Oberheim TVS-1 Two Voice Vintage and Rare Triangle Modification Board

via this auction

"Oberheim Two Voice Triangle Mod Aftermarket vintage modification Adds triangle wave for LFO

Up for auction is an extremely rare Oberheim Two Voice Triangle Modification! This unit came from our fully working Oberheim Two Voice Synthesizer! The only parts that need to be replaced are the two blue switches (roughly fifty cents a piece). The user needs to install Molex pin connectors onto the cables themselves. While the wires on this mod fit our Two Voice, the user might want to change the lengths and solder their own wires to better fit their Two Voice! I unfortunately do not have a wiring diagram. This mod was tested and works however it must be sold as is and with no returns accepted due to the fact that the user must install the modification themselves.

A bit about the studio from which this comes from ...
Asphodel Records/Studios and Recombinant Media Labs was San Francisco's cutting edge and award winning production, recording, and performance/research facility. We worked both with artists internal and external to the record label. Some of the clientele has included Academy and Grammy Award nominated M.I.A., members of Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, Kode 9, Speedy J, Blixa Bargeld, and many many others. The facility was home to many talented professionals who were the users of the equipment we are selling."

Uber Rare SMS Analog Modular Synth Sequencer & Voltage Memory Unit

via this auction

[don't miss the Asphodel and Recombinant Media Labs video below]

"SMS Modular 252 Sequencer//Program Memory Programmable Control Voltage Sequencer and Memory System Beyond Rare

Up for auction is a non functioning Salamander Modular synthesizer 252 sequencer and control voltage memorizer! For those in the know, SMS modules are beyond rare as very few systems were built in the late 70's/early 80's due to the overbuilt and expensive nature of SMS modules!

This 252 sequencer/memory unit is in non working condition. It was part of one of the larges SMS systems put together in San Francisco in the early 1980's. From what I've been told this sequencer developed some problems and was pulled from the main modular frame only to never be repaired. I do not at this time have the means to fully test out what exactly is wrong with it and would love to pass on this gem to someone who is interested in devoting some serious service time to get it going. I believe all parts are present on the unit itself except for four 1/8 audio connectors at the very top of the module. These are available almost anywhere for thirty cents to a dollar! Once working though, the SMS operated on standard One Volt Per Octave configuration and as such this unit can be used with a vast assortment of modular synthesizers. I can cycle through 16 different memory locations via an advance and reset inputs. This means it can be used as a programmable voltage sequencer clocked by a standard +5 volt trigger pulse. See the video below for more information regarding where this system comes from. The big black modular is the SMS.

At least, that's what we think is the serial number. It's marked on board three (internally) as such. The circuit board also reads "11/71" as the manufacture date."

Daphne Oram documentary - Wee Have Also Sound-Houses

YouTube Uploaded by straypixel on Jan 6, 2012

"To mark the 50th anniversary in 2008 of the creation of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the programme examines the life and legacy of one of the great pioneers of British electronic music - the Workshop's co-founder Daphne Oram.

As a child in the 1930s, Oram dreamed of a way to turn drawn shapes into sound, and she dedicated her life to realising that goal. Her Oramics machine anticipated the synthesiser by more than a decade, and with it she produced a number of internationally-performed works for the cinema, concert hall and theatre.

Daphne Oram was among the very first composers of electronic music in Britain and her legacy is the dominance of that soundworld in our culture today.

Early BBC radiophonics: Private Dreams and Public Nightmares (1957)

YouTube Uploaded by straypixel on Jan 8, 2012

"An early BBC experiment in radiophonic sound, predating the establishment of the Radiophonic Workshop, created by Frederick Bradnum and Daphne Oram (pictured) and produced by Donald McWhinnie.
TX BBC Third Programme, 07/10/1957.

McWhinnie's spoken introduction (the work starts at 4:20):

"This programme is an experiment. An exploration. It's been put together with enormous enthusiasm and equipment designed for other purposes. The basis of it is an unlimited supply of magnetic tape, recording machine, razor blade, and some thing to stick the bits together with. And a group of technicians who think that nothing is too much trouble - provided that it works.

"You take a sound. Any sound. Record it and then change its nature by a multiplicity of operations. Record it at different speeds. Play it backwards. Add it to itself over and over again. You adjust filters, echos, acoustic qualities. You combine segments of magnetic tape. By these means and many others you can create sounds which no one has ever heard before. Sounds which have indefinable and unique qualities of their own. A vast and subtle symphony can be composed from the noise of a pin dropping. In fact one of the most vibrant and elemental sounding noises in tonight's programme started life as an extremely tinny cowbell.

"It's a sort of modern magic. Many of you may be familiar with it. They've been exploiting it on the continent for years. But strangely enough we've held aloof. Partly from distrust. Is it simply a new toy? Partly through complacency. Ignorance too. We're saying at last that we think there's some thing in it. But we aren't calling it 'musique concrète'. In fact we've decided not to use the word music at all. Some musicians believe that it can become an art form itself. Others are sceptical. That's not our immediate concern. We're interested in its application to radio writing - dramatic or poetic - adding a new dimension. A form that is essentially radio.

'Properly used, radiophonic effects have no relationship with any existing sound. They're free of irrelevent associations. They have an emotional life of their own. And they could be a new and invaluable strand in the texture of radio and theatre and cinema and television.'"

VSTs, Ableton & More Coming to the iPad?

Well, maybe, sort of... Apparently OnLive is bringing Windows to the iPad. If you aren't familiar with OnLive, they are an online streaming company that currently focuses on the gaming market. Basically they run the apps on their servers and you can then run the apps on virtually any system via their client app. Their app is currently available on Android and is coming for the iPad. Windows 7 desktop is coming, and the best part is it will be free. The question is will you be able to purchase and install your own apps on it?

Via MacRumors via GigaOm:

"Since applications are running on high-end computing clusters in OnLive’s data centers, the only thing holding back performance is the network. Which means that in today’s world of pervasive broadband connectivity, Windows applications running on an iPad could potentially be faster than those running on a standard Windows 7 laptop.

OnLive is making the Desktop app available in a freemium model through which users will get 2GB worth of cloud storage and the ability to use Windows 7 applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as other utilities and games. Documents can be stored in the cloud and accessed from any device with a web interface. In the near future, OnLive expects to launch Onlive Desktop Pro, a more robust service that will offer up 50 GB of storage, priority access, additional apps and other features for $9.99 a month. It also promises collaboration features for enterprise users such as sharing documents or working on virtual whiteboards."

Introducing the Synth Core B DIY Platform

via tolaemon where you'll find full details.

"Synth Core B is a simplified and improved revision of 'Synth Core A' the development platform I designed two years ago to create custom audio synths and music controllers. The aim of the platform is to provide all the basic resources to allow synths or controllers designers ( with C knowledge and some skills in electronics ) focusing on the application development, and relieve them from the more tedious low level design tasks. I made that revision to simplify the hardware of "Synth Core A", because it included some elements that raised the complexity and cost of the board and where not necessary at all ( in case they are, they can be connected and used through some of the I/O ports ).

So "Synth Core B" platform is a combination of hardware and software designed to develop music devices like controllers or synths and also to manage other more specialized audio devices ( DCOs, programmable audio ICs, hardware codecs ... ) , something like a generic development board focused to synths applications."

"Voice Synth is a specialized synthesizer for creative voice sculpting
✭✭✭ Introduction offer: 50% off ✭✭✭

✭✭✭ Ideal tool for creative voice expression ✭✭✭
Voice Synth is much more than your average voice changer app. Create and design your own incredible voices that live, breathe and evolve in real-time as you play. Sound like famous pop artists, "deep" movie voices ("Soon… in this theatre"), a close harmony choir, a robot, a church organ, a baby, lion, guitar, old telephone or anything else you can create. Sing in the mic and become a true artist by tweaking the controls of the vocoder, sampler, pitch and formant shifter, automatic tuning and harmony arranger, distortion, delay, stereo chorus and reverb.

✭✭✭ Voice Synth is a smart instrument ✭✭✭
We spent more than a year designing easy controls optimized for voice sculpting. So you don't have to deal with the technical complexity of conventional vocoders or synthesizers:

✔ Intuitive voice design: you can tweak every aspect of your voice separately. No experience required, your ears will guide you
✔ Intuitive interface: no scrolling through menus, all voice controls and display information are always available
✔ One app, two interfaces: a dedicated interface designed for iPad and a compact interface for iPhone and iPod without any loss of features so you can create anywhere you go.

After cleaning off this mess I made some room dividers and covered the inside in foam and velvet. I think it looks pretty neat...

The music is from 2006 and is something I botched together myself. The idea came some ten years earlier. But for some reason it took untill 2006 before I actually recorded it. I played it on the Yamaha HE-8 organ and Roland JX-8P synthesizer. The rhythm comes from my Roland CR-68 drum machine."
