Switched On Presents Solderless Breadboarding Workshop

"Presented by Switched On School of Music Electronics & Delptronics

Learn the art of basic electronic design, walk home with knowledge and something to play with!

Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00pm
At Switched On Music Electronics
1111 E. 11th Street, Austin, TX

About the workshop:

Mickey Delp of Delptronics will be leading another beginner electronics workshop on solderless breadboarding. A breadboard is a temporary circuit board used for prototyping. Electronic components simply plug into sockets on the breadboard with no soldering required. The workshop will cover the identification and function of basic electronic components, how to read a schematic circuit diagram, and how to translate a diagram into a working circuit on a breadboard. We will also discuss how to go from the breadboarded prototype to a permanent device. You will build several circuits during the workshop and you get to take home all the parts, including everything you see in the image below and more.

Come to the workshop learn how to build your own electronic musical instruments!

$20 (instruction) + $20 (for parts) = $40 total

Custom Black Keyfax Phatboy

via this auction

"Two things to know about this: 1. it's 100% functional and 2. it's been painted matte black and been given new, soft-touch knobs. I modified this because I didn't really care for the yellow, and it looks quite nice sitting on a desktop or synth. Now, since the labeling has been painted over, I'll also provide a diagram of how to hook everything up. It's a pretty basic MIDI controller, though. One knob to select the channel, and five selectable preset templates for what control messages get sent out. Anything that comes in the MIDI IN gets echo'd to the OUT. Comes with a power supply."

Reactable Mobile Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary - Half Price Through Oct 27

"One year of connecting with music in a whole new way!

The Reactable concept is all about connecting with music in a whole new way, via a visual tangible interaction that is meant to enrich the experience of the performer and his audience.

When Apple put multi-touch technology in reach, there was no question that this would be a perfect fit. With the added benefit of mobility, Reactable found one more way to connect and a year ago Reactable Mobile was born.

Since its launch Reactable Mobile has reached the top positions in the musical apps category in the Appstore in all the major markets: It was not only featured as App of the week and New and noteworthy by Apple, but has positioned itself at the Top 10 Music App Worldwide and was awarded 2nd and 3rd Best Music App Ever.

Best of all, with the possibility to create and enjoy music on the go, we were able to reach thousands of people who embraced the concept and helped us to raise it to a whole new level, by creating and sharing music, posting videos and giving us great feedback.

To celebrate the first anniversary, from the 17th until the 27th of October 2011 we will offer Reactable Mobile for iOS and Android for half the price, so all those who still don’t have the app can enjoy it and become a part of the growing Reactable community.

And for all of you already enjoying the app, we have new featured content from Prime Loops and award winning DJ/producer Gui Boratto with loops specially created for this occasion."

Looptastic Halloween Sound Effects For iPhone & iPod

YouTube Uploaded by downloadloops on Oct 16, 2009

"This video demonstrates the Halloween sound effect loops for Looptastic. Sound design by Jason Donnelly (Dj Puzzle) aka Khemique. Here you will find creaky floors, screams, spoken word, evil laughter, rain, thunder, doors slamming, footsteps, and more.

Khemique is an Industrial EBM group / side project I started a couple years ago with friend Johann Smit. Check us out here http://www.khemique.com

This was an extremely fun project to work on. Sound Trends hired me to create this set for their app Looptastic. I immediately looked around the house for things to record. Everything fell into place perfectly. I hung two microphones out a window from our TV room during a storm. The gutters above stuck out just enough to protect the mics from the rain. Then there was rolling thunder and lots of it. It was so perfect. Luckily we had loose floor board that creaked when stepped on. Our cat is very vocal so he had a little something say in this set. The synthesizers used were a Korg Micro X and a Nord Lead 3. Singer and friend from my group Johann Smit performed all the scary voices.

Get this app with these sounds for free! http://ipadloops.com/halloween-sound-effects-for-iphone-and-ipod/

Skull-Face 4093 oscillator synth

via this auction
"SKULL-FACE QUAD NAND SYNTH.

An ambient yet horrific light source and square-wave nosie maker.

The synth is based around a 4093 quad nand gate CMOS chip.
Capable of hideously beautiful beepy noise.
The 4 cascaded oscillators interact with each other to create a relentless range of synth tones.
The power starve dial adds further modulation and manipulation of the oscillations.

The noise-making circuit is built into a Halloween skull toy.
It was supposed to have a flickering red LED in it, but I swapped it for another, more exciting lighting circuit,
This circuit has several different single-colour options as well as a colour cycling mode.
The controls are as follows:

4 dials on top to control the rate and tone of the oscillations.
1 dial for the 4093 power starve.
2 switches; 1 momentary push button and 1 toggle switch to start the noises.
1 momentary push button to cycle through the LED colour options.
1 output jack located on the back side.
1 on/off switch on the underside of the cube.
A PP3/9v battery holder on the back.

The SKULL-FACE fits well into the palm and can be enjoyed by anyone with a passion for harsh, grinding noise terrorism and pretty colours.
It's powered by a single 9v battery which is housed in the holder at the back of the SKULL-FACE.
There's a 6.35mm jack socket for hooking up to your amp/mixer/effects.
There's no internal speaker!"

The Circuit Molester Covers Tara Busch for The Bob Moog Foundation

A couple of weeks ago I sent my Moog Tribute Edition Little Phatty back to the factory in Asheville, NC for a factory upgrade. In addtion to updating the internal software, the good folks at Moog added some CV(control voltage) outputs to interface with older/pre midi synth gear. I'd been experimenting with CV in my DIY and circuit bent gadgets so I was excited to play around with the real deal in the Phatty.

In one of my phone conversations with the Moog factory someone mentioned that Tara Busch from AnalogSuicide.com was hosting a remix contest to help raise money for the Moog Foundation's student outreach program and as soon as I got my Phatty back I was on a mission.

My main studio was rented out for the month and since there was a deadline I pieced together a makeshift laptop studio in my dining room.

and Modular Moog

Oh yeah, I had never used Ableton Live before. Using a friends laptop I struggled for a week but I finally got the hang of it and got my track in 1 day before the deadline.

Someone that is used to hearing me play with Grayson Capps and the Lost Cause Minstrels might be a little suprised by the electronic nature of this song but it's still me. I've just decided to embrace my inner Circuit Molester and explore the realms of electronic music. I'm having a blast!

Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000

via this auction
"This is a rare and lovely sampler/synth. It's had all the upgrades available giving it 8 separate outputs and I think more memory. It was used to write the theme for the TV show 'The Net' back in the late 80's or early 90's and I've owned it since 1995. I had it serviced and repaired by The Synthesizer Service Centre back in 1999 and hardly used it since I moved to a smaller place. It's a 16 bit machine that uses 4 bits for the operating system leaving 12 for the sound giving it a unique 'edge' and some lovely gutsy results. the built in patches are classic vintage sounds and it does wonders with whatever you record in or upload from a floppy disc. If you're looking for that unique, authentic, vintage sound in a machine that's a joy to mess around with look no further. I've loved it a lot but it needs to go to a good home where it will be used.

The down sides are. It has some damage to one of the output sockets which still works and can be easily replaced. It sometimes sends tiny amounts of midi data on the mod wheel channel which shows up on midi recorders but so far has never actually caused any midi events. Being such a unique device the OS is a bit weird but if I can get my head round it anyone can. It comes with full manuals so no problems getting it going."
