4 part video series for this auction.

"ETI 4600 synthesiser demonstration. This is being sold on eBay from August 15th 2012 and ending on August 25th. World-wide shipping is available. This is an overview showing the complete 1970s vintage analogue synthesiser with an overview of the modules and layout.

This synth was a state-of-the-art design when it was conceived back in the1970s. Designed by Trevor Marshall in 1973, this synthesiser was offered in kit form by Maplin Electronic Supplies (in the UK). The parts cost was around £500, and was said to match the performance of synthesisers costing £1500 - that equates to a staggering £15,600 in today's money (according to www.thisismoney.co.uk calculator). This is a collector's dream! This actual synthesiser is featured on the home page of www.eti4600synthesiser.org.uk website, is fully working, and is in great condition considering it is some 35 years old. This synthesiser was built by me in 1977 when I was a teenager and has remained in my possession until now.

Not only is this a great asset for lovers of nostalgia and early electronic music history, but also for the modern day sound design engineer who can sample these great 70's sounds and combine the wonderful early synthesiser sounds with the precision, reliability, automation, and flexibility of modern DAW's!

See the other 3 parts for an in-depth demonstration."

"The ETI 4600 synthesiser was designed by Trevor Marshall back in the early 1970s, featured in the magazine Electronics Today International and this particular synth was built over a 2 year period from parts sold by Maplin Electronic Supplies, and completed by the current owner in 1976 at the age of 16. The synthesiser has remained in the possession of the builder – until now - where it is being offered for sale. This is the actual UK version synthesiser shown of the home page of the www.eti4600synthesiser.org.uk website.

Being a purist, there has never been a temptation to ‘improve’ or modify the unit. There are just 2 variations from the original design – both of which were implemented at the time of the build. These are:

(1) One of the VCFs (Voltage Controlled Filters) was installed from the ETI 3600 design (which provided a variable ‘Q’ factor) giving the synth a more ‘commercial’ sound.

It was suggested by ETI at the time that for versatility, the ETI 3600 filter could be fitted to the 4600. So I stress that this variation to the original design was conducted at the time of the build in 1976.

(2) The second variation was that the keyboard contacts (that were originally bent gold plated wires) were replaced for ‘organ’ switches (again, contemporary with the period). This was due to the rather hit and miss operation.

Note that the later keyboard controller modification has not been implemented on this unit.

The synthesiser is in full working order, and great cosmetic condition considering it is more than 36 years old! The photos (which have been taken in June 2012) show the true condition. The case (teak veneer) has a few minor chips and scratches but is generally excellent.

Please visit the ETI4600 website to view a more comprehensive range of photographs. All are ‘clickable’ to show very high resolution images that will allow you to examine every square millimetre of it!

The front panel is also in great condition with just a very small amount of paint having been scuffed (as can be seen in the photo above the patchboard).

On the rear of the synthesiser is the interface panel. There is an additional hole drilled in this where there was an intention to add additional connections to the oscillator inputs. These weren’t implemented, and the hole has been blanked off (as can be seen from the photograph).

The synthesiser is being sold with the following:
Mains lead (with original 3-pin connector). This probably doesn’t comply with the latest standards (!) but it is the original.
Original construction book (in pretty shabby condition with soldering iron burn holes), but again, it is the original!
23 (original) patch pins comprising: 5 x Red, 5 x Black, 5 x Green, 4 x White, 2 x Blue, 2 x Yellow

There were 2 options of spring reverberation unit available for the ETI4600 – a short and a long. This synthesiser has the long version giving a longer reverberation time.

Because this synth is such a rarity, it is being offered with worldwide shipping so it can be delivered anywhere in the world to a dedicated purchaser. See at the bottom of the listing for details of delivery options."
