Something New from Dave Smith Instruments in the Works?

Soviet Space Child spotted this one on the VSE forum:

"Pym has already stated it will be "large" and this is his post on the subject from the DSI forums

'I'll say this...

We learned a lot on the Tempest optimizing for drum sounds. The new voice will have some relation because we learned a lot, but it will not be the same. The DSP is not optimal for anything more than sample playback, which was fine for drums, but would not be for a synth. We have a lot of ideas building on the Evolver/Prophet lines, so both analog and hybrid options are on the table.

Multitimbral code has been done well in the Tempest and would not be hard to move into future products. This does not necessarily mean there will be a separate MIDI channel and/or individual outputs per voice, although that is an option. The real benefit of the new code is that I have granular control over a different program (or multiple programs) per voice. Think about this in terms of stack/split behavior and other interesting combinations. There's some really cool ideas I have related to this that may or may not make it into the next product, but I have no doubt we'll do at some point.

The sequencer code on the Tempest is something I plan on reusing as the backbone of both sequencers and arpeggiators in future products. There is a tremendous amount of flexibility with this that I've barely scratched the surface of in the Tempest. Swing, duration of notes, the Note FX (param locks), etc, etc. Think of that structure confined to an arp... really, really flexible. If we do a 5 (or more) voice synth it would have a big keyboard, as a keyboardist I find there's little value in having a small keyboard with a polyphonic synth. It's just plain annoying. The OLED is a great compromise between cost and functionality. However any type of visual display changes the way you interact with the instrument; I'm always looking at other options to streamline the workflow. I hate touchscreen interfaces for music as they have no tactile feedback. Until it gets to the point where it's cheap enough to have a dedicated touch screen for specific functions I doubt we'll go in that direction.

Scalable voices on the hardware is something we have talked about. There are pros and cons to this and nothing has been decided.'"

You might remember Pym hinting on something new that turned out to be the Tempest in this post.

Update via Pym on Gearslutz:

"Responses to random parts of this thread...

The Tempest is NOT the Evolver 2.0. That is ridiculous. It has no digital effects. Compared to the Evolver, it's a pretty straightforward synth.

We will not likely make a synth based on the Tempest voice... we made a lot of compromises to optimize it for drums while still being affordable (such as the simple sample playback) and would want a far more flexible architecture for a synth voice.

We love modulation (isn't it obvious?) and the limit of how many we add is only processor power... the Tempest has 8 per voice and it's pretty likely there will be at least that many in any forthcoming synths.

'Analog FM' is not realistically possible with the voice architecture. The first reason (the big one) is that there is a crossover point on the oscillators to go from the lower to upper ranges and the phase of the oscillator is not kept consistent while shifting which would cause really weird artifacts. The second reason is the precision of the Curtis chips is not enough to lock down the oscillator Hz precisely enough to avoid the annoying pulsing you get when doing FM with imprecise signals.

However... if you had a fast enough CV sample rate, you could do FM to the CV signals in the chip. The Tempest, for example, has LFOs that are usable up to the 2kHz range or so. As the chips get more powerful, you should have more range here.

The Tempest has a tweaked filter from the Prophet/Mopho lines which I prefer quite a bit, way more clarity in the high end. However this does lead to people who prefer the dark sound to ALWAYS have the filter on... so it's a give and take. We will probably have the new filter design in new synths but may offer a global switch to change the character of the filter from old to new styles or something like that. Most people won't notice too much of a difference but you know how it is.

I will say that we DO listen to a lot of the common criticisms and have investigated several solutions to many of the problems you guys bring up but I have no firm dates or ideas about when those will be fixed... we are easily distracted by new and cool ideas so often don't put enough energy into fixing the little things. That is changing slowly as we have hired a new hardware engineer who is looking into all sorts of things. This applies to the power supply being internal, the pops on the outputs during power up, and to several other things you guys have mentioned on this thread or others that I really shouldn't comment on because it would give away too much.

How's that for teasing?"

"KISS2012: real time, reel time, sound and Kyma

Sound designers to converge on St Cloud Minnesota for over 24 hours of lecture/demonstrations, 9 hours of hands-on workshops, and 3 nights of live music, cinema and improvisation

CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS, June 26 - The fourth annual Kyma International Sound Symposium (KISS2012) - to take place September 13-16 at St Cloud State University School of the Arts in St Cloud, Minnesota - will include over 24 hours of technical sessions presented by Kyma experts, 9 hours of hands-on labs, and evenings filled with live music and live cinema showcasing some of the most outstanding work created in Kyma this year.

Since the inaugural symposium in Barcelona in 2009, KISS attendees around the world have benefited from the extensive technical training, aesthetic inspiration, and opportunities for collaboration that KISS is known to deliver. This year, more than 100 sound designers, composers, performers, filmmakers, game designers, authors, audio engineers, educators, and students are expected to participate in KISS2012.

"The dual nature of this year's theme - reel time || real time - has attracted an incredibly diverse group of people! It's just a great learning opportunity for everyone involved." - Scott Miller, professor of music composition at St Cloud State University School of the Arts and host of this year's KISS.

Throughout the four-day event, sound designers will be able to explore the latest innovations, features, and capabilities of the Kyma Sound Design Language and learn how to optimize their work flow so they can create amazing new sounds for film, games, music and more. Kyma practitioners are invited to bring their own Sounds to the labs where they can work with Kyma developers and fellow Kyma practitioners to enhance their results.

"One of our passions is to partner with Kyma users to help bring their creations to life. There is no better way to maximize your Kyma skills and discover new collaborative opportunities than by participating in the Kyma International Sound Symposium." - Carla Scaletti, president of Symbolic Sound Corporation, co-host of KISS2012.

If you are obsessed with sound - whether a novice seeking to kickstart your career, an expert looking to take your mastery to the next level, or someone who's simply curious about sound design and Kyma - KISS2012 is your chance to immerse yourself in sound and ideas for four intense and inspiring days and nights.

"Here's a demo of the new reverb features in version 2.0 of "Bagpipes Royale" for the iPad.

Recording is straight from the output jack of the iPad, no external effects, this is what you hear in the headphones.

"Bagpipes Royale" includes four authentic sounding sets of Scottish and Swedish bagpipes.

This is the most realistic to play and best sounding Bagpipes app available anywhere.

Please visit the app website and watch the demonstration video!

The four sets of bagpipes are:

Great Highland Scottish Bagpipes - The most popular Scottish marching pipes, in the traditional key of Bb.

Scottish Border Pipes - A Scottish smallpipe in the key of A with a sound distinctly different from but similar to the Highland pipes.

Scottish Smallpipes - A Scottish smallpipe in the key of A, one octave lower than the Border Pipes, and has a rounder, bubbly sound.

Swedish Säckpipa - A set of Swedish bagpipes in E minor, with a very haunting sound.

All of the instruments use authentic fingerings based on the Highland chanter.

Traveling Through Grain Space

Traveling Through Grain Space from bar|none on Vimeo.

Trying to use the soundplane for something experimental which is basically a surface for traveling through a single long sample, selecting cool points and then being able to play those grains pitch-wise but with the ability to travel as well using the continuous surface.

At points if it gets disorienting, it's like trying to hone in on a radio signal using coarse and fine tuning to discover something.

Soundplane is also responding to pressure as well a x position and relative to where you first touched a pitch. I don't have y connected but I could. Pressure controls volume envelope.

arc|tangent is a new monome arc app I am working on for high resolution control of anything in a generic sense with a lot of options for routing on the fly. Resolutions are variable from highly quantized to pretty much unlimited resolution if you are willing to spin the dial enough times. Visual feedback on the arc helps you understand what is happening. This allows for very high resolution control of scrubbing through a large sample in coarse or fine increments and control of many other parameters at high or low resolution.

The sound source is Monolake - Granulator. I am just controlling it in an unusual way and with finer control than you can do with the M4L patch controls alone.

The sample is a Stretta sample of a bunch of raw takes from a modular session of his. It is totally raw unedited material.

This was a very first rough test. There are so many tweaks you can make to make the control more musical. This is very exciting and fun. Different material yields totally different results and you can approach it in many ways.

I wrote these songs during a difficult time in my life, a period where I was so angry and depressed that I needed to channel my efforts into something positive. I think that in these songs, you can hear my anger, and at the same time, a hint of the healing process, a positive outlook on life, and the ever important need to never stop partying, no matter how bad things may get. This is about leaving it all on the dancefloor.

A quick note for listeners: you should use a stereo system or headphones that can reproduce the sub-bass spectrum effectively. You've been warned.

KORG Polysix & Yamaha Vocaloid Come to Miselu

Malte of Miselu sends in the following news. Pics & video below via Engadget. You might remember Miselu from this post, and this post.

"I wanted to share a few exiting updates with you that we will show live at Google I/O starting today.

Since SXSW the hardware reference design continues to mature, but mainly focused on the software side and have released our music SDK alpha to a select group of developers that used our Miselu emulator environment (alpha for Mac and Linux) to the build apps.

Yamaha has produced a Vocaloid application prototype for the Miselu platform. The app (codename “MV-01”) is produced by music game designer luminary Tetsuya Mizuguchi. Vocaloid is a singing synthesizer technology developed by Yamaha that uses concatenative synthesis to splice and process vocal fragments extracted from human voice samples. Vocaloid allows to create an authentic computer-generated singing voice with text-to-lyics capability. More details.

Korg is bringing a software implementation of their world-renowned synthesizer, the Polysix, to the Miselu platform.

In addition Plasma Sound, the premiere music instrument for Android, was ported to our device. The developer didn’t have access to the hardware and solely used the SDK and emulator.

Retronyms expanded their nStudio suite for Miselu [video of early version here]. Retronym’s cofounder Dan Walton says, 'Miselu has designed something really special. Neiro is much more then a tablet with a piano keyboard attached. For the first time we have a touch based hardware platform dedicated to music. The wide control screen gives this little instrument unlimited potential. Miselu has gone the extra mile to reduce audio latency making this one of the most responsive devices we have seen.'

We are also pleased to announce the addition of Jory Bell as the company’s CTO. Jory was cofounder and CEO of OQO, a San Francisco startup that created the ultra-mobile computing (UMPC). Before Jory was at Apple Computer, where he helped design several laptop models and was responsible for co-inception of the Titanium Powerbook."

The 258 top oscillator output is going into the Korgasmatron III, only using the B side, in bandpass mode, which is being frequency modulated by the A+B output of the Klee.

Splashtop2 is very convenient apps.
The various usage can be invented.
ableton LIVE was controlled this time."

Thought this was a good example of how even though touch control of existing apps designed for the PC seem like a good idea, the UI is important. Too small and it becomes a burden to use. I'm looking forward to the availability of VSTis on the upcoming Surface tablet from Microsoft, but watching this video is just a reminder that the UI does matter.

The Leipzig-k keyboard design brief was simple; design a keyboard in the true spirit of vintage keyboard monosynths. There’s plenty of rack analogues and digital modelling keyboard synths around, but very few new true analogue keyboards. We aimed to design a keyboard monosynth that looked like it has been beemed back from the past. True, it has an LCD to edit the MIDI functions, but why make life hard! Thick wooden end panels and top panel wood and aluminium spun knob-caps add to the effect. Details such as this don’t come cheap, but the added cost of the hardware to get the right hardware was not omitted or the design compromised. I wanted to design a synth that truly looked the part and had all those classic vintage synth details, and no expensive or time has been spared to bring that. The quality of design, workmanship and detailing is all of top quality. The case is rugged 1.2mm steel, thick wood sides, powder coated metal, silk-screened legend, aluminium apped knobs and more.

So Leipzig looks the part, but it sounds good too. Pure analogue throughout. Discrete transistor, resistor, capacitor design. The only ICs are as you would expect; op-amps and transconductance amps. Of course there is digital circuits; the MIDI circuits, but I think you can forgive us for that! It’s somehow comforting to know that if you open up this synth you will see thousands of discrete components and not just some giany DSP chip! If oyu had the knowledge (and were prepared to lose your warranty) then you could open up the synth and circuit-bend it as you wish, disect your way into the sound or CV path.

The Leipzig-k is more than just a Leipzig rack with a keyboard. An extra LFO/VCA has been added. The depth of the LFO is controlled via the Mod Wheel. A headphone output has been added. CV/CV2/Gate inputs and outputs making this an ideal analogue synth controller keyboard."

"This device has three light sensors which control the frequency of three oscillators. The oscillators are internally combined in such a way as to produce the obligatory electronic beeps along with strange and cosmic sounds. An on/off switch is provided and an LED which flashes to indicate the speed of the slowest of the three oscillators.

The wooden case is constructed from the finest old vintage junk and found parts!"

Arp Odyssey MK III

"No need to hype this one; it truly is the pinnacle of mono-synth engineering. Its screaming leads, punchy bass, and squealing resonance are matched tonally only by the Minimoog Model D, yet it dwarfs its rival in features, routing flexibility, and tuning stability. With dual oscillators, lowpass and highpass filters, a comprehensive sample and hold section, a pair of envelopes, frequency and ring modulation functionality, pink and white noise, expansive CV in/out, external audio processing, and comprehensive routing of ADSR, AR, S&H, and LFO sections to both the filter and oscillators, it takes much of the functionality of a modular synth and packs it into a remarkably efficient and user friendly framework. Simply put, this is one brilliant synth!

This one has just been serviced and is fully functional. All sliders and switches have been cleaned, deoxidized, and freshly lubricated. A handful of sliders with dodgy tracks were replaced with high quality synthrestore.co.uk replacements, and all sliders have been fitted with new caps. The keyboard functions well; all notes trigger accurately and the bar has been cleaned and deoxidized. All functions on the Odyssey were calibrated less than a week ago and are at spec. It is clean, quiet, stable, trouble free."

Custom red, white and blue slider caps.

"Up for sale is a very cool Farfisa Soundmaker analog Synthesizer. Fully analog. A very nice and organic sound ..
Sound is somewhere in between the Syntorchestra and the Polychrome. It's a performer synthesizer with mono and poly section. To me it's way more interesting than the Synthorchestra due to all possibilities.
It works let's say for about 60% and needs a fix but it's more than worth it!!
Contacts need a good cleaning. Service manual/schematics are to be found on the Net. It's +30 years old..
Unfortunately also a very heavy machine ..
So shipping will be a bit more expensive..
Collection is always preferred (coffee is ready ;)"
