I Dream of Wires Announces New Film on Early Days of Synthesis

The I Dream of Wires Team has launched round three of their IndieGoGo campaign. Included in the new campaign are details on a follow-up documentary:

"Right from the start of this project, one of the questions hanging over us has been: 'How are we going to condense all of this amazing footage, these interviews, this subject matter, into a 90 to 120-minute documentary?'

Early on, we made a decision to focus the film, not on the history of modular synthesizers, but on the current resurgence of modular synthesizers. At the same time, we knew that by doing so we would not be able to take full advantage of some of the interviews and footage that we had already filmed; we felt strongly that our interviews with seminal early modular musicians and synthesists like Morton Subotnick, Bernie Krause, Bill Maginnis and Ramon Sender should not be reduced to mere establishing soundbites. Not only that - we are also wildly enthusiastic about both the history, *and* the resurgence of modular synthesizers!

So ultimately, what we have decided to do is to make two films: First, all of our efforts will be directed towards completing 'I Dream of Wires,' which will focus strictly on the resurgence of modular synthesizers. Following the completion of 'I Dream of Wires,' we will begin work on a follow up film, title TBA, about the early days of analog synthesizers, focusing on pioneering designers, manufacturers and musicians, including Robert Moog, Don Buchla, Raymond Scott, Hugh LeCaine, Wendy Carlos, and Morton Subotnick, right through to the rock, pop, disco and new wave musicians that made these instruments famous throughout the '70s and early-'80s.

Regarding 'I Dream of Wires': we are aiming to conclude filming before summer 2012, with a fall/winter 2012 ETA for the completed film.

Regarding the follow-up, historical documentary: we are already well on our way with this film, as so many of the interviews we have filmed seem tailor-made for a film like this. After the completion of 'I Dream of Wires,' we will dive right into the follow up, initially seeking out additional people to interview on the subject, complementing the footage that we already have amassed. It's still early days, but at this time we are going to estimate a fall/winter 2013 ETA for the completion of this follow up film."

"Traditionally made in a standard depressing military-type green color, this one is a gorgeous egg-shell or pearl white. It is hard to appreciate from a picture how beautiful this instrument really is... If you are looking up this auction, it means you know about this baby, but let me remind you anyway: it has 3 VCO's, an LFO, a mixer, a RM, a dual multi-mode filter, 2 EG's and a dual VCA. It is normalled in the traditional vco-vcf-vca fashion, but has patch points which can override the internal wiring, for true modular configuration. Comes with manual and original box. It runs for $3599 new"

It was Doepfer's attempt to offer a fairly cheap alternative to the popular Soundblasters, LAPC's and other cheap GM-compatible modules like the Roland SC-7.

The synth-funk unit Midnight Star scored several times on the charts during the mid-'80s, led by their double-platinum album No Parking on the Dance Floor in 1983. Just one of the successful acts on Solar Records (also including Shalamar, Lakeside, and the Whispers), the group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by the Calloway brothers, trumpeter Reginald, and trombone player Vincent, with vocalist Belinda Lipscomb. After signing with RCA near the turn of the decade, Midnight Star recorded their first album in 1980, The Beginning, with a conglomeration of studio players and producers. After moving to the Solar label by 1982, the group released Victory and then added a full band: guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, drummer Bobby Lovelace, and keyboard player Bo Watson.

Though the Calloways' production skills -- later used to full effect on tracks by Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, and Teddy Pendergrass -- had pushed Midnight Star into the R&B charts during 1981-1982, with singles like "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You," the group was unprepared for the success of the first single from their third proper album, No Parking on the Dance Floor. "Freak-a-Zoid" hit number two on the R&B charts in mid-1983, and though it failed to make the pop Top 40, it pushed the LP over the platinum mark. "Operator," the first single from their next album, Planetary Invasion, became their highest-charting single, making number 18 on the pop charts. By 1986, Headlines had become Midnight Star's third album to at least sell gold, but it proved their last; both Reginald and Vincent left the group to form Calloway in 1988. (Incidentally, the Calloways had introduced future legend Babyface to Solar executives for his first job, and produced Babyface's group the Deele).

Without Reginald and Vincent Calloway to lead the way, Midnight Star fell fast and far. A 1988 self-titled album flopped, and 1990's Work It Out proved to be their last until 2002's 15th Avenue. Since then, the members continued outside collaborations, but they also came together for frequent touring. As late as 2007, the group's lineup featured Lipscomb, Gentry, Watson, Lovelace, and Gant. As Calloway, the Calloways found success with their first single, 1989's "I Wanna Be Rich," which hit number two on the pop charts. The track was their only major hit, followed by "Sir Lancelot" and the title track from their 1990 debut album, All the Way. Calloway returned two years later with Let's Get Smooth, but the album proved their last. The brothers continued working, with Pieces of a Dream and Bootsy Collins, among others."

I Dream of Wires, Extended Interview Series: Allen Ravenstine and Robert Wheeler of Pere Ubu

Vimeo by I Dream Of Wires

"In February 2012, Pere Ubu synthesists Allen Ravenstine ('75 to '89) and Robert Wheeler ('94 to present), two legendary figures of Cleveland's punk rock scene, met at Grant Avenue Studio to discuss and demonstrate the EML modular synthesizers that have been an integral part of the Pere Ubu sound for almost 40 years. The interviews were conducted for inclusion in "I Dream of Wires: the Modular Synthesizer Documentary." The impromptu jam session that followed marked the first time the two have ever played together.

I DREAM OF WIRES is a forthcoming documentary film about the history and resurgence of modular synthesizers. The film is currently in production. This is the 2nd in a series of extended interviews, which will be produced and released in various formats throughout the production, and following the release, of the film. I DREAM OF WIRES extended interview segments are sponsored by MATRIXSYNTH (m.matrixsynth.com).

Note: An extended, 23-minute cut of this piece is available to watch on YouTube, with additional performance footage and further discussions on the early days of Pere Ubu. A must for Pere Ubu fans!

The instrument's somewhat unpredictable nature is mitigated somewhat by performance controls: Rotating dials and blue touchpads shape and add elements to the sound, from theremin-like whines to shuffling beats. Imagine this magnificent contraption providing live accompaniment to a silent science-fi film screening."

"This is my latest (and greatest) invention. It is a very sophisticated MIDI controller, allowing the player to articulate many parts of the sound - filters, envelopes.effects etc simultaneously using your left hand and feet. The right hand plays a keyboard with my patented 'Vibe Bar' for imparting vibrato & pitch bend.
I think it's going to be the future of the synthesiser controller!

It consists of 36 wheels and 2 joysticks.......with a pedalboard - 2 peddles and 4 switches..very playable, very cool.
The MIDI circuit is Livid Instruments MIDI Brain.

I like to think of a synthesiser more like an acoustic instrument - rather than an instrument containing 1000 different sounds, you have 1 sound with 1000 articulate-able variations.

What do you think?????........."

CV Scribbler plays splats

"CV Scribbler translates drawn 'splats' into control voltages which when fed out through a USB digital to analog converter (DAC) can drive a modular voltage controlled synthesizer. In this case a Cylonix Cyclebox (v2) VCO through a QMMG and out through the effects rack. The first CV (x axis on screen) controls pitch of the VCO (and wavetable position and wavefolding) whilst the second CV (each new dot triggers a gate) triggers an envelope generator (Maths) controlling the VCA and VCF."

"The genoQs Machines "Octopus" is a MIDI sequencer - to be precise, the sequencer that has redefined its kind.

While sequencers are machines to control synthesizers, Octopus stands out for a broad user base as a musical instrument. The merit lies in the directness, intuitiveness and creativity that gets unleashed by interacting with Octopus.

User experience and musical creation are the centerpieces of the Octopus design: a no-compromise machine built from metal, wood, and modern real-time software technology. The thorougly structured user interface, its stunning looks, make each Octopus a unique piece to stand the test of time.

E-MU SYSTEMS DRUMULATOR PAD PROGRAMMER SN 314

via this auction
"The extremely rare E-MU Pad Programmer consists of four independent trigger sensors with appropriate circuitry, with a common housing and power supply. The power supply is a simple three terminal regulator +5V supply. The input voltage is between 8 and 25 VDC and the current requirements are small enough (around 40 mA when an LED is firing, less quiescently) that heat sinking is not required. The plug in wall unit supplies nominally 10V DC, which is filtered and regulated. The sensor is a piezo-electric crystal mounted in a housing designed to transmit pressure from a vertical strike by a drumstick, and attenuate vibrations conducted by the housing. This assembly is glued together and tested at the factory. Service on these assemblies will generally be by replacement, as repairs are difficult to accomplish and will frequently be unreliable. The sensor produces a substantial voltage spike (10 to 100+ volts), which is loaded by a parallel capacitor and resistor, and rectified by a full wave bridge. The resulting positive voltage is attenuated and applied to one terminal of a comparator. The other terminal of the comparator is adjusted for the desired sensitivity threshold. The trim range is set to stay within the common mode range of the comparator. Positive feedback around the comparator is provided to minimize marginal switching. The comparator output triggers a one-shot which will both swallow any comparator oscillation or multiple triggering, and provide sufficient pulse width for the LED amplifier and for the output trigger pulse. Both of these signals are buffered from the one-shot output.

Probably the most rare and sought after vintage E-MU piece out there, and the most hard to track down besides the E-MU modulator system. The EMU Drumulator Pad Programmer allows you to program the Drumulator (or other drum machines with standard CMOS 5V trigger inputs) in real time with ordinary drumsticks. I was able to trigger my Forat F-16 drum brain with no problems and have a blast, in addition to the Drumulator, so it's very versatile. You can also trigger an analog modular with this unit. If you're an E-MU collector this is not a unit you can pass up. It could be years before you find another one. There weren't too many of these units ever made, and if you can find one it is probably very beat up and not working. This unit is in very good condition. Also the original magazine ad for the Drumulator Pad Programmer is included. This unit was purchased from "Roger Dodger Music", a Minneapolis based keyboard/synthesizer dealer. This may be the only time to snag the E-MU Pad Programmer, as they never come up for sale. The last one came up in 2007on Ebay and didn't work. If you have been waiting for years for one of these units to become available, now here is your chance. Owned by non-smoker without kids and pets.

This auction is for the E-MU Pad Programmer only. Please see my other auctions for the mint Drumulator shown."

1973 Moog Satellite With an Interesting Bit of Synth History

YouTube Uploaded by richspe on Mar 6, 2012

via this auction

Read the description for an interesting bit of synth trivia involving this individual synth. The story starts at the second image below.

"I purchased this Moog new in 1973. It was occasionally used in a recording studio I owned. As you can see it shows little use. Also included are the user’s guide, service manual, and a tech bulletin with detailed tuning information. The user's registration guide is useful for basic settings for most musical instruments and a variety of other strange sounds. A year or two ago I tuned this Moog and cleaned all key contacts planning to sell it, which I didn’t move ahead with for some reason. It was working great. Now it works great some of the time and other times the tab settings don’t change the sound, as they should. Not sure what the problem is. It seems to be somewhat temperature related in that when the temperature is cooler it generally works fine. Perhaps a transistor needs replacing or something else. I am selling it as-is with no returns. The service manual has a full schematic, parts list, and picture views of the PC board. See the video I made 2/29/12 below, at which time it was working. This synthesizer has a great bass sound.

More than you wanted to know: It was used to produce the first radio/TV commercial for electronic money transfer, which became today’s ATMs. Yes, a Lincoln Nebraska savings and loan company started electronic money transfer. It was called TMS, transmatic money service. TMS service was at a special service counter in chain grocery stores. It was very rudimentary, sort of like going to a bank and requesting money from a saving account – no mag card or machine was involved.

The savings and the loan company that pioneered TMS knew that the banking industry would use legal means to shut down this service and that the courts would decide if TMS was legal. The banks claimed that the savings and loan company had not chartered a branch operation through the Banking Dept. of the State of Nebraska, which in their view was required for any money transaction. Not knowing which way the courts would rule the ad agency for the savings and loan company had me do a relatively low cost track rather than purchase a track from the jingle-jungle in Dallas Texas. ATMs are everywhere today so we know how the court ruled. At that time I think I was recoding with my Ampex 440, 4 track recorder (like the Beatles used early on), or an 8 track Ampex 350 deck with 440 electronics. Some of my synthesizer settings for the TMS commercial are written in the back of the user’s guide on blank registration pages. I know some say this is a wimpy synthesizer, but the fact remains that it has that great full Moog sound and it is a quick way to lay down a bass line, banjo track, or a track using any of the other great sounds it will create."

TOY #3 YAMAHA VSS-30 Sampling Keyboard (original, not circuit bent) HQ DEMO

"This little sampling keyboard has a lot to offer. It has 8-bit sampling and synthesizer functions. Samples can be looped with a variable loop point / lenght. Forwards / backwards or both possible. If you want, you can overdub the sample - there is no overdub limit - make your own mellotron choirs! ;-).
It has an ADSR envelope for volume like a synthesizer. LFO and TREMOLO speed is variable. FUZZ and ECHO effects. It has 12 different "arpeggio styles". The samples and the 12 synth sounds can be tweaked as well. It has a little sequencer, which records what you play.

The VSS-30 is the competitor of the famous Casio SK-1, but the VSS has more to offer and the sampling engine sounds better to my ears. Indeed, you can use it for recording, if you like great lofi sounds - which the VSS-30 can deliver. I like the sound, because it sounds less trashier than a Casio.
Also a great advantage is the absence of the "automatic power off" of the Casios. The VSS-30 remains powered on as long as you want.

This one is in original state - not circuit bent."
