Introducing the BASE Pack for Animoog

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Mar 29, 2012

"The BASE Pack is born from a quest Moog engineers embarked on with help from researchers at The University of North Carolina at Asheville to discover the most primordial sounds known to man. The result is the Biomimetically Augmented Synthesis Expansion Pack (BASE Pack) for the Animoog synthesizer. The BASE Pack is a collection of timbres and presets that radically extends the sonic capabilities of Animoog from the purely electronic realm of its Moog ancestry into a richly organic world of biological sound.

In addition to the over 40 new Timbre files, Moog recruited top sound designers to craft 25 powerful new presets which demonstrate the range of BASE sounds that Animoog can now emit. Some of the Presets included are Extravasation, Eructations, Bad Beans, Bathtub Bubbles, and Oops Sorry Excuse Me. Some of the Timbres included are Sploot2, WetGas1, Dribbly, WetSquish2 and Excuse Me.

Animoog is available for the iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch in the iTunes Store. Animoog version 1.0.2 includes the new "Animoog Store" where users can purchase new Timbres and presets from within the app itself. The BASE Pack is only the first in a series of wide-ranging, boundary-pushing sonic updates to come.

Nine Inch Nails on Dance Party USA with Rare Polyphonic Minimoog

YouTube Uploaded by Uktrayf on Mar 28, 2012

"A hilarious video of NIN performing Down In It on some ridiculous '80s music show."

via dlisted, via @trent_reznor (starting here):

"Many years ago, a young and naive Nine Inch Nails were asked what TV shows they'd be interested in appearing on. As a joke (and likely drunk), they thought of the most absurd choice they could come up with at the time. They were then informed their bluff had been called and were actually booked on said show... They hopped in their Honda Civic touring vehicle (hatchback) and travelled many miles to (I think) NJ for the big show. They had a laugh making fun of the people, their fashion choices and hairstyles. Life was good. Years later, the internet is discovered... There's a moral in there somewhere. Come to think of it, Skrillex may indeed owe me some publishing on that hairdo..."

Self modulating patch.

Two VCOs frequency modulated by an Ian Fritz Chaos generator.
The X axis of the CGS Joystick is controlling the amount of FM to the second VCO via a Balanced Modulator.
The second Balanced Modulator is feed with the pulse output of the two VCOs and is feed to the FM input of the Steiner Filter. The Y axis is controlling the amount of FM via a VCA.

To appreciate the full bottom end of the Yusynth VCOs, I recommend you listen with headphones. Watch your volume though as the Filter FM gets nasty!"

"Who needs cartridges"

via this auction. Note the listing appears to be for the software only.

"In order to use this software you will need a vintage Kaypro computer II computer and a working Synergy II or Synergy II+. You can tell a Synergy II from a first generation Synergy because a Synergy II has a 25 pin serial port on the back of it.**
If you own a DK Synergy II or plan on owning a Synergy II then this is an essential purchase.

Up for grabs is 16 5.25" floppy disks for the DK Synergy. This is ALL of the software that you need to have complete control over your Synergy, plus over 500 original voices for your Synergy. With this software you will be able to fully program your own sounds from scratch plus tweak the over 500 sounds that are included in the voice library. Also included in the auction is a hard copy of the Synergy manual and the manual for using your Synergy with a Kaypro. This manual includes the most recent addendum I have also included lots of other goodies like original price lists, cartridge order forms, and letters to prospective customers. There is doodling and underlining in the manual but nothing that obscures the text. The manual is printed on heavy card stock so there is no chance of tearing and it will last a lifetime."

Vintage Univox Maxi Korg Electronic Synthesizer

"This is quite a powerful analog synth. It's actually two classic Minikorgs in one keyboard. The strengths of this unit are the dual filters, allowing lowpass, highpass and bandpass filtering, ring modulation, and, of course, a warm classic analog synth sound. Capable of making a very wide range of sounds.

It's got 2 analog oscillators that can be used for one fat monophonic sound or 2 VCO's per voice for a fat duophonic sound. Flexible design with 2 VCF filters and even a ring modulator. The Maxi-Korg is a great source of early Korg sound that rivals competitors like the OSCar and Roland SH- Synths. No MIDI, no memory, but good bass and screechin' leads! It has no CV input either, though it can be modified to accept external control from the less standard Hz/V protocol"

The 4093 NAND Synth is a super-modifiable noise generator that will knock your socks off with its sheer amount of sonic potential! Low pulsing drones, random robotic chaos, high-pitched laser sounds - it's all here in this small package.

A great project to begin your explorations into the world of DIY sound synthesis, the 4093 NAND Synth PCB was designed with the beginner in mind: Board-mountable switches, tension-relief power supplies, socketed IC, hands-on knobs and switches for tone control, and a detailed silkscreen PCB to help you solder components right the first time. An über-cool mod section allows for all kinds of custom control - variable control voltage input, output gating, buffering, modulation; the sky's the limit with the 4093 NAND Synth PCB.

The 4093 NAND Synth PCB was designed by our electronics engineer Steven here at Synthrotek. Powered by 9V battery, an AC Adapter rated at 5-12V 200mA Center Negative polarity can also be used."

Moonlight Sonata (Mellotron)

YouTube Uploaded by MikeDickson on Oct 26, 2010

"From 'mellotronworks' http://www.mikedickson.org.uk/mellotronworks

Video by TheTesteccles

Better known as Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven himself seemed to despair of this piece's popularity, famously saying 'surely I have written better things' to the Austrian pianist Carl Czerny who I hope was equally confused by Ludwig's puzzlement. He almost certainly did write better things than this, but why did he view this as little more than a piece of fluff? Maybe he wasn't the best person to judge his own music - this has now become a likely contender for the most recognisable piece of music written for the piano.

Written in a hot Hungarian summer just as his deafness was starting, Ludwig composed this piece for his young student Countess Giulietta Guicciardi to whom he later proposed marriage. Her parents forbade the idea and Beethoven lived the rest of his life as a bachelor. Stories abound about this piece being played for a blind girl to describe the moonlight, but the reality is that it was never known by this name until the poet Rellstab realised that it described the moonlight reflected on Lake Lucerne in the 1830s. The name stuck.

Readers who can play the piano are encouraged not to listen to what I have recorded. For reasons I cannot quite fathom, this is a piece of music that is actually better to play than to listen to. I can't quite pin down the reason for this, but it's a tune for the musician rather than the audience. It certainly seems appropriate, as Beethoven was a real muso's muso, being a fair old bag of firecrackers himself. He drank like a fish, was probably bipolar, suffered from progressive lead poisoning administered by his doctors, had a thing for married women, was notoriously unkempt in his later life, had a nature so irascible that his intended adoptive son attempted to shoot himself in the head to escape his temper, and eventually became something close to sociopathic. He'd storm out of parties if asked to play something, and on the occasions that he was performing he would stop if the audience started talking among themselves and invite them to shut up and listen. Best of all, he had no concept of social rank or status and treated everyone much the same, a concept that Ode to Joy seems to echo in its words promising fraternity and equality, though perhaps not quite as Schiller intended. Eventually, a worn-out Archduke Rudolph let it be known that the mores of court etiquette didn't have to be applied to Ludwig any more as it was utterly pointless to even try.

What a guy."

YouTube Uploaded by RheyneMusic on Mar 30, 2012

"A live, improvised jam using only iOS apps and Ableton Live, with a splash of NI's Kontkat. Four of the devices are producing sound, and Lemur is wirelessly controlling effects and live looping in Ableton Live, as well as triggering drums in NI's Kontakt. Nothing was pre-recorded or pre-sequenced for this performance. The only preparation for this piece was pressing "play" in Ableton to start the sequencer at 120bpm, matching NodeBeat's clock. This allows NodeBeat's pulse from its generators to serve as a visual queue for the first beat of each measure. This helps while recording loops since Ableton's loopers are quantized to one bar.

Apps used: Physynth by Simian2, AffinityBlue's NodeBeat, Lemur by Liine, and two instances of Moog's Animoog.

Software used: Ableton Live, and NI's Kontakt.
