Atomic Shadow Studio Pics & New Website

"Last month the lab experienced upheaval in the form of a major remodel. The ergonomics of the space had left much to be desired. As work began on the Twelve Full Moons album in January of 2011, I needed somewhere to mount the two Hewlett Packard sine wave generators that I planned to use on the album. I had a large metal rack that was sitting in a shed and it was pressed in to service and placed to the left of the desk in the room. Things got out of hand from there and over the next year it grew to four 45 U rack units. More is more!..."

You'll find the full post including more pics at Atomic Shadow's new website. Note the EMW-200 and the Synthesizers.com modular. If you missed it, be sure to check out the EMW-200 review & the EMW-300.

Dude plays Sidrassi & CocoQuantus

video upload by sduck409 on Jul 16, 2012

"On a recent visit to Dude's (Liam Cloyd) domicile, I filmed this brief performance/improv. Sound production is with a Ciat-Lombarde Sidrassi and a Cocoquantus, with some additional enhancements from a 4ms Bend Matrix, Moogerfooger LPF, and a Strymon Blue Sky and El Capistan. Sorry, only crappy mono camera mike audio. Copyright ®2012 Stephen Drake and Liam Cloyd."

I haven't had a post featuring the 4ms Bend Matrix in ages. I'm showing the last one on Aug 3, 2010. Click here and scroll for some posts.

Electro-Music Klee Sequencer - Pronounced "Clay"

via this auction

"Electro-Music Klee Sequencer

Designed by Scott Stites and Assoc.

Assembled by Free State FX

Brand new. Highest quality parts available - no compromises. Artfully hand wired in the 5U MOTM / MOOG Format.

scratches the surface of what the Klee is capable of

Modifications:

Custom LED Colors: This Klee been modified with Bi-Color LEDs so Stage LEDs 9-6 are green when the sequencer is in 2X8 mode. Blue LEDs on Random and Bus 2 Status. Yellow LEDs on Rate and Bus 1 Status. Green LED on Bus 3 Status. Red LED on Main Bus Status.

The Klee is the most feature packed, crazy, beautifully insane sequencer out there. Every option is implemented in this layout. Once you get one the Klee in your rack, you'll wonder how you managed without it. It can function like any other 16 step sequencer out there, or it can function like it has a brain of it's own. Easily programmed with your own ideas, or flip the Random Switch and find out what "it" has in mind. An endless source of inspiration.

This is one BIG build. Save yourself the time, hassle, and inevitable troubleshooting by purchasing this Klee fully and professionally assembled by Free State FX.

The Klee, pronounced Clay, is a shift register based sequencer. What makes the Klee different from most sequencers is that more than one Stage/Step can be active at any given time. Most sequencers have one active Stage, the CV for that Stage is programmed via the pot, and the CV is then sent to the CV Out. With the Klee, one or more stages can be active at one time, the CV programmed by the active Stages is added together, and is then sent to the CV Out.

I could not possibly list all the functions of the Klee here. More inormation about how to use the Klee can be found here:

Chimp playing modular synth

YouTube Published on Jul 16, 2012 by MongoSynth

"So I heard some weird noise in the garage last night. I went in to investigate and found a small chimpanzee playing with my synth. He seemed so happy that I let him continue for a while. Later on I asked him to play some dubstep. He said he was too evolved for that. He was very camera shy so I was unable to a good picture of him."

Quick Note on Auction Posts

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Just a quick heads up. Moving forward, both UK and US auctions will be linked with "via this auction." Germany will continue with via eBay DE. Hopefully this won't be too painful for anyone. I only switched to via eBay UK recently, and with the volume I post it turned out to be a bit more work than expected. Items frequently pop up on eBay US that are actually for sale on eBay UK and vice versa. Checking every single listing adds up. If you are curious about an item, click through and check. It only takes you one click.

This unit has been recently services and calibrated by Ed Miller of synthesizerrepair.com. The unit is in great operational and physical shape (see photos) with some minor scratches commensurate with its age. It is almost 20 years old though and is sold as-is. Here is a video demo of it recorded concurrent with the listing to hear the synth in action" [vid above]

"Here is a very nice E-mu Emulator 2. It looks and works great! Recently serviced including a new disc drive. The top one is still a little moody and works off and on but the bottom disc drive works great! There is one spot where the paint is rubbing off (see pic 3) I may have some extra discs too that I will try and dig up. Here is a list of the service that was done to it.

Clean heads on drives
Replace drive 2
Replace tantalum capacitors on regulators (high failure item)
Clean unit interior
Strip kbd due to a number of bad keys, clean bubble strips and replace 2 strips that could not be saved
Replace 2 jacks with same type as original.
Clean bad switches and restore operation"

Korg Lambda ES 50

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"The Lambda ES50 is a vintage poly-ensemble type synthesizer with slightly editable Preset orchestral sounds. It is divided into two sections: The Percussion set includes Preset pianos, clavis and harmonics; The Ensemble section has Presets for brass, strings, organ and choruses. Filter and envelope controls affect the different instruments individually. The Lambda has 96 discrete envelopes and VCAs - two for each key - a very unusual design. You can mix a Percussive sounds with an Ensemble sound and get a layered effect. There are also vibrato and chorus effects.

The Percussion group and Ensemble group each have their own separate outputs which is nice. A joystick is provided left of the keyboard for simultaneous control of pitch bends and chorus phase speed. The joy stick is broken so it is a little shorter but still work fine. The String sounds are the nicest sounds this synth can create. With three oscillators you can vary and detune them enough to get a nice layered analog string. Piano and Brass sounds are pretty cheesy. The Lambda is cased in a great big wooden case that gives it that authentically vintage status."

Blue TZ VCO Source Confirmed?

Update: Bluelantern has worked things out with Ian Fritz and is no longer banned on the site. This is no longer an issue, however this post will remain for synth history.

Original post:

For the time being Bluelantern's items will no longer be featured on this site. This is a follow-up to the BLUE ZTVCO DRY DEMO & Surrounding Controversy post.

via Ian Fritz on Muffs:

"Here is an illustration of the Blue Lantern Blue VCO, with inked-in sections indicating the correspondence of this circuit to the Teezer Thru-Zero VCO. For the VCO core and sync sections, the two circuits are virtually identical. The only notable difference is the trivial substitution of an LM13700 OTA, along with substitution of low-performance op amps. Otherwise, circuit topology and component values are exactly identical, even down to and including the number and values of all bypass capacitors.

As discussed before, the +/- 5V supplies were taken from Rene's TZ VCO. They consist of three-terminal power supply regulators, rather than the precision reference components of the Teezer. Otherwise, the multiple power supply voltages are derived exactly as in the Teezer. The waveshapers -- external to the core -- are a different design.

Hope this helps clarify matters regarding the Blue Lantern "design". I hate to be still beating on this, but we are still hearing negative comments from the skeptics.

Ian"

Bluelantern is banned on Muffs. I will see if he has any response to this.

Sequentix P3 Midi Step Sequencer

via this auction

This one is cross posted on MATRIXSYNTH-P.

"I am selling a sequential P3 sequencer designed and built by Colin Fraiser. This is one of around 200 that were built as production units. Many of these were built as kits and don't have the build quality that this one has. Worried about solar flares? This unit sports a heavy duty metal case with rack ears. I also have the wooden sides if you you are going for the retro look over the industrial. The LCD is new, original units had a green LCD that burned out. This P3 also has the MEMX expansion but the unit has an older more stable OS. All of the information you need can be found on the sequentix website.

Thy Weapon Cometh

YouTube Published on Jul 16, 2012 by JohnLRice

"Once again, I started testing a new module and was having too much FUN to worry about doing a proper demo! ;-) This time it was a prototype of the new Synth Tech E440 voltage controlled low pass filter. It sounds awesome and I'm sure it will become the go-to weapon-of-choice filter in many people's eurorack modulars!!!

The E440 is used for the fat bass sound and is also multed through a WMD Geiger Counter module for the distorted doubling. (The nasal wailing distorted parts are from a Kazooka run into the mixer with a Digitech harmonizer on the insert.)"

Installing the MIDIPolis Minerva Upgrade on a Roland Juno-60

You might recall from this post MIDIPolis makes the extensive Minerva MIDI upgrade kit for the Roland Jupoter-60 and Jupiter-4. See the post for the specs, a stock photo and audio demo.

XBS wrote in to let us know he has a post up with pics on the installation. Check it out here.

"So, there is soldering with this kit but it’s designed in an ingenious way. The new chip socket is soldered in piggy back fashion to the underside of the Panel Board B processing chip... I put a lot of pictures in the gallery of the socket that holds the new board. It’s got ‘forks’ on one side that literally fit over the solder side tabs for IC 14 on Panel Board B. It took serious care to make sure this was all lined up and seated nicely over all 40 pins. That’s correct, 40 pins worth of tiny cramped soldering."
