"And here we are boys and girl! :D Finally 8 months after buying the 9 PCBs, did I start putting this guy together, this past Monday. The 8 daughterboards went together in just over 3 hours, building them in the 'assembly line' format. The wiring to the mother board and the front panel combined though, took 2 more days along with a bit of bug solving yesterday and finishing it, this morning. She's working beauty! :D
If you don't have one and you want a very powerful configurable sequencer / programmer, get to ordering from Ken! :D It can be as short as 1 step, or as many steps as you like! :D Forwards, backwards, jumping to and fro between all of the steps. Manually triggerable as well as the ability to use each step to trigger external things. And 4 channels of Control Voltages! 1 pot for each step, for each channel. The amount of things that can be done with this thing, are scary! :o :D

Hope you enjoy! :D"

TimeGears - One Broadcast Day. Part I

"This composition it's impression of broadcasts the radio station WJSV (Washington, D.C.) recorded in one day on September 21, 1939. - "Just another day. Just another broadcast day evaporating into the ether, like all the days that came before and all the days that followed. Except for one difference. This one was recorded. In its entirety. On thirty-eight 16" double-sided lacquer discs."

This record is preserved entirely up to the present day and fragments of this in chronological order sounds throughout the entire composition. In these fragments can hear everything that sounded on the air - news, announces, advertising, thematic programs and more.

Soundscapes of this composition like a time gears link today's day which has lots of different forms of information, with events that happened over seventy years ago. With what could be heard at the time through only one kind of worldwide electronic information stream." For this project, MAKE Technical Editor Sean Ragan used a cadmium sulfide photoresistor to provide us with our light sensor - a component we have used in previous Weekend Projects. Not only does it look cool and sound great, but once you've made the project, you can customize it by making your own effects disks!"

MFOS NOISE TOASTER In Space II

YouTube Published on Aug 23, 2012 by theraywilsonshow

"Same as last one with some enhancments to the video. There were no flying toasters in the first one... DUH! What was I thinkin'

The MFOS NOISE TOASTER is way more fun than you thought was possible with a 9V battery! It's an awesome little 9V powered noise box that's like carrying around a miniature synth. This project is a bit more complex than the WSG but has far more sound shaping and producing capability. This is going to be one of your favorite toys and it's portable (1W amp and speaker built right in).

This piece is a sound painting. It represents the computers on a planetary probe ship that sometimes whir with activitiy and at other times simply monitor and scan the surroundings. When there is data to record threads in the ship's program activate. The small course correcting jets keep the ship on course. The monitor threads drone in the background.

Multi-track recording using MFOS NOISE TOASTER for all sounds and SONAR Producer Edition for reverb and delay. Made in a semi musique-concrete way using wav file snippets instead of tape. The background drones are all real time throughout. It is a low frequency ramp synced to the LFO and I'm using the vco freq knob to accentuate harmonics. The VCO then goes through the voltage controlled low pass filter whose cut-off frequency is about half way up.

Stones Throw Bleep Laps Dam Funk Drum Machine

YouTube Published on Aug 23, 2012 by djthomaswhite

"Before we begin... You can get it at http://www.stonesthrow.com and it's limited to 100 pieces (yes, one hundred only). And yes, Dam's name is pronounced like "Dame/Same/Game, etc." and I am not saying wrong just in case you are scratching your head while watching the video.

Now then, Hello! I make music and I review gear and love to teach what I discover so others can enjoy soothing repetitious beats and creative music making. Presented here is my explanation, demo and review of the NEW limited edition Dam Funk Drum Machine - yes, available for a limited time and via a limited production run from Stones Throw Records (read: Collectible!).

How did this project come to be? "Well I wanted to make something special for Dam and I reached out to Bleep Labs since I am a huge fan of their products. I told them what I would like the machine to do and they made it happen." says Scotty Coats from Stones Throw. Like he says it's a Bleep Labs design with 4 drum sounds, 4 patterns, play/record, reverse and pitch control over the bass drum and high tom. The tempo is fully adjustable with knob control or tap tempo. There is a very useful LED that changes color per pattern playing to help you keep track of where you are. Patterns are automatically quantized when played in. There is a 9V DC power source and no jack for a wall wart but a mod could easily be added if you dare. The open PCB construction should lend itself to other mods as time goes on and the masses get busy with this thing. I am sure a user-created enclosure will be around the corner as well. Only time will tell.

I love it. It's a fun time to play with for music geeks like me, so don't buy one thinking it is a MPC or Logic in a cute box. It's portable funk and very useful to get your mind out of the DAW world for a second... yes, put Ableton down and push some non-QWERTY buttons, you'll thank me later.

Disclaimer: All opinions expressed are solely my own and I do not represent the manufacturers of this product. I am merely super good friends with my man Scotty Coats who works at Stones Throw. Thanks to Stones Throw, Bleep Labs, Dam Funk and of course, Mr. Coats. All composed music patterns by Thomas White and used with full permission from myself. This unpaid product review has been uploaded with permission from Stones Throw Records.

Again, from what I've been told you can get it at www.Stonesthrow.com (http://stonesthrow.com) and its limited to 100 pieces (yes, one hundred only).

Oh yeah, thanks for stopping by and checking out another one of my videos."

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S

"Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S Analogue Synthesizer and Step Sequencer - as new and hardly used. Comes complete with box, manual, power supply and 11 months manufacturers warranty. Sounds fantastic, but I simply have too many analogue monosynths already, so it has to go.

KEY FEATURES OF LEIPZIG-S

Pure analogue voice and modulation circuitry.
Fat Moog style transistor ladder filter.
2 VCOs with Glide and Sub-VCOs.
Osc Sync & Cross-Mod
Plenty of modulation routing possibilities.
We are a big fan of electronic percussion here, so Leipzig-S modulation choices provide for good drum possibilities
Analogue step sequencer – with plenty of clocking options.
Audio input so can be used as a sound processor.
Rugged steel/aluminium construction.
MIDI In for software sequencer control.

This synth has NO memories! - Advantages;

None of the parameters or controls are quantised. So when you turn a knob, you are turning a resistor that affects a real analogue circuits.
Because each parameter is not under solid CPU control, each parameter has that tiny analogue drift that adds so much to character.
You are forces to be creative. No reliance on presets! Each time you make a sound you are being original.
Quick, easy and simple to use! WYSIWYG - no nasty menus and sub-menus to change the sound.

Differences between Leipzig-S/SK and the original Leipzig;

Envelopes are now full ADSR

EGs can be disconnected from MIDI trigger

VCO2 can be disconnected from MIDI (free running modulator!)

Analogue step sequencer

VCF can be modulated from either EG1 or EG2"

Electro-Harmonix HOG Octave Generator Synthesizer Guitar Effect

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
I was going to pop this one up on MATRIXSYNTH-BB, but figured it was an interesting reminder of what else is out there in the synth world. Electro Harmonix pedals tend to cross over to the synth realm not only with their dedicated synth pedals like the HOG, but others as well. See the EHX label at the bottom of this post and scroll through posts for more.

"Generate everything from extreme sub bass to powerful multi-octave chords with this harmonic octave generator!

Blast off to a whole new universe of sounds with the Electro-Harmonix HOG, a polyphonic guitar synthesizer with NO special pickup required. It gives you complete control of up to 10 interval pitches including fifth and third intervals, glistening filter sweeps, and insane pitch bends. Dedicated filtering and envelope control, with numerous setup options, make the HOG a must-have performance instrument.

The HOG can simultaneously generate multiple octaves and harmonics from your input signal. Whether you play single notes, arpeggios or full chords, the HOG will track every note you play. In addition, the HOG has seven expression modes that enable you to modify your sounds using the included expression pedal, a MIDI controller, or the expression button on the HOG itself. There is also an amplitude envelope and a 2nd order low-pass filter with resonance. The optional EH Foot Controller (I am listing separately) allows you to store and load six presets.

You have control over the HOG's basic audio circuitry with an input gain slider (with clip LED), a dry output slider, and a bypass switch. Audio I/O includes 1/4" Hi-Z input, 1/4" output, and a buffered direct output jack. The voice controls let you access the polyphonic synthesizer section. There are 10 voice sliders on the HOG, each with a white cap with a black line that controls the output volume for its voice. The ten sliders let you generate notes two octaves down, one octave down, the incoming signal, a fifth up, one octave up, an octave up plus a fifth, two octaves up, two octaves up plus a third, three octaves up, and four octaves up. The selectable envelope section controls the amplitude attack or decay of the voices, with separate sliders for the lower five voices and upper five voices.

The Spectral Gate button activates circuitry that emphasizes the loudest frequency or harmonic and reduces the volumes of all other present frequencies and harmonics. The filter frequency slider controls the cutoff or peak frequency of the low pass filter, while the filter resonance slider controls the Q or peak of the filter.

The HOG's seven different expression modes are selected consecutively by the expression mode switch: bend one octave, bend one step, volume, freeze plus gliss, freeze plus volume, wah-wah, and a filter. There is also an expression reverse mode and you can control the expression modes externally with an expression pedal or modulate any of the expression modes using MIDI pitch bend.
Features

Polyphonic guitar synthesizer
No special pickup required
Includes expression pedal
Tracks single notes, arpeggios, or chords
10 interval pitch voices controlled by sliders

Update via Rich in the comments: "Just a short note of clarification:
The above mentioned Curtis SSM2044 was a combination of 2 different companies:

Curtis Electromusic Specialties, founded by Doug Curtis - made the CEM3340 VCO, (Roland Jupiter 6 and others if I recall correctly), CEM3320 VCF, CEM3310 ADSR and quite a few others.

Their biggest competitor was Solid State Microtechnologies by solid state music who made the infamous SSM2040 4 cell chip that was used for 4 pole Low Pass Filters, 2 pole State Variable Filters and a few other configurations. (Prophet 5 versions 1 and 2. Version 3's used the thinner sounding Curtis CEM3320.)
The Korg Mono/Poly and Polysix (amoung many other units) used the SSM2044 4 pole Low Pass Filter."

Seekers Voice Spectra 12 band analog vocoder

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
YouTube Published on Aug 22, 2012 by TallmanJosh

"For sale on Ebay" Be sure to see the very bottom of this post for a note on Seekers.

via this auction

"This has a very clear sound for an analogue vocoder, a big part of why it makes voices so intelligible is the syllable function which inserts noise bursts into the signal for “s” and “sh” syllables. This is a pretty rare feature on an analogue vocoder, and it really helps with intelligiblity. The syllable function is also really cool for creating rhythms.

Here’s some info on it pulled of the interwebs [appears to be via Analogue.org]:

The Voice Spectra has good reputations in Japan for clear extent, high timbre, and for Speech Tracking Function (STF). STF is basically a pitch- to-voltage converter which functions by reading the glottal pulses of the speech signal. The control voltages from the output of the pitch extractor are fed to the VCO, so that this follow the cadences of the speech signaI. STF is an interesting additional facilities only to be found on more expensive vocoders like EMS.

Everyone familiar with vocoding will appreciate the Voice spectras compressor and Voiced/Unvoiced detector*.

The Voice spectra is a high quality studio-vocoder, appreciated by the staff at music studios, professional musicians, etc. in Japan. The articulation of the output signal is extremely good, being distinguished by remarkable clarity and distinctiveness. This quality of articulation, among other things, is what distinguishes SKY soundlab from other less sophisticated vocoders like the MAM VF11. The Voice spectra comes with an inbuilt power supply as well.

*If the air from the lungs is not forced through the vocal chords, but simply expelled through the mouth, then so ralled UNVOICED sounds are produced, such as `f' or `h'. These are basically similar to the type of sounds which can be produced by a noise generator. Most excitation signals do not have a sufficiently wide dynamic spectrum to synthesise the sound of sibilants (`s', `h', etc.). For this reason the voiced/unvoiced detector ensures that the noise generator provides the synthesiser section with the appropriate `raw material' whenever the excitation signal cannot do so.

The voice can be seen as a complex sound generating instrument, consisting of a frequency and amplitude-controlled oscillator (the vocal chords and lungs), a noise generator (the lungs) and a set of tone filters (the mouth and nasal cavities).

"for sale on ebay"

Note this demo doesn't do the best job demoing the synth, but it's purpose of course is to show it is working. The Fizmo is a Transwave synthesizer which was Ensoniqs implementation of Wavetable Synthesis. When it was released Virtual Analog synthesis was all the rage and people were disappointed with the Fizmo because although it was knob laden like the new hardware VAs, it definitely was not a VA synth. It excels in digital morphing sounds and that is a good thing. It is a unique synth and sonically, always reminded me as sitting somewhere between the Waldorf uWave/XT series and a Hartmann Neuron. The Neuron of course employed a whole different method of synthesis termed neuronal synthesis along with I beleive methods of re-synthesis.

"Up for sale is a used Ensoniq Fizmo Rack, and non-original nintendo gaming console power supply. There was an issue with the orginal power supplies damaging Fizmos, so I never used the supply that came with it."

I heard changing the power supply actually doesn't solve the problem. See The Fizmo Fix on Carbon111's site for the hardware fix.

The auction also pointed to Fizmotropolis, what looks to be a great resource for the Fizmo. I haven't seen it before. I'll put a separate post on it next.

"Bernie Smith is not your average session musician. Being the synth and piano man for acts like Annie Lennox and Take That need a special kind of musician. It's a good job that his Jupiter 80 is not your average synth.

Cover of Duran Duran's Last Chance on the Stairway

YouTube Published on Aug 23, 2012 by willrobinsonensoniq

"This song's arrangement was a bit more difficult than I imagined. A month long flu bug also prolonged an otherwise straightforward cover. Worth the effort in my opinion.

Drums, Bass, arpeggiator synth and pad synth, TS12. Marimba was VFX SD, Korg M3r and a recent gift, the Korg 05RW. Thanks to youtube user WAVEFORMBLUE. Roland D20 was paired with the Digitech RP350 for the lush pad. The Yamaha SHS10 was connected via midi to the TS12 through the RP350 for the Keytar lead. During the 1st verse I had the RP350 Phaser swoosh on its own as it is in the recording behind the guitar. Nick's synth were resting I suppose.

The guitar work was the Ibanez through the RP350 as well. The RP350 was worked hard for this cover. Thanks to Duran Duran as well for the inspiration. I just hope I'm not disappointing them with these covers. I probably fudged the Lyrics as well but its what I heard...

The end of the video fades out and back in. Can't find the cause. Software issues...

Verse: A E G D
1st Chorus: Em Bm D A

2ND Chorus: Em Bm D A Em Bm D F(no3rd)
BRIDGE: A E"

It is a first video using Sony HDR XR-500 camera using camera build in microphone.

Enjoy!

A couple of updates via Horsman Inc

Top: "Thanks to a great idea from my Dad you now get a visual preview of each module if you hover your mouse over the module's 'module tree' button for more than half a second. The preview is scaled nicely to fill the free area of screen to the right of the module tree."

Bottom: "You can now select one module then press 'M' on the keyboard to highlight all modules from the selected module's manufacturer. All of the Doepfer modules in the rack below [left] have been selected in this way"

Be sure to see Horsman Inc for more. This planner is really taking shape and looks fantastic.
