PROJECT PRESET: Twisted Tools S-Layer

YouTube Published on Jul 10, 2012 by Torley

"Torley plays Twisted Tools - S-Layer » http://bit.ly/PKY8HW

▓▒░ OFFICIAL BLURB ░▒▓

S-LAYER is a sample layering sound creation tool that allows you to create, edit and play new sound combinations by taking samples and layering them together using an eight part sampler and an intuitive cell layout.

By combining sounds from the included sample map or your existing sample library, S-LAYER facilitates the discovery of new oneshots, sound effects and loops from pre-existing sample content. Whether you're looking for a new way to create thick drum samples for hip-hop or a massive impact sound effect for game, S-LAYER delivers.

S-Layer is built for Native Instruments Reaktor 5 (Player NOT Supported).

▓▒░ ABOUT PROJECT PRESET ░▒▓

Torley believes an instrument should be awesomely playable from the start, and uses PROJECT PRESET to highlight the craft of instrument + sound designers.

Rules:

1. Never skip a sound within the focused area. (Exceptions include template setups and other "specialty banks".)
2. Play sounds you have never heard before, so your first reactions are documented on camera. (Exception: practice/warmup to gain familiarity with a new tool.)
3. Only feature tools you have or will use in actual productions to set a positive example for the electronic music community. Thinking you can do something is trumped by actually doing it every time.

Atomic Shadow Reviews the EMW-200 & EMW-300 in the Works

via Atomic Shadow where you'll find the full review.

"I have spent several evenings getting to know a powerful little synth called the EMW-200 and I am very pleased to own the first unit off of the assembly line. Serial number 1001. Beta testing is on!

The EMW-200 is a recreation of the venerable ElectroComp EML-200, a rare synth to say the least. Only 150-200 of them were ever made, depending on your source, so let me say at the outset that I cannot speak to how much this little guy sounds like it's big brother. I have never laid eyes on on an EML-200. However the designer of the EMW-200 owns one and I think that he went to some pains to get them as close as possible, while making it an instrument that someone can afford to actually purchase.

The designer, and owner of Electronic Music Works is Paulo Sergio dos Santos. He and his company hail from Brazil and both are dedicated to building great sounding, affordable instruments..." Read the full review along with sound demo on Atomic Shadow here.

I asked EMW about the EML-200 connection and they had the following to say: "In general the EMW-200 can do almost anything that the EML-200 can do but the contrary isn’t true. The circuits are all analog but we redesigned some of them in order to improve some characteristics. As an example, the AD circuit on the EML-200 is very poor, it’s just a capacitor and it does not work very well, so we added some more precise control circuits, resulting on a more usable AD. The free oscillator that controls the AD and the Sample and Hold from the WAVE SHAPPER module also does not work very well, it has a narrow frequency range and a poor width (duty-cycle) control, so we redesigned this oscillator and now it has a wider control range. As I said, the sound is very similar but in general it is a more interesting equipment.

It’s important to say the EMW-200 is intendend to be a tribute to the original not an exact “in every detail” recreation. The result was surprisingly good and I think that will please the analog enthusiast and also who never had an old machine.

The EMW-200 launching price is $1,490.00 [Update: the price has actually been lowered to $1299] and we are planing to build 50 units, perhaps 100." Note an EML-300 is in the works, "We are already working on the EMW-300, an EML-300 recreation with some very interesting improvements."

"The keyboard itself is very strange. It has two sounds, one is a piano and the other is a weird sampled voice going through what sounds like DO RE MI etc but in a foreign language. At least I'm guessing it's sampled - it sounds a lot smoother than any voice synthesis from this era I've heard (Texas Instruments etc) There are two demo modes but these are partially functioning/mixed up."

"This is my Roland Jupiter 80 with the new Version 2.0 installed. I have only had it for a few days and I can honestly say this is the most powerful synth I have owned. I have analogue gear (old stuff from the 80's and new stuff such as the Dave Smith synths) and yes, they are each to their own but I can honestly say this thing sounds amazing! It can sound like the most vintage analogue synth to the best digital synth such as the JD800. So this is just a quick rough demo showing you some sounds of the JP80."

MFB Synth II

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
"Sound wise the MFB-II has a pure analogue signal path (VCO, VCA & VCF) with three VCOs (VCO3 doubles as LFO) and a Moog-type 24 dB/octave lowpass filter, all just like Minimoog and MFB-I. However the MFB-II could Sync VCO2 to VCO1 and VCO3 has PWM. All VCOs have triangle, sawtooth and square waveforms. The pitch of VCO1 & -2 ranges from 4’-16’ and for VCO3 8’-32’, also VCO2 & -3 could be detuned by +/-1 octave.
Compared to MFB-I the VCO3 now operates one octave lower to improve bass sounds. With a shift click VCO2’s & -3’s Interval-knobs doubles as ring modulation adjuster (VCO1*VCO2 and/or VCO2*VCO3). The ring modulation is digital.

Among the most important new features are the two stand alone LFOs which modulate VCO, VCA or VCF. LFO1 offers triangle, sawtooth (falling) and square, while LFO2 triangle, sawtooth (rising) and random (yes!). The LFOs could be set to one-shot mode and work like mini-envelopes, i.e. they only play the waveform once and re-trigger each time you press a key. In the mixer part there is a knob to adjust the level of each VCO, the noise generator and Audio In. If there is nothing connected to the Audio In, the output of VCA is fed back to the filter in a Feedback loop, i.e. you don’t need any cable to do the Minimoog-trick! It is all done internally and the Audio In-knob adjusts the level, very clever little feature.

The filter controls consist of Cutoff (frequency), Emphasis (resonance, will self-oscillate) and Contour (amount). So far it is the same as MFB-I but Manfred Fricke has also added a Key-knob (keyboard follow). The filter envelope (ADSR1) now has a separate knob for Release which was not the case with MFB-I and others like Minimoog and Moog Prodigy. Like you would expect it works just the same with the VCA envelope (ADSR2).

There is three different modulation knobs; MOD.VCO, MOD.VCF, and MOD.VCA, to adjust the modulation intensity. These knobs are bipolar controls with different functions depending on left or right turning from centre. Turn MOD.VCO left and all VCOs will be modulated by LFO, turn right and VCO1 & -2 will be treated by the output of VCO3 (FM!). Left turning MOD.VCF activates LFO and right turn will use the VCO’s much higher rate to modulate the filter (Filter FM). The MOD.VCA chooses between LFO1 (left) and LFO2 (right) for VCA modulation level. The LFO2’s square wave could be set to modulate VCA for some typical tremolo effect.

The MFB-synth II receives keyboard velocity as well as Pitch Bend and Mod-Wheel information over MIDI. Velocity can control VCF and/or VCA. The Step Sequencer sends or receives MIDI Start and Stop (Sync). MFB-II also has a CV In but unfortunately no CV Out. One would wish it was the other way around so it would be possible to use it as a MIDI-CV interface. There is a dedicated knob for Glide control (transition speed)."

Arp Pro Soloist 2701 SN 273863

Pics of the inside below.
"For repair is a ARP Pro Soloist in good cosmetic condition with only very minor oxidation in some places (as seen in pictures). The ARP powers on and makes noise, and all of the "voices" seem to work as well as the octave transpose. However, the problem is that all keys produce the same pitch without variance for each voice. Imagine a guitar fitted with six identical strings, that's sort of what it's like.

This unit was purchased at auction in a rotted out anvil case. The dried out foam substance from the case was stuck to the synthesizer inside and out. The outside has been almost completely cleaned off (you can still see some blue residue in some of the pictures which should come off with further cleaning). Unfortunately, one of the side panels is broken so the stuff got onto the boards inside. I cleaned off what I could get to without removing anything, and as you can see in the pictures, the boards look fine after a simple dusting with a DRY rag.

Cosmetically, the unit is very good. The keys are very clean with virtually no scratches and no sticky keys like those found on almost every synthesizer produced in the 70's. Only one slider cap out of four is left but it is chipped so it's not of much use. I also have the screws for the broken side panel. They appear to just need to be glued in place so that should be an easy fix. The (original?, not sure) music stand is also included. It has to be screwed in place if you ever need to use it."

Yusynth Diode Ladder Filter

via this auction

"The Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF sounds incredible. I love the brassiness you can get with this filter. The voltage control of the resonance is a great feature. Another vintage filter design sweetened by the synth guru Yves Usson. Custom designed Front Panel by Free State FX and engraved by Front Panel Express. The PCB was assembled parallel with the Front Panel which creates a very shallow module and measures less than two inches deep. The Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF is a wonderful addition to every cabinet.

Here is some information about the Diode Ladder Filter from the Yusynth Website:

'Well, here is another classical and very special filter based on the EMS diode ladder filter! This filter has a sound of its own and is the signature of the classical Pink Floyd's song "On the run".

My aim here was to design a quite faithful copy of this mythic filter while using components that minimize the burden of selecting a great number of matched transistors. This is why I used transistor arrays (CA3046, CA3096). However, because the CA3096 has become a rare part and is now overpriced, I have also designed a PCB with discrete trannies to replace it. As for all the other filters of my YUSYNTH project, I have added an input and an output buffer to adapt this filter to the input and output levels of my modular system. I also added an input for voltage control of the resonance : everything was there in the original module but was not made available, probably because of the limited size of the patch pin matrix of the AKS/VCS3... Because, my power supply standard is +15/-15V, I have included a power regulator IC (78L12) to convert +15V to +12V and a single transitor voltage regulator -15V to -9V (I wanted to use a 79L09 but changed my mind when I realized that this voltage regulator is quite a rare part and is difficult to source).' - Yves Usson

The DIY sequencers inside these machines will respond the external 'clock' source and also 'reset' to return the sequence to the first step. So programming various 'click' tracks and 'reset' tracks over midi will enable me to drive / sync / reset / stop & start the DIY sequencers in these machines...............:)
Complex sequences can be programmed with cleaver use of the 'reset' trigger. Watch the pink LED's on the Synth, for a visual indication of how the sequencer is working.

The little yellow Drum machines are Lo-Fi Analog Drum Synths, both very heavily circuit bent & modded. The one on the left has loads of mods, new Amp & Mixer circuits and includes the "Engineers@work MIDI-TRIGGER Converter". The Drum Synth on the right has similar mods, and also contains an integrated Step-Sequencer and a Lo-Fi Space Echo (Basic PT2399 with some minor adaptations).

The Synth is an Awesome AMSTRAD CKX100, and also contains an integrated step-sequencer / Arpeggiator.

"Twisted Tools Releases S-LAYER
New sampler instrument for Native Instruments Reaktor 5 creates playable and unique sound combinations by layering samples.

AVAILABLE FOR $69 @ http://twistedtools.com/shop/reaktor/s-layer

S-LAYER is a sound creation tool that allows you to create, edit and play new sound combinations by taking samples and layering them together using an eight part sampler and an intuitive cell layout.

With S-LAYER, up to eight parts are played back and manipulated simultaneously using an advanced layered sampler engine, where each layer remains independent and can be surgically edited. Time-tested sound design techniques such as reversing, pitching, modulating and mixing sounds together can be quickly achieved by randomizing and fine-tuning with sliders and knobs. In addition to the on-board granular, filter and time-based effects, you can also connect your own effects using the insert/send system or by using the direct outputs. Once you've found a sound combination that you like, you can store it on-the-fly in one of eight 'Scenes' which can be dynamically played backed and controlled using MIDI.

In addition to the included sample library featuring sounds from many renowned sound designers, S-LAYER comes bundled with an iPad Lemur MIDI template by Antonio Blanca and a MIDI template for Native Instruments' Maschine.
