Monster Mattson EML Modular to be Featured at the PNW Synthfest

Click the pic for the super size shot. See the Mattson EML label for more. Details on the Pacific Northwest Synthfest can be found on the MMTA (Mostly Modular Trade Association) website: http://www.mostlymodular.com/.

Note the two Mattson Mini Modulars stacked to the right of the EML. For those not familiar with George Mattson, he is the man behind Mattson Mini Modular, and previously the Performance Music Systems Syntar, the first self contained synthesizer keytar. The circuits were built by EML for Performance Music Systems. You can read about the Syntar here on Carbon111's site and in this interview from 2006 - there is a great pic of George and Bob Moog checking out the Syntar. And of course see the Syntar label for more. Many of the circuits George designed for the Syntar made their way into his current Mattson Mini Modular. Many of his new designs made it into his new custom EML modular. It's fascinating to see this come full circle in a sense, with EML to Syntar to MMM to the Mattson EML refurbishment project.

WDR Radio Program on Harald Bode October 8

This one in via John Levin:

"Here's the info which was forwarded to me by some of the people involved in producing the program:

'On 10/08/11 at 23.05 European time it´s finally Part two of the Harald Bode story: Westdeutscher Rundfunk 3 Cologne will present "Music Is My Field- Harald Bode: The Art of Engineering and Homestudio Music" It is about traces of his work in different musical styles from the thirties til the eighties, - from "Melodium" melodies to "BarberPolePhaser" sound. And it´s about his own music. If you go to http://www.wdr3.de/open-freiraum/aktuell.html and click "stream"(rechts in der Mitte), you will find the right player for your OS Or: Below stream you will find the "Radiorecorder" ("Stream" and "Radiorecorder" are provided by WDR 3. Sorry I can´t give any support. I recommend "radiorecorder" though for better sound quality.)

Here the announcement by the editor WDR 3 Markus Heuger:
"The story of the inventor of many electronic instruments, one of which was the inspiration for the first Moog Modulars, is also the story of the myth around Electronic sound. In the beginning it was mostly seen as a technological gimmick or miracle, or as a danger for culture itself. Electronic sound since has become an everyday´s part of our musical life. Harald Bode was admidst this evolution. He invented seventeen instruments between 1937 and 1984. You can hear them in academic music of the Fifties, as well as in Disco music of the 80ties. WDR 3 open: FreiRaum presents the witchkitchen of the inventor and "soundpractioner", who lived until 1987. He called his own music "commercial ". His studio and instruments he called "only means ". "What miraculous means!"

Here the announcement by the editor WDR 3 Markus Heuger:
This work was made possible through through support & help by: Peer Bode, Rebekkah Palov, Devin Henry, Andrew Deutsch, Chris McDaniel (Institute of Electronic Arts, Alfred University, Bode Archive/Alfred und Hornell/ USA), Silke Berdux (Deutsches Museum München), Dr Wilhelm Füssl und den Mitarbeitern des Archivs Deutsches Museum Jan Groth, Goethe Schiller Archive Weimar (Germany), Jan Groth, Frau Harting (Bundesarchiv / German State Archiv), Herrn Fritsche und Herrn Rieden (University Bonn), Leslie Bellavance (Dean at School of Art and Design, NYSCC at Alfred University, Alfred USA). Vermona DRM-1 MKIII Analogue Drum Synthesizer with MIDI

via this auction

"The DRM1 MKIII is an analogue drum synthesizer.

It offers eight instruments, each with seven knobs for forming the sound plus a panorama- and a volume-controller. The user interface is absolutely clear and intutitve - one knob, one function.

The instruments on the DRM1 MKII are as following:

KICK
Mainly but not only for making big and fat kick drums.
DRUM1 and DRUM2
Very flexible instruments that can generate kick- and tom sounds a s well as bongos. Anything from zapp to bling and fantastic PIUU...
MULTI
Three oscillators can be detuned and gives you nice cowbell-like sounds. If you like submarines you can create a nice sonar ping.
SNARE
What can we say about that? Well, you get what you expect.
Hi Hat1 and Hi Hat2
That's analogue (heavy- or soft-) metal.
CLAP

Classic analogue hand claps.

The instruments of the DRM1 MKIII can be triggered by MIDI (of course velocity-sensitive). There is also an optional trigger option avilable that connects the drum machine to your analogue step sequencer or whatever gives out gate voltage or switch trigger. Beside the main outputs each channel is equipped with an individual output that also can be used as an channel insert."

Korg Monotribe sync test

YouTube Uploaded by Dovinia on Oct 7, 2011

"Just testing the sync capabilities of my newly aquired Korg Monotribe and thought I'd share the results. This is just a silly little tune made using Doepfer Dark Time sequencing Dark Energy and sending clock out to the Monotribe. Also in the mix: Roland Alpha Juno 1 (strings) and A-100 (background theremin-like leads). Recorded to 4 audio casette tracks using my Tascam 424 MKIII, mastered to Sony wm-d6c and transfered to digital through the line in on my lap top. Who says you need to buy an expensive usb audio interface ?"

Dovinia "Sylvania" - modular synthesizer improvisations

YouTube Uploaded by Dovinia on Oct 7, 2011

"Sounds from my garden blends with the Doepfer A-100. I'm using a Dark Time sequencer for the harp-like arpeggio. For the technically interested: This is an all analog recording multitracked to audio cassette using a Tascam 424 MkIII. Mastered to a Sony wm-d6c and transfered to my Satellite lap top directly through the line in jack using the generic sound recorder application. The reverb and delay ambience in this recording comes from the A-199 Spring Reverb and A-188-1 BBD (4096 stages) modules."

Dubby Red Planet

YouTube Uploaded by salzmanufaktur on Oct 7, 2011

"Foolin' around w/ some Reaktor devices: A Drum sampler and 2 self sequenced synthesizers.
Akkord (German for "chord") is part of the Electronic Instruments 2 bundle, it's included in Reaktor 5.5.
I found Dubby Red Planet in the Reaktor User Lib a couple of years ago but I still don't have a clue what the hell is going on. The vid is recorded in realtime straight from the desk. No MIDI notes were harmed in the making of this film.

Dubby is based on another Reaktor.ens. Peter Gines, the developer of Dubby Red Planet said:
"There's a lot of mystery in this instrument - I spent a good amount of time dissecting the original Pole-onaise and learning how to create snapshots for it. I think I still haven't gotten to the bottom of it in some ways; maybe it's because it was designed for an older version of Reaktor...?"

Dubby Red Synthoid

Uploaded by salzmanufaktur on Oct 7, 2011

"Foolin' around w/ some Reaktor User Lib devices:
Silverbird, a drum sampler
Synthoid, somewhat of a self sequenced pad synth
Dubby Red Planet is hard to describe. I'm calling it a self sequenced crackling machine.

The vid is recorded in realtime straight from the desk. No MIDI notes were harmed in the making of this film."

Indeed, Peter - a lot of mystery. That's why I love it!"

Intellijel Korgasmatron Sample #1

Intellijel Korgasmatron Sample #1 by starkaudio
"The Intellijel Korgasmatron is a fine, *fine* filter. Technically a "Dixon 2164 Series, Dual Voltage Controlled Filter and Crossfade."

This is NOT A DEMO. A demo would be me running the filter through many test tones and exercising all it's features. I do not plan on doing this. Instead enjoy this 6-ish minute sample of me noodling around with a more or less static bassline and fiddling with the filter, exploring it's sound and seeing what I can get out of it. The setup:

A René's clocks are being driven from Ableton Live via a Kenton USB solo midi to CV interface, just using clock out. Clock out is running into a 4MS Rotating Clock Divider which is driving the x and y clocks on the René, The René's quantized voltage out is driving a Tiptop Audio Z3000 who's sawtooth output is running into the Korgasmatron. The René's x-gate out is pinging both a MATHS channel 4 which is driving the FM of the Korgasmatron's B-channel, and an MFB ADSR who's envelope is controlling a Malekko Heavy Industries VCA that everything is running into before heading back to Ableton for recording. There is also a slow cycling ramp coming from the MATHS channel one that I am running into the Korgasmatron's FM1 input on channel A.

Through most of this sample I spend my time tweaking channel A's cutoff, Q and Q-drive, In-A level and FM1 on Channel A. Occasionally I change the access point on the René and tweak the Q and Q-drive on Channel B."
