"Testing out the new Brain v2, I repurposed the Code Step Sequencer (as featured here: cycling74.com/2012/01/17/working-with-hardware-livids-code-part-two/) so it would work with these MIDI controller parts.
I hooked up a couple of the Livid Elements modules to the Brain, and hooked up my photosynth (an array of 16 photoresistors, described here: blog.lividinstruments.com/2011/04/22/photosynthesis/) to control the effects on one of the sounds (parameters on the reverb, delay, and filter). I use my crummy cellphone camera's light to provide a source of photons to alter the effects in a dramatic fashion."

"By request here is the rare deltalab dl-2 from the Canmarc collection. Jesse & I use it all the time. It's a dual digital delay line that can function in serial or parallel mode. It's unique in many ways, the most obvious being in the name. It's one of the few digital devcie that uses delta modulation instead of pcm to sample audio and it's part of the reason it has a unique sound. You can sample the input, hold and randomise the delay, then add eq + reverb and modulate the result with an LFO on delay time and reverb pitch. You can change image and phase on the fly, and it has voltage control inputs on the back for the VCO. Around it are a couple other of our vinatge units, above is another rare Deltalab, The dl-5 Harmonicomputer voltage controlled pitch shifter and below it is the Intersound R100 spring reverb."

"Genuine NEW REALISTIC Concertmate 200 Portable Electronic Mini Keyboard Synthesizer (clone of the Casio VL-Tone VL-1 rebranded for sale in Radio Shack stores) which comes in the factory box with the protective case (but no manual) as pictured in the actual photos. Radio Shack licensed and re-branded the CASIO VL-Tone with its proprietary name under the REALISTIC brand. This mini synthesizer is best known for its use in Trio’s song “Da Da Da”, which uses the “Rock 1” preset for its rhythm track. How is it new, you ask? Because it simply sat around in my storage for years without being taken out for use. I took it out to test it prior to listing though, to make sure it powers on and works. There is not a scratch or crack on it anywhere. It combines a calculator, synthesizer and sequencer. Released around 1980, the VL-1 originally sold for about $150. Specifications: Polyphony – Monophonic; Oscillators - 1 VCO; LFO - Vibrato, Tremolo; Arpeg/Seq - Sequencer: 100 notes, 1 pattern. Rhythm Machine: March, Waltz, Swing, Rock, Samba, Beguine, Bossa Nova; Keyboard - 29 tiny keys (with 3-position octave switch); Memory - 1 user patch, 5 preset sounds, 10 built-in rhythm patterns. Works on 4 AA batteries (or an optional AC Adapter)..."

"This is a little demo i've made with the Jupiter 4. Since the first two albums from The Human League, this synth is well known. And i can say, this synth has a very special timbre. The Jup4 is not midified. All lines were played by hand. Only the bassdrum, snare and the HiHats are sampled from the Jupiter 4 and were played by a sampler. I've also used the internal JP4 arpeggio. As always a multitrack recording with some fx."

Analog Drum 'n Bass

Analog Drum 'n Bass from K X on Vimeo.

"This is my imagining of what circa '98 era minimal tech step drum 'n bass may have sounded like had it been invented before modern samplers and digital synths / fx.

All the sound is being generated live, coming straight from the main mixer in the middle, with no multitracking. Sequenced by 3 vintage hardware sequencers, the Yamaha QX-1, Roland MC-4 and Roland MC-8 locked together by tape-sync.

List of the main gear used :

Sequencers : Roland MC-8, Roland MC-4, Yamaha QX-1

Modulars : Roland System 100 (Drums), Moog series 900 (pads), Roland System 700 (Basses), Arp 2500 system, Buchla 100 series.

Other Synths : Korg MS-20, Roland System 100 standalone synth.

FX : Roland Space Echo RE-501 (tape delay, chorus, spring reverb), Roland DC-30 (analog chorus-echo), Roland Dimension-D Analog Chorus.

Mixer : Tascam M308b"

Update: some additional info:

"If you're interested, the system 100 is doing all the drums, the moog is doing the atmospheric pad chords (as heard from the very beginning), the ARP is doing the stabs which are heard from very near the beginning, the system 700 is doing both the deep sub bass growls, and also the big ominous stabs in the middle build-up section (the MS-20 is just acting as a distortion unit for those), the system 100 standalone synth is doing the reese sound (as heard in the last bar before the drop), and the Buchla is doing all the main theme sounds which you can see if you look closely at the Buchla sequencer's timing lights during the main part.
The MC-4 is sequencing the drums and the reese, the MC-8 is sequencing the Moog and 700, and the QX-1 is sequencing the Buchla and Arp.

The whole project took almost 2 weeks, but nearly half of that was spent getting all the gear set up, synced up, talking to eachother nicely etc. Each day quite a bit of time was spent re-tweaking the sounds after the synths cooled down overnight, also the MC-4 program takes about 15 minutes just to load, (30 minutes to save including verify) and on top of that, the MC-8 refused to save at all, so I had to organise it so I could do all of the MC-8 programming and recording in one day. Next time it should take less time, since now I've got the setup all figured out."

"Good things: It is very rare and hard to find in nowadays instrument, even in Latvia. It was engineered and produced in Riga Musical Instruments Factory in early 80-90 ties. Synthesizer is in good visual condition (see in pictures) , it has all the knobs and keys sounds powerful and has very interesting sounds. Comes with a original soft case and original user manual.

Bad things: All the keys are working, but when pressing, sound comes with a small delay. So it does not play the sound instantly. May be someone is smart enough to fix this and make this really rare machine into full life again."

Native Instruments Introduces SKANNER XT

"Berlin, 26th of April, 2012 - Native Instruments today introduced SKANNER XT, a unique and highly distinctive KOMPLETE instrument, designed by the expert team behind REAKTOR. With a strong focus on unconventional tone and genuine musical expression, SKANNER XT is both an exceptional library addition for REAKTOR 5 users as well as an excellent sound resource for the free REAKTOR 5 PLAYER.

Part sampler, part synth, SKANNER XT utilizes a unique synthesizer architecture to create a wide variety of intense and cutting-edge sounds for contemporary electronic music production and sound design. Two oscillators 'scan' a sample, which at low frequencies deliver a scratch sound. At higher frequencies the oscillators, shaped by the sample waveform, become the dominant force. In this way, SKANNER XT provides a broad range of highly distinctive sounds - from heavy and dirty bass tones to morphing soundscapes and organic pads.

Developed together with NI synthesis mastermind Stephan Schmitt, SKANNER XT offers two interface views for different levels of interaction with the complex architecture under the hood. Besides a simplified page with a preset morpher and four macro controls, a second view provides access to more detailed parameters in order to further explore the sonic potential of the instrument. A morph control option allows for convenient switching between eight different snapshots - producing unpredictable, evolving sounds that range from the ethereal to the extreme.

SKANNER XT runs in the free REAKTOR 5 PLAYER or the full REAKTOR 5 version, and is also optimized for easy browsing from the MASCHINE hardware.

SKANNER XT is available at the NI Online Shop for $59 / 49 EUR. Users of the previous free version SKANNER, are entitled to crossgrade to SKANNER XT for a special price of $29.50 / 24,50 EUR until May 31st.

Additional information on SKANNER XT is available at

ARTURIA - Introducing Wurlitzer V

YouTube Published on Apr 26, 2012 by Arturiaweb

"The Wurlitzer V is a high end software recreation of the classic Wurlitzer 200A electric piano.

Unlike sample libraries, its physical modeling engine reproduces the very acoustic properties of reeds, key action and amplification, bringing you high realism while offering maximum flexibility on sound.

As most producers know, the legendary bright and overdriven Wurlitzer sound heard on classic records also comes from the use of fine amplifiers, micing and processing. This is why the Wurlitzer V goes further by putting you in command of a studio from the 70's, filled with vintage stompboxes and classic tube amps... everything you need to get a true classic vibe!

If you are looking for a lively electric piano combined with inspiring studio tools, the Wurlitzer V is the ultimate package.
