Sonica Frank Evantoff # 477 of 650

via this auction
"extremely rare electronic synthesizer instrument by Frank Evantoff called the Sonica. Look at the marks from the carving tools the craftsman used to make the instrument. They neatly hold the battery! Only 650 of these strange instruments were made since their they began manufacturing them in 1979. Shaped like small lute with a guitar like neck and speaker inside that was the voice for the Serge designed oscillator inside ( Look for Serge's name on the hand printed circuit board! ). They player could sound notes by touching the frets on the neck that produce at between sitar and violin. It has very minor dings (see photos). Comes with case and original user manual/warranty certificate.

After Mattel had used the concept for the "Magical Music Thing," Frank Evantoff developed a more precise keyboard and incorporated it into this new instrument, which he called The Sonica. In 1979, the first Sonicas were produced, a collaboration with Larry Heller. There were 650 eventually built, but very few are seen nowadays. Serge Tcherepnin of Serge synthesizers (analog modular) did the oscillator design, and the oscillator inside the Sonica is indeed a Serge oscillator! The bodies have an interesting gourd/phallic shape, and were carved wood. The neck is incredibly comfortable, and easily fits into the hand, facilitating the sliding action used for playing the Sonica.

The sound of the Sonica can best be described as somewhere between a sitar and violin. When run through a simple delay, an amazing array of soundscapes are derived. The front panel features a Key/Pitch Knob, and an On/Off Volume Knob. It boasts 15 keys with additional half step notes. It also features three buttons. Analog “Slider,” which is a tremolo type effect, Analog “Tone,” which is actually a tonal boost, and “Half-Step,” which raises the note an octave. It features a built-in speaker, with an 1/8 inch output to connect to an amplifier or recording device. It runs on one 9-volt battery which is installed by accessing a plate on the backside of the device. The Sonica really shines when sent through a tube amplifier, producing a crystalline sound unlike anything I’ve heard before."

NAMM: New Corsynth C102 VC LFO

"Corsynth is proud to introduce a new module, the C102 VC LFO, voltage controlled low frequency oscillator with five waveforms available simultaneously.

With three frequency ranges ( L, M, H ) the VC LFO can oscillate from one cycle every 7 minutes up to 1KHz. Thanks to this wide frequency range the LFO can be used to produce really slow and subtle modulations to audio frequency modulation (FM sounds).

Another important feature is that the oscillation frequency can be voltage controlled using the FM input. You can modulate the frequency with an envelope, other LFO , sequencer etc. Using the FM input, it’s also possible to get extra waveforms like hyperbolic sine wave, hyperbolic cosine wave and more.. Just connect one of the VC-LFO outputs to its FM input and turn up the FM level potentiometer.

The module will be available in February but all pre-orders made before the official release will have a 10% discount."

Introducing Arturia MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer

Uploaded by Arturiaweb on Jan 17, 2012

"MiniBrute is Arturia's new analog synthesizer. With a pure analog signal path and innovative new features it sets a new standard for what a hardware synthesizer should be. The pure analog, multi-wave oscillator combined with a huge sounding classic multi-mode filter, and wide range of modulation capabilities will bring new life into your recordings and stage performances. Add to that outstanding features like the Ultrasaw, Metalizer, Arpeggiator, LFO with sample & hold, full USB/MIDI/CV connectivity; all of which are housed in a rugged metal enclosure and it is almost too brutal to think about!"

Uploaded by proaudiostar on Jan 18, 2012

"We check in with Passion Pit while working on their new album to see what they think of Arturia's brand new all analog synth. Arturia lent us a demo and once we showed it to the guys with Passion Pit we knew we werent getting it back. They liked it so much they had to put it on some of the songs they were doing and even re-recorded some bass parts with it. With is robust sound and ease of use this keyboard will no doubt be a must have!"

Oberheim OB-Xa Synthesizer Used by Rush?

via this auction

"Up for auction is an Oberheim OB-Xa Synthesizer with an interesting history with the band RUSH. The unit powers up, makes noises, but just not the proper ones! It will definitley need servicing. It does have the JL Cooper MIDI modification as well as the 120 Program mod. Cosmetically it is in good condition with some scratches and marking as shown in the pictures...  *The unit was used as a last minute backup by Geddy Lee at a RUSH concert in Denver in the early 80's. The thought of Tom Sawyer played on it by the man himself is overwhelming!"

accompaying a song with the omnichord by folktek

"The omnichord is a strange instrument, which was first released in 1981 by Suzuki. it is based on chords and easy to play. Every chord owns a chord bottom to press. FOLKTEK modified the omnichord, so it became an instrument, which is vey interesting to play because of it´s special fragile and not really predictible sounding. In the video you can hear the modified version, combined with the ALESIS PHILTRE and a DELAY, accompanying the voice of a singer."

"short part from our last song-improvisation, which we did during snow was falling. "songs on the fly" is a duo project, which means spontaneously songwriting. when we start playing, just the lyrics are prepared. the whole music happens in the middle of the moment and is recorded directly on dat-tape. in this case i used the omnichord by folktek, a modified instrument with a fragile and touching sound."

"SÃ¥ synger vi en sang" - on Elka X-1000

YouTube Uploaded by organfairy on Jan 17, 2012

"This song might have a German or English title. But I know it only in Danish where it was a less-than-noticed single from the Danish duo Jan & Keld in the late 1970's.
Jan & Kjeld did have their fame. But that was back in the late 1950's where they were succesfull as two banjo playing kids.

I have heard the song many times because it was in the beginning of one of the tapes my mother had recorded from the radio and which where later handed down to me. So it reminds me of the late 1970's.

Therefore I have put together this littlle nostalgic montage and I promise to get back on the usual track next week!"

Serge Style Milton 16x4 analog modular sequencer

via this auction
"This is a Serge/Milton 16x4 analog sequencer, in a 19" rack unit with Serge-standard banana jacks. It is in amazing condition and is one of only 45 units manufactured. Fully working and has been in use in my studio by myself and other musicians for the past three years. It was purchased new.

If you're not familiar with what an analog sequencer for a modular synthesizer does, I would ask that you not bid on this item. It's a fantastically powerful sequencer, the best I've ever used (only selling due to studio changes) but that means nothing to you if you don't have other gear to use it with. It will not make its own sound, it just outputs dozens of control signals so that you can control the rest of your modular synth. That being said...

You can clock this with standard triggers for clock advance/reset like any other sequencer, or you can send it a CV input (ramp for normal operation, sawtooth for reverse, triangle for pendulum, S&H for random steps) to control it via an external oscillator.

It outputs a gate signal for each step (1-16) above the knob banks, and below the knob banks there are switches for the two programmable pulse banks (A/B.) Each step can send a pulse to either A, B, or neither.

Each row has the customary CV and Gate outputs to control the oscillators, filters, envelopes, waveshapers, or even other analog sequencers. You have a modular synth if you're looking at this (I hope) so you know that you can send any of the 26 outputs of this sequencer to nearly anything in your modular system.

There is also a "kybd" control built in to allow you to step through the sequence via a Serge TKB. If you have a TKB, you know how this works."
