Modular Tracks 1 - Tanacetum

Modular Tracks 1 - Tanacetum from Joris Menten on Vimeo.

The first real "track" here. I wanted to do something summery like Roedelius or so. Not sure if it is the Belgium weather but it didn't end up that summery.

No full explanation of the patches this time, but some info:
- main sequence is from the oberkorn: 2 16 note sequences, each played twice, using a clock divider and sequential switch
- these sequences are played by the Livewire AFG through the AMSyths JP6 filter
- then through my Korg PME4: 3 analoge delays+flanger
- baseline is from the 3rd channel of the oberkorn, played by a doepfer VCO through the AS multimode filter
- the "strings" are the could generator controlled by an SQ8 sequencer through the AMSynths JP8 filter (clocked at 1 step for each 16 steps on the oberkorn), through a Boss DD20 delay
- everything is transposed by a second SQ8
- all notes are quantized using 2 doepfer quantizers
This is recorded in one run. Then I added two tracks whit some random noises from a noise source through an AS "EMS" filter, an AS echo module and the korg PME40X pedal board.

The mandolin was not used ...

YouTube Published on Jul 18, 2012 by Airabrab

"I'm just showing a few of the patches stored on my Ensoniq ESQ-1. I realize its a little boring because I'm just sequencing via midi/ableton (can't really play keys well), but he idea is just to check out the sounds. Basic reverb and delay from Ableton are added to make it a little more lush, but no other processing than that. Chopped up a drum loop and threw that at the end. Enjoy!"

"This tutorial looks at the basics of sequencer programming in TC-11. Starting with a non-pitched patch, we insert a sequencer to quantize the frequency to note values. Two approaches are taken: building a specific scale, and using the Add parameter to quickly fly through a note scale. Dirty Electronics Mute Synth - One of 3 Heavily Modded for Auction

"Dirty Electronics Mute Synth
Custom (Warm) Leatherette Mod by A.S.M.O.

The Mute Synth is a hand held touch controlled synthesizer originally commissioned by Mute Records for the Mute Short Circuit weekend at the Roundhouse, London in May 2011. http://mute.com/mute/the-mute-synth

This is one of 3 heavily modified versions built by myself with additional features and controls, the first was built as a commission for Mute Records founder Daniel Miller hence the Leatherette. Daniel asked me to build him one after seeing an earlier modified version I built here.

THIS IS THE LAST ONE I AM SELLING

The Mute Synth features 2 oscillators, feedback and a pulser / sequencer controlled by touch panels and tilt switches, in this modified version all the touch panels are wired to control knobs and switches for stable tuning and accurate control and housed in a wooden case, the front and rear panels are covered in black leatherette.
Added to each of the oscillators and feedback is an LFO (3 in total) for modulation with rate, wave shape and depth controls.

Also added is a voltage controlled (CV input via a 1/4 jack socket on the rear panel) low / band pass filter with resonance and cut off knobs, filter self oscillates at full resonance.

The Mute Synth itself is powered by a coin cell and additional circuitry powered from 9v PP3 battery, compartment in rear panel.

This one is identical to the one built for Daniel Miller except for the weathering patina on the Mute synth and different style knobs.
Pictures of Daniel's mod and control diagram can be viewed on my Blog, Facebook page or on Flickr"

De-Composite @ Time Machine 2012

De-Composite @ Time Machine 2012 from Alex White on Vimeo.

Documentation of video installation at Time Machine, Sydney, July 2012.

De-Composite

De-Composite exploits analog video encoding systems including composite video to produce a video form. These systems were ubiquitous and central to television, video and gaming production and consumption for decades and are now rapidly approaching obsolescence. There is a fluidity and immediacy to directly engaging and interrupting these analog systems and also an opacity of function encouraging a reliance upon cause and effect, trial and error rather than conception and execution.

De-Composite utilises movement and configurations of person(s) within the space of the installation as modulation sources to synthesise a real time generated hybrid analog / digital video projection with stereo audio.

Alex White

Alex has an intense interest in synthesis as applied to audio and video. For more than 10 years he has created his own software based instruments and more recently has begun utilising a modular synthesiser for both audio and video performances and installations. Alex is a co-organiser of Moduluxxx – Modular Synthesis Festival which debuted in 2012, Alex has also co-directed Serial Space, Electrofringe Festival (when it was a festival), Liquid Architecture Sydney and is the founder and project consultant for the Lion Mountain Studio project. Little Boxes is a music box concept for iPad. It consists of a tangible part composed of three separate music boxes that interact with an iPad and an application. When placing one of the boxes on the iPad, it recognizes it and activates. The idea is that each box contains its own universe revealed by the action of the crank with an animation and melody proper to each. The aim is to give a new dimension to the music box, and transcribe visual sensations that don't exist in a standard music box. This work reflects my desire to play with the physical and digital elements by making them interact. It allowed me to embrace different areas, and confront myself with creative and technical challenges. The result is the creation of a world through the music box, where everyone can enter and interact with it.

After buying the unit I bought the training dvd and the first thing it said was there was Midi In so you could play a keyboard into it. When I tried it didn't work. I went online and followed all the links thinking it was user error i.e. ME. But when nothing worked the electronics head engaged and it was time to go electronic fishing and open it up for a little investigation.

This video is how i fixed the problem without spending hundreds of pounds on a Roland repair. Don't even dream of attempting this unless you have a steady hand, have a good quality soldering iron or a father or friend who has the bits.

Music (and Animation) Made with Buttons - by Satellites

YouTube Published on Jul 18, 2012 by kidwithoutradio

Update 7/31: In case you missed it, click the link below for the album. Embed below as well.

Sound:

New song "The Answer" from the new album "Ghost". Release: 7/24/12

Animation:

Each button = one frame in the animation & one sound. As a result, any movement on the screen is a result of each button pressed, and is not simply caused by sound. Each button has it's own unique still picture assigned to it. All together the frames took me over 80 hours to create/design, resulting in a little over 50 seconds of footage.

The new controllers:

-1 32 illuminated game button (UHID) controller custom built by me, controlling the sounds and frames simultaneously.

-1 iPad running Touch OSC, in custom housing used to switch banks of sounds and images.

Software:

Ableton Live (Music), Cell DNA (Animation), junXion (UHID Controller), OSCulator (iPad)

Design:

The album cover for the new "Ghost" record is featured in the animation. The 8 sided star has been used in various cultures throughout the world as a symbol of balance, harmony, and cosmic order. The original star design however has 16 sides, but multiples of 4 are used because of the 4 bar measure & 32 buttons on the controller. This makes it easy to achieve an animation that moves evenly.

Side Note:

Four days before shooting this I stuck a screwdriver through my finger working on an electrical connector. A piece of that connector was lodged in my finger. After my own attempts to cut it out with an Xacto knife, I went to the hospital. They told me that I had to wait 6 days to get the metal piece out. So I said fuck it, and shot this video with that half inch piece of metal in my hand. If you look closely you can see my left index finger isn't doing too much.

*In vein of The Music Made with Buttons Series by Egadz & Edison."

An Unknown Prediction On the Minibrute

This is a bit off an off post, but thought it worth sharing as I got a little kick out of it. I was checking out this brute demo of a vintage PAiA 2700 by Jon Pyre on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge. It reminded me of this video on the Steiner Parker Synthacon. I noticed in the comments of the Synthacon post an anonymous commenter stated: "Looks like something i'd love to see Arturia or Way Out Ware make an emu of..." :) I'm guessing the commenter was referring to a software emulation. Well, Arturia sort of did, but with hardware in the Minibrute which utilizes the Steiner-Parker filter. Of course the rest of the synth has to be factored in and no the Minibrute is not an emulation of the Synthacon, but still, I thought it was kind of interesting. You never know what might happen in time. There are some interesting comments in the post if you want to take a look back in time.

BTW, Doktor Future, are you still out there?

ARP AXXE Vintage Synthesizer with Manual, Patch Sheets & Foot Pedal

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"You are bidding on an early production run, vintage ARP AXXE synthesizer complete with original manual, footswitch and overlay panels.

This synth works properly--all the keys play, and all controls and sliders function correctly. However, due to its age, it is being sold "as is."

A couple quotes from the manual in case you're not familiar with the Axxe:
"The controls on your AXXE have been 'human engineered' to feel right in your hands. Controls are grouped logically and are electrically scaled to respond easily to musical demands. ... The musicians and engineers who are responsible for the AXXE labored over the placement of each control, the color-coding, panel graphics and countless other details."

I can vouch for that. More than 30 years ago, when I bought this I had no idea how to create sounds. The manual and layout of this synth taught me an incredible amount about how to do so, and how to use a synth.

"The AXXE belongs to the class of Variable synthesizers. A variable synthesizer, as opposed to a Preset synthesizer, allows you to shape every aspect of a sound, from the attack and decay to the harmonic structure."

This means that there is no preset for a particular sound. To generate a sound you adjust the controls for a source, filter and amplifier to get the sound you want. (Although the included Owner's Manual and Overlays will give you suggestions--see below.)

This is a working musical instrument, a collector's item and a valuable teaching tool. The early production is distinguished by a knob for pitch bend and by the multi-colored front you see in these pictures. Later models changed the pitch bend to a pressure-sensitive device and then changed the color schemed of the instrument. One big advantage of the pitch bend knob is that it gives you an extra octave at either end of the scale that is not easily set up using a pressure pad.

Please be aware that there is no form of memory storage and external control (predating MIDI) is limited to CV/Gate only. Included in this auction is the original Owner's Manual which talks about sound and music synthesis, the controls on the AXXE, and several pages of suggested settings to obtain specific sounds. The manual even gives instruction on how to slave one AXXE to another should you be collector enough to have more than one! The manual is in good shape, no tears, no liquid damages, just a little to-be-expected wear. Included is a complete set of overlays. These are cardboard flats that fit over the control panel and show suggested settings for desired sound effects. The overlays are in good shape. The worst of the lot is on top in the picture above. All the rest are in better shape.

Also included is the original footswitch which also is in good working order. All in all, this setup is complete except for the original factory box! (Sorry about that.)"

Looks like a little miniature in these pics. See the miniature label at the bottom of this post for more.

Kinektron K-DSC-1 Digital Synth + Sequencer Cubes

"The K-DSC-1 Digital Synth + Sequencer is a self-contained music production machine with unique physical gestural parameter manipulation, a ‘cool lo-fi’ yet feature rich approach, and an interaction\pattern sequencing methodology developed by musicians, engineers, and designers with decades of collective experience performing and recording with sequencing synthesis devices.

While the K-DSC-1 has a familiar sound source, the General MIDI sound set, it is utilized in a new way – providing a ‘simple yet refined’ toolset and sonic results that are valued in the modern genre-bending music performance and production world. Stellar when paired with ‘stomp box’ delay, loop or distortion effects, the K-DSC-1 allows musicians to quickly work up exciting musical sequences with up to 8 parts, chosen from over 128 sounds including an entire drum kit.

The Kinektron Synth Cube System

The Kinektron Cube Synth System is a compact, portable, ‘semi-pro’ music production and sound experimentation kit. In addition to the K-DSC-1 described here, Kinektron will be introducing additional modules on a regular basis – with several currently in development. Upcoming modules include the K-ASC-1 Analog Synth Cube, the K-APM-1 Analog Percussion Module, the K-DSP-1 Digital Signal Processor, and a MIDI interface\audio mixer cube, the K-MAMC-1 MIDI & Audio Mixer Cube. The K-MAMC-1 will allow syncing of Kinektron Synth Cubes with standard MIDI equipment.

K-Konnect ‘Open Protocol’ Interface

At Kinektron, we believe strongly in transparent and open practices as much as possible. For this reason we have developed an Open Protocol, K-Konnect, which is based upon an industry standard device communication protocol. With auto-negotiation, bi-directional, master-less communication, and other great features, this protocol is what connects the various cubes together. We will be providing example code to allow Arduino, Parallax Propeller, and similar micro-devices to interface and communicate with K-Konnect devices.

Tiptop Audio BD808

http://tiptopaudio.com/

"The BD808 is the Roland TR-808's Bass Drum circuit adapted for use in Eurorack format and tuned to sound like a machine that comes fresh off the original 80's assembly line. The adaptation to modular format has allowed us to add some special features like independent Accent levels, a high-powered gain state, dual-input pulse-shaper, and extended decay - all without compromising the signature sound of the TR-808..."
