Undead Instruments - timeFrog II - Inertial Sensor Gestures

Undead Instruments - timeFrog II - Inertial Sensor Gestures from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"The timeFrog II is a powerful and flexible MIDI device dedicated to music computer and MIDI applications.

The spin/inertial sensor provides a totally new kind of control surface, which opens new way for playing with parameters.

The 8 endless encoders, 4 potentiometers and 6 buttons form a functional and compact.

There is also a embedded 4 steps sequencer: 4x4 steps x 6 voices

This patch was setup in Ableton Max For Live using only two instances of SonicCharge's Synplant software synthesizer. These two patches where customized and
designed to work with the timeFrogII. Creating for some very unique musical gestures. All sequencing and note generation is from the timeFrog controller.

Early Moog Modular

via Marc Doty's Photos.

If you remember from this post and this earlier post, Marc is spending the Summer with The Bog Moog Foundation.

If you look at the large panel towards the left you'll see what looks like a filter bank. I was curious if this was one of the five only in existence, mentioned at 6:47 in the video below, by the late David Hillel Wilson, former curator of The New England Synthesizer Museum. If you look at the video you will see that it is not the same. It is also not the same as the 914 Filter Bank pictured here, or the 907A here. It looks closest to the 914. [Update 1/6/12 via Brian Kehew: "The old filter module is an original 907 Fixed Filter bank (the 907a is the same thing, but turned vertically; I assume to save panel space. The 914 is 'Extended' meaning more bands and options"]

Update: some additional info from Michelle Moog-Koussa: "Hi All, this modular was the demo unit at R.A. Moog, Co. I believe the modules are dated 1967, but I'll have to double check. In 1970, when Bill Weytana took over the company, Bob sold this synth to David Borden, a good friend and a founding member of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece. David used the synth for years until sometime about 10 or 15 years ago, Bob called him and asked if he could have it back, at which point David sent it without hesitation. It's the only modular we have in the archives and we're very grateful to have it. The synth still bears the Mother Mallard plaque on the left side. Here's a photo of it, taken at our Pushing the Envelope Exhibit: http://www.facebook.com/l/EAQCbjJb1/on.fb.me/o17LeM. @Matrix, I don't think this is a special filter bank like David was talking about, although it would be amazing to have one of those in the archives. It looks like this system most closely resembles a "Synthesizer Ic' from the 1967 catalog. @Custom synth, it's not used.......yet. When we have the resources to restore it and share it, we will certainly use it!"

TouchOSC FS1R Editor - First Screenshot

Something I'm working on for the Yamaha FS1R and TouchOSC with The Missing Link. This is the Operator parameters page. There are 8 Voiced and 8 Unvoiced operators in the FS1R. Multiply that by four parts and you are looking at 64 pages. Unfortunately TouchOSC does not appear to support a method I can use to select Operator and Part, so I'm looking at manually mapping every single control you see here times 64. It's probably going to take a while, but it is coming. I might make the editor available once Part 1 is complete. If anyone is interested, let me know. The one plus with TouchOSC is I can edit this on my Mac vs. directly on the iPad, which for a template this size makes the difference between being committed and simply giving up. I should say these pages are the last ones I need to complete before the editor will be complete. I have finally cracked the FS1R open. BTW, this editor will require The Missing Link as TouchOSC does not currently support sysex directly and the FS1R requires sysex for advanced editing. BTW, if your wondering what's up with the color scheme of my editor, it matches the FS1R.

Eight Step Synthesizer

YouTube Uploaded by mike19822058 on Jul 25, 2011

"Housed in a reused slide case is eight individual square-wave oscillators triggered by a built-in eight-step sequencer, as well as a stepped-tone generator that can drone or flash in sync. A sweepable low-pass filter allows the high-end to be rolled off. Individual volume controls for the eight oscillators and the stepped-tone generator let you blend the sound of each.

This does not play traditional notes. The pitch controls sweep through a range of frequencies. This device has some very subtle yet enjoyable crosstalk.

This will run off either an included 9volt battery or an also included wall adapter.

Fairlight CMI Legacy XXL Details

video posted here

Some additional info via Bitley

"So what is the Fairlight XXL? It is a refill for Reason 5 or Reason 5 & Record 1.5 and upwards. It contains the entire Fairlight CMI library, used with kind permission from Fairlight Instruments in Australia. Being the 8th major release of the Fairlight refills since April 2010 when the first version came, it now contains 3 Gb of data (this is compressed when packing the refill; the refill itself is close to 2 Gb’s), over 13,000 individual files in all; more instruments has been added all the time.

Instruments:

CMI IIx, D-50, JX8P, JX10, Prophet 5 Rev 2, Jupiter 4, Moog Minimoog, Moog Prodigy, SH101, MS20, EII, EIII, Prophet VS, DX7, TX81Z, TX816, 01/W FD, Juno 106, PPG Wave 2.2, Matrix 12, SQ80, VZ-1, V-Synth, S-750, EMT-1, MU-80, Subtractor (!), SX-250, Sequential 440 and more.

Drums & loops:

Although this isn’t really a “loop” library as such, some interesting rex files are actually included, such as some ‘vibes’ from a heavily modified TR-606. You will also find individual drum ‘hits’ from CMI IIx, TR-505, 606, 626, 707, 808, 909, Sequential 440, EIII, LinnDrum, Sequential Tom, DMX, DR-220E, CR-68, CR-78, RX5, MRS-8, DDD 1 E-drums, M1, SX-250, RZ1, CZ230S and more.

What happens with the Fairlight CMI II+ ReFill?

If you have it, you can upgrade to XXL for a small fee; or keep using it until you feel curious about more sounds. The major difference between the refills is that II+ is compatible with Reason 4 as well; XXL is made with and for Reason 5 and upwards. While II+ also works in Reason 5, this new version is fatter, even more seriously organized and in a word, better.

Fairlight CMI II+ is still availble on the site if you want a cheaper refill that still knocks the socks of just about any other refill in the entire world."

Monotribe Talking

Uploaded by poolpartyfy on Jul 14, 2011

"While playing around with my newly baught Monotribe, i found out how to produce vowels.

The setting is:
- LFO: fast
- LFO-Rate at 2:30
- LFO-Int at 1:00
- filter peak somewhere between 12:00 and 1:00

By playing with the filter cutoff you can produce vowels. Escpecially the filter peak will affect the vowels, and its a little tricky to find the exact position where good vowels can be produced."

Malekko Wiard Borg 2 Filter (black)

via this auction

"The Borg Filter – A hybrid of Buchlas Lowpass Gate 292 und and the high-/lowpass filter of the Korg MS 20 (but without individual controls for resonance and cutoff) is a very interesting and aggressive filter which can be used as a VCA as well.
Did we already mention the Borg 2 is a true sub-bass monster and you can generate huge bassdrums with it?

Differences between Borg1 and Borg2:
The Borg 2 has black knobs.
It is the same as the original Wiard 1200 series FracRak module. It´s very aggressive, has a shorter decay time and sounds more brilliant.

Technical details:
The peaking control determines the resonance but also acts as a switch between filter or VCA. The resonance is strong and the filter self-oscillates very fast. A further control blends from low- over band- to highpass mode.
Because of the slow and inert Vacrols used in the circuit it is quite impossible to modulate the cutoff frequency with fast CV signals.

Inputs and outputs:
2x Audio IN
2x Audio OUT
2x CV IN (key in = 1V/oct)
1x CV OUT

Measures and weight:
3U Eurorack module, module width 12HP"

Triadex Muse - 1972 Vintage Digital Music Sequencer

via this auction

"History
The Triadex Muse is the first digital musical composition instrument. It is a sequencer based tone synthesizer and it was first produced in 1972. Essentially, the Muse is a deterministic algorithmic event generator that uses early digital integrated logic circuits to generate an audio output that produces a sequence of notes based on the settings of various parameters. In the 1970's when most synthesized music makers were huge and cost thousands, the Triadex Muse was a reasonably sized tabletop model and cost $300. Only a few hundred (we think around 300) were produced and they were never made available in stores. The Muse was designed by two famed MIT professors, Marvin Minsky and Edward Fredkin. At the time, Minsky was moonlighting on the movie set of '2001 A Space Odyssey', teaching Stanley Kubrick about Artificial Intelligence as he created Hal. Isaac Asimov described Minsky as one of only two people he would admit were more intelligent than he was, the other being Carl Sagan. Ed Fredkin was an early pioneer of digital physics. In 1980, Carnegie Mellon U. created the Fredkin Prize, to be awarded to the creators of the first computer to win the World Chess Championship. The Muse was designed to replace a radio - why listen to old music when this neat-o box can make new music?

How it Works
The front panel sliders, which control the melodies that are generated, allow for the possibility of 14 trillion musical note combinations. The four small sliders in the lower-left control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. The switches to either side of the sliders are used to start and stop the sequence, or to step through it note-by-note. Of the eight larger sliders on the right, four control the musical intervals used (labeled A, B, C, and D), and four control the theme (labeled W, X, Y, and Z). There is also a "Rest" toggle switch at the lower right which acts as a "lowest note".

Details
The musical computer is housed in a sleek mid-century modern wedge shaped finished wood and brushed aluminum case. Located at the upper left of the unit panel is the internal speaker.
It measures 10 inches high x 11 inches deep x 13-1/2 inches wide.
The cosmetic condition of this Muse is good, but it has seen some use and it is almost 40 years old. It is missing the on/off switch, however the switch is in the ON position, so when you plug it in, it works. There is a scratch in the brushed aluminum above the tempo slider, and the wood has warped a little bit and has some surface scratching here and there around the case. The electrical cord has also been cut at some point, not all the way through but enough to expose the copper inside. It has been repaired with some electrical tape and hasn't had any issues since.
