Barber: Adagio for Strings (synthesized)

YouTube Uploaded by ScrollingMusic on Feb 13, 2012

"Samuel Barber (1910-1981): Adagio for Strings

This is Barber's 1936 arrangement of the second movement of his own String Quartet, Op. 11. Barber transcribed this work once again in 1967 as an eight-part choral setting of the Agnus Dei. This piece is one of the most recognizable in classical music, having been featured in many TV shows and films. In 2004, listeners of the BBC's Today program voted this piece the "saddest classical" work ever.

This piece is made up of 10 basic phrases, with the climax residing in the fifth phrase, around 5:30 into the piece. Each phrase begins with a single pitch held by a string section (except the phrase immediately after the climax), followed by a resounding chord by the full string orchestra. In the aftermath of the long fifth statement and climax, the orchestra breaks off into short, almost incomplete thoughts. The overall tonality of the piece suggests is B-flat minor; the piece ends on a beautiful lingering unresolved V chord (F major). The melodic line is surprisingly simple and diatonically stepwise.

The awesome new sound featured in this video, developed by Drew Weymouth, is derived from filtering out a fundamental and several harmonics for each note from pure white noise (as opposed to additive synthesis of periodic waveforms). This process is computationally intensive, requiring very steep, narrow bandpass filters with passband widths of a few hertz or less to achieve a pitched sound. An FIR (finite impulse response) implementation requires several thousand filter coefficients for an appropriate rejection of undesired frequencies. Because the waveform generation is intrinsically random, the resulting output has a full, lifelike, and ethereal sound that dynamically changes even as a single pitch is sustained. The result is a powerful commanding sound reminiscent of church organ pipes mixed with low brass, strings, and light vocals."

Those four sounds, as well as four additional percussion sounds, can also be triggered by the blue momentary switches. A toggle switch sets whether the drum triggers once, or at the rate of the sequencer.

Minimoog Model D SN 4831

via this auction
via the listing: "The instruments under Serial 6000 have the reputation of being the BEST. Enthusiasts talk about them in, almost, mystical terms, they have a characteristic sound, due to the positioning and components choosen by specific design, of the original boards, allowing a cross talk between circuits that was lost after the 6000 Series The most Vibrant Filters Stimulate Remarkable Bass. The boards made by the original contractors handpicked and approved by Bob Moog. There's a reason why I owned Minimoog 4831 for over 30 years. It is simply the best sounding instrument I've ever had and I've owned racks of them. Play the pitch wheel against real time filter alterations. You'll keep playing this box for the next 30 years. via this auction where you'll find additional pics while up.

via the listing: "vintage Moog Sonic Six monophonic analog synthesizer. This synth is fully functional and in excellent shape, the inside in near mint cosmetic condition. Looks really nice. It includes the original manuals as well. This is a rare synth and has the earlier Arp filter. It sounds great, a unique synth that you don't see around too often but definitely worth hearing. Interesting XY mod features, gritty analog sound, with the crazy resonance on the Arp filter. The keyboard is a bit quirky being stuck inside a case like that, you can't play it too hard or you'll jam the keys, but with a lighter touch you'll be fine, they all trigger great as they should. See pictures below for more details. Don't miss out!"

"Here's a little demo of my old Wasp Special vintage mono synth from the 1980's. I'm trying to use all of the knobs to show they are fully functioning. This is a rare model of Wasp with a real wood case. It is serial number 00015 which suggests it was one of the first built. I'm using a modified Epiphone Valve Junior amp to play it through. The sound is being picked up by the built in mic on the Vado camera I'm filming with so the sound reproduction isn't great. I hope you find the video useful. I will be parting company with the Wasp soon."

Repaired and modded synth jam

YouTube Uploaded by ChrisLody on Feb 13, 2012

This is a little synth jam that i've been planning for a while. All of the synths and effects in this video have been repaired by me over the last few years. Here's what i used:

Korg Poly 800 (far left)

I bought this from a cash generator for £30 and found it had a scrambled memory, missing joystick and a dead oscillator. A previous owner had modded the battery compartment to take a pp3 instead of the usual 6 D cells. I replaced the battery and fitted a knob to the joystick to make it usable. It was years later that my electronic skill were good enough to track the dead oscillator down to a faulty op-amp. With the help of the forum below i was able to replace it and get it up and running.

http://music-electronics-forum.com/t24095/

While i had the thing i bit i decided to add the 'Moog Slayer' and 'Filter FM' mods to it which make it much more fun :D

K!-LABO

"K!-LABO
A collaborative table for work and play.

K!-LABO is a collaborative project created together with WWAA architecture / design
studio and exhibited at Kordegarda galery. WWAA designed the table with
co-working in mind, creating an object which, by it's modular form and lots of edges, allows comfortable work of a whole team.

We elaborated on a concept of collaborative qualities provided by the table and augmented it with sound and visuals. Each of the table edges is treated as kind of a virtual string, movements of which are controlled by the people wandering around. Movement is interpreted both visually and musically, transforming the table into a form of a audiovisual collaborative instrument.

Theme for a damp forest (vvvv edition)

YouTube Uploaded by DevsoundSE on Feb 12, 2012

"Showing some of the possibilities of VVVV + Buzz for making generative music and art.

(The vvvv-patch is super-messy, I know... I was just testing some of the svg-functionality in vvvv.)

So, what's going on?
Well, first an svg-image is generated in vvvv. That's the black and red shape.
Then we extract the node data from the svg and pass it on to a bunch of dots that are beeing rendered in the four windows. MIDIdata is then generated in 8 channels by taking some random rms-values of the node data. For good measure, an FFT-node is placed in vvvv to recieve the music from buzz to manipulate the parameters of the svg-shape. This in turn translates down to the dot-renderers, and will modify the midi-data sent to Buzz. It's called feedback, you dummy.

Any questions?"

"Union Silver" - on Roland D-20

YouTube Uploaded by organfairy on Feb 13, 2012

"It has been a while since I used this instrument. Therefore I made this video using only voices and rhythms from the Roland D-20. I didn't use the sequencer though but instead recorded everything in multitrack on a PC.

I have read somewhere that the original version of this song was Italian. But the most well known version is probably the English one by Middle of the Road called "Union Silver". But there was also a Swedish version - En sång om sorg och glädje - recorded by Agnetha Fältskog before ABBA really took off."
