Custom Slim Phatty

"I wanted to write in again and show off the custom Slim Phatty I just built. The Little Phatty is great, but I wanted to build a tiny bass/lead synth. Nearly the same process as before.. Slim Phatty is the brains, an Alesis Q25 is the controller. The Q25 is hardwired for power into the Slim Phatty because I didn't want two power cords to worry about (totally nerve wracking to open it up and start soldering, huge thanks to Rosser at Moog Music for some quick pointers). I don't mind having the MIDI cable linking the two, so I didn't hardwire it. It's currently built out of Birch plywood and painted weird, but I'd like to rebuild it out of walnut whenever I get around to it. I'm considering making a built-to-order kit where you would just supply your own Phatty, but I'm trying to gauge interest first. Here's a few photos of the process and the completed synth."See below for a sky blue painted version.

Remove the tone bars from the storage area in back of amp, place them on the keys of any full-size keyboard, plug the leads into the amp, and play the keyboard - and you can make vintage synth sounds using an acoustic piano as the keys! The unit has controls for tone, voice, articulation of vibrato, speed of vibrato and master tuning. It also has an input and volume control for a microphone..."

"In trying to get to know the new modules of my Buchla I decided to try something I've wanted to do for a long time, use voltage to address a sequencer. It's a very flexible way to get more out of 16 steps than one first might think. So I use te 250e in strobed voltage address mode, that is whenever it receives a pulse it jumps to the step corresponding to the current address voltage. By carefully adjusting the timing of the address voltage and the timing of the strobe pulse I get a pattern that takes a number of steps to repeat itself, thus making those 16 steps sound like many more.
I also use the 227e system interface to fade in and out of effects. Using the rear channels as dry and the front channels as wet you can get both stereo fading and effects fading at the same time. It's like voltage controlled effects on the whole mix coming out of the synth.

The ET-4 continues where the ET-3 Electro-Theremin left off. The instrument has been updated with new features and the playing interface has been completely redesigned to be more accurate and expressive. Inspired by the Ondes Martenot's "au ruban" controller, pitch is controlled by moving an adjustable finger-ring while amplitude is controlled by two pressure-sensitive keys. The ET-4 can interface with external synthesizer gear through Control Voltage (CV) outputs for the ring controller and amplitude keys. "Demo of this old fashioned styled synth. It's an interesting sounding app but the dials are difficult to use. Hopefully a future version will clear up a few of the issues that will make this synth a must have. Will not work with a keyboard controller."
