David C Lovelace & His Better Half Wanders Into The Moog Sound Lab

via David Lovelace on Facebook:

"We actually wandered into this room off the street accidentally. The door was supposed to be locked (there's video surveillance, so don't try it, Asheville interlopers!), but my connection with this company charged the building itself to become self-aware and allow my entry into its secret, twinkling synthmeats."

Dave of course is the author of The Packrat (August 2012 strip below), and he created the MATRIXSYNTH Packrat on the right of this site way back in 2006. Thank you Dave! Be sure to check out his site http://www.umop.com/ for tons more including music, tron keytar, and his lovely mother-in-law.
He also did the unforgettable artwork for a number of Metasonix products.

Update via Dave in the comments:

"Aw, thanks! Lee-Ann and I had a great time there with Jason Daniello, Moog's AR Manager. She showed us around the factory (more pics of that coming today) and basically let me be a 12-year-old in a music store, making a lot of noise and wondering how much of this stuff I'll get to own when I grow up. While I was there I drew a Packrat comic for them on a big 18x30 pad, mounted on an easel, with Sharpies. They took a video of the process which should end up on their YouTube channel or maybe just their website, not sure... anyway here's the best shot I was able to get of that drawing... as is apparent I got pretty hammered on mai tais at Trader Vics in Atlanta the night before..."

"For sale is a rare and vintage Emu Sp1200 original grey model 7030 sampling drum machine. This is the nicest Sp1200 you will EVER FIND. MINTY condition, I couldn't find a single blemish and screen is still bright enough and easy to ready in daylight. Comes with one original disc and even includes the original box (matching SN written on it) with original foam cutouts (box is in ok shape, has a lot of tape on the outside of it). The Sp1200 is a classic with awesome 12bit sound that was used on hundreds of your favorite albums back in the day. Really great sound that I'd take over any of the Akai MPC series, even the 60. It's fully functional condition, all features were tested and working without issue, no bad pads or buttons or bad outputs. I will throw in a couple extra discs containing original Emu sampler library sounds and OS 1.2 (not pictured). Also includes power cable (not pictured)."

Mattson Mini Modular/Divison 6 SQ816 Sequencer Demos

SQ816 running mute by MMModsynth
http://www.mattsonminimodular.com/
http://www.division-6.com/

"Quick demo of the MMM/Division 6, SQ816 sequencer.
Highlighting the running mute. The running mute function kills the main gate when the button (or footswitch) is pressed.
The setup is two CV busses running two independent voice chains.
The B bus is fired from either the main gate or, from taps in the 2,3,5,and 7 stage gate outputs.
When the running mute is pressed, only the B voice chain comes through until the foot swith is released. Then, the main gate kicks in and all stages on both voice chains are triggered.

NOT a pro production. Just a quick recording while testing the system."

SQ816 Ping Pong-Random demo
SQ816 Ping Pong-Random demo by MMModsynth
"Programmed 16 channels in a chromatic major scale from C, up two octaves to C# on stage 16.
Set the C#'s in mute (stage 2 and 9) and left the channel 16 C# active.
Have a "Kick" generated on stages 1 and 11 with a "snare generated on 5 and 13.
Started in forward mode than, switched to Ping-Pong mode. I have SOS mode enabled (Start on Stage) which provides a double hit on the endpoint stages.
The strings are a bit loud but. The point was that it was in Ping-Pong mode while in C, running up and down the scale.
When I transpose to C#, I kick in the random mode.
When switching back to C, I kick it back to Ping-Pong mode. The sequencer re-enters Ping-Pong at the point and direction that it left when launched into Random mode.
Definitely not a pro production but, gets the control point across."

Synth Chick with Moog Liberation

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"Someone recently donated this image, found at the botttom of a box of Moog memorobilia, to us. Can you help us identify this rocker chick?

Here’s what we know: The setting looks like a convention, likely a NAMM show. The keytar is, of course, the first commerically produced portable synthezsizer, the polyphonic Moog Liberation. The year is likely early ’80s, as the Liberation was released by Moog Music, Inc. (Buffalo) in 1980. We also know it’s the eighties by the big hair, big glasses and rockin’ leather pants."

If anyone knows who this is, feel free to comment here or the link above.

Miselu Interview with Korg's Hironori Fukuda

Hironori Fukuda recently ported the KORG Polysix to Miselu featured in this post. You can find the full interview on miselu. On the port:

"How would you describe the experience of porting the application to the Miselu platform?

'Looking back, everything went smoothly. The Miselu platform has already been perfectly customized for synthesizer use with low latency audio playback based on their great MusicSDK. Also, I felt that the display size really works well music apps. For example, it behaves just like the top panel of hardware so designing the user interface was very straightforward. It ended up being a much easier port than I had expected.'"

seqSQUARED: The Analogue Pattern Generator -- Demo #3

YouTube Published on Jul 27, 2012 by hexinverterDOTnet

"seqSQUARED is a do it yourself ("DIY") kit and eurorack assembled module for analog modular synthesis. It will be available shortly in multiple package options:

- Fully assembled and tested Eurorack module
- Eurorack kit (for DIY)
- Universal kit (for DIY)
- Bare PCB + Microcontroller (for DIY)

It takes up to four sequencers' CV and Gate as input and allows you to arrange them into larger patterns up to 32 steps in length. It generates patterns much the same way you would in Fruity Loops or other software, except with analog hardware.

It is a perfect companion to an array of hexinverter.net sympleSEQs!

It works very similarly to the many sequential switches available on the market today, like the Doepfer A-151 or Fonitronik switch, except that it is programmable. Meaning, you can program arbitrary patterns of sequences to make musical arrangements, not just go A, B, C, D, repeat, like with most sequential switches.

This module is meant to FEEL analog. It uses potentiometers and 5mm LEDs, NOT LCDs or menu-driven editing. Because of this analog user interface, it is quite fast and painless to program once you have used it for a few minutes.

Once everything has settled down after pre-orders are shipped, kits and modules will be available in hexinverter.net's online shop as well, at:

http://www.hexinverter.net

Australian folks can purchase a module in-store and online at: http://www.rhythmactive.com.au

BOSS Loop Contest 2012 - Rheyne (live looping with a Boss RC-300)

YouTube Published on Jul 27, 2012 by RheyneMusic

"Submission for the Boss LoopStation World Championship (with a picture-in-picture "pedal cam"). All loops are recorded live through the RC-300.

Equipment used: Boss RC-300, Fender Rhodes, Moog Prodigy, Akai MPD26 triggering a custom kit in NI's Kontakt, MXR Wylde Overdrive (for the Rhodes), two instances of Lemur on two iPads (one for effects, the other for triggering an instance of NI's Massive). All audio is passed through a PreSonus 1818VSL to a Macbook Pro running Ableton Live. Ableton is only being used as a host for NI's Kontakt and Massive, as well as reverb and delay effects controlled by Lemur. There is also an iTouch inside the cover of the iPad with the yellow keyboard, running an app called "iMoov" which is controlling the filter in NI's Massive based on its tilt and rotation."

Mr.AcidMachine Midi to Trigger

via Mr.AcidMachine

"MIDI IN--->17 output pulse jacks with programmable main accent level.

The way it works is simple. Plug MIDI OUT from a computer, sequencer, drum machine, or even a keyboard into the MIDI IN on the MIDI-TO-TRIGGER. Incoming MIDI notes send quick pulses to the output jacks from notes C1 to E2. When MIDI is received on F2 it changes the Accent level of all the output jacks simultaneously. There is a knob to control it's level from normal to full-accent. Connect the output jacks to trigger analog drum circuits, envelope generators, arpeggiators, sample and holds or sequencer clocks. Or use the pulses as audio sources and filter them to get some nice click percussion.

The MIDI OUT actually only serves as a MIDI THRU for connecting other MIDI devices to the MIDI IN.

On power up (9 Volts DC negative center), the MIDI CHANNEL is Channel 1. If the channel button is pressed it changes the MIDI channel to 2, then 3, 4, 5...16, then back to 1 for each press.

These are currently handmade and take 2 to 6 weeks to ship after they are ordered.

Lis10er Binaural Augmented Reality App for iPhone

"Lis10er (Listener) 1.0 is a binaural audio augmented reality iPhone application that creates an 'augmented soundspace', warping and mixing the sounds from the microphone with prerecorded imagined sounds. Lis10er is designed by Matteo Milani and Federico Placidi (aka U.S.O. Project) in collaboration with Tue Haste Andersen.

Lis10er is an application that places the emphasis on the surfaces of the world in which we live. It has been developed keeping in mind the issue of 'environmental lis10ing' in everyday activities, like traveling, walking, reading.

Mixing 'live' sounds and their aural context with designed sounds creates a new 'virtual Place' where the lis10er can immerse himself and develop an active aural consciousness in order to better understand the physical and social context which describe and define our everyday life.

The app interconnects places, everyday situations and sonic awareness.

Lis10er promotes a creative mode of lis10ing."

Karma-Lab releases KARMA Motif Software for the Yamaha Motif XS and XF

KARMA Motif Software Introduction Published on Apr 1, 2012 by karmagician

"Westfield, NJ, July 24, 2012-- Karma-Lab has released KARMA Motif Software, a dedicated PC/Mac program for the Yamaha Motif XS and XF (US $199). This brand-new entry in their line of software applications brings the award-winning and patented KARMA algorithmic music technology (previously only available for Korg workstations) to the Yamaha Motif, giving it new interactive groove generation and arranger-like capabilities.

"After announcing the development of KARMA Motif last year, the release took longer than anticipated," acknowledged KARMA Developer Stephen Kay, "due to a number of factors, from the pain-staking attention applied to the programming of each Performance to the inclusion of additional interactive features beyond the original plan. For example, the Motif's Remote Mode now displays a real-time information stream from the KARMA software directly in the Motif's screen, showing parameters and settings in a way that makes it seem as if the KARMA software is actually inside the Motif."

KARMA Motif also debuts the newest, most advanced, third-generation KARMA 3.0 technology with a host of new features including:

8-track design (6 KARMA Modules, 2 Keyboard Layers) per Performance
Per-track Volumes and Mutes stored in each of the 32 Scenes
Fill Feature - use one or more modules as a melodic or drum fill
Advanced Stutter Feature - rapidly “stutter” the entire groove at different rhythmic resolutions
Master Transpose - play in one key, generate output in another, switchable in real-time
Intelligent Chord Trigger Transposition - control the Motif's arps, hits and SFX
Performance Notes Feature - integrated detailed documentation for each Performance
Remote Control Mode - maps the Motif's Remote Mode to all of KARMA's interactive features
Extensively redesigned Single Window Interface

KARMA Motif's Performances use the Motif's Song/Mixing mode, where each of the 64 songs is a complete, 16 part multi-track KARMA algorithmic music groove. Each Performance features six KARMA Modules, with a left hand and right hand zone for controlling KARMA and soloing on top of it, and eight fully voiced and completely different scenes. The Motif's arps are also integrated in each Performance as additional elements that can be triggered via the Intelligent Chord Trigger Transposition features. And since you are already in Song Mode, you're just one step away from recording your KARMA-fied musical performances into the Motif's sequencer - or you can route the output to any DAW for external sequencing. Furthermore, a KARMA Performance can call up any Motif Voice, Performance, Song, Pattern, or Master slot when loading, so that KARMA can be used in any of the Motif's modes.

A 13 minute Video Introduction has been produced demonstrating many of KARMA's interactive performance capabilities. View it here: http://karma-lab.com/kmo/video

* 32-step-trigger-sequencer
* up to 12 CV- or 12 gate-trigger-outputs
* external sync option
* 16 memory locations

"MFB’s new Step-Sequencer SEQ-02 is the perfect companion to our synthesizer- and DRUM-module range. SEQ-02 is specialized in rhythm- and sequence programming.

SEQ-02 can be used as a sequencer with 6 CV- and 6 gate-outputs. Alternatively, it may also be used with either 12 CV- or 12 gate-/trigger-outputs.

SEQ-02 allows creating 16 sequences with up to 32 steps each. The sequences can be stored and offer 6 or 12 tracks. In addition, an A- and B-part allows building 2-bar-sequences using the A/B-switch.

Use trigger impulses at inputs “Sequence +“ and “Sequence –“ to switch to adjacent sequences.

Start/stop and tempo (clock) can be either controlled directly at the module or remote-controlled through external signals. Of course, SEQ-02’s start/stop and clock can act as a master for other sequencers. The RESET-input allows switching the current sequence back to step 1.

Beyond using SEQ-02 to trigger drums and envelopes, there are countless options for trigger-impulses in a modular environment. These may be used for sample&hold, switches, clock-dividers/sequencers or logic-modules. This allows to create rhythmic events, where usually a straight clock would be used for triggering, e.g. in S&H- or clock-dividing-modules. Thanks to the big number of CV- and trigger-tracks, SEQ-02 will always allow for some extra assignments beside the drum-groove.

The module has a width of 100 mm (20 TE)."
