Doepfer modular, Sequentix P3 and Cheetah MS6

Published on Sep 23, 2012 by diverseaudiolab

"In which the Diverse Audio Laboratory turn the lights down low, crack open a bottle of "Old Hooky" and contemplate the myriad possibilities offered to them by the combination of a eurorack modular, a Cheetah MS6 and a Sequentix P3. Possibilities that they then comprehensively and laughably fail to exploit.

(Noises by Doepfer/Analogue Solutions/MFB/Cheetah, sequencing by Sequentix and effects by Echoman/Peavey. Hair and make-up by Maurice.)

Test And Factory Reset Procedures For Yamaha RX11

"After Almost 30 Years Scientists Finally Discover Test And Factory Reset Procedures For Yamaha RX11

"During all those years that RX11 has been around I have never seen anyone mention the factory reset procedure or test mode. RX11 manuals (even the Service Manual) do not provide any hints. The funny thing is, even Yamaha itself does not seem to know about those, see yourself.

However, this is simply not true. The factory reset and test procedures have been among us all the time, so here's the 'big news': Pressing and holding STOP/CONTINUE and +1/YES buttons while switching the machine on performs factory reset after displaying exact ROM version number for a moment. Factory reset cleans up the most critical RAM area and restores factory defaults for the following settings that could otherwise prohibit RX11 from acting normally (all numbers are in hex)..."  See the wolzow link above for more."

via this auction

"the a-143 series of modules contain multiple modulation sources. module a-143-2 is a four-fold adsr type envelope generator.

the module contains 4 independent adsr-type envelope generators. each sub-module has available the controls attack, decay, sustain and release. the three-position range switch allows to select the desired time range (low - high - medium). the adjustable envelope time ranges from several minutes to less than 100 microseconds. on top of this each sub-module is equipped with three digital outputs (high/low): "end of attack (eoa)", "end of decay (eod)" and "end of release (eor)". as soon as the criterion is valid (e.g. end of decay state) the corresponding digital outputs turns to "high". these outputs can be used e.g. to daisy-chain several adsr sub-modules. for this the digital output in question (eoa, eod or eor) has to be connected to the gate input of the following adsr. even automatically running envelopes (pseudo lfos) or so-called "quadrature envelopes" with cyclical modulations of several ring-shaped, daisy-chained adsrs are possible. to obtain a pseudo lfo simply the eod or eor output has to be connected to the gate input of the same adsr.

in addition to the obligatory gate (g) input for envelope generators each sub-module has available a retrigger (rt) input. the retrigger turns the direction to "upward" if the envelope has already reached the decay state while the retrigger pulse occurs. if the envelope is still in the attack phase the retrigger input has no meaning. this a different behaviour from a-140 and a-141!

all gate inputs are normalled from top to bottom, i.e. the gate input of the above sub-module is connected to the switching contact of the succeeding module. thus only one gate signal can be used to trigger all four sub-modules. but even other types of normalling are possible if desired (e.g. eod or eor of the above adsr to the gate input of the succeeding sub-module)."

"This is a basic operational demo of the xBase 09. It doesn't go in to the many advanced features, however it does give an idea of its overall sound and tweak-ability.

Its a great sounding 909 type drum sequencer, loaded with many 8 bit sounds that can run along side the purely analogue bass and snare drum. It features lfos and real time parameter recording for ultimate flexibility. Classic!"

SynclavierX Editor to Become Stand Alone Virtual Synclavier

The SynclavierX editor may become a stand alone synth.

Via Synclavier.com:

"But here is where I need your help - all of you - former N.E.D. customers, employees and well-wishers alike. I have to turn SynclavierX into a saleable product that has a larger potential customer base than just the original Synclavier® users. I hope to accomplish that expanding SynclavierX to actually recreate the sounds of the original Synclavier® system. This can be done by digitally modeling the original FM and Poly Sampling voice cards under the control of the SynclavierX Application. I have everything I need to do that except for possibly the time and the patience..."

mechanical animals

"LELL were the first normal stompboxes made in Russia. They had normal guitar jacks and even a 9-volt socket - same format as BOSS pedals. The footswitch pad reveals a battery cavity underneath.
The company still exists! It's website for some unknown reason claims the company was established in 1992. But look at the pictures - we've got a proof it was active in the 80's. The headquaters is located in Moscow, on the Lower Krasnoselskaja street.

The Drive/Distortion features two circuits in one pedal and the mini toggle switches between them. Two upper knobs are overdrive and distortion gains and the lower row of master controls affect both effects. The overdrive section is more useable because the noise this thing produces is terrible and the distortion amplifies it too much. But I like the sound of the overdrive: it's not brutal and it aplies a very strong EQ to the signal. It cuts everything except for middles in a narrow 800-10kHz range (no' it's not from the manual, it's what I hear). The "filter" knob shifts the frequency peak around 1-5 kHz. All the rest of the knobs affect different gain/volume stages. I use this pedal mainly with vocals - the EQ it produces is very telephone-like and it makes the vocals cut through."

New Hexinverter vcNOIZ module Audio Demo

"I decided it would be a grand idea to demonstrate the vcNOIZ module I am currently designing, so I patched up some sounds with it in my modular synthesizer and hit record. This is an unedited clip. A touch of delay was added, otherwise, it's straight out of the modular!

I am using a keyboard for voltage control of the oscillators and noise generator.

The vcNOIZ circuit is a discrete logic-based voltage-controllable noise generator that has a very unique, almost retro sound. The pitch is able to be controlled by LFOs and other voltage sources, as you can hear in this demo. It has two sub-octave outputs as well as clock output and input, making it a great source of random gates as well. It can also serve as a voltage controllable clock for your system.

Like I said, it is entirely discrete logic based. THERE ARE NO MICROCONTROLLERS USED IN THIS DESIGN, so, you don't have any annoying aliasing on the CV response.

I will have PCBs available for sale so you can build one, too. I will likely also be selling modules at some point soon.

For more info, or to buy a circuit board/module when they are out, check out http://www.hexinverter.net"

Buchla 230e - Triple Envelope Tracker / Preamplifier

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"We took the old 230 envelope detector, changed its name to better identify its function, improved its performance a bit, added a microphone preamplifier for use with live signals, and of course added capability for storing and retrieving presets.

The 230e’s envelope trackers have adjustable gains and variable response times. Their output levels are 10 volts full scale, with LED’s indicating intermediate values. Pulse outputs are triple state, responding to signal level changes as well as steady states, and may be coupled so as to respond to transient information even in the presence of background activity. Like pulling drum triggers from a mix. LED’s indicate pulse activity.

Wrapping up the 230e are three preamps, each with variable gain and dual input connectors (TRS or XLR). Balanced or unbalanced microphones or instruments can be accommodated; phantom power may be engaged if needed.

The preamplifier is provided with input and output connections to facilitate its use as a mixer; outputs are normalized to the envelope trackers’ inputs, enabling independent use of the devices.

The microphone gains are not stored as part of a preset. All other settings can be stored with the aid of a 206e or a 225e preset manager."

Hardsid4u C64 SID Chip VSTi Sidstation

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

The Hardsid4u is a hardware device for Windows PC's that allows you to control four C64 SID chips either as a VSTi controled synthesizer or as a real sound device in your favorite C64 emulator. It offers four times the power of a sidstation at nearly a quarter the price! The following details are from from Hardsid.com
--------------------------------------------

Two CPUs and main memory
USB connection (compatible with both 2.0 & 1.1)
Isochronous USB endpoint for low-latency audio
VSTi interface with 8000Hz update rate on all SID registers (free)

Wave-in VSTi pin for routing 8000Hz signals to any registers (example: playing other VSTi's sound on the volume register)
Full automation of all VSTi parameters
Superior sound quality (..it is a HardSID!)
Support for up to four SID chips (6581/8580/6582 in any combination)
Updateable firmware over USB
Microsoft Vista compatible (drivers for Win2000/XP/Vista)
Cycle-accurate playback of your favorite SID tunes
Digitized sound + high-speed playback with low CPU utilization

Seamless playback of .sid tunes while you work on your PC by providing a huge playback buffer for non-VSTi applications
Supported by the HardSID 4U Winamp Plugin! (seeking, sub-tune handling, IR remote controlling)
-------------------------------------------
This particular unit I have installed 4 chips, that include 3 8580 and 1 6581 chip. As you can see by the pictures, these are easily user swappable and you can put your own chips in there. Sids vary wildly from revision to revision and even from chip to chip so you may want to swap some of these out for your own chips if you have a supply. The only chip that is questionable is chip 3, it runs oddly on some sids and the filter seems less usable than the other chips. The hardsid itself works fine as using a different chip in that socket shows no problems. I have recorded an audio demo of the chips below"

ADT METAHEX FM HARD SYNC UNIT

"Very rare 'Metahex' unit by the company Abstract Data (ADT)

This synth eventually became known as the 'Synthex' - full information and manual can be found on the ADT website.

This is baically a very unique FM AND Hard Sync FX unit, that allows you to insert 2 separete audio signals to modulate an internal analog oscilator (either via Fm or Hard Sync).

Controls:

'Start' - Power switch

Waveshape - controls the waveshape of the internal oscillator from square to triangle.

Pitch - controls the pitch of the internal oscillator

Sync x fade - controls the balance between the dry oscillator and the hard sync'd effect from the first input

Sync Level - volume control for Hard Sync effect

Fm X Fade - controls the balance between the dry oacillator and the FM effect from the second input

FM LEvel - volume control for FM effect

'Flip' - flips the inputs around e.g.:

Flip 'off' - input 1 = Hard Sync input _____ input 2 = FM input

Flip 'on' - input 1 = FM input ______ input 2 = Hard Sync input

'Noise' - add's analog noise to the output signal for a dirtier / grittier sound.

Please see video for demo of sounds:

Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar SN 0691

"Offered for sale is this Oscar in very near mint cosmetic condition and perfect working order.

It is incredibly clean for a synth that's nearly 30 years old and is without doubt the best one we've sold (see detailed photos below). There is minimal wear to the paintwork, the keys are shiny and clean, the rubber casing is exceptionally good with no obvious signs of perishing - the rubber parts are undamaged (most Oscars suffer from these parts breaking off and it's uncommon to find one with no damage).

Our definition of 'mint' is 'as it left the factory' - clearly very few if any used synths of this age can be described thus; this OSCar truly is in near mint condition.

It has just been serviced by James Walker at Synth Repair Services (one of the UK's most respected vintage synth techs who has a particular fondness for OSCars) and he's given it a clean bill of health. He also looked after it for the previous owner: it's been very well-maintained and has had a good deal of work carried out both in the recent service and over the past 8 years. As a result, we don't believe you will find a better example of this iconic British synth anywhere else.

Cosmetically, it has just one issue that we can make out: the low F key is slightly yellower than the others; it may have been replaced at some point in the past. It has been PAT-tested for electrical safety.

At 30 years old OSCars generally need a few things replacing/improving if they are to continue working as intended - especially the Midi board connections which can be very unreliable, resulting in synth that can stop working when moved from one room to another, never mind being sent by courier. The original control pots tend to become unreliable and often need replacing.
Everything necessary and advisable has been done to bring it up to top spec and make this amazing vintage synth as reliable as possible: it should reach its new owner in perfect working order.

It's serial number is 0691 and has the midi board and latest OS Eprom (OM2a)..."

Serge Modular vid #28

Published on Sep 23, 2012 by Phisynth

"Rhythm programming on the Serge - here's a quick way of doing it, using only Slope Generators and a Pulse Divider from one clock.

The sources are simple noise (DUSG 1) and Tri oscillators here (2 & 3). The vid has no musical purposes...

The base concept is : use one pulse division for triggering the channel, and other randomly chosen divisions to control the CV In and 1V/oct from the same channel.

The DUSG output controls the amplitude and may control the VCF from the source at the same time (to create a kick-like effect), but I find it even more interesting if it controls the amplitude of one channel and the VCF of another at the same time (as shown around 3:03 with the orange cable)...

Gives semi-randomness in pitch and syncopated rhythms like this :

ps: on the same principle, add some VC-controlled filters in the signal chain and you're in IDM-heaven..."
