Analog Synare S3X SN 101873 with Original Box & Documentation

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"Up for auction here is a rare vintage Synare S3X drum synthesizer, made somewhere around 1980 by Star Instruments of Stafford Springs, CT. It's an update of the somewhat more common Synare PS3 drum synth, which turns up from time to time in New Wave and, especially, disco records of the era. Nowadays, these Synare drums are more often used as a nice portable impact-activated analog synth, rather like hitting a Moog with a stick. It's got two oscillators and a ton of sonic possibilities, you can get real dubsteppy real quick with this thing, it's got a sound that matches up well with its UFO-like shape. (Check out "Synare" on youtube for an idea of some of the possibilities.)

The differences between this S3X and the earlier PS3 are several:

The S3X allows you to have 5 preset sounds, available by turning the rightmost knob on the unit. These are adjustable, to some degree, by opening up the case and turning one of the five trim pots on the circuit board. The preset sounds can be modified in real time by adjusting the knobs on the front of the drum, e.g., increasing or decreasing the Decay time. Selecting Preset 0 puts the drum in full realtime control without any preset sound source.

The sensitivity of the drum can be adjusted by turning another trim pot on the circuit board.

The S3X can be used with a Synare Sequencer without modification, whereas a PS3 requires retro-fitting to work with the Sequencer.

The S3X uses a wall wart power supply rather than two 9-volt batteries, so you don't run out of juice during a show. Also, each S3X has two 1/8" input/output jacks for DC power, which allows you to chain multiple drums to one power supply simply by running a 1/8" cable between your drums.

The condition of this unit isn't mint but it's not at all bad for a 30-year-old piece. The white drumhead is marked from playing but still perfectly responsive, not rotted and flaking like some you see. There's minor scratches and scrapes on the surface but no dents or rust. I've never gotten much of a sound from presets 1 and 2 but otherwise the controls function as they should.

I'm also including an interesting pile of documentation that came with the drum.

A folded one-sheet with a diagram of the drum interior on one side and a description of the internal preset, etc., controls on the other.
A (rather faded) second sheet with a diagram of the exterior controls on one side and some suggested configurations on the the other, and
Four pages of hand-written diagrams and notes, dated 2/11/80, describing the operation of the drum. I don't know if this came from the factory or what, but it's interesting.

Finally, this drum comes with an after-market (Radio Shack) wall wart adapter that works well with the drum. It has the requisite 1/8" male tip, which can be rather difficult to find.

And, finally, finally, I'll even enclose the original box, though that and everything else will be well-packed and protected in a larger container."

Planet Rock comes in at 4:32.

"This is a live performance, a remix of Candi Station's "You got the love" - you know, the original? I then kinda got naughty and added Daft Punk's "Robot Rock"
Please excuse the neon lights and the dancing.

This is about an 8 bar loop with lots of layers which is controlled (switched on and off) by the Korg Nano Kontrol.

Playing live is the Prophet 08 which does the arp, the moog which does some moog stuff and the JD800 which is really the star of this one, doing the bass and the Robot Rock guitar. I guess Daft Punk used the Korg MS-20 in the original, I sold mine. Instead I rework a JD800 patch used in "Voodoo People" by The Prodigy.

I did sing live but double tracked and added delay before uploading."

Hartmann Neuron VS Neuronal Software Synth

"The Hartmann Neuron was an extremely complex and powerful keyboard synthesizer sold by Hartmann Music from around 2001-2005. Using advanced digital modelling, it could resynthesise sounds with all the complexity of acoustic instruments, giving the player control over physical parameters such as body size and material.
The Neuron was a commercial flop due to its cost and development problems, but more approachable is the Neuron VS, a software version for Windows PC/MAC.
This VST instrument comes with its own USB hardware controller, the Nuke, which acts as a real-time performance controller and as an editor using the supplied Model Maker software.
It won't run under Vista or Windows 7.

"I actually like it better than the Roland Juno 106, because you can split this synth in two so it's like having two synths in one, The keyboard features splits and layers like I said , all of which can be saved with patch data. Choose between 8 voice polyphony with 1 oscillator per voice, 4 voice polyphony with dual oscillators per voice, 2 voice polyphony with a mega 4 oscillators per voice, or the unison mode which is just a fat 8-voice solo mode for mad bass and lead heaven! Similar to the Juno-106, the Split-8 uses a Chorus effect to liven up the sound and the low pass filter filter is really nice too" Totally different sonic character than the 106 of course.

"This is the first in a new series of Reaktor Tutorials that we will be posting on www.flipmu.com. This video covers the different ways in which you can modulate a Filter in Reaktor, and discusses the details about why you would choose one input over the other.

The video starts with a brief overview of the test ensemble, and demonstrates the way different controls sound when hooked up to either the PM input or the FM input.

The second half of the video goes into the details of WHY you might want to hook up knobs and LFOs to the Pitch inputs, and hook up ENVs to the Frequency inputs.

Quick noise with a small Make Noise system from Peter Speer on Vimeo.

A filter-free patch in a DPO, Maths, Echophon, Optomix and Brains/Pressure Points mini-system (a contact mic (not from Make Noise, bottom right) is also used).

Details:

Sines from the DPO's two VCOs sent to Maths channels 2 & 3 and mixed at the Sum output --> Echophon signal input. Echophon out --> Optomix signal in. Signal out: speakers.

A mult of the Echophon's output is sent to VCO-A's Exponential FM input and VCO-B's Linear FM input.

Pressure Point's T-Gate is triggering Maths' Channel 1 envelope. The Press output is controlling the Fall times of both Maths envelopes. Row 1 is modulating the Echophon's pitch shifter, Rows 2 and 3 are patched to VCOs A and B 1v/oct. .

Maths Channel 4 LFO is setting the Echophon's feedback amount and the sequence's direction.

Tapping the contact mic advances the sequence position and pings the Optomix's Strike input).

Novation BassStation VST in Ableton Tutorial

Ableton Live Tips w/ Thavius Beck Pt 15 - Configuring 3rd Party Plugins - 'Did You Know?'

YouTube Published on Sep 17, 2012 by DubSpot

"More info: http://bit.ly/O8U711
Dubspot Instructor, Ableton Certified Trainer, and electronic musician Thavius Beck returns with a brand-new season of Did You Know? We launched the series back in January, and for eight consecutive Mondays, Thavius shared invaluable production advice, tips, tricks, and techniques and examined some of the less explored and slightly hidden features in Ableton Live. In this episode, Thavius offers tips and techniques for configuring third-party plug-in effects with Live, using Novation's Bass Station VST.

As nice as it is to have so many instruments and effects available within Live, there are many times when you will want to use a third-party plug-in instead. Thankfully not only are you able to use third-party effects, but you can also automate them and MIDI or key map their individual parameters to control them. There are many simple ways to do this, but in this video we will look at the Configure button that shows up when you unfold a third-party plug-in inside of Live.

For this example, I am using Novation's Bass Station plug-in. When I first put my Bass Station (or just about any other third-party plug-in not built into Live) onto a track, I get a pretty generic interface with a black square and circle (representing an X/Y grid) and not much else. What I would like to see instead are the parameters that I want to either automate or potentially map to my controller without having the Bass Station interface blocking my view of the arrangement. One way to do that is to unfold the effect (hit the triangle in the upper-left corner), which will reveal the Configure button. Once Configure is enabled, you can just click on the parameters in the effect that you want to see in Live's generic third-party effect interface. This will also make these parameters show up in the Arrangement View's automation lanes.

This can also be done by simply entering the MIDI or key mapping mode and clicking on parameters of the effect (without mapping them), or by altering the parameters while recording to the arrangement view. Using Configure is a great option when you don't want to inadvertently alter the parameters on other sections of the track or song after the fact; you can select the parameter you want to tweak, go the exact spot in the arrangement you want to tweak and automate it without recording it live. Just another way to give you more control over your effects. - Thavius Beck"

"Oxygen II" - on Elka and Technics organs

YouTube Published on Sep 17, 2012 by organfairy

"This is not intended as a 1-to-1 reproduction of Jean Michel Jarre's famous classic. It is more like my shot at it using the instruments that I have.
It's funny that just because JMJ used an Eminent U310 and later an Elka X-705 then these exact organ models sells for astronomical prices while most other organs can be bought for peanuts.

So therefore I have used Elka X-30 and Technics SX-C600 to play most of the arrangement. I don't have a MiniPops 7 drum machine so I used a Rhythm Ace. One thing I did to make it more authentic was that I manually added the quijada sound to the rhythm. I synthesized it on my Roland JX-8P because I felt that it was vital for the mood of the melody. The sequence that runs through the first part was programmed on the little Korg Poly 800 and most of the sound effect was made on my Roland SH-2000. Finally I added the sound of my homebuild zimbelstern because I hadn't got a clue on how to make the huithuithuithuithuit sounds of the EMS synthesizer that I assume Jarre used.
For once I had the sheet music. I found it at the public library - you know, the house with books made of real paper in it. But it's not easy when the composer doesn't follow his own notes on the recording he made!

I haven's added many effects efter the sounds were recorded. Just some panning, reverb, and echo."

Arcade button sequencer - New prototype!

Published on Aug 5, 2012 by itijik

A little jam with my new arcade button sequencer prototype!

It is more narrow than the last version (I am using the old box for now).
New features include a 4 channel pulse sequencer, which is programmed using the existing buttons and a new program button. The four LEDs up top indicate which channel you are currently programming.

Modules being used:
-Tiptop 808 drums, triggered from the sequencer's new pulse sequence outputs

-Makenoise Echophon, with the Doepfer ring mod in the feedback loop.

-Livewire AFG sine output as the second input to the ring mod, modulated by a CV output of the sequencer at some points.

-Makenoise Maths triggered from the sequencer (same channel as the kick), to the pitch input of the Echophon.

A little compression was added in Ableton Live before rendering.
