BZZZ! The sound of electricity - Performance & Installation

BZZZ! the sound of electricity - Performance from cecilebabiole on Vimeo.

Performance by Cécile Babiole and Quentin Aurat - Plateforme Paris 1st June 2012
"BZZZ! the sound of electricity" is a sound sculpture by Cécile Babiole.
Exhibition at Plateforme-Paris, June 2012

By reinventing an obsolete low-tech sound wave generator in this all-digital age, "Bzzz !" serves as a commentary on the history of technology and a tribute to unprocessed, unsampled analog sound : in a word, the raw sound of electricity.

The set : 6 micro-controlers, 6 resistors scales, 12 small PA et 24 small loudspeakers.

On the night of the opening of the exhibition, Cécile Babiole and Quentin Aurat played the sound sculture as a music instrument.

rezfilter's 8-Step Sequence Wins Vacoloco GorF Contest

You might remember the contest from this post. It looks like rezfilter won with his "An 8-Step Sequence: Analogue Solutions Oberkorn & Telemark-K (Keyboard)" posted above and previously here.

via Vacoloco on Facebook: "The "win a gorf" competition has been extremely hard to judge, but sadly there can only be one Winner. In the case I've chosen Jason Subtractive's entry (below). Thank you again to all those entered, I can safely say that judging this competition was considerably harder than I was ever expecting. The quality of entries was just outstanding."

EMS Synthi For Sale

Uploaded by mcabaret2007 on Nov 21, 2008

"Roi from Mechanical Cabaret, improvising on an EMS Synthi A synthesizer during a recording session for the new Mechanical Cabaret album called 'Damaged Goods'."

via this auction
"Essentially the same instrument as the legendary EMS VCS3, and sometimes known as the ‘Portabella’, the Synthi A is a self-contained, analogue modular synthesizer system, literally built into its own (genuine!) Spartanite attache briefcase! This is a very rare original working example of one of the most revered, fantastic, and ultra portable synthesizers ever made.

Firstly, there’s a little bit of background information on this which might possibly help me in my quest to sell it: this particular Synthi A was originally a end of tour gift to Mike Hall, Erasure’s keyboard roadie, in 1992 – he is still the current owner, and I am now selling this on his behalf, sold as seen.

I’m sure that most people looking at this listing know all too well what a wondrous thing it is that I’m selling here, and perhaps are aware of how incredibly rare it is to find a genuine, working example of a Synthi A these days. There's absolutely tons of info around on this machine, which is easy enough to come across on the web via a well placed Google search or two, so there’s no point in me lazily copying/pasting or just replicating any of that... Here’s a video of me playing around with the actual Synthi A I’m selling here..." [above]

Cosmetic condition is also excellent, with all original silkscreening in like new condition. A few minor scratches on the metal end panels but nothing remotely serious.

The pictures tell the tale of this gorgeous work of art/musical instrument. The serial number is 272XXX so it has the stable 14 bit DACs and the bright LEDs. It was retrofitted with the DCB port and the auction includes the MD-8 DCB to MIDI converter."

Tutorial / Overview on the Serge Universal Slope Generator

SergeUSGvid1 Aug0612

YouTube Published on Aug 6, 2012 by Richarius Molindarius

"This may or may not be, the 1st and only video that I'm uploading, showing off the Serge Universal Slope Generator and some of the 14 functions that it can do. :) (I know I uploaded another almost a year ago.) There are a few functions that I barely touched in this one and others that I didn't at all, but the first couple of functions I went into a little bit of detail ... hence the 22 minute length of this bloody video! :o Lol.
If you're a DIY modular builder - get yourself online and order yourself up some of the PCB that makes these guys! For the USG - 2 of them on a single PCB for $30! Parts on top of that? Another $20-30 maybe? http://www.cgs.synth.net/ be the place. Full authorization from Mr. Serge Tcherepnin for Ken Stone to provide these as well as a few other Serge PCBs. I don't know of any other place where you can get these top notch quality boards legally, for any cheaper. :)

Hope you enjoy. Lemme know if you'd like to see more of it / etc. / yada yada / more of those fancy words. :)"

Make Noise's Tony Rolando on the Dual Prismatic Oscillator

via TRASH_AUDIO where you'll find the full interview post. Excerpts:

"I’ve wanted to do an analog oscillator for a while now, but there never seemed to be a good time. Fall 2011 I just said to hell with good timing… I’ve spent a great deal of time with the MiniMoog Voyager oscillators, Harvestman Hertz Donut and Buchla 261e, which were my all time favorite VCOs, each for different reasons. I chose to use the vintage 259 as a starting point for the layout of the panel controls; I had an immediate vision for how such a layout could translate into the euro format. Originally one of the VCOs in my design was Sawtooth core, in order to achieve the hard sync sound that I wanted from the Minimoog Voyager; later I was able to achieve a hard sync sound with a triangle core, so I decided to use triangle core for both oscillators allowing for the nice SINE shape on both...

I’m trying to move away from the idea of “Primary/ Principle,” “Modulator/ Carrier,” and etc… by allowing for complex timbres to be created with BOTH of the VCOs in the module, another element of the Moog Voyager design that I’ve always appreciated. VCO A has a Hard Sync circuit that when combined with FM (from VCO B) will melt your face. VCO B has the wave-shaping and folding circuits that morph the basic SINE into other, more harmonically complex waveforms...

The only thing that I would have liked to include will end up being offered as an expansion, and that is the Animated Mix Engine. It takes 6 waveforms generated by the DPO and allows for dynamic mixing of them using gates, triggers, pulses, clocks and control voltages."

Update: corrected the title of the post from Tony Orlando, to Tony Rolando. Sorry Tony! Although it would be cool to see some Make Noise in Vegas! :)

Minimoog Model D SN 1408

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This Minimoog Model D has been in my smoke-free studio for 17 years. The walnut case shows some wear, as you can see in the photos, on the front corners. You can also see in the photo of the mod wheel panel that the plastic is slightly bubbled at the bottom corners. I've also included a photo of the AC cord connection on the top/back panel, which is slightly frayed. Finally, the keys do not align perfectly, which is typical for Minimoogs. With the flaws now admitted, here's the good stuff about this instrument.

I've used it in numerous recordings and occasional performances and lecture/demonstrations, and this Minimoog has been sturdy and reliable, and the sound is what you expect -- fat and crisp across the many octaves at its disposal. Use that built-in A-440!

The serial number is 4408, or possibly 4468 -- as you can see from the photo, it's hard to tell. Either way, it's one of the older Minimoogs, built in Williamsville, NY. Everything works well on the instrument, and the oscillators are easy to calibrate when needed, which is not often. Plug it in, let it warm up, connect to a good sound system (it will destroy small speakers!), and that Moog sound comes out. This instrument will be professionally packed with great care on the first business day after the auction closes."

"I ran the unit in test mode, and it seems like voice chips number 3, 4 and 6 is not working properly, with voice chip number 2 having hanging note. Also in filter test, voice chips number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 weren't making sound.

Another issue with this is that the bender seems a little bit loose, and LFO Trig bend is not working. However its working fine on sideways bend ( DCO & VCF).

Everything else should be working well to the best of my knowledge, all the keys and buttons and sliders, as well as preset memories and writing function working fine."

"Up for sale is the popular Yamaha CS-10 monophonic analog synthesizer.

The unit seems to be fully functional to the best of my knowledge, all the keys and knobs and sliders worked fine when I tested accordingly to the owner's manual. There maybe slight scratch noise on the knobs, but could do with some simple cleaning/adjusting.

Cosmetically the unit is in a nice condition as you can see from the pictures. There are some minor ware and marks here and there, but nothing major. In a great cosmetic condition if you consider its age."

FRONTLINE X-2 (DRUMFIRE DF-2000)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Offered for sale is this great Frontline X-2 Dual Drum Synth (also sold as the Drumfire DF-2000 in the USA) in perfect working order and excellent cosmetic condition (see detailed photos below).

We've had one of these in the studio for many years - a perfect companion to our 808 and Pearl Syncussion - it's capable of some monstrous subby kick and bass sounds, as well as a whole range of bleeps, bloops, whomps and crashes (and of course the inevitable disco toms).

This Japanese-made true analogue drum synth is a well-kept secret and couldn't be easier to use both live and in the studio: the front trigger buttons make it perfect for soundsystems wanting the ultimate Jah Shaka dub siren effects and much more besides (we also have a pair of Frontline Analogue delay units for sale - get in touch if interested).

As well as dub, the X2 can produce a wide range of other sounds, from tight and snappy 808 snare sounds to 70′s disco toms. Both Jah Shaka and Oliver Lieb have used these machines.

The X2 can be triggered by almost any audio input signal, from the buttons on the front, a snare running from your software sequencer, a piezo trigger or even a microphone.
There are two identical channels containing:

Manual trigger button
Sensitivity control
Oscillate decay1
Oscillator decay 2
Noise decay
Sweep
Pitch
Wave form shape
Click on/off control
Noise filter
Osc/noise balance
Master volume
Audio On Off
Pre-set or manual switch

It's in perfect working order - all pots move smoothly and noiselessly and function exactly as they should - it is a joy to play and program.

(It is always possible with vintage equipment that some crackly pots/sliders may develop over time when equipment has not been used - even during shipping - this can usually be easily rectified either by use or with a bit of switch-cleaning spray).

It has a few minor scuffs and scratches to the casing, but overall is in good clean condition.

I've not found any clips online that do it justice so have uploaded a demo to Soundcloud (see start of listing). [embed below]

It is a UK 240v model: the plug will be removed before shipping unless the buyer requests otherwise (except 110v countries where a step-up transformer will be required - not included in sale)."

Mutronics Mutator SN 322M

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Offered for sale is this Mutronics Mutator in perfect working order and immaculate cosmetic condition (see detailed photos below).

Probably the most musical and involving filter unit ever - you know what this sounds like, but until you've played with one you don't realise how great it sounds... Deep, deep subs; Mutron-style envelopes; can turn almost any sound into music; makes a soft synth hard; so much fun to be had...

These are highly sought-after units, getting harder to find - a true future classic.

It is 240V mains powered - buyers in the USA/Canada will require a step-up transformer for this to function with 110v mains power - the UK plug will be removed for shipping to overseas countries with 240v supply unless otherwise requested."

Roland TR-808 SN 083305

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Offered for sale is this excellent Roland TR-808 in good cosmetic condition and excellent working order - inspected and PAT-tested for electrical safety.
Whilst it is not in mint condition, it does look very well indeed and will add a real touch of class to any studio.

As can be expected with a machine that's around 30 years old, there are plenty of light scuffs and scratches to the paintwork as well as a few dings and scratches to the plastic end cheeks: please see over 50 photos below - all marks and scratches are detailed towards the end of the photos - there are no unpleasant surprises for our buyers.

The previous owner told us he'd had it serviced over a year ago, and our inspections bear this out. It has been checked over by James Walker at Synth Repair - he replaced the On/Off switch and PAT-tested the 808 for electrical safety this was after the photos were taken - the PAT test sticker is affixed next to the serial number plate on the underside. It is in excellent working order - all pots move smoothly and noiselessly and all pots, switches and knobs function exactly as they should - it is a joy to play and program. Internally it is very clean and there's no evidence of any past leakage in the battery compartment.

(It is always possible with vintage equipment that crackly pots/sliders may develop over time when equipment has not been used - even during shipping - this can usually be easily rectified either by a few turns or in extreme cases, with suitable switch-cleaning spray).

We've recently sold another two excellent 808s to satisfied customers (see feedback below) so buy with confidence.

It is a UK 240v model: the plug will be removed before shipping unless the buyer requests otherwise (except 110v countries where a step-up transformer will be required - not included in sale)."

ROLAND TB-303 Bass Line + case + PSU SN 242000

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"Offered for sale is this amazing Roland TB-303 in original condition, together with original carry case and (for UK buyers) a Roland power supply.

It has just been serviced by James Walker at Synth Repair Services, is in perfect working order and sounds amazing. The front panel is in excellent condition (please see 31 detailed photos below): there are some marks to the paintwork - especially to the rear panel where some of the original finish has been lost, but overall this is in exceptional condition.

The service comprised of replacing the tact switches; replacement of the mini and 1/4" jack sockets and the DC input socket; re-calibration. No other internal parts were replaced - all transistors and pots are original so it sounds exactly as it should.

We also have an as-new Phillip Rees MDS Midi-Sync24 Converter which can be used to trigger the 303's patterns via Midi; please get in touch if you wish to purchase this alongside the 303.

It is in perfect working order - all pots move smoothly and noiselessly and all pots, switches and knobs function exactly as they should - it is a joy to play and program. Internally it is very clean and there's no evidence of any past leakage in the battery compartment.

(It is always possible with vintage equipment that crackly pots/sliders may develop over time when equipment has not been used - even during shipping - this can usually be easily rectified either by a few turns or in extreme cases, with suitable switch-cleaning spray)."

Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool Bringing Synthesis to Kids

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"The data is in! We have completed our first year of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, including analysis of the program’s effectiveness. The entire process of curriculum development through data analysis has been incredibly rewarding, with an amazing team working together to realize the goal of the Bob Moog Foundation: to educate and inspire children through the power and possibilities of electronic music and the intersection of music, science and innovation...

Student Lessons – We developed ten lessons for students that were designed to meet state and national standards for science education in the second grade. One of the themes in these lessons was the idea of a sound wave as a wiggle, a concept meant to encourage creative and playful engagement with science. We wanted students to learn about these sound wave wiggles by creating chains of sound with cards, by acting like air molecules in sound waves, by viewing sound waves on oscilloscopes, and of course by playing the theremin."
