etasonix TM-3 Gas-Tube Dual Voltage-Controled Oscillator

via this auction
"(taken from Modular Square)
The METASONIX TM-3 is the only voltage-controlled oscillator on the market with an all-tube signal path. It consists of two thyratron tube sawtooth oscillators, which are wired in parallel but may be offset with their individual front-panel tuning controls. Furthermore, soft sync is available, to force oscillator 2 to track with oscillator 1.The waveform produced by the 2D21/5727 thyratrons is unique and distinctive--a very imperfect sawtooth. It's the kind of sound that screams VINTAGE, because the only other instruments that produce it are vintage ones--the Mixtur-Trautonium, the Univox, and some 1950s electronic organs. Furthermore, there is a suboctave circuit, which adds a square wave one octave below oscillator 2. It includes short pulses an octave above, for a distinctive sound. And you can mess with the STABILITY control to get unique effects--because the suboctave divider is made of two neon lamps, and NOT a transistor flip-flop. Except for the CV driver, the TM-3 is all tubes. And unlike most other synthesizer VCOs, the TM-3 is so sensitive that it is easily used for FM sound effects--simply by driving either CV input with a line-level audio signal. Both inputs are DC coupled and highly sensitive. The result is a unique and very extreme form of signal distortion. The TM-3 is a Hz/V VCO, meaning it follows a linear characteristic. Each successive octave requires doubling the control voltage. As shipped, the first octave is swept from 0 volts to 0.25 volts, the next from 0.25 to 0.75 volts, etc. Although not standard to the present modular-synth industry, this scheme simplifies the TM-3's use as a signal processor and avoids the use of an exponential converter circuit, which can drift with temperature or cause other problems. TM-3's CV control is compatible with vintage Korg MS series and Yamaha CS series synthesizers.
tech specs
Output signal max approx 10 v p-p. Capable of approximately three octave range with CV control, 66 Hz to 526 Hz. Center pitch setting with tuning knobs and 0.0v input gives approx. low C (66 Hz). Actual range obtained depends upon individual thyratron tubes installed--about 2 1/2 octaves is typical. May be controlled from any MIDI-CV converter having Hz/V capability, including the Synhouse MIDIJACK II, Philip Rees Little MCV, Kenton Pro-Solo and Pro-2000, and Encore Expressionist. Inputs: two 1/4"" phone jacks for CV or audio (they mix linearly). Output: 1/4"" phone jack, audio, mono, 50k ohm impedance. Power input 10v AC to 12v AC, 50/60 Hz, 1 amp max at idle"

Stylophone MIDI Conversion (with tilt sensor)

YouTube Uploaded by hotchk155 on Jan 24, 2012

"This is a MIDI conversion of the "reissue" stylophone. The stylophone still works and plays as normal, but it also sends MIDI... in the case is an Arduino Nano board, KXPS5 accelerometer chip, and three 74hc165 shift registers to scan the Stylophone keypad. A row of 4 tactile switches on the back is used to control it. The accelerometer sends pitch bend and mod wheel messages.

Ethero 2 first demo

YouTube Uploaded by glidepro1984 on Jan 24, 2012

"A demo of the second version of Ethero.

The app is very much in development at the moment, however it's already pretty usable!

Ethero experiments with using a light source to control sound. Whereas the first version used light to modify the pitch of a wobbly sine wave (damn it was fun!), the new version will transmit that pitch as a MIDI message to any equipment that's lucky enough to be listening!

The video shows my old (but reliable) iPhone 3GS face down on the table with its camera facing up - this is the device that runs the app. The iPad is running Moog Animoog and the iPod Touch 4G is running Tempo Rubato's NLog Midi Synth. Ethero 2 is controlling both apps via MIDI over Wifi.

As my hand gets closer to covering up the 3GS camera lens, the pitch of the notes is lowered, and vice versa. The pitches are constrained to a major scale, however I'm planning to add a few more in due course!

The interface of the app is pretty minimal at the moment (nothing to show really) - however as the app is supposed to be used with the screen face down, the UI seems secondary to getting the camera stuff 'just so'

Even though I'm the developer, I can't wait to see where this goes!"

BUGBRAND BOARDWEEVIL

via this auction
"BugBrand BoardWeevil. A portable, battery powered synth/noise machine unlike anything else.. Control is through dials, light sensors and touch-pads which allow for live circuit re-routing. This thing is capable of a massive range of crazy noises from clicky hi frequency electronica down to gut churning basses.

These things are handmade in small batches and tend not to be repeated - this version sold out over a year ago..

Manufacturers spec below:
Within the BoardWeevil are three oscillators and two (quasi)ringmods. Like previous Weevils, each oscillator has a wide-ranging Pitch Dial plus a Range Switch for selection of low-freq clickety or audio-rate drone tones.
Oscs 2 & 3 can be Syncronized to Osc1 with individual switches. The effect is most audible at audio rates where you get wonderful harmonic tones - Osc1 sets the base pitch and then the rates of Osc2 / 3 set the harmonic overtones.
Osc1 also has an LDR Light Sensor that can be switched in to affect the pitch - the more light falls on the sensor, the faster things run.
Osc1 and Osc2 are combined through the first ringmod (RM1) and then the output of this is combined with Osc3 in RM2. The Balance control is used to crossfade between the two ringmod sections.
Bend Features - it is these extras that bring the Weevil to life! Turning the Starve Dial strangles the power supply to the Osc/RM section sending things into areas where the oscillators fight between each other in chaotic ways. In a similar setup to Osc1, there is another switchable light sensor to control the power starvation.
The Stable/Instable mode switch provides some smoothing to operation - in Stable mode the Starvation appears something like an overall pitch-range-shift, while the Instable mode results in far great levels of cross-modulationary-fighting.
Fourteen Body Contact points hook you straight into the circuit - touching of different combinations allows signals to flow in unexpected manners. This becomes an extremely reactive and interesting means of control.
Output Section - a simple treble-cut Tone Control provides some signal shaping before the final Output Level master volume control.
1/4" Jack // Mini-Amp - the Weevil output is on a standard 1/4" mono jack socket or, if no plug is inserted, the sound passes to a mini amp and speaker for go-anywhere oscillation noises."
