chris randall - barthes (second return)

YouTube Published on Aug 19, 2012 by Cranda11

"Another Sunday jam, continuing my "old-skool IDM" phase, apparently. This one has a drum loop sliced in the Maschine as the main sound component, along with simple little synth lines from MeeBlip and AniMoog (in order of appearance.) The bass is coming from Massive.

When you see me peck that little Akai MIDI controller occasionally, I'm triggering Audio Damage Replicant's MIDI slicing features, and I have the knobs on the Akai mapped to the two filter frequencies and the "Reverse Random" slider. The only other effects are the Roland RE-201 Space Echo (on the two synth lines) and the Eventide Space (on various other things, for texture.)"

Homebrew Acidline Step Sequencer

Stepper demo

YouTube Published on Aug 19, 2012 by TransistorSounds

"Here's a rough demo of a homebrew acidline step sequencer that my partner Nina and myself have been building here at Transistor Sounds Labs. It uses an Arduino board and a DAC (plus a lot of C programming) to generate CV, gate and accent signals to send to a synthesiser, such as the Doepfer A-100 used in this demo. It's at a pretty early stage of development, but will eventually be a fully self contained sequencer that you can program without a computer."

"For sale is the very rare Unique DBE rack-mount analog synthesizer. Per research, it was sold overseas as the Crumar Bit 1 (or Bit 01). It was manufactured by Crumar in Italy in around 1985. The unit is in great operational and physical shape (see photos) with some minor scratches commensurate with its age. It has been carefully stored for around 20 years in a climate controlled studio..."

"For sale is a vintage Moog 1130 Drum Controller. Play your analog synth with a drum! This unit is in nice operational and physical shape (see photos) with some minor scratches commensurate with its age. It has been carefully stored with minimal use for around 20 years in a climate controlled studio.

The Moog 1130 Drum Controller allows drummers or percussionists to dynamically trigger various Moog synthesizers including the Minimoog, Moog Modular, Micromoog, etc. The controller incorporates a true drum head that can be played with drumsticks or hands. Here are some features:

Two control functions marked "scale" and "sensitivity" to allow for dynamic control of the analog synthesizer
Standard drum attachment for mounting on a drum stand
Extension cable for interfacing with an analog synthesizer (I believe it can be modified to work on"

But all faders could be moved by using your fingertips, a few of them crackle. But: all sounds and keys are working fine, no dead keys !!! delicious strings and amazing 70s analogue pianos ! looks very used but sounds great."

via this auction

"For sale is an extremely rare Simmons MTM MIDI-Trigger-MIDI Signal Processor. Sync analog sequencers to MIDI! Control the SDS5!

The MTM was originally designed to control the SDS5 and SDS7 drum sound modules via MIDI or a sequencer. The unit has a number of great uses:

Control any sound source with a trigger-in from MIDI (Simmons SDS5, SDS7, other drum machines, even analog synthesizers)
Use the MIDI to trigger function to sync analog sequencers to MIDI & trigger various sequencer steps
Trigger MIDI devices from any audio source such as acoustic drums

Each signal can even be assigned to more than one MIDI note so whole cords could be triggered from a trigger source. All settings can be saved in one of up to 99 kits, just like the SDS7. The first 16 can be selected by the selector pad.

The unit is in great operational and physical shape (see photos) with some minor scratches commensurate with its age. It has been carefully stored for around 20 years in a climate controlled studio."

"Here is a breakdown of things I did to this particular synth:

- Cleaned out foam, removed and cleaned switches/sliders, replaced sliders if necessary
- Replaced all slider caps/knobs with new ones.
- Cleaned all keys and key contacts.
- Replaced power, output, and contour capacitors
- Replaced two frequency dividers with more reliable CMOS based chips.
- Replaced headphone/output amplifier
- Removed RCA jacks and replaced with 1/4" audio out, audio in to VCF, and VCF CV in. One is unused as of now.
- Added two switches for 4 LFO speeds: 1/4, Original, 1/2, and a Hyper speed.
- Added switch to disengage Tone Source 1 from the LFO for sync effects
- Octave switch to give an extra lower octave for Tone source one. -3, -2, -1, and 0 possible.
- Switch to send envelope voltage to Tone Source 2 for sync sweep or pitch swoops with a potentiometer for adjustment.
- Switch for a frequency modulation effect for Tone Source 1/2 and potentiometer for adjustment.

The only cosmetic issues are slightly less shiny switches and a crack in the main label that goes from contour section to filter section. You should be able to see this in the photos. Here is a very general video of the various effects you can do with these mods and to show full functionality. About the only things lacking from a Moog Rogue are pitch bend and mod wheels. I will be posting this on Austin Craigslist as well..."

Buchla - Three Layers to Ponder

YouTube Published on Aug 18, 2012 by djangosfire

"Buchla one take improv using 3x patch layers.

The 112 Touch Controlled Voltage Source is being used to both transpose the 5-note mini sequence, as well as the delay feedback amount. So you'll notice differnt levels of synced delay feedback as I play different keys - many of which are tuned to unison pitches . . . and not in perfect tune - this allows for creepy, slight doppler shift note repeats."

Early DIY Synthesizer

flickr By doryfour

This one is from the Museum of Making Music according to the flickr set this came from. If anyone has more info on it feel free to comment.

Update: some additional info in via Suit & Tie Guy who checked on a Hamtech list. Here's what he got back from a couple of people: "That is Don Lewis' LEO (Live Electronic Orchestra). AFAIK, it still is at the NAMM Museum. Lewis gigged with it regularly in the day. Great organ player. Never heard him play it, but he probably played the snot out of it. Don't know if he recorded with it. Very little of it is X-66. Those are Concord drawbars and other parts, plus lots of stuff from ARP and Roland and more. This is a fairly well known instrument, so I'm disappointed to see that no one could do research."

And:

"It is still there, he had a little gig a couple of years ago to celebrate its 30th and Hammond's 70th (if I remember the occasion correctly). And he most certainly recorded! You can buy it on iTunes or from Don's web site.

http://lewisizerpresents.com/leo.html

Don and my grandma were two peas in a pod, they put on seminars here in Denver for teachers over the years. I was honored to have gotten a nice note from Don after she passed. He's a wonderful guy. And a heckuva engineer!"
