Audulus Tutorial: Building a Synth from Scratch

Audulus Tutorial: Building a Synth from Scratch from Taylor Holliday on Vimeo.

"In response to a surge in interest, Subatomic Software has released a 20 minute video tutorial showing how to create an original synth from scratch using Audulus, the modular synth app for OS X available on the Mac App Store [App Store link].

Using a node based music creation program, Audulus allows users to build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. All with low latency real-time processing suitable for live performance.

Beginning with a blank canvas on a computer screen, developer and founder W. Taylor Holliday talks viewers through the process of synth creation. He adds oscillators, refines sounds, and adds modulation -- all graphically displayed-- to the point of the synth's completion. In the process he demonstrates some of the new features of Audulus 1.5.

'Newcomers to Audulus should first watch the 'Audulus Briefing' on our home page before clicking on 'tutorials' to view the longer 20 minute video,' suggests Holliday. Entitled 'Building a Synth from Scratch,' the video tutorial can be viewed above or by visiting audulus.com.

Audulus Features include:
Audio Unit hosting - use your favorite plugins.
fluid interface - smooth animated interaction.
MIDI control - use your MIDI control surface or keyboard.
presets - quickly change between settings.
unlimited history - everything you do is stored.
polyphony - process multiple voices.
encapsulation - group nodes into sub-patches.
diverse nodes - from ADSR to ZeroCross.
Audio Unit version - run Audulus as an Audio Unit inside other apps (free download).

Audulus is available on the Mac App store for $29.99. For more information, visit Audulus.com"

"This amazing piece of equipment was assembled on April 25th, 1975, which was within the first few months that Moog began producing them! The serial number is T1217. If I'm not mistaken, the first Taurus ever produced was given serial number T1001. That's vintage! All sliders, pedals, contacts, and five of the seven push buttons are 100% original! Aside from a couple of screws that have been replaced over the years, the only non-original parts of this synth are the push-button relay switches for both the "Taurus" and "Tuba" presets, which were just recently replaced. I can include the original, defective ones, if you so desire. I don't think you'll ever see a Taurus this old that is in this fantastic of condition, unless of course, you're in a museum! Sure there are a few surface marks here and there, but this thing is over 37 years old and built like a tank! No playability issues whatsoever. I recently had this Taurus looked over, cleaned, and serviced by Dean over at 5-Star Engineering in Mesa, AZ. Dean once worked on one of Geddy's Taurus' back in the 70's while working for Wonderland Music in Michigan, so you know this Taurus was in good hands! I have owned this Taurus since 1998 and while I used it occasionally for a RUSH tribute band I was in for a short time, most of its life has been spent in its case on the floor in my bedroom closet..."

YouTube Published on Apr 19, 2012 by JustNickMusic

"As much an instrument as an effect, this box can do amazing things with LFO modulation of amplitude or of a bandpass filter. Wonderful conventional tremolos, super-intense chops and resonances. Particularly magical in its interaction with a cranked amp."

via this auction

"The Gristleizer is an analog synthesizer effect unit for use with all types of instruments and signals. The versatile LFO can modulate signals, and with the other controls can offer an incredible variety of sonic possibilities. From filter effects in VCF mode to unique tremolo and ring modulation like sounds in VCA mode that range from subtle to unrecognizable. The Gristleizer is the legendary effect used extensively in the music of Throbbing Gristle by electronic music visionary, Chris Carter who adapted the circuit from a design by Roy Gwinn and built them for Throbbing Gristle."

FEATURES
LFO WAVEFORM SELECT: 4 Waveforms to modulate your signal in VCA or VCF mode
FREQ: Controls the frequency of the LFO from .25Hz (1 cycle in 4 seconds) to 100Hz
DEPTH: Controls the level of the LFO modulation applied to the signal
BIAS: Controls the intensity and grit of the modulation on your signal in VCA mode an in VCF mode, shifts the center frequency of the band pass filter
LEVEL: Controls the output level of the effect, capable of line level signals
LED: Visually indicates the frequency of the LFO
MODE FOOTSWITCH: Selects either VCA or VCF mode for amplitude modulation in VCA, or filter modulation in VCF mode
BYPASS FOOTSWITCH: Turns the effect on and off
INPUT: Accepts low level (instrument) to line level signals for greater flexibility
OUTPUT: Drives low lovel to line level inputs depending on level control"

"Bassist from the Long Winters, Eric Corson, talks bass pedals. Specifically, the Crumar CPB-2. He references John Vanderslice's drummer and the inevitable Geddy Lee."

via this auction

"Up for sale/auction is a rare, vintage analog bass pedal synthesizer, the CPB-2, made in Italy in the early 1980's. The label on its side says, "Manufactured for Music Technology, Inc. by Elettronica", and was built in a joint venture by Italian synthesizer manufacturer, Crumar and it is very much like a Moog Taurus - only much cheaper. I picked this up last year when I joined a new band, but other then sampling a few sounds this has sat unused and thus needs to go. This synth is in good but not perfect working order. The controller pots are all a bit on the scratchy side and if you're looking for an analog synth you can change sounds on the fly with, you might have to clean or replace a couple pots (most the 'tune' one is the scratchiest.) Everything else works mint and this puppy sounds very FAT when in doubled mode (plus it's got that cool resonance only an analog synth has.)"

Eko Synth P15 vintage Italian analogue synthesizer demo

Eko Synth P15 vintage Italian analogue synthesizer demo (no talking), HD

YouTube Uploaded by RobsSynths on Jan 10, 2012

"Complete and in depth video demonstration to what this synthesizer can do.
First I show you the presets,
LFO section (1:15),
VCF (4:14
VCA (6:29).
I then take you through some sounds it makes (7:19) and then with an added delay effect (12:28).

Built 1979
Uses basic electrical components. No Chips. Proper analogue.
It has two basic envelopes - one for VCF and one for VCA.
One LFO which can modulate VCO, VCF and VCA. It can go very fast.
Filter is really nice and fat and can self oscillate.
Has a choice of wave shapes using the presets but then you can change the rest of the sound yourself.

Intro music made just from this synth.

I look at the oscillators, filter and LFO then play with the sounds.
Its a dual oscillator real analogue monosynth and its very fat when it wants to be.
Don't expect any musical masterpiece in this video. I am simply demonstrating the sound and feel of it
No talking and no guides. You can see whats going on clearly.
Recorded in high quality but please excuse the harmonics when the resonance goes too high. Its very powerful on this synth and the sound card didnt like it.
If you like this kind of thing look at my other videos.
Hope this helps

"This is a home-made computer-based FFT Spectrum Analyzer that I made for my studio. It's built into a 1u rack cabinet, the hardware is based on a MINI-ITX industrial mother board with a 1 Gb Disk On Module (SSD) running Windows EMBEDDED, a special version of Windows especially made for running just one task, exactly like industrial machineries and medical appliances. It has a write protections, boots up automatically when you give it power and doesn't need a mouse or a keyboard to turn off, just pull the plug.

The FFT display shows the R+L sum with peaks and average amplitude in a range from 20 to 20 K Hz. The whole system was assembled and pre-configured for doing just what it has to do. Hook it up and hang the display on your wall and you're done.

I made it for my studio because I think it's important to "see the audio", because it often happens that you hear things that are not there or there are things that you can't hear. Having a good pair of speakers and an FFT helps to make a better mix."

YouTube Published on Jul 30, 2012 by rezfilter

"Here's a quick video demonstrating an 8-step sequence using the Analogue Solutions Oberkorn analogue sequencer. Sequence reset is triggered via Gate X out.

Bass provided by the new Telemark-K keyboard while the filter is opened and closed by Oberkorn. Transposition is done via the TM-K (keys).

AS Quantiser also featured between the Oberkorn and TM-K.

Enjoy."
