The PPG 1003 "Sonic Carrier" - World's First Programmable Synth?

via Wolfgang Palm on Facebook
Be sure to see the video below.

"This was the first programmable synthesizer (1977)."

Programmable as in patch memory. The 1003 was a programmable monophonic synth with two oscillators, digitally controlled keyboard, and it was duophonic.

But was it the first?

Salamander Modular Synth Analog Voltage Controlled Filter

"Up for auction is a Salamander Modular Synthesizer single analogue voltage controlled filter module-UAF 227. It is in museum quality condition and functions and tunes perfectly. Everything electronically and physically is in perfect condition. It is one of few made in San Francisco, California in the late 70's/early 1980's.

This module includes one voltage controlled analogue filter that is generated from a CEM 3320 VCF IC, the same filter in a Prophet 5! The surrounding circuitry has been greatly expanded and the best possible parts were used in constructing the UAF VCF module by SMS. All of the knobs and switches are military grade (as in literally).

This module comes from the full SMS system that can be seen in the video below. I overtook the modular when I became the sound designer and producer for Asphodel Records/Recombinant Media Labs from Naut Humon. Nothing, and I mean nothing, sounds remotely close to what this module can do.

The bandwidth is so high that I used the SMS to modulate and generate video signals for several installations. From a tuning and musicality standpoint, there is nothing that rivals the absurdly over built quality of the system.

The buyer will have to design their own power supply to run this module. Don't miss a once in a life time opportunity to add one of the rarest synthesizer modules ever made to your modular. All the connectors are standard 1/8" which will interface directly with all Eurorack modulars and similar gear."

Solar Orbiter - Minimoog Voyager XL - Moog Slim Phatty & Korg Radias - Andy Barrow

YouTube Uploaded by MrRidgebackman on Mar 20, 2012

"Hi Everyone,

This is the final version of the video I uploaded 2 weeks ago "Sneak Preview".

The Minimoog Voyager XL, along with the Moog Slim Phatty and the Korg Radias. I suggest a pair of headphones for this piece for better effect

We start off with a brief intro using the Voyager XL and then the music begins with the Radias (Pads and the Lead Synth part way through the video) and the Moog Slim Phatty being used for the rhythm. I then bring the XL in to play a moody lead lead synth (2 Osc's used, the second used primarily for harmonic content). The Radias takes over later on and then we finish with Moog Slim Phatty and the Voyager XL.

This is a long video and piece of music for me, and one which has taken some time to put together. This is a completed version, but one I think I will revisit at some point. Not entirely happy with the mix.

I hope you enjoy.

Best Wishes

Andy"

Cascadr 2.04 Demo

"This video shows off the new feature of Cascadr which is the ability to save sequences to one of eight slots. It's possible to switch slots and tweak 'on the fly' while Cascadr is playing music. This now means it's pretty easy to make a simple song with Cascadr now, albeit with some live dodging about!
I'll be exploring this slot idea further for sure!"

cascadr - glidepro
iPads on eBay
iPads on Amazon

"Cascadr experiments with the idea of playing a sequence of notes and a number of speeds - simultaneously. Rather than the sequences being played in time with each other (for example, 30bpm, 60bpm, 120bpm...) they are played at intervals of 1bpm - which generates an interesting cascading effect.

There are eight notes in this sequence, and each note’s pitch can be chosen over a range of 2 octaves (on a chromatic scale) starting from A4 (or 440Hz). It’s also possible to alter the volume of each note, so emphasis can be placed on specific notes. Simply touch the column that represents the value you wish to change and drag up or down. When you change a note or note volume, the change will be heard straight away.

Perhaps most importantly, you can choose the speed of the sequences. As the idea of this application is to play sequences with this cascading effect, you can only choose the speed of the first sequence. So, if you choose a speed of 10bpm, the next sequence will be played at 11bpm, the next at 12bpm and so on.

Along with functions for starting and stopping the sequence, there is a ‘re-sync’ function that allows you to restart the sequence from the beginning, meaning that all of the sequences will be put back in sync again.

While there may be some ‘shock-horror’ at the lack of syncopation, Cascadr can produce some really ambient melodies and rhythms - along with some interesting chords as the sequences slide in and out of time. Just set your sequence, speed, play and listen.

I’ve got plans to add more features for customising the sequence further, and providing the ability to choose different sounds so stick around!

Have fun with it!"

RIP Mike Brown of Livewire Electronics

Via an Interview with Mike Brown on Vicmod
(Be sure to click through for the full interview):

"Mike tell us a little about yourself.

This is the one I usually dread... (I'm not one for talking about myself much) but how about this: Played in a few bands during the '80s & '90s... if anyone remembers Cafe'Noire, Aura Circuit, or my solo project, Electronium (probably not... haha) Studied electronic music at Cal State University San Bernardino under Dr.Raymond Torre-Santos (now at Hunter College in New York). At the time they did not have an electronic music program, so when I showed up for recitals with my reels of tape music... the jury of music dept. administrators threw me out... haha...2 years later they had a full blown electronic music major program. figures.

I had always wanted a modular synth... but being married with small kids, had no hope of justifying the expense. Then around 1994, I discovered a book in the local library... 'build your own synthesizer' by Thomas Henry. I thought "I can do *this*!" so I set about gathering parts from local surplus stores and schematics from anywhere I could get them... library books mostly... I was on the internet, but this was pre-web days I think... So then I went about starting small fires for the next six years or so... ;) Eventually, the circuits began to actually work... and then I was thoroughly hooked."

And we were too. Thank you for everything Mike, we are going to miss you.

MODULUXXX - Modular Synthesizer Mini-Festival

"Moduluxxx is a 2 day thermo voltaic burn out celebrating and exploring modular synthesis. Somewhere between a museum, a LAN party and a pet show, Moduluxxx will be an space for vicarious enjoyment, learning, rubber necking, starting a dangerous new hobby (fiscally speaking), kicking tires or brushing shoulders with your peeps.

Around the world modular synthesis is experiencing a renaissance of interest and experimentation, with new developments from high bandwidth video synthesis systems through to reinventions of granular synthesis in an analog context. In a creative audio world that is dominated by software, saved files and presets, modular synthesis offers no recall, each patch is unique and perhaps unrepeatable. The equipment itself is constructed in small manufacturing runs, often by hand, designed by dedicated enthusiasts operating out of their lounge rooms.

So what is modular synthesis anyway? It is a style of synthesiser design where the architecture is left open. Each element, whether it be a sound generator, filter, controller, modulator or effect can be reconfigured in an infinite variety of arrangements.

What is so great about it? Your mind can go wild with the possibilities! You might never finish a song or track again!!

Upon testing this unit, I discovered one of the battery terminals to be corroded. I cleaned it up with contact cleaner, inserted 3 AA batteries and continued to test it successfully on a K5000R. All knobs functioned and controlled the K5000R.

This is wonderful addition for programming the K5000W and K5000R synths- makes it much easier. It has a MIDI IN which you could plug a keyboard controller into and a MIDI OUT/Merge which merges the MIDI IN signal with the control signals of the unit itself."

FARFISA SYNTORCHESTRA - Analog Synthesizer 1975 | HQ DEMO

Uploaded by AnalogAudio1 on Jan 30, 2009

"Demo of the Farfisa Syntorchestra - an italian analog keyboard / synthesizer. It looks a bit like an ARP synth. This vintage baby was used by Klaus Schulze on his album Moondawn, by Ash Ra (Ashra Tempel) and by Vangelis.

Basically, it is a simple monophonic synthesizer with some presets which can be modified and a polyphonic section. These two sections can be also combined and slightly detuned (intervals are also possible) to sound like a 2-VCO monophonic synth. It is simple, and it sounds great - especially with a delay effect!

I use it today to produce interesting pad and lead sounds in my music - sounds, which you don't get from other synths. It sounds really vintage, like classic electronic music from the seventies!

I played the Syntorchestra along with delay from a Roland DEP-5."

The CP-251 Square Wave output was patched into the Four Way Multiple and then patched out of two Multiples into the Pitch and Gate inputs on the Minitaur. An EP-2 was then patched into Mixer input 3 with its output sent from the positive Mixer output directly into the last jack on the Four Way Multiple to control the Pitch of Minitaur. The CP-251 Triangle Wave output was then patched into the MF-102 Rate input to sync it with the Square Wave output that was sent to Minitaur. The output of Minitaur was then sent to the MF-102 Ring Mod input which was overdriven to add grit and engaged regularly for performance."
