Buchla Multitrack

YouTube Uploaded by 7thDanSound on Aug 15, 2011

"Testing multitracking of the Buchla for the first time. A lot of fun but maybe a little rough around the edges, some harsh sounds here and there. But boy does the layering add to the depth of this thing!

very quick tour

YouTube Uploaded by textualmusic on Aug 15, 2011

"a quick tour of my modular Lunetta-ish / logic-esque synthesizer...
I have been into electronic music for about 15 years, and only really been making it for about 10, I haven't been this passionate about an 'instrument' the learning or making thereof in this case.. since I learned to play the drums.. been doing that for about 21 years... synthesizers are my new drumset. I like the idea of a piece of music being made with very simple sounds being layered upon each other, all their own still as little cells of sound.

nerds:
these circuits are simple mostly CMOS logic chips, some op-amps, and many vactrols or LED/LDR combos.. basic oscillators, filters, sequencing elements, envelope generators.. soon to be drum sounds too..

I just finished a 12 input mixer (bottom row far right) so i can get my polyphony on, as you can hear from this patch . Working on a very simple implement of the logic section of the CGS master divider as well as 4 DS8 drum voices.."

A trial run of an embedded filter using the units own power supply while maintaining a clean signal path throught the filter. A total success and a quality sound.

This is how these keyboards were meant to be!

Concentrating here on the filter, with the delay adding ambience. Overloading the filter at about 4.15 for a nice bassline distortion and cutoff modulation..."

It's been upgraded since part one with some processor glitching and a drone switch.

Not quite a s pleasant to listen to as i just wanted to mess with the lfo and delay in the harsher side of what it can do.

I guess you'll either understand or you won't ;)"

Reaktor - Xylo

YouTube Uploaded by rubymatt on Aug 15, 2011

"Quick demo of "Xylo" which is a sampler instrument I've built in Reaktor over the last two evenings. It was inspired by watching a video by Clark Nova (http://vimeo.com/3059674) and the bug in Kontakt that meant I couldn't reproduce it.

Xylo has 8 voices where each voice plays a loop, back and forth, across a shared sample. Each loop starts at the same point but has a different length, playback speed, and granular settings.

It's designed to have a very long release time so that the loops carry on playing and bouncing off each other in a (hopefully) satisfying way."

Circuitbenders TR505 Pitch Mod

via Circuitbenders

"This mod adds a pitch knob that controls the sample playback speed, and therefore the pitch of every drum sound simultaneously. It can sweep from punchy clicks and blips at the top, to horribly granular crunchy noise at the bottom as the sounds disappear under a wall of aliasing noise. The pitch knob can be used alongside the patchbay effects for some seriously messed up percussion sounds."

Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter with MPG-80 Programmer

via this auction

"This unit has the Version 4.0 software, and the serial number is higher than 511799, therefore it is the later version with Roland VCO chips, not CEM (they all have Roland Filter chips). Debate rages as to which sound better - I can't comment as I haven't A/B'd two units, but I do know that the later version corrects distortion that could occur at higher resonance settings in Unison mode, and at high Crossmod settings.

Comes with DIN cable to join the 2 units. Note that the MPG-80 does not have rack mount ears."

Roland Jupiter 6 With Europa upgrade

via this auction

"This also comes with the Europa midi upgrade from synthcom. this was professionally installed by Steve Jones in Sydney.

The Jupiter 6 was Roland's first synth to don the then brand new MIDI protocol, and because of this the implementation was very crude and pretty much useless. a few years ago a company in the US went about rewriting the OP code for this particular instrument and produced an upgrade in the form of a new processor that basically completed what Roland started. With this upgrade installed, you get all the sounds, functionality and coolness of a 1980's analogue synth, but with all the convenience and compatibility of a modern synth."

Yamaha EZ-EG MIDI Guitar Keytar Ztar

via this auction

"Marketed as "Learning Guitars", the Yamaha EZ-EG and EZ-AG are secretly a powerful instrument for controlling softsynths!
Besides their normal MIDI messages, these guitars also send out SysEx for each fret pressed and released. This allows us to create our own performance modes not originally found in the EZ-EG instruments. For those of you interested in pursuing alternate midi controllers...

Last year Yamaha released their "EZ" series of "learning guitars" -- guitar shaped devices with a fretboard full of backlit keys (to aid in learning chords) instead of strings. While these are marketed as learning guitars, their midi controller capabilies have been generally overlooked (even by Yamaha's own marketing dept). To the best of my ability, I will try to clear that up here.

First off, the good news. This thing sends out a reliable and relatively expressive stream of midi data! Your host sequencer will recieve exactly what you played, with accurate velocity, no extraneous pitch-bends and no tracking delay. Hallelujah!

There are 72 very light action "keys", laid out in a fretboard pattern (12 frets x 6 rows). They depress very easily and light when pressed (handy for cleaning up your playing technique). All keys send midi note-ons ( 28-88 ) and are triggered by both fretting the notes and strumming the triggers (a set of bars on the body, laid out in six-string pattern).

Hidden gem #1: fretting notes (no strum) sends out a very low velocity (vel=14) note-on. This sounds remarkably realistic using the onboard guitar patches, but is worth far more when used with synths or VSTi's. By varying your synths' velocity sensitivity you can add some expressive elements to your performances. Best of all, by lowering or eliminating velocity sensitivity you can play synths simply by fretting notes (no strum necessary). This greatly reduces stray notes, and is a feature found on Starr Labs midi controllers.

Summer Chill - doctorvague ft. Peter D.B.

YouTube Uploaded by doctorvague on Aug 15, 2011

"This was a lot of fun! It was patched up very quickly and improvised in one take. My good friend Peter Dahl-Bredine is triggering samples in NI's Battery which I'm then filtering with a Megaohm Delta filter and a Rob Hordijk Dual Phaser. Everything: loops, samples, Korg Monopoly etc were all routed into and through the modular and mixed in real time to stereo track. Loops came from Stylus RMX and and were mixed at the modular with a custom MIDI controller I built (middle row far left with the 6 red buttons). Sync pulses were sent from MOTU's Volta and divided by a Moon Modular trigger sequencer. As usual, echo is from Modcan's fabulous stereo digital delay. Hope you all enjoy this. We want to do a lot more collaborating with real hand drums, guitar and... well, we have a lot of ideas.

Dirty Electronics at Royal Festival Hall, grain synth workshop

YouTube Uploaded by eddie23a on Aug 15, 2011

"Dirty Electronics FLASH BANG SOLDER - Festival of Britain 60th Anniversary

More info
John Richards (Dirty Electronics) will be creating a large-scale public artwork entitled Hope as part of the Festival of Britain 60th Anniversary at the Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London, 13 and 14 August. The public will be able to drop in to a free workshop and build a tiny 'grain' synthesizer that omits a very short repeated sound and visually concurrent blinking LED. As the weekend progresses, the grains of sound are amassed into an installation to create an evolving sound and visual texture. It is only through a collective effort that the final piece is realised. From the basis of adding 'simple' grains of sound and light, a complex stochastic process and experience is produced. The work explores the themes of mass production and individualism, the hand-made and collective process in the creation of an artwork. A limited edition Festival of Britain Emblem Synth will also be produced in collaboration with Black Country Atelier.

Everything was recorded into Ableton Live 8, and spiced up with some compression and reverb. The Video was editet with Final Cut Pro X and yes its meant to be lo-fi and trashy all the way.
