IDOW & MATRIXSYNTH Modular Pic of the Week - Week 1 Contest Winner!

"Our first winner of the Modular Pic of the Week contest goes to Henrik Nordvargr Björkk for his "Small portable setup for live use!"

Since 1988, Henrik Nordvargr Björkk has systematically explored the broad field of the post-industrial music scene. In parallel to his band activities, he has pursued a solo career with a vast amount of record releases. He is widely considered one of the most influential and productive post-industrial artists ever. You can check out his work at www.nordvargr.com.

----

We'd like to give a big thanks and congratulations to Henrik Nordvargr Björkk for his submission! We appreciated the personal touch to Henrik's set-up and photo. This is the 1st week of a 30-week contest, and we are looking forward to many more modular photo submissions, so please keep 'em coming! For details on how to submit and what you can win, see this post.

For more info on the upcoming 'I Dream of Wires' documentary, be sure to see the trailer and IndieGoGo fund raising campaign here."

Side note: I created an IDOW label for all posts pertaining to the film. You'll be able to look back at the weekly contest winners there as well.

PNW SynthFest Rocked!

And so does this guy. More on that in a sec.

First off, I promised SynthFest posts (FB site) would start today. Turns out it's took a bit longer to offload the video off my iPhone 4S and pics off my Canon Rebel T2i than expected. 26.51GB spread across 21 videos and 1.4GB spread across 212 pics. It literally took most of the day today (I had to step out for some family obligations - 'Puss in Boots') and a bit of the evening last night to offload everything. Tomorrow I will start the upload starting with pics.

Anyway, back to the pic. So why does this guy and for that matter this pic rock? Because that is Scott Jaeger, the man behind The Harvestman. On his shoulder? The digital Roland JD-800. This pic rocks in so many ways when you think about it. Aside from Scott rocking as usual, his company, The Harvestman's tagline is "Digital Audio Electronics." He is one of the most respected men in the modular and synthesis scene and he commands digital. The world of synthesis has had many vs. arguments in time, but probably the most notorious has been analog vs. digital and tactile knobs and sliders vs. menu driven synths. The Roland JD-800 attempted to bridge the gap at a time when analog was frowned on and most synths were primarily menu driven. Roland came out with an all digital rompler that had a slider laden interface historically (at the time) associated with analog synths. When you think of the history of synths you start with not only analog, but modular. It all started with modular synths. Then came self contained analog synths, followed by digital. In the last decade we saw the resurgence of the modular scene primarily via analog modules. The Harvestman not only explored digital in the modular market, but embraced it, with "Digital Audio Electronics." And there he is, the man behind it all with the JD-800 in hand. That Rocks. And yes, that is one heavy synth. Thanks goes to Computer Controlled for pointing that out in the comments.

"These panels give you the full 17 inches of modules, so the system density is one space more than Serge panels, and 3 more than an M-boat.

Unlike Serge systems, each module has it's own panel so you can rearrange the system at will. Each front panel is actually a single sided PCB with front panel graphics silkscreened on one side, and traces on the other. Circuit boards are mounted in card slots that are soldered to the rear of the front panel. All panel mount components are soldered to the panel which mean no flying wires to the panel, very clean and lightweight design. Almost all the IC's on the boards are socketed so repairs are much faster and easier."

Diabolical Devices CIRCUIT BENT Casio SK-1

via this auction

"This is a professionally circuit-bent Realistic Concertmate 500, which is the same synth as the famed Casio SK-1, just sold under a different brand name.

It was circuit bent by Diabolical Devices in the US, who are famed all over the world for their circuit-bending prowess.

It features a 20 point patch bay, 6 mystery switches on the side that muzz up the sound and cause all sorts of strange effects.

The patch bay allows you to connect one part of the circuit with another, to produce strange mutations in the sound generation process. You can't damage the machine like this.

It has an internal LFO (controlled by the second large knob from the left) that is patchable to any of the points via the purple patch hole, and a light sensor on the right whose sensitivity is controlled by the leftmost big knob.

This is also patchable into the bay via the blue patch hole.

The two metal switches on the far right control whether these controls are active or not, and this is indicated by the lights next to them turning blue or red.

As with all circuit bent devices, some combinations will crash the keyboard and you'll have to restart it - possibly also sticking on some amazing sound in the process.

The best thing is just to play around until you get something good, then record it.

All the normal Casio SK-1 functions are still active - with all the controls turned off, and no patches, this is just like a regular SK-1.

It comes with three high-quality patch cables, and a power adaptor (7.5v).

It would be perfect for anyone looking for new and exciting sounds that cannot be made any other way!"

"!!!!!!!FREE FOR A LIMITED TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!
iPhase is a generative music application made by Mikael Holmqvist.

Create amazing beats and melodies with the swipe of your fingers and watch it bounce back and forth on the iPhase grid. Choose from 5 different instruments and drum kits and 14 different musical scales.

Make sure to use loudspeakers or headphones for best possible sound quality!

- Make more complex and better sounding beats with "bounceEdges"
- Save/Load function
- SHARE your beats to the iPhase Community and listen/play along/vote for others.
- Play iPhase arcade modes
---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS/DETAILS
---------------------------------------------------

-SWIPE in any direction to create a TONE. Tones are higher towards the top and right side of the grid. The tones will move on the grid in the swipe direction and continue bouncing between the edges of the grid and the start position of the tone. Every grid edge have its own instrument and you can change the setup whenever you want using the instrument buttons.

- TAP the grid to create a BOUNCE EDGE. When a tone hit a bounce edge, it will turn 90 degrees and change instrument. Tap again to change the orientation of the bounce edge and tap a third time to remove the bounce edge from the grid.

-The tones are arranged in PENTATONIC MUSICAL SCALES which makes every swipe sound good. You can change the scales choosing from a total of 14 major and minor scales - the possibilities are endless!

-Use the PLAY/PAUSE BUTTON to pause your beat. Tones can still be created in pause mode and this can be used to make your beat more precise.

-Use the LOOP MODE TOGGLE BUTTON to switch loop mode on and off. This can be used to first create a cool beat in loop mode and then switch it off to start playing some melody to your beat.

-SHAKE your device to create a RANDOM BEAT. Good when you run out of ideas and want some inspiration from chance.

-SAVE your beats with the SAVE BUTTON. They will then be found in "my saved beats" on the main menu.

-----------THE iPHASE COMMUNITY-------------
