Atomic Shadow - I Sleep On Magnets - Excerpt

"This is the introduction to a much longer piece from the next album. This is an exploration of how we relate to our machines and gadgets in an emotional way. In the course of the piece software and modular equipment was used to process field recordings. The EMW-200, STG Sea Devil filter, DotCom modules, and Krisp1 ring mod are featured, as well as the usual collection of dusty vintage lab gear, effects and even a couple of iPad apps."

Bob Moog Foundation and macProVideo.com Launch Courses on Synthesis

"BOB MOOG FOUNDATION AND MACPROVIDEO.COM PARTNER TO BRING MOOOGMENTUM ALIVE THROUGH SYNTHESIS EDUCATION

(Vancouver, BC/Asheville, NC) - The Bob Moog Foundation and macProvideo have joined forces to create a series of six new audio synthesis courses for music producers. Called “The Foundation of Synthesis with Marc Doty,” these new courses take viewers step-by-step through the process of sound synthesis using a collection of vintage and contemporary synthesizers including ARP, Yamaha and, of course, Moog.

The Bob Moog Foundation (BMF) honors the legacy of its namesake pioneer through igniting creativity at the intersection of music, science, history, and innovation. With education at the core of its mission, the Foundation found a synergistic partner in macProVideo.com, an online education community whose core commitments parallel those of the Foundation.

Says Michelle Moog-Koussa, the Foundation's Executive Director, 'This partnership with macProVideo allows us to educate tens of thousands of curious sonic explorers via macProVideo's vast subscriber base. Through this series of comprehensive online synthesis courses, totaling over seven hours of information, Marc Doty (BMF Education Specialist) brings the very essence of Bobʼs technical legacy to light with a clarity and ease of understanding that is rare to the genre.'

According to Steve Horelick, a master synthesist in his own right and the composer that scored every episode of PBS's "Reading Rainbow" television show, "as Publisher for macProVideo.com and AskVideo.com it is an honor to be working hand-in-hand with the Bob Moog Foundation and their resident synthesist guru, Marc Doty, to bring this informative series on analog synthesis to our members."

Go to http://www.macprovideo.com/moog to learn more about “The Foundation of Synthesis” courses.

Synthesist Erik Norlander also makes a guest appearance in the videos with his 22 oscillator modular Moog synthesizer.

macProVideo.com is an online education community training on the worldʼs leading audio, video and graphic software through HD video-tutorial course.

The Bob Moog Foundation’s mission is to carry Bob's pioneering legacy forward through igniting creativity at the intersection of music, science, history and innovation. (www.bobmoogfoundation.org)"

Introducing The Pianocade - Chiptune Synthesizer and MIDI Controller

"The Pianocade is a synthesizer and MIDI controller designed to capture the look, feel, and sound of retro video games. The user interface is made out of arcade parts and the custom-designed, open-source synthesis engine emulates the sound hardware of vintage arcade cabinets and consoles."

Roland Kuit's Laboratory of Patching Now Available

First posted here, Roland Kuit's Laboratory of Patching is now available. Click on the E BOOKS link when you get there. Also check out the MASTERCLASSES link for direct one on one training with Roland.

"Laboratory of Patching combines the upgraded and extended interactive eBooks SoundLab I and SoundLab II bundled as one Big Modular Knowledge Lab with over 1700 patches. Equal parts tutorial, demonstration and resource in modular synthesis, sound design and composition."

This is extensive and well written. Roland's previous Roland Kuit SoundLab II - Book with Patches for Nord Modular G2 was well received by the synth community. Whether you are new to modular synthesis or a seasoned veteran you should find plenty of value here. If you are running Windows or an older version of the Mac OS, you can instal the Nord Modular G2 software for free and follow along with the tutorials. For OSX Lion you can run it with WineBottler. I took a look at some of the tutorials and although they are based around the Nord Modular G2 software, the concepts of course can be applied to other synths whether that be modular hardware, or software.

Update: updated the link above. It now goes to Roland Kuit's home page where you can either get the courses via the EBOOKs link or MASTERCLASSES for one on one training.

MakeNoise Records & Richard Devine's Latest EP "Creature"

"Tony Rolando from Make Noise Co. and Surachai have been planning for the past several months and the result is a record label called Make Noise Records and the initial series to be released is called Shared System. Tony has put together a self-contained modular synthesizer system composed of Make Noise modules and Surachai is curating the series. The selected artists are given one rule: think inside the box.

Shared System Records has 5 artists lined up and all their recordings will be released on separate limited edition 7″ vinyl releases accompanied by an exclusive download card that grants access to extended aural explorations. We are releasing one 7″ at a time and Richard Devine will be our first offering.

Richard Devine's new EP entitled "Creature" will be the first released on limited edition clear 7" vinyl.

Stay tuned for more information…"

'An Evening with Hindole Majumdar and Kevin Schlei' was a concert on August 19th, 2012 that explored electronics + tabla. This piece, 'Idiom,' is a fully improvised, on-the-spot composition by myself and Hindole. A basic rhythmic pattern forms that he and I use to ground ourselves, and we play off of each other's accents and phrases.

I am using my iPad instrument TC-11 with three iPads, and Hindole is playing his D tabla set with an extra E dayan. You can find more information about Hindole at his website, sites.google.com/site/hindolemajumdar/, and about TC-11 at www.bitshapesoftware.com/instruments/tc-11

Vintage 1980s Synthesizer

This one in via Earthnik:

"This morning I woke up and realized I own a synth the likes of which only a few dozen people in the world may have ever seen. I believe this is one of only two that still exist and no 2 are alike. No solder here ... all wire-wrapped boards.

Full patch panel • assignable joystick • 3 oscillators • capable of frequency and amplitude modulation • two wave forms — controls such as: a sample and hold (of sorts) • symmetry • rotation direction • 3 dimensional rotation • DC offset • and the famous FCE effect.

What is it you ask?

It's a Laser Light Show synthesizer, circa early 1980's. It's made to bounce oscillators and waveforms off one another to create those psychedelic, spirographic and dense spiral designs ... the kind gear heads saw while listening to the synths of Pink Floyd while stoned at a Laseruim show. The FCE effect you ask? It was on all equipment this company made. It stood for Floyd's Cool Effect. Each time it was a pot hooked up to nothing ... either a space holder, a place for future expansion or just a conversation piece." Note this is not a video synthesizer itself, but rather a synth "for driving galvanometers with mirrors on them for Laser Light Shows."

ETI 4600 Synthesiser Auction Video Overview & Demos

4 part video series for this auction.

"ETI 4600 synthesiser demonstration. This is being sold on eBay from August 15th 2012 and ending on August 25th. World-wide shipping is available. This is an overview showing the complete 1970s vintage analogue synthesiser with an overview of the modules and layout.

This synth was a state-of-the-art design when it was conceived back in the1970s. Designed by Trevor Marshall in 1973, this synthesiser was offered in kit form by Maplin Electronic Supplies (in the UK). The parts cost was around £500, and was said to match the performance of synthesisers costing £1500 - that equates to a staggering £15,600 in today's money (according to www.thisismoney.co.uk calculator). This is a collector's dream! This actual synthesiser is featured on the home page of www.eti4600synthesiser.org.uk website, is fully working, and is in great condition considering it is some 35 years old. This synthesiser was built by me in 1977 when I was a teenager and has remained in my possession until now.

Not only is this a great asset for lovers of nostalgia and early electronic music history, but also for the modern day sound design engineer who can sample these great 70's sounds and combine the wonderful early synthesiser sounds with the precision, reliability, automation, and flexibility of modern DAW's!

See the other 3 parts for an in-depth demonstration."

King Crimson EMS Synthi A With Modifications by EMS & Wood Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a rare EMS Synthi A.
It was previously owned by Boz Burrell (Bad Comapny / King Crimson /etc.) and formed part of his collection of sythesisers that he used to hire out for studio use. The unit has been built into a sturdy wooden case to make it more sturdy than the original plastic briefcase, althought the lower part of teh plastic case is, I think, still attached. The wooden case itself is a bit scuffed as you can see but it does protect the unit well.

It was modified by EMS themselves with some of the standard mods that they did for several of their customers (see pictures).

It is in full working order. Boz gave it to me in 1990 when I was working for him as a sound engineer. I was helping to clear some of the older instruments he had and expressed an interest in this so he said I could have it. A few of teh capacitors have been replaced as has one of the power transistors which has been fitted with a heatsink.

I have used it myself in a couple of theatre productions in Germany and then we used it onstage for a while with my own band, That Legendary Wooden Lion.

If you have found this then you probably know what you are looking at but here is a list of features as provided by a previous seller of one of these.

3 Oscillators - all with a very wide range indeed
Filter section - including self oscillating resonance and Stereo Output Filter
64 pin matrix routing system - providing infinitely variable configurations, mod possibilities, routings, you name it. It is essentially a 3 Oscillator modular analogue synthesizer packed into a relatively tiny space, after all.
Ring Modulator
NOISE generator
Envelope Shaper - including Trapezoid
Push Button Trigger
Joystick - for cross modulation, bi-channel frequency control, panning, etc
Stereo Audio Out - including individual panning controls for each channel
Stereo Audio In
Stereo Phones output
Built in analogue reverb - really great, especially when it feeds back!
Built in stereo speakers
VU meter
Power cable - new, to replace the somewhat ailing old one; works perfectly"

"This is the 1191 model; the very first model released in 1974 (which in my opinion make it even more rare since there were less than 300 units total ever made.) It is in great condition considering it is 38 years old. There are a couple of chips in the wood and one scratch on the face I did accidentally when my screwdriver slipped off the screw (oops!). It has been serviced, cleaned, conditioned, and calibrated. I thoroughly went over her with a fine toothed comb and lots of T.L.C.(see picture of insides). I made a manual for it and even made a settings template so you can copy down all of your sounds. I made a video, as you can tell I am not well-versed, but I tried to demonstrate everything is functioning as it should..."

"It is a One Owner. I bought this item new, in Kansas City, in 1973. I used it very little back then and it has spent many years in storage. It uses the keyboard, switches and sliders to generate an infinite variety of sounds. All of these controls are working, and will modify or adjust the output sound. One slider is missing the colored plastic cap. I have been using ordinary computer speakers to play and test this synthesizer. (See photo) These speakers can be included, if buyer agrees to pay actual additional shipping. Speakers shipped separately. 19 panel overlays are included with this synthesizer."

KNAS Ekdahl Moisturizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"Barely used, this is the tuxedo model with black and white knobs. basically, the ekdahl moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. as well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. on top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. also, it incorporates an lfo that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. the ekdahl moisturizer has tons of cv / expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. the moisturizer is a mono unit.

the moisturizer was developed with the help of jason willett (half japanese, leperchaun catering), martin schmidt (matmos, instant coffee), joshua atkins (polygons, major powers), mom & dad and many more - thanks y'all!

what's in the box:
the ekdahl moisturizer contains exactly:
preamp (up to 10 times gain)
reverb
reverb / preamp wet/dry crossfader (knob & cv/ep controllable)

state variable filter with
lowpass/bandpass/highpass seamless crossover (knob, cv/ep & lfo controllable)
cutoff (knob, cv/ep & lfo controllable)
resonance (without resonance limiter)

lfo with
speed control (knob & cv/ep controllable)
square / triangle crossover
external output with output amplitude knob

filter / no filter wet/dry crossfader (knob & cv/ep controllable)"

Hammond 102100 Vintage Analog Mono Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

Video at the auction and previously posted here.

"Up for sale is a very rare Hammond 102100. It is a single oscillator analog monophonic synth made in the mid 70's (1974?) by Hammond Japan. It was originally meant to be a preset synth that would sit atop your Hammond organ. Supposedly there were only 200 ever produced, and there are probably less than 50 in working condition. So I would say it is extrememly rare to find one in this condition. It is much like the other early mono preset synths from the same era: Arp Pro Soloist, Moog Minitmoog, Moog Satellite, Roland SH-1000, Korg Micropreset & Minikorg. All great synths, but this may be the hardest to find.

It is100% functional. All keys work perfectly, no messed up key contacts, sliders move easily, no broken buttons. Very very clean/good physical condition. There is a chip to the wood paneling pictured below. Other than that there is barely a scratch on it.

How it works: There are six factory presets. French Horn, Tuba, Violin, Sax, Clarinet, Solar Echo. These are selectable via the buttons on the right. To the left you have a programming matrix, with buttons for all the functions. The matrix has sections for the following functions: Waveform, octave (3 octave keyboard with 6 octave selectable range), Filter (7 filter envelope positions), Cutoff, 3 Filter Modulations, Envelope, Attack Speed, VCA envelope release, pitch modulation, and vibrato contact delay.

Each button is numbered, so actually remembering a preset is quite easy. You just write down the 7 digit number of all the buttons that were depressed.

Final, but important, note: The power supply is European. It reads 230v 50-60khz 20va. I tested the synth with a basic step up transformer and it worked great."

It has the Tonus logo and VCO4027, these early Arp's are highly sought after for their superior sound to the later versions. Just got it back from servicing, and it is fully functional and sounds amazing! Only issue is it is missing one slider cap. Regarding cosmetics; the tolex is very worn, with some stenciling on the outside, and peeling on the inside. The front panel is in pretty good shape. Includes keyboard with matching serial number, along with power cable and patch cables (not pictured). See pictures below for more details. It does have one mod: the keyboard connector is slightly different and more secure than the standard 6 pin version which is notorious for not working well."
