It is the classic TR 909 paint scheme edition and is of very high quality and increasingly hard to find…especially in its original box! For those of you not familiar with the Xbase, it is a very high quality analog machine that was made in Germany in the mid 1990’s."

"The Kawai SX-240 is an eight voice, fully programmable polyphonic analog synthesizer released in 1984. The SX-240 has a big, wide and full analog sound, courtesy of its two analog DCOs and one sub-osc per voice. You have the options of poly-8, poly-4 and mono modes. In mono mode it is possible to have all 24 oscillators stacked into one for an extremely powerful sound. Leads, basses, brass, drones, pads and strings all have a unique analog sound on the SX-240. Strings and pads get especially warm and fluid when switching on the Ensemble effect, which is just a chorus. The SX-240 also has a function called Brass, which is actually a ring-mod effect.

Modulation possibilities are somewhat limited due to having just one saw wave on DCO1, but with adjustable PW and PWM plus a noise generator, you can find some great sound possibilities. The LFO can be routed everywhere in the DCO, VCF and the VCA. It also has an LFO trigger button to start or stop the LFO on command. The SX-240 uses eight SSM 2044 filter chips which help make up its powerful filter sound. The filter also strangely jumps into self oscillation around the value point of 98 to 99. There are also both portamento and glissando, though it was uncommon to find both of these effects on synths of the time.

This particular unit is in great shape! It has some minor cosmetic wear but is fully functional. All keys, sliders, buttons, etc. work as they should! This synth is so easy to use and also is very tweakable to get the sound you're looking for!

"EnvelopeGenerator on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/EnvGen
My tracks on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/envelopegenerator/sets

My favourite song by my favourite band - I've been meaning to do a cover of this for years! It's a little bit more gritty and industrial than YMO's version.

Super mega awesome thanks to Helen for translating the lyrics - the original song is in Japanese (with a little bit of English), so I figured it might be fun to try it in English (with a little bit of Japanese). Sorry if my pronunciation's terrible, I don't speak any Japanese :P

Also, this is my first video with my fancy-pants new DSLR. Totally abusing shallow depth of field here - give me a break, the song is called "Focus" after all! Completely destroyed my computer though - a 4 minute video took up nearly 500GB of disk space, made my video editing software crash at least 20 times, and caused my computer to overheat and reboot twice.

Oh, and finally - happy belated birthday to Haruomi Hosono!

Introducing soundmachines - a New Modular Manufacturer

This one in via Davide Mancini who has contributed numerous posts to the site: "After a long time considering and planning, I will start, within my electronic development company, a musical instruments brand "soundmachines". We plan to start selling stuff (eurorack modules) at the end of september/early october.
Please have a look at this thread at MuffWiggler, where I introduce stuff and put some teasers on!"

Some of the relevant bits from that thread:

"Dear All,
after having spent 15 years splitting interests at home (not.only.electronic music) and at work (electronics), I decided to re-join those two beautiful fields into one, and so I started writing down business plans and product family projections... My company is already developing and manufacturing electronics (consumer and industrial market, mainly) so, on the operations side, let's assume that we have the 'numbers' to manage such a scenario (high mix, low volumes).

Well, what we will sell ?
Basically we will start with eurorack modules, more on the sound processing, sequencing, performance, specialty side than vco, vca, vcf side (I think that we already have on the market plenty of excellent products in these area). Then we have some interesting designs regarding stand-alone effects, performance oriented controllers and some products related to lighting. We already started the design of a full blown analog polysynth that should be prototyped at the beginning of next year. Don't hold your breath tho', that's a really heavy project, especially for what regards industrialization, manufacturing process and sustainability of production.... There is also in the plans an analog monophonic, complex synth and (to be defined) some kind of analog/digital groovebox.

Obviously, we are just the last one to enter the market, and we will be careful and realistic about what could be done, but nevertheless, we will come!

Last but not least, many of our products will be opensourced, to leverage the people out there that have talent and the love for tinkering with stuff.

The roadmap (two years are already booked!) is dense enough to scary me and all the guys that will work on the development side, but it's really exciting, open, and we hope, innovative.
As of today we are still working on the planning and I don't really have a fixed date to give you, everything is positioned circa 'after the summer', meaning anywhere between the end of September and late November.

Anyway, this is just a 'be prepared' thing, we have about 4 modules coming in the following 4/5 months. Then, later next year, other toys will arrive...

So, I will keep you informed in this very thread, as long as news are coming, including renderings, spec sheets, videos, prototypes etc..

To start, we will setup a very small on line shop. We are still in the definition phase. And we will ship worldwide.

Soundmachines is based in central Italy, ancient home of [/b]many beautiful exercises in synth magic !!!!

Stay tuned, we are coming!!"

followed by:

"I would like to thank you everyone that took his time to read the post!

Just to put some more gasoline on the fire, I will disclose the first modules by their name!
The first wiggler that correctly guesses what each module will actually do will receive one of the prototypes that certainly will be built (please allow some manual soldering or rework here hihi ) before getting the production ready!!!!!!
He will be obliged, tho', to capture at least a couple of vids and upload to youtube for "dissemination" !!! hihi (I think that this is actually a good idea that could be used also for the other modules... yes!)

Ok, there you go:

RB1 Robotto
RC1 RadioStar
CS8 ChromaSeq8
MC1 ModularCommander
DC1 Drumcomputer
SP1 Slicer
CG1 GridConnector"

Followed by:

"Robotto: no it's not a vocoder, nor a cv generator... Robotto is this: [video previously posted here on Dec 13, 2009]

RadioStar A part from being a gratitude nod to the song, no it is not a radio (look at the work of Tom Whitwell, or ADDAC). Let me just leave this here: tablet,smartphone,cv,gate... OK?

ChromaSeq Sorry no Rhodes Chroma love here.. seriously, i just don't get it It's a sequencer.... the fact that it's full of RGB leds it's not for a light show, though....

ModularCommander I think that this one will remain mysterious for another while.. cool

DrumComputer Yes it's a drum sequencer but with a couple of interesting twists... Yes you can drive those beautiful Tiptop drum modules... Patterns, songs, leds!!!!!

Slicer Think about slicing things in the frequency domain, not in the time domain. + more twists.

GridConnector It's not a matrix mixer, it's the last module before the PA or the DAW...."

Analog Synth Universal Linear Power Supply PCB DIY

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"This sale is for (1) Linear Power Supply PCB. The buyer has to source the parts needed and build this unit themselves. This Power Supply is adjustable so you can calibrate the exact voltage you want.

When everything is built you have one clean Regulated Linear power supply capable of 1200mA depending on the transformer used and if you followed the recommended heatsink install.

******Be Aware that this project requires you to work with a Transformer. You will be working with voltages that can be lethal.*****
This Project is recommended for people who have built power supplies already using Mains Transformers, and would like a pro quality PCB.

Here are the specs:

Outputs: -12v, +12v (or you can adjust for 15v format), you get (1) Universal one (terminal block) and a Euro Format 16 pin IDC location.

Inputs: (1) AC center tapped input where you connect the transformer's Secondary. A Fuse is recommended for the Mains line on the Primary of the Transformer.
Daisy chained: (1) AC center tapped pass thru to use for daisy chaining another power supply. Remember this is AC.

Input 5v option: (1) Terminal block to connect a 5v Switching Power supply so that you can supply 5v to digital sources.
Daisey chained: (1) 5v Termainal block so that you can daisy chain the other power supplies and pass the 5v DC line.

I added the option for you to install terminal block connectors on the Regulators to make them easily serviceable/replaceable. There are arrows on the pcb indicating how the terminal block should be installed.

The recommended heatsinks get soldered on the pcb for a solid feel. Once you build this power supply you will see how solid it is.

Here is a link to a mouser Bom
https://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=aecc670cd8

Almost all the parts are on the Mouser Bom, the only part I could not find was the Terminal Blocks. Here is a link of which ones will fit on the pcb:
http://www.taydaelectronics.com/dg301-screw-terminal-block-3-positions-5mm.html

As for the Transformer, it must be Center Tap kind.
I have used this one with great success:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102703

***You will also need 4-40 screws and #4 nuts for the regulators, Heatsink grease is also recommended.

Here are some pictures of the PCB, and an example of one of my builds."

Analogue Systems - rs360 Vocal/Phase Filter Bank

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
You can find video of one posted here.

"Controls:
•Sig In Level (VCF1/2/3) The RS360 has one audio signal input, individual LEVEL controls determine how much of the input signal is fed to each of the filters.

•Frequency (VCF1/2/3) You may control the cut-off frequencies of each of the filters individually using the FREQUENCY controls provided. When a given Frequency knob is in its fully anticlockwise position, the cut-off frequency it controls is approximately 30Hz. As you rotate that knob clockwise, cut-off frequency increases until, it its fully clockwise position, it exceeds 15kHz.

•Resonance (VCF1/2/3) Each filter offers resonance, or ‘Q’, that you control using its RESONANCE knob. In the fully anticlockwise position, Q is approximately zero, and there is no emphasis of the signal at cut-off frequency. As you rotate the knob clockwise, Q increases, whereupon every mode of that filter will accentuate the harmonics that lie close to the cut-off frequency. Increasing Q further, the filters will exhibit ringing, and will severely colour the signals passed through them. If you continue to increase the resonance beyond a certain point, the filter will begin to oscillate, and each mode will produce a sine wave at the cutoff frequency determined by the various controls. This oscillation is produced by all four audio outputs. The exact nature of the wave varies from mode to mode, and you can use these differences to create tonal variations when using the RS360 as an oscillator bank.

•CV-In Vary Depth controls how much the CV-In Vary input influences the cut-off frequency.

•Master Frequency modifies the cut-off frequencies for all three filters simultaneously. This knob and its associated cv input control all three filter cut-off frequencies simultaneously within the range ∞V/oct to approximately 0.4V/Oct. The former of these makes the input invariant to incoming CVs, while the latter makes it oversensitive compared to the CV-IN 1V/OCT input.

Sockets:
•VCF1 CV-In 1V/Oct
VCF2 CV-In 1V/Oct
VCF3 CV-In 1V/Oct You may also control a given cut-off frequency using the associated CV-IN 1V/OCT input. If you apply a CV conforming to the 1V/Oct standard, cut-off frequency will track the CV in exactly the same way as a standard VCO. If the CV is supplied from a keyboard then, in common parlance, the filter tracks the keyboard at 100% and, with the resonance at maximum, you can ‘play’ the filter as if it were a conventional oscillator.

•CV-In Vary modifies the cut-off frequencies for all three filters simultaneously. This socket and its associated DEPTH knob control all three filter cut-off frequencies simultaneously within the range ∞V/oct to approximately 0.4V/Oct. The former of these makes the input invariant to incoming CVs, while the latter makes it oversensitive compared to the CV-IN 1V/OCT input.

•Sig-In audio input, accepts signals in the range ±10V.
•Low Output low-pass filter output
•High Output high-pass filter output
•Notch Output notch filter output
•Band Output band-pass filter output"
