"Our intrepid explorers have uncovered yet another relic from yesteryear... some military equipment they have salvaged from a bygone age which we have taken apart and modified to create a(nother) unique and unusual synthesiser.

We've managed to modify this old kit to give seven mixable oscillators, each one individually tunable using thumbwheel controls and a DETUNE control to add depth. With FM and AM and a LO-FI control that reduces sample rate and bit-depth, 130p is capable of a wide range of sounds from the abstract to the extreme and as capable of prog leads, basses and soft pads to bizzare, retro noises, machine drones and effects that wouldn't be out of place in an old British sci-fi movie and a perfect complement for the other MLMs."

YAMAHA CS-10 Analog Synthesizer 1977 | HQ DEMO

YouTube Published on Apr 13, 2012 by AnalogAudio1

"The YAMAHA CS-10 came out 1977. It is a monophonic synthesizer equipped with 1 VCO, 1 multimode resonant filter (highpass, lowpass, bandpass, but self oscillating of the filter is not possible - why?), 1 LFO, 1 noise generator, 2 envelopes. It also has an external signal input. This is great for processing signals - a bit like Korg MS-20 (I did this with a Roland TR-606 in the video). The LFO is very fast. It has CV and trigger inputs/outputs.

A nice little synth with some nice sounds!

I played the CS-10 along with a Roland DEP-5 (delay) and a Lexicon MPX-500 (reverb)."

Shruthi-1 4-pole Mission Filter Board - One Board to Rule Them All

via Mutable Instruments

"One board to rule them all… This filter board is probably the most advanced 4-pole core for the Shruthi-system! It uses the same “Pole-mixing” technique introduced in the Oberheim Xpander to provide a cornucopia of filter responses. It also provides 4 different settings controlling the “flavour” of the resonance, clean and liquid, MS-20 style, wobbly/chaotic, and a combination of the MS20 and wobbly modes.

The filter core is based on a SSM2164, for a very low-distortion and pure sound. A LM13700 is used as a global VCA and for resonance control, with loudness compensation.
Using this filter board

Please make sure that both the analog (CV1 to +5V) and digital (RX to +5V) ports of the filter and control boards are connected.

Beware! Only the Shruthi-1 firmware v0.96 (or above) generates the digital signals required to control the mode selection and routing matrix. In addition, it is not possible to use simultaneously the 4-Pole Mission filter board and the Programmer since they will be both accessing at the same time the digital extension port. To activate the 4-Pole Mission filter board, select 4pm in the system settings page. If you don’t do so, it is likely that it will emit glitchy filtered sounds everytime you navigate through the pages.

When pressing the S2 switch (Filter page) a second time, a new page is displayed allowing you to configure the filter routing.

Cut res mod fla
100 33 lp4 liq

The parameters are the following:
cut (cutoff): Cutoff frequency, conveniently repeated on this page.
res (resonance): Resonance level, conveniently repeated on this page.
mod (mode): Filter mode. See below.
fla (flavour): Resonance flavour. See below.

The following 15 filter modes are available:
lp4: 4-pole low-pass.
lp3: 3-pole low-pass.
lp2: 2-pole low-pass.
lp1: 1-pole low-pass.
hp1: 1-pole high-pass.
hp2: 2-pole high-pass.
hp3: 3-pole high-pass.
bp2: 2-pole band-pass.
bp4: 4-pole band-pass.
notch: notch filter.
phaser: phaser.
h2lp: 2-pole high-pass and 1-pole low-pass (band-passlike).
h3lp: 3-pole high-pass and 1-pole low-pass (band-passlike).
n+lp: notch and 1-pole low-pass.
p+lp: allpass and 1-pole low-pass.

The 4 resonance flavours are:
liquid: standard, close to the CEM or Roland designs (no loudness drop).
ms: Korg-35 style soft limiting is introduced in the signal chain.
wobbly: The 1-pole output is fed back to the filter cutoff frequency for a rubbery chaotic and modulated resonance.
whacky: A combination of the ms and wobbly modes."

"As a composer, there are times when you are experiencing that creative “dryness”. It may either be difficulty completing an idea or even coming up with one at all. It is a good thing that Improvisor, music composition application created by Percussa for the AudioCubes, can actually stimulate your creativity. By playing around with it, you can get ideas for your next masterpiece. In this piece, we will learn how to use Improvisor as a tool for what I would call semi-stochastic, polyphonic and symphonic composition."

Using Percussa's AudioCubes with Arduino

via Percussa

"If you’ve been living under a rock, and haven’t heard about the Arduino yet, it’s described as an 'open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software.' One of the key features of the Arduino platform is the way it can serve as the 'glue' in a system – reading inputs from physical sensors and transmitting those values to a computer. The Arduino can also be used to generate analog voltages from a computer, and that’s exactly what we need here. An analog synthesizer will often use what’s called 'control voltage' to modulate parameters like oscillator frequency, filter cutoff, or an amplitude envelope. We’re going to connect the Evolvor software to an Arduino so that we can control a synthesizer." Full details here.

Mick Jagger with Moog Modular in Performance

You might remember Mick Jagger in Performance from the video below posted back on March 24, 2011. The Alternative Shipping Forecast has a post up with additional details on the Moog system used. Click through for the full post.

"In Analog Days: The invention and impact of the Moog synthesizer [on Amazon], Trevor Pinch and Frank Trocco tell the story of Jon Weiss, the Man from Moog, who traveled to London in the summer of 1968 with a series of black carrying cases that contained the component parts of the Moog Series III modular synthesizer. His students in London were to be the Rolling Stones, whose manager, Allan Klein, had managed to convince Robert Moog that, for promotional purposes, the Stones would receive a Moog synthesizer and a week’s free tuition...

The Stones’ electronic experiments come to the fore not on any of their studio albums, but on the tracks they recorded for Performance, the Donald Cammell/Nicolas Roeg film that was in production at exactly that moment. Mick was so taken with the device that it became a prop in the film itself, its aura of technological futurity fitting well with the film’s experimentalism and surrealism."

6U BLUE LANTERN MODULAR SYSTEM

That's one colorful system. It does not appear to include the controversial ZTVCO.

via the listing: "The case was Pro made by a Plastics Manufacturer. I installed (2) Pairs of Black Tip Top Z rails myself. I designed the Linear Power Supply myself. It is more then enough power for a 6U system. The beefy heat sinks don't get hot at all. There is a 2.1mm Jack where you can plug in a 5v Slim wall adapter if you needed to supply the 5v rail on the Doepfer Power scheme. The modules that I design don't use the 5v rail so I don't include the 5V wall adapter. You can buy one on ebay for about $10.00 (Center tip Positive). You only need the 5v Wall adapter if you ever buy Modules that require use of the 5v Rail.

SO THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE COMPLETED 100% WORKING MODULAR SYNTH AND THE DETACHABLE POWER CORD.

The buss boards follow the Euro Format standard and are compatible with all the Euro Manufactures out there.

FlexibeatzII Pattern Based Music Making Application

YouTube Uploaded by sawsquaresine on Apr 10, 2011

"Please visit http://flexibeatz.weebly.com

FlexibeatzII has a default grid of 16 checkboxes (or steps), each step being 1/16th of a measure, although you do have the option of changing resolution to 1/32nd of a measure if you desire. You then chain these patterns of notes together to form longer compositions. You can use any .wav sound samples of your choice, or sounds you synthesize with the application itself from scratch, in each of the application's 10 channels. You can even combine samples with sounds you have created yourself, such as frequency modulating one with the other. Besides extensive sample editing and synthesis options, you also have a multitude of effects and 3-band parametric EQ per channel available. You can vary the pan, pitch and level of each sound in each channel, mute and solo sounds, specify which sounds can cut-off which other sounds, vary each sound's start and end point, and accent and swing notes, all while the sequence is playing. Tools are also provided to automatically chop up drum loops into individual hits, lock tempo of sounds in channels to master tempo, and auto-generate arpeggiator patterns. Once your composition is complete, you can record it to a .wav and .mp3 file. The application can be operated as a standalone application working off its own internal timer, or you can slave playback via midi-sync to another DAW or external sequencer."

Paint2Sound Image to Sound Converter

YouTube Published on Apr 9, 2012 by sawsquaresine

"Paint2Sound is a neat little free application for converting any .jpg or .bmp image or any picture you care to draw/paint, into a soundscape. Each pixel row represents a frequency band. The application synthesizes sine waves for each pixel row with an instantaneous amplitude determined by the brightness of each pixel in the pixel row, and then sums together all the sine waves. There is user control over various parameters like sample rate, sound duration, how frequencies are distributed across the pixel rows and the overall level in the mix of each sine wave. Can never have enough wacky sound sources I say..."

ESX-4CV CV Expander

via Expert Sleepers

"The ESX-4CV is an expansion module for the ES-4 or ES-5, adding four CV outputs from one expansion header.

In order to squeeze four 12 bit channels through one 8 bit connection, the channels are time-multiplexed and so effectively run at one-eighth of the audio sample rate. For example, if the audio interface/DAW is running at 48kHz, the ESX-4CV's outputs are running at 6kHz. This is still plenty fast enough for most CV purposes, except for audio-rate modulation and the very fastest envelopes. Because the outputs are still derived from the audio stream, they retain the advantages of the ES-3/4 over traditional MIDI-based interfaces, that is, rock solid timing and absence of jitter.

The outputs are hardware calibrated and so do not require the use of e.g. Silent Way's software calibration when used with standard V/octave synths/oscillators. That said, the ESX-4CV's 12 bit resolution is adequate to perform software calibration if required (e.g. to cater for misbehaving oscillators that don't track well to a standard calibration), or to support oscillators with a Hz/V response.

Coming April/May 2012. See here for some info.
Specifications
The ESX-4CV's specifications are as follows:

Panel width: 4HP
Module depth: 26mm
Digital input: connection from ES-4 or ES-5 module
Analogue outputs: 4x 3.5mm jacks, DC-coupled
Output voltages: ±5.33V, hardware calibrated
D/A conversion: 12 bit, using high precision Analog Devices DACs
Indicators: 2 LEDs per channel (+ve and -ve voltages)
Current draw: TBC"

"Here is my brief take on the Roland Gaia SH-01.

Pros: It has some really good sounds, particularly bass and leads. It has a great arpeggiator.

Cons" Only 37 Keys!!! Why why why???? The layout is horrible. It's a royal pain to navigate in real time! It's a pain to sync to a drum machine.

Overall: Roland is onto something here. If the next Gaia had a cooler name, 61 Keys, and a layout similar to the Jupiter 8 or the Jupiter 6 then this could be a really great synth. I not only love the sound of the early Jupiters, I love the simple layout as well. They are so easy to quickly navigate. Will Roland listen to what I am saying....probably not :("
