"K1 Mixer Interface

Kilpatrick Format Mixer and MIDI Interface - 1 Space

The K1 Mixer Interface module is a combination of a high quality five channel audio mixer and MIDI to CV converter. The mixer is designed for high level signals from other modules and offers both an AUX send for use with effects, and dual stereo outputs on banana and mini jacks, as well as a headphone amplifier with dedicated volume control.
Mixer Section

The mixer circuit incorporates high quality low-noise inputs on banana jacks. Three mono channels and one stereo channel all contain input level indicators and input level controls. The stereo channel offers an AUX send level control which sends a post-input level blend of the left and right channels to the AUX output.

The mono inputs offer level controls, a post-input level AUX send, as well as a pan control. Channel 5 offers a CV input for panning instead of a pan control.

The master output contains a stereo level control and a pair of banana jacks suitable for connection to other modules or daisy-chaining several mixers. A pair of mini jacks offer line-level signals that can be output to external audio equipment. Signal level indicators show the levels at the output jacks and sense the levels after the MASTER volume control. A ground jack provides access to the analog ground on the system.

A dedicated heaphone amplifier provides a stereo output on a mini jack with a dedicated level control. This output can also be used for powered speakers or stereo recorders that work more conveniently with stereo mini cables.
MIDI Interface Section

The K1 also contains a small but useful MIDI to CV converter. Built on the success of the K1600 MIDI Interface, the MIDI to CV converter on the K1 supports a number of useful MIDI to voltage conversions, plus a MIDI THRU jack for daisy-chaining. Outputs can be assigned to note, control change and pitch bend messages. Note playing modes include single (mono) mode, split keyboard mode, two-voice polyphonic mode, which is expandable up to 16 voices with additional modules, Arp Odessey-style duo-phonic mode, and single (mono) mode with velocity output on the second CV output jack.

Outputs are programmed by pressing the SET button to select the output mode to program and then sending a MIDI message to the unit. The MIDI channel, output type and other parameters are stored automatically in the module and restored at power-on."

"K2 // Pitch Oscillator

"Kilpatrick Format Analog VCO - 1 Space

The K2 Pitch Oscillator is a fully analog voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a traditional sawtooth core and waveshapers that provide sine, triangle, ramp and pulse outputs. Two different pulse modes offer either standard PWM pulse shaping or a unique multi-pulse mode that generates different timbres by producing multiple narrow pulses. Both modes can be pulse width modulated.

Front panel tuning is accomplished with coarse and fine tuning controls. Additionally a range switch allows a second coarse control to be added to the tuning signal allowing two ranges of tuning, or offering even more tuning range.

A special blend mixing section allows mixing of sine, triangle, ramp and pulse outputs. Two controls blend between sine and ramp, and triangle and pulse waveforms. These two signals are fed into a voltage controlled blending circuit which can be control with the BLEND MIX control or input control voltage.

Inputs include a calibrated V/octave input, linear and exponential CV inputs with bi-polar input level controls, a PWM input with level control, and a sync input which can be used to hard sync the oscillator with input pulses from another oscillator. Outputs are provided for the blend mix circuit and also separate outs for sine, triangle, ramp and pulse outputs."

"K3 // Digital Effects

Kilpatrick Format Digital Effects Processor - 1 Space

The K3 Digital Effects module contains two different digital effect units in a single module. The top REVERB / DELAY section produces high quality reverb and delay effects, all processed at 24 bits. The lower ITTI BITTI section produces lo-fi effects such as bit crushing and sample-rate reduction, wavefolding, distortion and signal multiplication. Reverb and delay effects are geared towards audio signals, whereas the ITTI BITTI effects can be used for both audio and low frequency control voltage signals.
Reverb / Delay

The REVERB / DELAY section provides high quality stereo reverb and delay effects with a dedicated audio DSP. A mono input and level control are used to feed audio into the processor. The output generates a left and right channel which create expansive reverbs and stereo delays. Three controls allow the reverb mix, delay mix and delay time to be controlled. The delay time can also be controlled with a voltage to create pitch shifted and sped up / slowed down effects. Two reverb algorithms and three delay algorithms are selected with the main PROGRAM control.
ITTI BITTI

The ITTI BITTI section occupies the lower half of the module. It generates low fidelity audio and CV effects using non-oversampled 12 bit analog converters to create a number of interesting types of distortion and digital processing of both control voltages and audio signals. It creates digital multiplication of two signals, sample and hold with sample-rate and bit depth reduction controls, wave folding with adjustable drive and break points, and a digital distortion effect which creates harmonically rich timbres from simple waveforms. The sample rate of the system is internally generated, or can be fed from a pitch oscillator or other source of pulses."

"K4 // Envelope Modulator

Kilpatrick Format Envelope Generator / LFO - 1 Space

The K4 Envelope Modulator combines two envelope generators and two LFOs into a single module. Each section supports a number of different uses in many types of patches.
Envelope Generator Section

The two identical envelope generators can operate in one of three modes: attack / hold / release, attack / release, and auto-repeat mode. Both a gate input and manual trigger button can be used to start and stop the evelopes, and the up and down times are voltage controllable. The outputs generate both a variable voltage and a pulse which activates during the release phase of the envelope.
LFO Section

A dual LFO section generates periodic signals of various speed and amplitude. The speed can be controlled by a voltage as well as by the panel control. The output level can be adjusted over a wide range including the ability to internally clip the output to max and min values.

Both channels of the LFO section can be synchronized together and the phase of the second channel can be adjusted ahead or behind by up to 180 degrees. This can be used to generate waveforms which have a known phase shift between them."

"K5 // Filter Amp

Kilpatrick Format Quad Filter / VCA - 1 Space

The K5 Filter Amp is a quad VCA and low-pass filter combination. Four identical channels offer manual or voltage controlled wide-band VCA, and also a low-pass filter section with controllable resonance. Both circuits operate in tandem with the same CV and input signal, but producing two simultaneous outputs.

The K5 uses high-quality, low-noise VCA circuitry throughout. The response is designed to smoothly track the input signal for optimum fades for use with an envelope generator or other type of modulation source. The LEVEL control can be used to tweak the response to suit the type of CV control and input signal.

The low-pass filter output has a resonance control which adjusts the response from slight peaking around the cutoff frequency, to extreme settings. The filter is not designed to self-oscillate but it does produce percussive pitched bursts when fed with very low frequency pulses."

Moog Taurus III Discontinued?

This one I do not have confirmation on. It came in on an email list via this link. BTW, I wouldn't sub to that list until we have confirmation. I'm not seeing mention of it on Moog Music Inc Facebook, and their Taurus page is up. I'm checking in with a couple of people at Moog and will post back. Note the date on this page is 6/6/12. It's 6/8/12 so something seems fishy. We'll see.

Update: I heard back from Moog and this is legit. Another notch in synth history. Word is the Taurus III was introduced as a limited set of 1000 units. Due to popular demand an additional 500 were made. 1500 units exist.

"6/06/12 Asheville, NC Moog Music today announced the end of production of the Taurus 3 Bass Pedals. The synthesizer company plans to build the final instruments this week and then forever close the production line. The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals have a nearly four-decade legacy and without the passion of Moog’s dedicated customers, these storied instruments would never have come to be.

Mike Adams, Moog Music President & CEO, explains the history, “After years of requests from our loyal customers to reissue the original Taurus 1 Bass Pedals, we realized we needed to do it, but simply did not have the resources. In order to fund the research and development, we asked those same loyal customers to pre-order 250 pieces. Thanks to their passion and dedication to Moog, by the end of that month we had over 250 pieces pre-ordered! In 2007 our engineering team, led by Cyril Lance, began work on the new Taurus 3.”

The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals were released in 2009 as a limited production reissue of the legendary Taurus 1. The Taurus 3 captured the classic sound and look of the Taurus 1, while improving on its functionality. Taurus 3 owners include Rush, The Black Keys, Animal Collective, Jean Michel Jarre, Yes, Weezer, and The Dave Matthews Band.

“It's been a great run and I want to thank all of you who, sight unseen, had the faith that we could design a product that you would covet. It's a special piece for a unique musician,” said Adams. “With the announcement that we will no longer be manufacturing this product, we are also announcing a new firmware release that improves performance and adds new user requested features. "

Extremely limited quantities of The Taurus 3 Bass Pedals are still available at stocking dealers.

The Taurus family of synthesizers lives on through Moog’s latest tabletop synthesizer, the Minitaur Analog Bass Synthesizer. For more information on this addition to the Taurus family of synthesizers go to: Moogmusic.com/minitaur."

"Includes two power cords, a bag full of patch cords, several original owners manuals and assembly books, two copies of " Polyphony Magazine", which was published by PAIA, and a copy of " Radio Electronics Magazine" that features information on PAIA products. The magazines are in worn condition, but they are an interesting addition to this item. There are two large stickers on the cabinet of the module: "ARP", and "The Alan Parsons Project- I Robot". There is one large sticker on the top cover of the keyboard: "moog". These also are an interesting extra touch of nostalgia for the synth. The cabinets are in excellent shape, with minor signs of wear. It took me awhile to figure out how to run this baby, but it was really a cool adventure. So many of the great sounds of the 70's and 80's are just a patch cord away. This thing truly ROCKS!..."

Space look... totally amazing, its sound is magic!
It's fully polyphonic with built in analog delay and chorus (both CV/keyboard touch controllable) Two cv-lfo's with many combinations, modulable also from keyboard aftertouch, filter is very very nice selectable from 2 to 4 poles, envelope follower for external signals and many other features.
For me is one of the best polyphonic synthesizers ever made with unique sound and an incredible look.
This is a small space sounds demo with both the enevelopes auto triggered from one cvlfo."

DJ Lace VS Creed MD - Zeroes on acid

Track and details below.

The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

DJ Lace vs Creed MD - Zeroes on acid by lacedj

"This is a classic west coast acid breaks track in the vein of old school records like Richard humpty visions’ “The feeling”, Dj Lace’s “The Future”, DJ Czech’s “I’ll bass you”, and the hot box remix of DJ prettyboy’s “Get on up”. It’s dark, moody and heavy. Perfect for a sweaty breaks jam.

It was created with Ableton Live 8, Roland TR 808, Sequential Circuits TOM, Korg DR-55, Xoxbox, Future Retro Revolution, Korg Poly six, Korg Monopoly. It was mixed on a DM4800 using the onboard TC electronics reverb, and a Fuzz factory guitar pedal set up in an effects send/return chain.

The track was originally recorded as a simple filter jam using the TR-808, the Tom, and the Xoxbox. The 808 kick drum was left at ¾ decay for most of the track and slowly closed at the end. Two more runs of the Xoxbox were recorded to create a total of 3 basslines that mix and match based on how each is modulated. There are no mixer moves on the bass lines other than mutes. The 3 volumes and effects send levels change based on filter and envelope settings of each Xoxbox. One bass line is dry, one has bright hall reverb, one has a swung tempo delay. All of them send some signal to the fuzz factory, which is mixed back in on a separate track for a bit of of top end distortion.

The Xoxbox with the TC reverb is the main lead of the track, and was set up with the effects send in pre-fader mode so the reverb setting could be set first and then bring in the dry sound to fill in after. The heavy top end noise near the end is added naturally by the resonance of the xoxbox filter feeding the reverb.

Although the TR-808 is run in sync, The sequential tom sounds are triggered via midi from Ableton. The kick, snare, hats and claps are used. The machine was recorded in mono to one track, and compressed for a bit more bite. The 808 was also recorded in mono to one track but not compressed. The two drum machines are mixed together dry. The tom track was slightly offset back from the 808 so it feels a little sloppy compared to the 808. It also lets the 808 kick drum point take precedence.

The Korg DR-55 has a modification so it can be triggered via midi. It also has a Korg style analog trigger output which was used to trigger the monopoly’s arpeggiator.

The Monopoly has four oscillators that you can trigger to play one after the other with the arpeggiator. It this case it is controlled by two devices. The Korg DR-55 is used to step the arpeggiator forward and the Future retro revolution is sending the note voltages that play the actual melody. Cross modulation is also used & you can clearly hear the resulting effect on the way the notes sound at the end of the track. The Korg Polysix was used for the string line, It was chosen because it sounds great with the monopoly as they share similar filter architectures, gelling the two synths together in the mix.

The vocal sample was recorded on location in Vancouver during a rainstorm using a zoom H2. It was shelved and compressed to bring up the ambient noise and make it sound like a sample taken from a movie. The zoom was chosen over better shotgun mics to help get a “recorded on location” feel. The filter is just the built filter in Ableton. The vocal filtering is not dramatic so the basic filter did the job fine.

The finished product has a true old school sound giving it an authentic vibe that you could imagine Donald Glaude or dj Czech dropping in a set at a classic Vancouver breaks party back in the 90s. Enjoy.

Sequenced Flame chords via the modded Doepfer clock sequencer and Circuit Abbey ADSR jr via a Flame FX6 in flanger mode. Bass is using an A155 sequencer to drive a Livewire AFG via a Flight of Harmony SoS. Bell sound is a Hertz Donut and Modcan FMVDO mixed and sequenced by a TipTop Z8000 and Intelligel uStep via the El Capistan delay pedal. Whole thing clocked thanks to the 4MS RCD and SCM."

"Trying out a new Polyvoks Filter. I chained the Q960 and Q119 step sequencers together so they would create a 13 step pattern. The melodic line repeats as several gate and switch settings come together. The Ardcore 001 and Yusynth Random Gates are working the gate logic for most all events and a CGS Master Divider sets envelope events as well. The main clock signal is from a Mega Ohm Audio LFO2. Every sound is within the modular with no outside FX or EQ. Straight to a single track in Cubase.
Loads of fun patching this up. I almost used all my cables this time."
