Resonations

Resonations from bar|none on Vimeo.

Soundplane + KYMA playing a model of a resonating string instrument. What instrument? Something unknown but wonderful and expressive.

Imaginary instruments are the world that is KYMA.

The sound is a resonation synth that models initial attack and picking of a string + the resonations and feedback associated with a resonating instrument body. More pressure means more feedback and energy into the resonations.

Spent some time with this sound to make it respond properly with the soundplane.
Faster hits and you hear the picking. Vibrato and you hear the scraping on the strings.

I can't tell you how this feels to play but I can say that you forget this is a controller and it feels like playing something tactile like a real instrument.

This uses the Madronalabs Soundplane to send OSC to KYMA directly via ethernet, no MIDI here. The soundplane client supports zeroconf discovery of OSC capable devices, so KYMA pacarana appears as an OSC destination and that is all required to connect the two. Symbolic Sound helped with the integration.

The result is very high resolution control of the sound that you can feel as you play the Soundplane.

Adventure Time End Credits Song Cover Christmas Island

"My cover of The Adventure Time end credits song, Christmas Island, originally by Ashley Eriksson. These are my best adventuring pals Spooky and Polly. Polly recently started playing the piano, and it's tops blooby."

Anyone ID the organ with built in rhythm section? Omnichord gets a label in this one as well, so I'm assuming they are the higher octave strummed chords.

Update via The Analog Lab in the comments: "The organ is an Optigan!"

"For your consideration is this vintage Keio Synthesizer Traveler "Singing Geisha" wah/fuzz/synth effects pedal. This particular example, serial number 720147, is in very excellent all original condition. It works perfectly, sounds incredibly interesting, and with some familiarity, it becomes a very expressive and completely unique voice. With 4 separate volume/blend knobs related to different features of the pedal along with a traditional wah-style foot-operated pitch control, and 2 stomp switches, the pedal is actually incredibly versatile. The singing tone is not reminiscent of the "siren" feature of concurrent Shin-Ei units, and as mentioned, the pitch of which can actually be controlled, producing a pleasant theremin-esque synth sound."

"This model has been cleaned of any previous battery leakage and has had a new lithium ion battery professionally installed. It will keep your patches intact perfectly for decades and will not destroy your motherboard as many of these have had problems."

Anyone know if these are known to leak like the KORG Polysix?

Ucreate Music by Mattel: Loop Mangling FUN!

YouTube Published on Jul 31, 2012 by coloringpad

You can still find these on eBay.

"Great loop mangling toy! Don't sleep!

At the risk of the wrath of the internet...

Here's an open letter to MATTEL:

To Mattel and the makers of the Ucreate Music,

What this device can do is pretty amazing. It has limitations, but essentially you have created a sound mangling device that, in all its lo-fi deliciousness, is fun and engaging for musicians to play with and use as an audio effect. The effects section goes deeper than what I would expect from any kids toy. It reminds me of the Casio SK-1, in that it was an innovative sampling tool with potential, and clearly made its mark after production. I know you have discontinued the software support for this product and stopped producing the Ucreate, and that's fine. There are really good ideas within the concept, and I publicly plead with you to consider them for a future, more advanced product design.

Here we go!

Effects
KEEP: 2 Loop Mangling Effects, Delay. Further enhance & deepen Filter, Phaser, Flanger
LOSE: Distortion, Tremolo Pulse
ADD: Pitch change, robot effects, glitch

Loops
KEEP: Sampling, Looping, uploading loops
LOSE: Preloaded samples, make all banks for samples, disable restrictions on file format.
ADD: 4 More Sample A/B banks

Controls
KEEP: Record button, hold button, mic/line button
REPLACE: Tempo up/down with sweepable knob, move volume knob to top, change joystick bulb to joystick?

Ins/Outs
KEEP: 1/8" stereo jacks will do, most musicians will want ¼"

Materials
Go aluminum.

Like this video if you would buy this product with the suggestions I have made above.

Bought this for two dollars on clearance. Having been looking for one for a couple years, I was very lucky to run across it."

"This Synsonics "Drums" drum machine/synthesizer is in excellent working order and very clean (seems to have been never used). This machine was marketed as a toy, but can produce some really cool sounds with the tone wheel and other features, and has the audio outputs of a upper-level drum machines (1/4 in. headphone jack, stereo jacks, ACC jack, and input for a 9 volt DC power source -- was not originally included, nor included in auction) plus on-board speakers. Comes complete with original stereo cables, users manual, and Synsonic brand drumsticks. Original box with flip open window is included, but has some wear (creases, window is slightly loose, etc). This item, especially this model, is very hard to find with everything here, would be awesome for any collector of 80's/90's toys, but also an amazing instrument for any musician making new but rarely heard vintage beats. Don't miss out!"

The Ensoniq is cool. I edited the patch with my old G4 laptop and sound-diver. Its getting sequenced (reverb mix) parameter changes from Ableton Live. Acidlab Autobot live improv demo

YouTube Published on Jul 31, 2012 by shane etter

"Live improv over a new Reverb And The Verse song. This is meant as a demo video for 'tap write mode' on the Autobot, which I can see using on lots of future tracks. This thing has totally changed my feeling towards my euro-rack, in that its now really inspirational tonally. Before, it was mostly an afterthought.
The Acidlab Autobot is a 303 sequencer for eurorack; it has no sound of its own. It is driving a Cwejman VM-1 on really basic settings using a lowpass and a Sawtooth wave. The cv/gate are driving the Cwejman, while the Accent out is sent to filter frequency.
I have intentionally turned down the song to showcase the Autobot better.

Signal path: eurorack to Speck Xtramix to RME Fireface 800."

Dave Smith Instruments is looking for an entry-level software engineer to join our team.
Requirements/experience:

Embedded C programming, ideally with the PIC processor family
Assembly language
Audio DSP, ideally with Sharc processors

Deep understanding of music synthesizers is essential!
Hardware knowledge in both digital and analog circuits

DSI is a very small company and we do not have a Human Resources department or a even a a full-time HR person. As such, we will not be responding to applications unless we are interested in talking with you. Please do not apply if you do not already know a lot about synthesizers! Also, we cannot compete with other larger tech companies in salaries and we are looking for entry-level applicants, so please keep that in mind. We will only consider local candidates who are able to work at our office in San Francisco.

All that being said, it's a great opportunity for the qualified, motivated candidate and we have fully paid medical and a great working environment. Please send your resumé and current salary."

Arp 2600 Modular Synthesizer Grey Face w/ Moog Filter + Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"For those unaware, this grey panel is the superior Arp2600 to the orange panel version that has the original (quasi legal) filter. Moog sued Arp in the mid 70s [not true] and won the lawsuit for Arp stealing their filter design. The later orange panel arps have an inferior filter which takes away a lot of the character that makes a 2600 sound like a 2600. If you open up the inside of it you will see the filter is covered by black plastic cover, this serves no purpose other than for Arp to hide the design theft."

It's my understanding there was no law suite and rather Moog approached ARP who then changed the design. If anyone wants to chime in feel free to in the comments or shoot me an email.

Fender Chroma Polaris

via this auction

This one has some issues.

"Up for the bid, a vintage Chroma Polaris from Fender that was designed for the most part by ARP design team right before Fender acquired ARP's assets.

This unit is in somewhat rough physical condition (due to some rust on the back of the case) but it appears to be working properly except for a few buttons/leds that don't appear to respond (it's the buttons in the right column of the "Assignable Control" section: Bend Lever Range, Vibration Delay, Osc1 Vibration, Osc2 Vibration, Osc2 Env and Detune button - I marked them on one of the pictures). They were intermittent at fist (sometimes worked sometimes didn't) but now they don't work at all. I'm not sure if this is just some cable connection or the buttons just broke down but since there are narrowed down to just one section, I suspect it may be just a loose wire somewhere. HOWEVER, PLEASE CONSIDER THOSE BUTTONS AS NON-FUNCTIONING WHEN BIDDING!

The Ring Mod led also doesn't light up but the button itself seems to be working (at least I think it's working because when I press it, the sound changes). Otherwise, the synth appears to work fine (to my best knowledge, although I haven't tested the MIDI ports recently so I'm not sure if they work). All sliders appear to function and no slider caps are missing as you see on the pictures. Please examine the pictures and ask questions before you bid!"

"Major Update to iPad and iPhone Looper “Loopy” Brings Pro-Level Capabilities

A major update to indie developer A Tasty Pixel’s app Loopy has hit the App Store today, bringing both enhanced usability for inexperienced users, and professional-grade enhancements for more advanced musicians. Loopy lets musicians and tinkerers alike rapidly build multi-layered musical pieces by recording or importing looped layers of sound.

Dover, UK (PRWEB) July 30, 2012

Independent software developer A Tasty Pixel today announces the latest major update to its live-looping iOS app Loopy. The update includes a big overhaul of the app’s sophisticated audio engine, bringing an entirely new level of audio quality, responsiveness, and audio hardware support.

Loopy is an app that brings live-looping, an innovative music creation technique previously limited to the realm of expensive hardware and complicated computer setups, to anyone with an iPad or iPhone. Furthermore, the app does it in style, with a sleek and tactile interface.

'The big audio engine improvements in this update are going to make Loopy an even more appealing candidate for replacing the expensive equipment previously required for live-looping,' said Loopy developer and independent software company A Tasty Pixel founder Michael Tyson. 'The changes bring a lightning-fast 6-7 millisecond response time, top-quality audio mixing, and support for a wide range of multichannel audio hardware including the Alesis iO Dock and IO4, and the Tascam US range.'

Loopy introduced MIDI support in an earlier update, which allows it to be extensively controlled by foot pedals such as the Roland FC-200 or the Behringer FCB 1010, or tempo-synchronized with other equipment.

Device Requirements: iPad, iPhone 3Gs or newer, or 3rd-generation iPod Touch or newer (microphone accessory recommended) running iOS 4.0 or later.

Pricing and Availability: Loopy, the iPhone-only version of the live looper app, is available for $2.99 exclusively through the App Store in the Music category. Loopy HD, the iPad and Universal version of the app, is available for $7.99 through the App Store.

About A Tasty Pixel

A Tasty Pixel specializes in apps with beautiful and functional user interfaces – software that works like an extension of oneself, with the charm and elegance that make it a pleasure to use. A Tasty Pixel currently has two iOS apps available on the App Store -- The Cartographer and Loopy. A Tasty Pixel products have been extensively featured by Apple and have been finalists on several occasions for the prominent iPhone industry competition, Best App Ever Awards, hosted by 148 Apps.

http://loopyapp.com/

"What's New in Version 1.2

Loopy HD has been taken apart, given a good spit-and-polish and put back together! This version features a brand-spanking new audio engine with improved mix quality, much lower latency, better synchronisation, and support for multi-channel audio interfaces.

- Multi channel audio interface support
- Retina support (New iPad)
- Big improvements in punch in/out interaction and track gestures, generally
- Count-in quantize length setting
- Toggle track sync via MIDI
- SoundCloud update
- Added Japanese localization, and updated Italian one
- Many assorted interface and workflow improvements"

"XBS has been making an effort to do more tech related stuff this month. In for repair today is a Roland TR-909 in messed up shape. Someone had tried to refurbish it and made most of it’s age and design related problems worse!..

So, I have to say that this is one of the most annoying designs ever conceived by man from a standpoint of repair and maintenance. The boards barely fit in on top of each other inside the case with some long shaft pots going through the switch board from the voice board. Everything needs to be taken apart to get to the switch board and that’s the one that gets the most abuse!"
