RMI Harmonic Synthesizer and Keyboard Computer demonstration record, part 2

Uploaded by baward on Jul 24, 2011

"RMI has just released TWO GREAT CONCEPTS on the musical public -- HARMONIC SYNTHESIZER and KEYBOARD COMPUTER. You will soon be hearing our sounds from other sources, since recording studios and touring groups are starting to use the new instruments. It appears we have hit on something -- see what you think.

Everything you hear on this record was recorded LIVE in REAL TIME by ONE PERSON. Any cross--fading or instruments appearing in contrast between the left and right channels was accomplished by the performer's use of the pedal -- not the recording engineer. RMI's concept allows the single performer to create five Independent channels of audio, bringing studio effects to the concert stage. Live concert ensemble will be improved while studio recording time will be greatly reduced.

Mike Mandel, keyboard wizard, was the first "outsider" to try our new instruments. Mike took to them like a fish to water. Cut one on side two is a section of an improvisation that began after only two hours. Although a tape was made at the time, there had been no plans for a record. Mike's inspiration from this first meeting convinced us that this cut was a must.

Clark Ferguson, marketing director at RMI, has composed music to illustrate the potentials of the new instruments in dealership concerts and demonstrations throughout the country.

Carlo Curley, a young and exciting concert organist, feels with the advent of the RMl Harmonlc Synthesizer and Keyboard Computer, a new era of expression has arrived. During the recording of the Daquin "Noel," Curley was inspired to improvise on the theme using the Keyboard Computer strings.

[RECORD SIDE TWO]

MANDEL DOES IT -- Full use is made of Channel Three and the Pitch Bender. A rapid percussive arpeggio is programmed on the sequencer as a background. Filter "sweeps" are used as accents.

NON-PIPE ORGAN -- You know what we mean. Characteristic keying noise and percussion are created by card #F3186. #1184 produces a typical setting. Rotating speaker effects are created by Chorus and the Vibrato Touch Bar.

JAZZ FLUTE -- Card used - Jazz Flute #F2335. Twelfth harmonic is percussed rapidly to create "over--blowing" transients. Fundamental and other harmonics on card #F2335 are delayed by Slow Attack mode.

RECORDER AND HARPSICHORD -- Alto Recorder #F2065 is heard with slight vibrato on channel one. Pulse cards #SPG1001 and #SPG2002 are percussed through channel two (no vibrato). Quick changes are made with the pedals.

MOMENT MUSICALE (Schubert) -- Percusslve accompaniment on Computer. Solo line is played alternately on the Synthesizer Left and Right Voices.

NOEL (Daquin) -- Flutes and harpsichord are the main instruments. Light bells are "sequenced" at random on the Synthesizer.

Produced by Clark Ferguson & Steve Roth, A.O.C.
Recorded at: Helffrich Recording Lab, Allentown, Pennsylvania
Front cover: Sam Smith, Allentown, Pennsylvania
Back cover: Tom Zwicki, A.O.C.

84 Minimum Viable Modcan

YouTube Uploaded by 7thDanSound on Jul 23, 2011

"A guy suggested one could have quite fun with just three modules of Modcan, the 3VCO, the Dual Multimode Filter and the Quad Envelope. This thanks to the amplitude input on the 3VCO which in fact works like a VCA for that module. Works like a charm and packs quite some punch into very little panel space! In fact, if you go for a rack space system, you can fit two more modules into one row. This will definitely get you started though!

MONOTRIBE! CV Sync w Bliptronic 5K - Part A - The LA CarMageddon Blues

YouTube Uploaded by VJFranzK on Jul 23, 2011

"DIY - Clever Prevails Again! I connected the sync out of the MonoTribe to the Bliptronic 5K, and then the headphone output of the BT5K back to the audio in of the MT, allowing the analog resonant filter of the MT to round out the "digital toy" sounds of the BT5K into an interesting timbre that at times resembles car horns honking the blues. ( Major contruction projects in LA caused a traffic jam dubbed "CarMageddon" recently, so it seems a perfect name. )"

Heavily Modified Roland MC-202

via this auction
Tons of pics at the auction.

"This particular MC-202 has been modified with the same features as detailed here (with the exception of MIDI input): http://www.subatomicglue.com/202l0g/

The extra features are: CV/GATE/CUTOFF/PULSEWIDTH/PORTA/VOL/ACCENT/MOD/VCFINSERT/VCAINSERT.
The SPDT (on-on) toggles control PW (CV/INT), CUT (CV/INT), VCFMOD (CV/INT), ACC (VCA+F/VCA)

Having a proper CV input allows external control without stepping and lagging, which was problem with the factory CV input that runs through the MC-202 CPU."

“The Masterpiece” Vintage Rhodes Chroma

via this auction

SN 21030828

"This beloved, historically significant keyboard has been carefully upgraded in 1986 at the CBS Fender Rhodes factory where they replaced the power supply and new eproms, and again in 2009 by Steve "Doc" Hickerson, a factory authorized Chroma technician who put in a brand new, completely redesigned power supply and brought the keyboard to like new spec. Doc has worked on Chroma's since they were introduced. He has a reputation for experienced, knowledgable, excellent work and has been trusted by a list of famous performers, to include Eric Clapton.

This is my 2nd Chroma. I purchased the first in June of 1983 at Music Sound World in Tulsa, Oklahoma where I was writing music for the soundtrack of “The Masterpiece” (Called Toymaker’s Dream back then).

In 1984 CBS/Fender sent me a brand new (improved edition) Chroma, with the latest version of their upgrades and fixes. This is the one is the one being sold here.

Back then, the Rhodes Chroma was a REVELATION! It put million dollar sound technology at the touch of our fingers for a mere $5600. Amazing.

By today's standards it's still well specified. It was the only open architecture, multi-voiced, portable synth commercially available with a weighted keyboard and a programmable Expander (not included) that allowed for layering performances and sequencing those performances on a computer (before MIDI). I ran this one on an Apple IIE for awhile with MasterTracks 8 channel software and it performed perfectly.

We finished the soundtrack for “The Masterpiece” and I recorded a solo album with it 1985.

The rapid fire changes in keyboards caused by the introduction of MIDI made the Chroma an instrument better left to my home studio. That’s exactly where it has remained operating as the master keyboard in my suite through a Chromaface MIDI interface, for years (also being sold on eBay). The sheer weight of the Chroma (142 lbs. in the anvil flight case) made it impractical for the road. When it wasn't in use it was cased and carefully taken care of."

Resonator Neuronium 1 - Summing Node from Katavist on Vimeo.

"This is the first in a series of Resonator Neuronium-demos attempting to debunk some erroneous assumptions about this machine, such as the one that it only spits out uncontrollable noise and can't be used/played as an instrument. Admittedly there's always some trial and error involved, and the machine definitely has its own will - but isn't that charming?

The only sound source in these videos is the Resonator Neuronium (with additional external effects).

Zvex Instant Lo-Fi Junky pedal processing analog synthesizer

"Here is the super cool Zvex Instant Lo-Fi Junky pedal. Yes, this one's a prototype.

We are using the Zvex pedal to process a Moog Slim Phatty analog synth. The arpeggiation comes from the Dave Smith Instruments keyboard that we are playing.

The Instant Lo-Fi Junky pedal was designed with guitarists in mind, and it kills on guitar! But, as you can hear, it sounds great on synths too!

Thanks to Josh Flynn for shooting the video."
