E-mu SP-12 Turbo / MFB Synth II Demo, by Jordan Passmore

YouTube Published on Jun 15, 2012 by jordanpassmore

"This is a demo of the E-mu SP-12 Drum Machine / Sampler and the MFB Synth II Analog Synthesizer. The only equipment used is the two machines listed plus an old Washburn analog delay and an Alto mixer. The drums are (obviously) the SP-12, the bass is a tone I sampled from the Synth II that is playing straight from the SP-12, and the sequenced patch is playing from the MFB Synth II. The MFB has it's own built-in sequencer.

Oh, and the mixer is located on a platform above the SP-12. Through-out the video I adjust volumes and stuff, there is no automation going on."

f you know about this unit, and you like being able to CRASH the springs in a real analog spring reverb, this is an amazing piece to have. It adds a lot of vibe to drum sounds especially, even when used low in the mix. You can drive signals into the red on this unit as well, and the saturation is an interesting fuzzy / lo-fi sound that is pretty flexible. Additionally, the envelope generator and the VCA/VCF modules are a nice bonus --- hook the Retroverb up to a modular or some other mod pedals, and you can get very complicated sounds out of this thing.

Bibio - Sampling in the garden...

"Sunshine in England is precious, so when the weather is fine it feels sinful to be cooped up in a studio, I'm very lucky to have the choice, so why not choose?

When the weather is fine, I like to take a few bits of gear outside and enjoy being creative in a different environment, plus there are all sorts of other sounds to explore outdoors, and in this case, sample.

A quick video of me making beats entirely out of recordings of objects found in the garden. No previously recorded samples were used.

Capturing sounds with a vintage Sennheiser MD-21 microphone, then using the EMU SP1200 for its inimitable fidelity, then resampled and sequenced on an Akai MPC 5000.

Videoed by me on a Canon 5D mkii."

Gershon Kingsley's Moog Modular System Up for Auction

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

This is the one featured in this video posted yesterday.

"This extraordinary and historic Moog modular system has been completely and expertly restored to full working conditon by E.A.R.S./The Analog Lab of New York City. They are New York's premier repair and restoration center for analog synths, and head tech Jeff Blenkinsopp has spent months (and I have spent several thousand dollars) on this restoration. All jacks, switches, and knobs have been thoroughly cleaned, all faulty modules have been repaired, the keyboard has new bushings for a smooth and consistent action, and it's tuning has been re-scaled, etc. In fact, the tuning is as good as you'll ever find on a 5 octave Moog keyboard- you can play the entire range and it will still be in tune with itself. Also, 3 of the oscillators had a factory mod done which makes the tuning more stable on them. This was done at the factory by Moog Custom Engineering, not by a third party. Everything else on the whole system is totally original and stock. A link to a video, below, allows you to hear the synth as well as see it, but first a bit more about what modules it consists of and it's history:
It is actually several things put together- the guts of the system , over half of it, was the original modular system first owned by Gershon Kingsley. He was a famous synth pioneer of the 60's and a good friend of Bob Moog's. He used it in a group called The Moog Quartet, who famously gave the first ever live public performances of a synthesizer at The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. By the way, Gershon will be celebrating his 90th birthday this fall with a performance in NewYork at Lincoln Center and has expressed an interest in using this synth for it. If the buyer is on the East coast of the U.S. I can put you in touch with him, and you might be able to rent him the system for that performance.
Several modules were added over the years, such as the reverb module (a great sounding spring reverb), and finally around 1977 the double sequencer cabinet. Most of the modules are dated Jan.1969 (they are stamped inside), some Oct.1969, some 1971, a few later than that.
It is a huge system, with 6 oscillators, 4 filters (2 low pass, one high pass, & one fixed filter bank), 2 VCA's, 4 envelope generators, and many other modules, some quite rare (such as the filter coupler) and topped off with 2 sequencers, complete with sequential switches and a sequential interface A complete list of the modules follows. with cabinet #1 being the furthest left in the photos, #4 all the way to the right:
Cabinet 1: 1x 904a Low Pass Filter, 1x 904b High Pass Filter, 1x 904c Filter Coupler, 1x 911a Dual Trigger Delay, 1x 903 White Sound Source, Control Voltages (no model #), 6 blanks
Cabinet 2: 1x 901 VCO, 1x 903a Random Signal Generator, 1x 905 reverb unit, 1x 995 attenuator, 1x 912 envelope follower, 3x 901a oscillator controllers, 5x 901b oscillators, 2x 4 channel mixer modules (no model #) Cabinet 3: 1x 907 Fixed Filter Bank, 1x 904a Low Pass Filter, Filter and Attenuator (no ID #), 2x 902 VCAs, 4x 911 Envelope Generators, 1x 911a Dual Trigger Delay, 2x 962 Sequential Switches, Envelope and Trigger Voltage Module (no model #), Mult module, Power Module w/ trigger and pitch in/out (no model#)
Cabinet 4: 2x 960 Sequential Controllers, 1x 961 Sequential interface,

Here is a link to a video made by The Analog Lab, who just completed the restoration. If you have trouble opening this link, try pasting it into your browser, or go to their website,www.theanaloglab.com and you will find the video You can hear the synth-the entire piece was recored on it a few days ago."

SCI Multi-Trak Battery Replacement & Preset Restore from Tape

YouTube Published on Apr 17, 2012 by tubical71

The Multi-Trak has a design flaw that causes the battery to leak quicker than most synths over time.

"This One is covering the replacement of an empty backup battery.

Did you know the model number of the MULTI-TRAK was 615...?
The MT has 6 Voices poly and it´s max. Six times multitimbral, has an build in sequencer with four trax up to 1600 notes total capacity and an arpegiator as well.
Both are syncable to midi-clock but not to be used together.
The MT has also a build in chorus for the main outs.
And futhermore every voice has it´s own output as well.

It respond to midi velocity and aftertouch. The keyboard is doing velocity as well but not aftertouch. It sends midi-clock when using the sequencer or arpegiator.
One can do stacks and splits with equal or 2/4 1/5 and vice-versa voicecount settings.
To do this simply press the Stack-button and hold the Trak-button and type in the voice you wanna have there from the number row buttons.

Way easy and straightforward...

My Multi-Traks´ serial is 02059

It was my very first Synth ever. I´ve bought it, used, a very looong time ago back in 1987, when I was 16 years old, for a huge amount of cash these 850DM looked for me back than.
I put by nearly every amout of money earned that days - and I went to the used-synth & organ shop almost once a week to see if my machine is still there....

And nearly one year later, as I got all needed cash, went to the store with my dad, smashed the cash on the table and said to the saleman....ok - now it´s time for the synth to come home with me....:D

And there it is...and it will remain here, I simply will NOT sale this Synth to anyone...!
Some newer synthies come some went away, some are going to come, but this Model 615 remains...outlives...
May someday i come across a TOM - witch is a fantastic companion to the Multi-Trak as it has the same panel-design..."

SCI Mutli-Trak Oldschool Tape Backup Restoring

"Restoring my MUTLI-TRAK sounds using the "Old-School" Cassette Interface and a Tape deck with a cassette holding the backup data.

Not very common today - people are using Midi-Dump instead. (like me as well on newer synths)

Another method is to use the cassette-interface in conjunction with a sampler. I´ve done this with the Crumar "BitOne" and the Böhm "Dynamic 12/24"

Wersi MK1 S2 Soundengine Showcase Part Four HQ-Audio

"My Wersi MK1 SII need some repairs, and I now have a DigiCam with a video funktion so let´s do a litle video, since I did not find any MK1 videos here in YT.
And sorry for my bad spoken english. This vid is only quick&dirty try to present the MK1.
The cams´ sound quality is not as good as I imagined, therefore i´ll do another one which covers the soundengine of the Synth in a seperate soundfile.

Brief overview of the MK1:
Full programmable Fourier sound synthesis with max. 32nd harmonics using the little sliders underneath the display
20 Voices max. polyphony. Each MK1 voice consist of a independent Preprogrammed Z80-style CPU - Back in the mid 1980 very expensive....
The price of a MK1 started at around 1500DM these days. What you get was only the MK1 and 4 voices - no extras. The "WersiVoice" and the VCF "Sounderweiterung" are only options and costs aux money..;)
A fully expanded version was around 8000DM, one voiceboard costs 249DM and the "effectsboard" was around 800DM back than, equals to $4000...in the mid/end 80th a huge amount of cash.
Ok Back to the MK1: the main strength was the complex VCA envelope. It has 8 "slots", 6 for "attack" modules and one for the sustain and the last for the release phase of the sound.
Each slot can load a module out of 18(!) types, like ramp, linear, expo all with or without dynamic control via the keyboard, wheels or external control. Additional a loop and some step funktions, a vibrato and noise(=random at low rates) module is available.
-pretty neat-
But simple ASDR is also here - but who´ll use this....? ;)
And futhermore all the same is possible for the pitch envelope - way cool -

Doing your own sounds isn´t very easy. In fact it´s -by far- more complicated than DX7 sound programming. Without the manual nothing is possible since the display just reads numbers, numbers and numbers -- for example programming the VCA:

Type Complex
1 NEW = 2048
2 NEW = 1024
....
15 NEW = 4095 (this is the sustain level)
16 NEW = 512 (release)

Ah...ok...no manual no idea...And you´ll need the overlays for the "funktion-matrix" on the most right of the machine only to get to the right place otherwhise you´ll may format the internal RAM instead of programming the VCA envelope...uups... happend to me some times...great to have them back´pd in a cardridge...:D"
