Waldorf Q Voice Expansion Clone Project

via Chase:

"I have been looking for voice expansion modules for my Q-Rack, they are hard to find now and the Waldorf distributors are tapped out.

I found a company in the US called Encore Electronics that is willing to produce a lot of 50 or more of these units, but there are 4 caveats:

1- Confirmed 50-100 or more buyers

2- A Q synthesizer and an expansion module to reverse engineer.

3- Development lead time of about 3 months.

4- Module price is estimate around $375.

You may provide your First Name, last initial and location to confirm if you are interested.

Please specify if you are interested in temporarily donating an expansion module (I don't have one), I will be temporarily donating my only Q Rack if there is enough demand to take this to the next step.

Also, if you know a Q or XT owner interested in a voice expansion, send them over to this post to throw in their 2 cents.

If anybody knows some other forums for Q users to get the word out on this please let me know where else to post - any suggestions are welcome.

Survey and status is posted here if you are interested or wish to contribute:

Korg Announces iKaossilator V2.1 App & Sale

"MELVILLE, NY, April 27, 2012 - Korg has released Version 2.1 of its best-selling* iKaossilator app for the iPhone® and iPad®. To celebrate the new release, current iKaossilator users can update at no cost. New users can purchase iKaossilator V2.1 from the App Store (inside the iTunes Store) at a special price of $9.99 USD - a 50% savings - until May 7, 2012. Special savings are also being offered on Korg's entire selection of top-selling apps, including iMS-20, iElectribe and iElectribe Gorillaz Edition, which are all available at 50% off their regular price until May 7th, 2012.

The iKaossilator is an expressive music synthesizer app offering 150 diverse sounds, combined with a five-part loop sequencer for creating multi-part tracks. As with all Korg Kaoss products, the iKaossilator is controlled by tapping or sliding a finger on its X-Y touchpad. This intuitive form of control is instantly rewarding, and allows users to quickly create music, regardless of their instrumental training.

New features added in iKaossilator Version 2.1 include:

Audio Loop Import
Seamless operation in tandem with the Kaossilator 2
Support for "AudioPaste"

Audio Loop Import
Users' Audio loop files can now be imported into each part of the sequencer. ** A filter effect assigned to the touch pad can then be used to vary the character of the song, similar to the function of Korg's Kaoss Pad Effects Processor.

Seamless operation with Korg Kaossilator 2
The Audio Loop Import feature also enables closely coupled operation with iKaossilator's hardware sibling, the Korg Kaossilator 2. Loop recorder data created with a Kaossilator 2 can be imported into iKaossilator, or an audio loop created in iKaossilator can be loaded into a loop recording bank in the Kaossilator 2. Data such as loop length and BPM is retained, resulting in seamless transfer between the software and hardware.

Support for "AudioPaste"
iKaossilator now supports the "AudioPaste" function developed by Sonoma Wire Works, which allows audio data to be copied and pasted between iOS apps. Audio data can be exported from Korg's other apps such as iElectribe or iMS-20, or from any "AudioCopy" compatible app, then imported into iKaossilator with ease.

For additional iKaossilator product details, please visit: www.korg.com/ikaossilator."

"Here we demonstrate the features of the iMoov and show you how to set up your Moovments.

After 2 years of research into sensor technology, we are proud to present the iMoov by TangibleFX. To celebrate this release, the app is free for the first 5000 users.

Rough Trade East In-store - SYNTHESIZER DAY WITH SCHNEIDERSBUERO & WOLFGANG SEIDEL

"NO WRISTBAND NEEDED, JUST COME DOWN ON THE DAY/NIGHT

SchneidersBuero will celebrate a Synthesizers Day at Rough Trade East in London. There will be several workshops on tools and instruments all over the shop just for one day - apart from usual activities around their glass cabin, aka the testsalon. Moving through RTE will be a new adventure for the audience. All installations will be in sync with each other giving you beats and atmosphere all over the shop from a live performance, differing on where you are and what just happens.

At the front of the shop, HerrSchneider himself will moderate a workshop on several modular systems that will generate an experimental atmosphere of sounds and beats. You are welcome to join him. In other corners of the shop there will be fresh UK based manufacturers of electronic devices playing and presenting their own products in time: Steve Jones, director of Cronic will be playing on his VXXY and The Alphasphere, a controller for beats and performance will be presented by its inventor Adam.

The testsalon itself will, as always, be filled up with modular and desktop synth gear to play and will be performed by several clients and users over the day. Onur Oezer from Istanbul, T.Raumschmiere from Berlin and other artists are asked to come, still t.b.c. The very best moments can be heard over the shops audio system as they are performed live and visible from the cabin.

And as the highlight of the day and the usual daily rough trade instore live act, we are very much looking forward to a performance by Wolfgang Seidel a.k.a. Sequenza and the partner of Conrad Schnitzler (R.I.P) both headliners of the Krautrock era. Wolfgang has also been a headliner of this years Transmediale Berlin and is usually playing jams with old friends or tape concerts in memorial to his dear friend Conrad Schnitzler."

Synthi AKS Ableton Library by Soniccouture

"The EMS Synthi AKS is a legendary instrument with an illustrious history. First manufactured in 1972 by EMS in Putney, southwest London, the Synthi A was basically a portable version of EMS's famous VCS3 synthesizer, and the KS keyboard (an unplayable thirty-note touchplate) was added to make the Synthi AKS. It cost £420, and it was quickly adopted by the likes of Brian Eno and Pink Floyd, and has been used by experimental musicians ever since.

Our Synthi AKS is a surprisingly versatile library, giving you horror klangs and snappy zaps, snarling ring-mod leads and basses, and fat, rubbery mellow textures ready to slot into your productions. You'll be astounded at the sheer size and sense of life in the sounds. With complete control over filters, envelopes, and the spring reverb convolution impulse, you'll be able to tame the beast. Well, almost.

To capture the raw, unstable sound of the Synthi, we sequenced it using a CV-MIDI converter. This really shows the unique analog behavior of this incredible unit as the loops push and tear at your speakers. The loops are divided into a mid-tempo set (acid loops), and a down-tempo set. There is also a set of oddities that didn't fit into either category."

You'll find it and others at http://www.ableton.com/library/tags/synths/

Interview with Portal 2's Mike Morasky

Full interview on the Plogue website here. The interview covers some of the synth used with a focus on ChipSounds.

"Honestly, I probably used every chip available in chipsounds at one point or another. The only thing I purposefully avoided (after testing of course) was anything that actually sounded clearly like 8bit game sounds or game music. I was looking at those patches as if Aperture had actually sourced all these cheap chips as the voice boxes for the puzzle mechanisms in the test chambers. Although I tried writing some game style chiptunes, it really broke the immersive nature of the game and I ended up avoiding it."

"A unique characteristic of Portal 2′s soundtrack, apart from its sonic grandness, is that it’s generated in real time by an adaptive music system that react to the player’s actions. This dynamic music was also designed as a reward for successfully completing puzzles inside the game."

MacBeth Adds Osc 3 to Osc 2 Modulation to micromac

via Ken MacBeth on Facebook

"Just a quick update here- the micromac prototype #10 has fired up a treat- on board PSU is now excellent! Took a bit of thought that one! Anyway- one thing that I included for bothth 3U Eurorack users and the Desktop users is a tenth switch! This now allows Oscillator 3 to Modulate Oscillator 2- fantastic when Oscillator 2 is hard synched to Oscillator 1! So now we have the option via 1 switch for Osc 3 to mod Oscs 1 and 2 or another switch just to modulate Osc 3!"
