"Circuit bent toy. Makes some mean noises.... :) Video includes some pics and video of the 'bending' as well as the playing. Sound has a little delay effect added otherwise it's one take and just the toy. I love the bassy synth sound near the end."

Rockit 8 Bit Synth Kit on Kickstarter

This one in via Joel. DIY synth on Kickstarter. For those not familiar with Kickstarter, it's a site where you can put a project up for people to support by pledging different amounts of money. Typically different pledges get different returns, for example in this case $20 gets you a shirt, $25 gets you a barebones kit, $125 gets you a complete kit, and $200 get you a fully functional synth. I added a Kickstarter label to the site where you can find additional projects. I also created a Rockit label for this project. The following is the description from Kickstarter for the synth archives here on MATRIXSYNTH:

"Hello Kickstarter! Thanks for checking out my project and helping to turn my blood, sweat and tears into a real product.

My goal in designing the Rockit 8 Bit Synth is to make an inexpensive open-source synth kit. For musicians, Rockit will be a source of gnarly full-blown synth sounds and, for hackers and electronics enthusiasts, Rockit will be an engaging electronics project and a platform for synth exploration. I'm near the end and I'm glad to report that Rockit rocks on both counts. The synth makes deep fat bass, chip noise leads, sci-fi robot weirdness and eveything in between. The hardware is well-documented and the code is written in easy to follow C with ample comments, so the average electronics geek will find a project with enough depth to keep them busy for a good while. If you'd like to read about the design process and the design in depth, visit hackmeopen.com.

Specs:

Fully Open Source Hardware and Well-Commented C Software Design

Digital Analog Hybrid Circuitry

2 Digital Oscillators with 16 waveshapes, updateable to more

2 Low Frequency Modulation Oscillators with 10 destinations

Innovative Digitally-Controlled Analog Filter with Low-Pass, Band-Pass, and High-Pass with Envelope Control and External Audio Input

Analog Voltage-Controlled Amplifier with Envelope Control

Drone/Loop Mode for Playing by Itself

19 Knobs to Twiddle and 8 Switches

Full MIDI Input and Output

Sound Patch Save and Recall

What's in the Kit

The Rockit kit Includes the circuit board and all the electronic components necessary to build the synth, along with a wall wart power supply. The kit does require soldering, but I'm also making it available in fully built form, for the moment by yours truly. Neither form presently comes with a case.

What's the money for?

The money I'm raising is to purchase parts for the first run and to provide the fuel to keep it going. If all this works out, the synth will eventually be available in kit and finished form on my website, hackmeopen.com. I'm planning on making derivatives and expansions of this design. In the end, I'd love to free myself from the chains of corporate engineer bondage to pursue creating open source hardware audio electronics."

intellijel Corgasmatron dual VCF + XFader

via intellijel
(also works as a dual sine vco)
"I am pleased to finally present the Corgasmatron! A dual VCF + Xfader module in 16hp. This was modelled after the Korg MS-20 but it is a completely new circuit design.

The original circuit was designed by analog guru David G. Dixon after carefully studying and analyzing the classic Korg MS-20 filter. His work resulted in a completely original circuit based around SSM2164 VCA chips. His design was capable of almost identical results but was far more versatile. This is not a part for part clone, it is an entirely new and modern circuit with many enhancements.

Key features:
-16HP and shallow (two pcbs in parallel so it is skiff friendly)
-two independent filters, each with LP, HP and Notch modes.
-Unique resonant (Q) drive control
-A Switch links the two filters allowing both parallel and serial routing via normals to input B (which can be broken by inserting a cable at input B).
-Oscillates very easily and can be used as a dual sine VCO. Using the resonant controls this Sine shape can be colored.
-1V/Oct inputs
-Built in full featured cross fader allows voltage controlled xfading between the two filters. The Xfade has a switch to select either unipolar (e.g. envelopes) or bipolar (e.g. lfo) control of the xfade position. There is also a switch to select direction. With nothing plugged into the Xfade jack the xfade knob controls the fade position. When an external CV is patched in the same knob acts as an attenuator for the control signal.
-Jumpers on the back to select "modern" or "vintage" resonant modes (two different feedback paths for the resonance that use different diodes)
-expansion jacks for adding additional filter inputs and VC control of resonance

The Corgasmatron's sound can range from ultra clean and precise, to extremely ballsy and dirty. The resonance is incredibly musical and interesting and is prime for all sorts of experimenting and sound design. The normalling, routing and cv options have been carefully selected to allow for a lot of control over the modules functionality and capabilities.

MSRP is $340.00"
