONTO

and two-dimensional works by artists Bill Alpert, Bartus Bartolomes, Scott Alger, Astolfo Funes and Marjan Denkov.

New York, NY - Poet of Sound and Image KiNo will unleash a programme of sonic and visual ephemera in line with his psychedelic live musical performances for the month of June at the World Monuments Fund Gallery (15 East 27th Street.) The landscape will be punctuated by two-dimensional works from artists Bill Alpert, Bartus Bartolomes, Scott Alger, Astolfo Funes and Marjan Denkov.

KiNo uses images, sounds and words to comment on the fundamental aspects of human beings and their behavior. With unwavering intimations of conscience, his work strives to stimulate the emotional intelligence of his audience. During his 27 day residency, KiNo will present a universe of sound, film, and live installation.

"Sonic wizard" Jeff Blenkinsopp (Pink Floyd, Vangelis, The Secret Machines) invented an analogue processing device especially for KiNo known as the KiNo Live Rig. This one of a kind machine will join forces with the world's largest synthesizer, T.O.N.T.O. (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). Created by Malcolm Cecil (credited for electrifying Stevie Wonder), the performance version of TONTO will be installed at the gallery. For video footage of TONTO, click here. [embed below]

Nine special sets of KiNo's original music and sonic pieces will be performed throughout the month, combining the forces of the KiNo Live Rig and TONTO. A treasured special-guest lineup includes the following artists (for more information on them, click here):

Malcolm Cecil ("Godfather of electronic music")
Andy Rourke (The Smiths)
Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs)

VAX77 Host Control Demo [Polyphonic Aftertouch Keyboard Controller]

YouTube Uploaded by InfiniteResponse on May 20, 2011

I believe Infinite Response is the only current manufacturer of keyboards featuring polyphonic aftertouch. If anyone knows of others, feel free to comment. For those new to the term, polyphonic aftertouch allows you to apply aftertouch to only the note/s you are applying aftertouch to. On most synths if you apply aftertouch on only one note on the keyboard, all notes are affected. Many synths support poly aftertouch via MIDI. The Roland A90, Sequential Circuits Prophet T8, Yamaha CS80 and I believe Kurzweil's MIDIboard all supported poly aftertouch. Ensoniq obtained the rights to the most common form of poly aftertouch and as a result many of their synths including the SQ80 but not the ESQ1 featured it.

Beat707 Arduino Drum Sequencer Review by Altitude

http://www.beat707.com
"This project was brought to my attention a month ago and it immediately caught my eye as a perfect solution for a sequencer for my 9090 TR-909 clone.

Quick Run Down:
The Beat707 is a Arduino shield (meaning hardware front end) and software for an Arduino (Uno/2009/Mega) hardware platform. The Beat707 hardware can be purchased via their website assembled for $100 (An Arduino MIDI Groove Box Shield). Their website has a number of video demos that I recommend everyone check out. An arduino will run you $15-$65 depending on what you get and where you get it. I opted for an Uno for $30 but am upgrading to a Mega since the code limit for the 2009/Uno has pretty much been met. Anyone looking into getting one, I recommend a mega (Chinese clones are ~$40).

The hardware is simple to assemble, simply join the Arduino and the Beat707 (pins and headers) and upload the software. Arduino has its own software to upload the apps to the hardware and it is trivial to use (no programming knowledge required)

The Hardware:
The controls are straight forward. Sixteen step buttons, 4 navigation buttons, Stop/play/record/shift. Ports are midi in/out, Power, USB. It can be powered via USB and it also has a midi over USB function.

Here is mine. I opted for different style buttons from the kit to better suit my case. I also have two mods installed (more on that later)

The software:
The sequencer consists of 18 tracks: 14 drum instrument tracks, 2 monosynth tracks, and two accent tracks. Each drum voice can be set to a different midi channel and note. The names can easily be edited in the software so you don't have to have them named according the to GM names.

Editing the drum tracks is pretty much identical to the Tr-707. There is a A/B variation for each track giving a total of 32 steps (and it even goes beyond this, however I have not played around with that feature). The combination of the shift key gives access to editing and quick jump parameters (copy/paste/mute/solo etc). Pattern edit mode is your classic x0x style editing and there is also a realtime record where each of the 16 keys represents and instrument (again, like the 707)

The two synth tracks work considerably differently than the drum tracks and each note is entered per step and remains on until a note off event is programmed (to hold notes) or another note begins. There is also a slide function to slide between notes. What I really dig about the synth tracks is that with a keyboard attached, you can simply play in the notes from a keyboard. A clever scheme is used where a light note press (low velocity) is recorded as a rest and a hard press records that note. Both events advance the sequence to the next step. Quite fun to use.

Hacks and Mods:
The designer built in quite a bit of expandability so it is very easy to add features. Like I show above, I added an analog pot (which can be assigned to a number of parameters) and an encoder which allows for quick editing of parameters. There are also a number of switch inputs that can be used for a variety of things (footswitch start/stop). Trigger outputs are also built in to trigger non-midi external drum voices.

At this time, there is no case or faceplate for the Beat707 (coming soon afaik) so I designed my own enclosure based on an extruded Hammond box and a CNC made panel. I used lightpipes for the LEDs since they are mounted to the board and SMD parts."

Hollow Sun's Electrapiano

via Hollow Sun where you'll find sample and full details.

snip:
"The RMI Electrapiano from US manufacturer, Rocky Mount Instruments, was a popular electric piano/harpsichord in certain musical genres of the '70s.

To be accurate, the Electrapiano was actually an electronic piano - whereas other electric pianos at the time were electro-magnetic using tines hit by hammers that were amplified using pickups, the Electrapiano's sound was generated electronically.

It is thoroughly unrealistic and sounds very little like a real piano (or even an electric piano!) but it is a pleasant and distinctive sound nonetheless sounding somewhere between a harpsichord and a guitar... being charitable, let's just say that it has a piano or harpsichord 'quality'!...

FEATURES
* Authentic front panel; combine piano, harpsichord & lute
* 'Accenter' separately switchable
* 44kHz/24-bit samples for each note
* Presets plus user preset function
* Distortion, cab sim, chorus, phase shifter and echo multiFX
* Convolved reverb including springs, rooms, halls, etc.

Algebretti Spaghetti - Kawai K4r meets BCR2000

"One of the many pieces of junk rare vintage synths I sold in order to fund my Doepfer modular was the inimitable Kawai K4r. This is the rack mounted version of the K4 keyboard. The only differences being that the keyboard has built in effects while the rackmounted version swaps these for this 8 outs. While I never took advantage of this feature, as I've usually already got more synth outs than mixer channels, it is a nice little bonus for such a cheap module."

"This is an Original Tenori-On, with double-sided white LED screens and superior-quality magnesium alloy body construction. The newer version of the instrument is single-sided with orange LEDs and a plastic body...

About the Tenori-On

Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface.

The TENORI-ON 16 x 16 LED button matrix is simultaneously a performance input controller and display. By operating and interacting with the LED buttons and the light they produce you gain access to the TENORI-ON's numerous performance capabilities.

The TENORI-ON provides six different performance and sound/light modes for broad performance versatility, and these modes can be combined and used simultaneously for rich, complex musical expression.

Beat Thang Finally Arrives? At Best Buy?

Beat Thang from Rowdy BKE on Vimeo.

"LOS ANGELES, May 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "We wanted everyone to be able to produce music the same way we do," says Dallas Austin of the idea behind the Beat Thang. The Grammy-winning producer-songwriter-"keyboard fanatic" and owner of Atlanta-based Rowdy Electronics is introducing this groundbreaking mobile music-making machine through a joint venture with Nashville's BKE (Beat Kangz Electronics.) The Beat Thang will go on sale exclusively at Best Buy July 17, 2011 as a limited edition with a suggested retail price of $1,500.

Dallas Austin is the man behind multiplatinum hits by the likes of Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, TLC, Madonna, Pink and Gwen Stefani. At Austin's level, producing music the same way he does means access to a library of 3,000+ original sounds (live drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, strings, horns, Latin and African percussion); hundreds of beats, patterns and loops; 65 digital effects (EQ, compression, reverb, delay, filter, chopped, screwed, reverse record); sampling; waveform editing; and mixing and mastering functionality, among other marvels.

Fully portable but also able to integrate with a Mac or PC, the Thang has a 3.5-inch color video LCD screen. It offers endless customization possibilities, including the option to tailor your setting to wherever inspiration strikes – at home, in the club, on the corner, onstage, even in the studio. Its cutting-edge features can be enjoyed anywhere courtesy of a rechargeable battery and sturdy metal frame no heavier than a laptop.

"We're musicians and beat-makers and artists, so the development of the Beat Thang got an extra layer of creativity and love," says BKE President Aja Emmanuel, formerly a globe-trotting product specialist for Sam Ash Music and Samson Technologies and an independent hip-hop artist (perhaps best known for the 2002 album It's Time.)

Emmanuel and Austin are proud to note that the Beat Thang has already won high-profile fans like Jermaine Dupri, P. Diddy, will.i.am, Jim Jonsin and "American Idol" in-house mentor Jimmy Iovine, who went so far as to introduce the handy piece of hardware to "AI" audiences. Austin will go even farther when he takes the Beat Thang with him to space aboard Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in 2013.

Here on Earth, Austin is co-hosting pre-release parties with Best Buy in Nashville, Atlanta, New York and Miami to demonstrate the Beat Thang for industry VIP's. States Austin: "We'll be showing everyone how you can sing into it, play keyboards into it, put beats into it – anything," he says. "We'll also have a few for pre-order because once we hit the release date, it's anyone's guess how many will be available to the industry. We only produced 1,000 units and the buzz is running pretty hot."

Of course when Austin and Emmanuel started out in the music business, there was nothing like the Beat Thang. "It's like we made a list of everything we'd ever wanted as producers...and then went to work to put it all in one powerful machine that we could take with us whenever we wanted," states Emmanuel.

Notes Austin: "I remember being 11 or 12 and going to the music store every day to play the instruments. I couldn't afford any of them. And now Aja and I are going worldwide with the music machine of the future!"

Yamaha CS01II plays BIG MUFF by Depeche Mode

YouTube Uploaded by peahix on May 19, 2011

"Download this track at: http://snd.sc/iyLd2s

The Yamaha CS01II is the first real synthesizer I ever owned. I got it when I was about 14 years old, back in 1985 or so. I noticed that I could get reasonable approximations of most of the sounds from Depeche Mode's "Speak & Spell" album with it, but at the time I didn't have the means to make decent multi-track cover versions, even after I got a 4-track.

Recently I was studying the Depeche Mode 5.1 surround mixes, and realized that I could clearly hear all the distinct parts of alot of the songs, so I decided to throw together some renditions using just my trusty old Yamaha CS01II as the sole sound source (including the drums), just to see how close I could get to the originals using very limited means.

The actual musical arrangement is about 100% accurate. The sounds themselves are of course only approximations, and most of them don't have the same level of timbral detail as the ARP originals. I sequenced the whole thing in Cubase via a Kenton Pro Solo going into the custom CV/Gate inputs on my CS01II, recording each monophonic line in one at a time. Cubase provided the reverb and EQ, otherwise it's all CS01II. I've deliberately been quite pure about this process- other than the reverb/delay/EQ, there's no manipulation of the sounds going on here. This is, for me, mostly a technical exercise, so it wouldn't make much sense to process the sounds very much, as that would only take it further away from the native sound of the CS01II.

I don't really consider these to be "covers" as such- if I were covering these tunes, I'd do something creative with them as opposed to just mimicing them as closely as possible. I don't have any desire to "cover" these songs in that sense. At any rate, this project has been a good exercise in close listening and mixing for me, so I see that as the main reward for my efforts."
