Hollow Sun SHANGRI LA

via Steve Howell on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

via Hollow Sun where you'll find audio demos on the top right of the site.

"Our intrepid explorers have done it again!

They have returned to HS Towers, tired and weary, khakis ripped and pith helmets slightly the worse for wear, from an arduous expedition in the far east. There, they discovered an ancient machine buried deep in a derelict temple in the Kunlun mountain range of the Tibetan plateau. This immediately proved ideal to re-purpose for Matthias Schuster's Tibetan bowl samples.

With 61 different bowl samples of varying kinds and sizes and made of copper and bronze, there is a remarkable amount of tonality in their own right. However, each one is individually editable with each sample able to be tuned and EQ's and filtered by the multi-mode filter and shaped by two envelopes as well as modulated by an LFO and and envelope. Distortion and bit crunching round off the sonic processing for each of the samples before being passed to the multi-effects...

With chorus, phase shifting, flanging, echo and convolved reverb with a wide range of impulses, the effects complete the processing to transform the raw samples.

Although this is something of a slight departure from other MLMs in the series with samples of acoustic instruments, the organic, naturally 'ring modulated', inharmonic tones of Shangri La will complement the others in the series with the atonal nature of the raw samples.

But don't expect solid basses and soaring leadlines - this is one for abstract soudscapes ... or a sound in a regular track that will make people ask "What the hell was that?" as its subtle impact is felt. This really is a sublime soundset for anyone looking for something out of the ordinary.

This is Obsolete & The Atari Punk Console - VCS Tribute

YouTube Uploaded by thisisobsolete on Aug 18, 2011
via This is Obsolete - be sure to see the site for more.

"I am an artist and outsider engineer living in Brighton on the south coast of England. My work is inspired by vintage technology. It aims to celebrate the abandoned, the derelict and the obsolete."

Video description:
"From Forrest M. Mimm's 1980 publication "Engineer's Notebook: Integrated Circuit Applications" came the stepped tone generator - two 555 timer ICs are configured to create a single square (pulse) wave. Kaustic Machines coined the term Atari Punk Console to describe the circuit as it's output is similar to the sounds of the Atari VCS games console of the 1980s.

The work featured here is a DIY build of an Atari Punk Console inspired analogue synthesiser known as the Dub-Step-Arcade designed by Matt The Modulator (aka Matthew Newlove). As a tribute to it's origins in the dusty circuits of the 1980s the build is housed in a heavily modified Atari VCS enclosure.

Materials used include hand machined matte black acrylic control panel and Atari VCS enclosure, laser engraved gloss black acrylic fascia (RazorLAB), salvaged mains power supply, reconditioned stock Atari VCS DPDT switches, stock arcade machine parts and miscellaneous fixtures, fittings and electronic components."

Deep Bass Nine Analogue Monosynth

YouTube Uploaded by mondowise on Jan 26, 2011

"Just an example of the sound of the Deep Bass Nine TB303 clone which didn't really make it as a 303 clone but did make it as an excelent bass synth, it hasn't got much in the way of sound sculpting possibilities but just has a great sound and presence in the mix."

VERMONA DRM MKII Snare Tweaking

YouTube Uploaded by mondowise on Jan 26, 2011

"As the title suggests 'snare sound tweaking'.........but just to be clear, not a composition or even a jam really, I just programmed in some random bits into the MPC and then started experimenting with the different parameters on the snare voice...as you can hear if your speakers cover the range (my computer monitor speakers are s..t!) it can produce a huge variety of snare type sounds, it can do the 808 snare and the 606 no problem and a load more. You can't do the same roland reproductions on the kik (drum) voices but you can get some great kik sounds out of it nonetheless!

BTW I am not a Vermona rep! I am just passing on my findings...but for your sake if you would consider spending £200 - £300 on a 606! then don't! the DRM MKii/iii will do the 606 and several of the voices of the 808 and a load more and it will cost roughly the same second hand as a 606.........a quarter of the cost of an 808."

NORD LEAD JAPONICA

YouTube Uploaded by mondowise on Jan 28, 2011

"A very early composition on the Nord Lead, I recorded the first part then reversed it and played a second part over that....simple stuff really! but a unique sound emerged.

Enjoy!

BTW my video are the attempts of a beginner at video editing who just wants to provide you guys an gals with a little visual stimulation to go with my sounds, hopefully they will improve and perhaps become a little more complex and dynamic. If you would like to see some more great video work and hear some great electronic compositions check out this guy 'robotpickle' here on you tube, one of the best contributors to electronica here on the tube and with not nearly enough viewings considering his talents!!"

"My first jam with the Kraftwerg, being sequenced by the Revolution via midi. Drums are from the Vermona drm Mkii (best drum synth in the world!!) all being driven by the MPC1000.

Its a 2 bar loop again! with modulation of primarily frequency on both machines and a couple of hits of the remix button on the Revo. They make a formidible pair!

Enjoy"

Roland Fantom XR Demo Test Thingie

YouTube Uploaded by FatSynthDude on Aug 29, 2011

"Got one of these and some expansions to replace my trusty old E-Mu XL-7 for my rompling needs and thought I'd throw this quick little demo kinda thingie together to kind of get a feel of the overall character of the thing/how easy it is to throw performance setups together/how easy it is to tweak presets and build patches from scratch. Some of the patches are presets, some of them are presets that have been slightly edited, and the pad was cobbled together from scratch.

I mostly got this thing as my realistic orchestral/drum machine, but the Orchestral and Dynamic Drums expansions haven't arrived in the mail yet, so that aspect of it hasn't been tested yet. That aside, I have to admit I'm more impressed with this synth than I thought I'd be. I'm more of a hands-on analog guy, so the computer editing is a little slow for my liking, but I think the results are worth the effort. I'm in love with the overall sound of this box and fully expanded, it's really a monster of a synth."

The Speakquencer [2nd prototype]

YouTube Uploaded by BogusNoise on Aug 29, 2011

"2nd prototype video, almost ready to build the completed unit now!
Since the last video, have now got an improved clock circuit, an AND circuit for individual envelope triggers on each step, glide for each channel, and 2 separate envelope and VCA circuits - for controlling 2 devices separately. Will be doing minor tweaking to the envelope and putting Coarse and Fine speed controls on the clock, and mounting it inside a box. The finished device will also have input/output sockets where appropriate, as I intend the architecture to be open enough that this could be used within a modular synthesiser system."
