IDOW & MATRIXSYNTH Modular Pic of the Week - Week 4 Contest Winner!

"Our fourth winner of the Modular Pic of the Week contest goes to Mesak for his 'Se-quenching.'

Mesak is a musician and producer coming originally from Turku, Finland. Releases are mostly electro, techno & skweee, but various projects include also rather experimental electronic music. At the moment he´s working on music and running the label Harmönia in Berlin Germany.

Check out Mesak's music on SoundCloud: soundcloud.com/mesak

We'd like to give a big thanks and congratulations to Mesak for his submission! This is the 4th week of a 30-week contest, and we are looking forward to many more modular photo submissions, so please keep 'em coming! For details on how to submit and what you can win, see this post.

For more info on the upcoming 'I Dream of Wires' documentary, be sure to see the trailer and IndieGoGo fund raising campaign here.

See the IDOW label for all posts pertaining to the film including the weekly contest winners."

Buchla - Patch 3, 4 & 5

"First experiments with a couple of 200e modules: 281e, 250, 266e..."

Buchla - Patch 4

"Further experiment with the Model 281e.
The Buchla - Patch 3 video was made after this one, based on quite the same patch."

Buchla - Patch 5

"Simple non-linear transformations with the 256e Control Voltage Processor and dynamic variation of the waveform amplitude on the 259e via warp control voltage. Other modules involved: 250, 281e, 266e, 292e, 210e, 206e.

It is really annoying to loose all the interesting sound properties of a patch which is mostly based on low droning freqs, deep basses and high dynamics. It is of course due to high video compression, but also to the fact that I am recording directly to the camera and its built-in mic of poor quality. Should envisage to record separately to soundcloud (effort to expend)."

Symbolic Sound Releases Kyma X.82

Update: some pics & video added

"KYMA X.82: A SYNTHESIS ENGINE FOR ALTERNATIVE CONTROLLERS & INTERACTIVE SOUND DESIGN
New software features twenty-one new keyboard-controllable morphing synthesis algorithms, support for 14-bit MIDI controllers, polyphonic aftertouch, & publication of the Kyma OSC protocol for third-party developers

Champaign, Illinois - November 21, 2011 - The culmination of two years of research and development, Kyma X.82, a new software update for the Kyma X/Pacarana sound synthesis engine, is specifically designed to take advantage of the expressive capabilities and extended control offered by today's new crop of alternative controllers and cutting edge musical interface designs.

The recent explosion of interest in new musical interfaces and alternative controllers for sound design and music has created a need for sound synthesis and processing engines that can take full advantage of the increased bandwidths, higher resolution, lower latencies, continuous pitch and velocity values, and subtle expressive capabilities of these new controllers. Symbolic Sound has a long history of support for alternative and extended controllers in Kyma X, and Symbolic Sound's newest release, Kyma X.82, introduces several additional features to support these innovative musical interfaces and alternative controllers.

Features in Kyma X.82 include over 20 new morphing sound synthesis algorithms, support for 14-bit MIDI controllers, and the publication of Kyma's OSC protocol to support and inspire future developments of new instruments and controllers that can exploit Kyma's responsive, high-resolution sound synthesis and processing algorithms in a seamless, plug-and-play manner.

Whether you are a sound designer performing expressive creature voices to picture, an electronic musician performing live on stage with alternative controllers, or a composer using physical controllers to create dense multi-layered textures of sound in the studio, you will be able to take advantage of Kyma X.82's ease of parameter-mapping, low latency, high-resolution parameters, and legendary sound quality. Additional features of the new release include enhanced multichannel panning and effects, higher quality spectral analysis, and a 40% speedup in the software executing on the host computer.

Spectral Audio Cyclus 3 MIDI Sequencer

via this auction

"A fairly specialised piece of gear. 8-track MIDI sequencer with live-edit & randomisation functions: A device to compose & jam or play back your pre-programmed tracks. There's elements of an old-style analogue sequencer (16 steps, values adjustable via the frontpanel knobs, everything is tweakable realtime) and digital (pattern memories, copy, paste sysex dump etc).

manufacturer's page

*107 patterns, each of
*8 tracks, each with
*5 subtracks (note, velocity, note-length, note-time & 5th track with either CC value or extra note)
*each track AND the containing pattern) can have 1-16 steps - this can get you very interesting overlapping repeating patterns!
*track mute page
*CC slide rates between steps
*step time recording
*transposition, randomisation of any or all parameters in a track

It's a device that's needed a decent youtube demo for years. This one shows some of the live tweaking in action.

I have just installed the latest software (1.09) + I have the original manual, AU power supply & rack ears! Grab the manual from Spectral Audio & have a read - it's nowhere near as complex as something like the Signal Arts sequencer..."

AOS Demo Pt.3 - Filter Pinging and MonoPoly Arp-Trig

Uploaded by BugBrand on Nov 18, 2011

"Pt. 3 of 3.

I made a V-Trig to S-Trig converter to turn the BugMod gate signals (regular 0 to +10V) into what the Korg Mono/Poly needs (+15 to 0 V) - simple transistor jobby off the 'net. This opens up a load of possibilities!

Then showing how you can use the PRC3A SV Filter to make drum sounds - here a bass and then a 2nd one for hi-freq pings.

And a VCO passing through the WaveFolder.

Goes pretty freeform at the end...

(recorded straight to camera, so the sound isn't the best... Rough edits..)

Here's a simple test, 6 drum sounds from the Tempest and a randomized acid bass line to fill out the mix.

The kick drum has been programmed with one triangle wave, bit of pitch and amp envelope and a light click from the digital oscillator.

Rest of the drums are all Tempest's digital (sample) oscillators, just like the real 909."

"Some of my patches on the Korg Electribe EA-1. The synth won a "Thinny" award in 1999 for being the thinnest sounding, lowest fidelity synth not intended to be a toy. I think it still holds this title today. The worlds first disposable synth. Soon became a doormat in many studios. I use it as a noisemachine and a sequencer. Delay effect by the Korg Kaoss Pad."

Repose in C major

YouTube Uploaded by davidryle on Nov 19, 2011

"Slowed everything down from an earlier patch, rewire the clocking and reset the pitch voltages for an entirely different feel from the last session. Actually, much more work than just that but essentially the idea. This was not patched from scratch as usual.
A lot of fun coaxing some flittering pitches out of the MFOS quad quantizer to an oscillator sent through the Q107 filter, which was the last voice mixed into the piece. Also had fun mangling the mid tones coming from the Oakley vco with the CHaQuO. Havoc tuning never sounded so peaceful.
I plan to record about an hour of this just rolling along for a loop to sleep by but the melodic stuff will have to be randomized a bit more.
Another noteworthy thing was the use of three part chord structures from the Q960 and Q119 to six oscillators. The effort to plan each chord change was time consuming. Something close to composition (for a change)."
