Sequentix Cirklon + Sonic|Core XITE-1 - MIDI test1

YouTube Uploaded by neutron7 on Jun 27, 2011

"Completely DSP non analog abomination!

A single pattern on Sequentix Cirklon running only Sonic|Core XITE-1 DSP synthesizers, (synthesized)drums and effects through 1 MIDI cable.

No DAW was running, it was recorded direct to disc with VDAT, then substituted directly to the video track (and some video effects added for fun).

I did not do any mixing, just turned tracks on and off on the Cirklon, and a little tweaking of filter and note lengths data on the three-0-three track.

Most of the synths were in monophonic mode, the total DSP usage on the XITE-1 was about 40%

This was a test to see how good the MIDI timing would be from Cirklon to XITE-1. it is great! many of the problems with Scope and MIDI, using DAW+OS+MIDI driver+motherboard do not manifest at all. and it sounds VERY tight.

The Orbitone three -o- three was notorious for stuck notes. I never got one in 2 days, with major messing about with its data while running, even with 3 tracks playing a single instance at the same time(which used to almost guarantee a stuck note), or sometimes leaving it running to do chores or whatnot."

Oddball Alesis Display Module 6 Ch Audio Switcher?

via this auction
Anyone familiar with this one?
"This auction is for an oddball Alesis project that was probably for a NAMM show or maybe some other demo environment. It would be great for a store or other place where you need to switch between up to 6 audio inputs for comparison.

It appears to be a 6 input stereo audio switcher. Please note that the description comes from my inspection of the board and does not imply that I really know what this is or where it came from! ;-)

The unit has what appears to be 6 stereo inputs on 1/4" TRS jacks and 1 stereo output on a L/R pair of 1/4" jacks. There are actually places on the board for two more stereo audio inputs, but I imagine you'd have to hack the firmware to make it work. There are also two headphone outputs with volume control. Most of the audio path is TL084 with a couple of NE5532's thrown in for good measure. The switching is done with relays. I can hear them switching, but have not actually hooked up any audio level signals to the unit. The unit has a 2 line by 16 character back-lit LCD display (with contrast pot) that shows the current selection. Selection is made via a pair of up/down switches.
Finally, the auction includes a 9v AC adapter typical of Alesis products (of that time). The display cycles the following 6 items:

- Alesis QS7
- Alesis QSR
- Alesis DM5
- Alesis NanoSynth
- Alesis NanoPiano
- Alesis NanoBass

But of course you can plug anything in you want.

The unit does not have a case, but I will pack it well so that it survives shipping. The board uses an 8031 CPU like in the HR-16 and MMT8 families and it has an external EPROM. This would allow you to hack the unit quite easily if you are experienced in writing code or reverse engineering. The unit would be great fun for a hacker or ex-Alesis employee."

Acidlab Bassline TB-303 Synthesiser Sequencer

via this auction

"very cool and very nasty little acid box, the highly regarded TB-303 style Acidlab Bassline in rare blue... One of the best of the recent crop of TB-303 emulators, this is a genuine analogue synth nearly electronically identical to the 303. Sequencer is different but also can act as an interface between midi and Sync gear (808, etc).

It also has MIDI and can even control your other CV / Gate synths, so you can effectively use it as a MIDI synced analogue sequencer for older synths that don't have MIDI.

These are no longer made! Much cheaper than a genuine TB-303 and professionally made in Germany."

Collin's Lab: Switches

YouTube Uploaded by makemagazine on Jun 27, 2011

"Easily overlooked, but elemental to electronics hardware, the manually operated switch is the simplest of electromechanical devices -- and likely the most familiar. While the most basic switch is ... well, quite basic -- there's a crazy-huge variety of switch types & sizes available to the electronics maker nowadays. Those new to the soldering & schematics scene will surely benefit from an introduction to some of the terms and formats relevant to various switch species."

1921 > 1989

YouTube Uploaded by ExMachinaPub on Jun 26, 2011

"This is the second of two collaborations between Michael Scroggins and Barry Schrader in the late 1980s. For more information, and an explanation of the title, go to barryschrader.com ➔ video"

via Barry Schrader:
"This was a relatively early computer video work, the second of two that Michael Scroggins and I collaborated on in the late 1980s.

The music was done with a Yamaha TX816.

1921 > 1989 Notes

In beginning my first work in 3-D computer video, I found that the basic spatial parameters of the computer were described by the Cartesian coordinates of X, Y, & Z (width, height, and depth). The symmetry of this lattice structure reminded me of the right angle orientation of Neoplasticism, especially the three dimensional constructions of Theo van Doesburg. The correspondence between the spatial model of the computer and the elegant simplicity of the reductivist formal devices of De Stijl suggested an interesting discipline for my first experiments with computer animation.

In researching the theories of De Stijl in order that I might be true to their ideal, I discovered that in the search for universal and immutable principles of art, Van Doesburg's thinking was in constant revolution, and that each edition of the journal De Stijl brought forth new definitions. In 1926, Van Doesburg found it necessary to supersede Neoplasticism with Elementarism declaring:

"As a result of a new orientation relative to the earlier attempts at renewal in life and art (including Futurism, Cubism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Neoplasticism, etc.), Elementarism has assimilated all truly modern elements (often ignored through one-sidedness).

"Elementarism is to be regarded, therefore, as the synthesis of the new plastic consciousness of the age. The "isms" of the last decades have mostly perished, either because of their one-sided, dogmatic limitations, or because of compromise or chauvinistic tendencies. They no longer have any force or value for renewal."

As a result of a new orientation relative to the earlier attempts at renewal in life and art (including Futurism, Cubism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Neoplasticism, etc.), Elementarism has assimilated all truly modern elements (often ignored through one-sidedness).

In order to work within the limits of De Stijl, it became useful to fix a particular date as a reference, and so the piece became 1921 > 1989.

Michael Scroggins

__________________

When Michael Scoggins first came to me with quite detailed plans for his computer video work 1921 > 1989, I was struck by the overriding importance of structure in the piece. While it was obviously in three large sections, the intricacies of the details of each section were such that they not only displayed specific characteristics which gave each sections its unique character, they also seemed to exhibit in visual terms the musical qualities of exposition, development, and expanded recapitulation, something akin to the classical sonata form. In addition, the precision of the timing of the movements called for composing a score that would catch the specific “hits” of the action. At the same time, I realized that constantly “stinging” the images would quickly grow tedious; some sort of deflection from the obviously expected was occasionally necessary in this regard. Finally I saw that the limitations of images and colors, which were explored in great detail of variation, demanded a similar approach in the musical materials.

I decided to employ these observations in composing the music, and also to take the attitude of scoring to a preexistent choreography. I saw 1921 > 1989 as a dance, not of human dancers, but of plastic geometric entities, constantly reorganizing themselves in different ways. The music, then, was arrived at by considering the score as if I were composing music to a dance already created. The resulting work reflects these attitudes, moving from accompaniment to counterpoint and back again to a more synchronous style of scoring, thus reflecting the overall structure and plasticity of the piece and creating a unified whole.

Alesis iO Dock Requires Separate Adapter for iPad 2?

via Ryan:
"I've pre-ordered the Alesis Studio Dock for my ipad 2, so it's encouraging to see some retailers now shipping. One is Sweetwater.

Now, alarming to me, is the 1st review at that retail site from someone who claims to have received one of these already...and finds it is not compatible with ipad 2 out of the box:

'The box is huge, and the dock is well packed. Includes power supply, a really skimpy manual...basically a quickstart guide that briefly explains the buttons, knobs, ins and outs, and so on, the I/O dock itself, and sadly enough, for you iPad 2 owners, a slip of paper telling you how to contact Alesis to order an adapter. Luckily for me, I have the iPad 1!'

WTF. Nowhere on the Alesis site does it say there is an adaptor required...or even available!

Consider my pre-order cancelled until I know more about this adaptor and its availability."

Quick note: remember to support the shops that support this site. See the DEALERS section on the right. Sweetwater gets a free ride on this one.

Per Linné UC-1 SEQUENCER for SEQUENTIAL PRO-ONE

via this auction

"Recording in real-time as well as in step mode. 1760 memory locations can be allocated to 10 (non-volatile) individual sequences, 10 transpose sequences and 10 individual sequence chains. Depending on use, 586 to 880 notes can be stored in memory. Transpose- and chaining functions make it possible to compose complete songs of at least 20 minutes long.

BRAND NEW KIT! - No longer available anywhere else. Latest version Rev.3 board and operating system 2.0 Approved and recommended by Sequential Circuits.

The sequencer records Autoglide in single-step as well in real-time mode. Includes a high-resolution clock, freeing the Pro-One's LFO for modulation purposes, but when preferred, it is still possible to use the LFO for clocking.

All sequencing data can be stored and retrieved on tape or any other audio recording system. A 4-character alphanumeric display provides status feedback, including clock frequency, save/load information, etc.

All of the Pro-One's original functions remain. The new sequencer can still be triggered step-by-step with an external clock or audio signal. Two jacks sockets are added for high resolution clock in/out, enabling synchronization of the UC-1 to a drum machine or another UC-1/Pro-One.

The UC-1 provides sync-to-tape facility for multi track recording. Other equipment without tape sync can simultaneously be slaved to the Pro-One.

Through the Pro-One's CV and Trigger outputs it is also possible to use the sequencer for the control of other synthesizers with CV and Trigger in.

Because the kit was manufactured more than 25 years ago, the memory backup battery has already been replaced for you with a fresh one.

This kit comes with clear step-by-step instructions. However, unless you have some experience with projects like this, it is recommended to have it done by a qualified technician."

FL STUDIO MOBILE FAQ

What about Android OS? It's on the roadmap, stop nagging! We have a development team working on a low-latency Android audio-engine and there are many screen resolutions and device specifications to consider, it's not as simple as you may think :)

Does this mean FL Studio on Mac OSX soon? FL Studio Mobile is not a port of the Windows version of FL Studio. It is the product of a completely separate development team, and code, so FL Studio Mobile, while compatible with FL Studio has no impact on FL Studio development and vice versa.

Can I load my own samples? Not in version 1.0. We plan to enable user uploads in a future update.

Can I use VSTs? No, iOS does not support VSTs and frankly the devices it runs on don't have the CPU power to perform the synthesis you are used to on a desktop. FL Studio Mobile uses high quality sample based instruments made from Image-Line plugins and sample packs."
