Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2012 by defzeppardica

Published on Sep 22, 2012 by defzeppardica

"This is my entry in the Moog Circuit Bending Challenge! I built a floor sampler that is capable of recording individual samples with a maximum length of 8 seconds each. The unit is powered via USB 5V. The unit is made out of redwood with a steel control plate top. Audio is plugged in via the input 1/4" jack. When in record mode, pressing any of the 8 buttons results in recording of the input. When switched to play mode, that audio is played back. There is also an expression pedal input so sample rate can be changed by foot. The whole unit is completely foot controllable. Besides the circuit bend challenge, I plan on using the sampler for jams so I can launch clips and fun effects.
I have to admit, the whole bend was frustrating. I began working on it when Moog announced the challenge and went through 3 variations before starting this one less than a week before the challenge ended. Everything that could possibly go wrong, went wrong: my camera lost the videos I recorded during the build, my computer kept crashing when editing the video, I fried an IC when I wasn't paying attention, ect. I lost a fair amount of sleep working on this and I know I am a contender for the top 3 in the challenge. I hope to place so I can bring my sampler to Asheville and show it off to all the people at Moogfest. It is built like a tank so it is fairly indestructible.

Thanks for watching my video!"

"This is an updated version of the MB9090 blog, on how to build a TR 909 clone. In a first stage I have built the 9090, now I am finalizing a TR 909 like sequencer, the MB909, using the MidiBox core with the SeqV4 firmware as a base. When the beta version is approved by a test group, I'll than organize a bulkorder for the final version of the 909 clone sequencer."

CGS Programmer Sequencer mdification

Published on Sep 22, 2012 by Richarius Molindarius
"In this modification to the CGS (inspired from Serge's) Programmer Sequencer, I came up with the idea of giving this module the same function as the PLAY / SKIP / HALT functionality that the Moog 960 Sequencer has. There was a pair of errors in my mod. design though. Ken Stone (CGS) very thankfully, corrected the most important error. Otherwise, the modification would not have worked at all. Thank you greatly Ken! :D

The Programmer Sequencer was already extremely powerful in everything that it can do. Now, mine at the very least, is all the MORE powerful! :D

I hope you enjoy the vid. :)"

Dan McPharlin Inspired Circuit Bent Yamaha PSS-30 Dream Machine

via this auction

Videos here and here.

Those of you that have been coming to this site over the years might remember Dan McPharlin's miniature synth art. According to noystoise this was commissioned to look like one of his creations and it sure does.

"Wow. this is definitely the longest project i have worked on to date. i began this commission shortly after the "Hartman Mod Job" last february. i was contacted by a guy who was interested in having me build a synthesizer for him that looked like one of Dan McPharlin's miniatures. it sounded like fun and there were some new applications that i was anxious to try out so i agreed. the initial idea was to build a mini synthesizer with a detachable keyboard and as many controls and effects as i could fit. i decided to be courageous and model the toy synth on the notoriously stubborn yamaha pss-30."

You'll find full details on noystoise here.

Click the top pic above for the super size shot.  The pic to the left unfortunately is not as large.

Absolute Extremes MCBC-01 Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2012 Video

Published on Sep 21, 2012 by deathstarchris
Video of the MCBC-01 featured in this post.

"Josh Felice and I (Chris Blarsky) are proud to enter out MCBC-01 into the Moog Circuit Bending Challenge. We spent a considerable amount of time working out the best bends available from the Akai S01 and believe this to be the best of the best as far as bent samplers. We are not alone in this opinion as www.Circuitbenders.co.uk were the first to attempt bending this particular model sampler and have found it to be superior in flexibility and reliability. We have built upon their ideas and tried to push the limit even further. Along with the ability to midi trigger from an iPad or QuNeo, we have added a couple of square clocks that feed directly into the ram causing all sorts of mayhem. I enjoyed designing this piece in hardwood. I can see after working with wood why Bob Moog liked to build with it. It feels natural and strong. I will work in wood more now that I have had a chance to do so. I have more information available about this unique piece of kit on my audio page located here:

This is a piece performed on the Korg Radias, using both Step Sequencers and played live. I took one of the presets and played around with the settings and the sounds.

Hope you enjoy

Update: Some info on the gear and another video below.

"The system on the left that I'm playing is my DIY CGS Serge. Both sounds come from it, The kick drum comes from the 909. The bass line is CGS ENS-76 VCO being sequenced via a midi to CV converter. The looping 'acid' sound is a Serge VCS sequenced by the Baby10 step sequencer in a Cigar box. The Paia 4700 system below the 909 I'm not using in this song."

SOVIET LELL CZ DIGITAL DELAY (CHORUS REVERB)

mechanical animals

"LELL were the first normal stompboxes made in Russia. They had normal guitar jacks and even a 9-volt socket - same format as BOSS pedals. The footswitch pad reveals a battery cavity underneath.
The company still exists! It's website for some unknown reason claims the company was established in 1992. But look at the pictures - we've got a proof it was active in the 80's. The headquaters is located in Moscow, on the Lower Krasnoselskaja street. "Digital Delay" in Russian goes like "Cifrovaja Zaderjka", and while in Russian "CZ" makes sence, it was lost when it was transferred to another language. In fact, there was no chance to convert it into "DD" (digital delay) since the DD pedal already exists - it's 'Drive/Distortion'."
