Noodling & Just An Illusion with Minimoog and Emulator

Published on Oct 2, 2012 by SynthManiaDotCom

"A quick noodling session with Minimoog, Emulator, LinnDrum. Again, my audio interface is being exchanged and I'm using the computer's internal card, so apologies for the noise floor. The Emulator going out of tune in a couple of parts is because I inadvertently moved the pitch bend wheel with my elbow :-D"

"Here we have a great 100% working example of a Moog Concertmate MG-1. I received this gem 15 months ago, but bought myself a Micromoog recently. My home boss (wife) says it has to go. Included in this auction is a printed color manual, and the three replacement octave divide down 5823 chips in case the originals went bad some day (common prob Ihear forMG-1s). The chips came from Flatkeys in England. There are three total. Since nothing is wrong with the synth, i didnt need to replace them. My loss is your gain. They will be included..."

via the listing: "I got this equipment at a Storage Auction of a room owned by Michael Lewis who played with Quicksilver Messenger Service, Seeds Of Time, and several other 60's and 70's bands. This is not the same ARP Odyssey that I had listed lase week. For all those of you that made lowball offers on that one, here is a chance to get one for half the price others are being listed at. Fix it yourself and save.

Early ARP Odyssey White Face Synthesizer #28913. This lights up when plugged in, but has not been tested, and is being sold AS IS. It has some condition problems: there is one white key that is broken the end off (the broken peice is included, and looks like it could be fixed or replaced easy enough). The Transpose Octaves up/down switch is missing the end (but still can be switched). There is one slider knob that has been broken off (the part inside still slides), and another slider is missing the little rubber cap. None of these defects could stop it from working - if it does work..."

"Once again inspired by Master Builder DmitriSFC, I went down to the (cough cough) 'studio' to make this really laid back'n'mild slowly changing harmonic parameters of a piece that would take hours / etc. to evolve.
How THIS track happened as a result - I have no phreakin' clue! HAHAhahaha. It shore ain't GENESIS or MINISTRY or even Tangerine Dream as I'm minorly famed for Retro'ing ... but somehow, it came outta my monster! Lol.

Recorded in stereo as well. Not sure if I'll post it to soundcloud or not.

Hope y'enjoy boys and girl! :D

BMF/macProVideo series "Foundation of Synthesis" Grows to Six Courses

MACPROVIDEO.COM/ASKVIDEO.COM AND THE BOB MOOG FOUNDATION SYNTHESIZE THE MOOG LEGACY AND EDUCATION in FOUNDATION OF SYNTHESIS SERIES

"October 2, 2012 (Vancouver, BC) macProVideo.com announces the release of the final three courses in the Bob Moog Foundation’s six part series, Foundation of Synthesis. This series couples Bob Moog’s passion for synthesis and innovation with macProVideo.com’s passion for bringing top tier education to audio lovers everywhere. The courses are led by Marc Doty, the Bob Moog Foundation’s Archive and Educational Specialist. Known throughout the synthesizer community for his instructional videos, Doty employs his understanding of electronic music history, synthesis, and the physics of sound in order to enlighten and engage geeks and novices alike to the principles behind sculpting sound. Synthesist Erik Norlander is featured throughout the series employing his massive Wall of Doom modular Moog synthesizer to assist in demonstrating concepts.

On the courses, Doty comments, “The great revolution in synthesis that took place in the 1960s was voltage control, in no small part due to the efforts of Bob Moog! The second series of videos dives into that topic and shows how the oscillator, filter, amplifier, and more can be controlled with the envelope and LFO, or by each other, through voltage control. It is through modulation that you really grasp how each section of the synthesizer is connected, and allows you to envision the most creative and musical applications of the various parts.

Steve Horelick, macProVideo.com’s and AskVideo.com’s says, “We set out to create courses for musicians who want to really learn how to use actual synthesizers. With hardware opportunities spawned by the Eurorack modular craze, the kind of synthesis that Bob Moog was so innovative with is becoming accessible to a wider audience and a new generation. Being able to bring this world to our users is something we are really proud and excited about! A portion of proceeds from the course sales go directly to the Bob Moog Foundation to support their educational programs.”

The first three courses were hugely successful and have already generated considerable funding for the Foundation. For more information on macProVideo.com and to view the courses, please visit www.macprovideo.com. For more information and how to get involved with the Bob Moog Foundation, please visit their website, http://moogfoundation.org/."

Catjar in the Rye

"'Catjar in the Rye' (or 'Betty', as she is know to her friends) is an experimental sound instrument built for Swedish composer Andreas Catjar. It combines a chaotic Benjolin synthesizer, extreme fuzz distortion unit, a speaker/ contact-mic feedback system and 'circuit-bending' -style body contacts into one rugged flightcase. The Benjolin features several modifications, including patchable routing banana jacks, LED lights for the three stages of its analog shift register and an external audio input. I hope to post some sounds and video later on, when Andreas has time to make them.

My thanks go out to Rob Hordijk, who designed the Benjolin circuit, and to Pete Edwards/Casper Electronics for his help in working out the modifications..."

wire to the ear Visits Three Wave Music

Oliver Chesler, aka The Horrorist wrote in to let us know he paid a visit to the infamous Three Wave Music in New Jersey.  You might remember their insane synth collection from previous posts including this one.  It's crazy to think that behind those doors in this unassuming building is one of the largest collection of synths in the US, if not the largest.  Click the second pic below for the impressive panorama.  Enjoy the synth spotting. You'll find close-up pics and a write-up at Oliver Chesler's wire to the ear.

Audioweevil Ring Modulator by Bugbrand

via this auction

"Audio Weevil Digi-ringmodulation with audio input (first time on a digi-weevil). The box can function either as a sound synthesiser (without audio input) for traditional (ha!) Weevil sounds, or you can, in a pretty chaotic way, pass audio into it for serious sound mangles - the audio input is turned into a squarewave that is then quasi-ring-modulated by the two internal squarewave oscillators. The top of the box takes some serious nods at the Cracklebox - 8 large body-contact touch pads that really bend and warp the sound for great hands-on playability. It has a 1/4 inch jack input and output on the rear of the unit. Here is a link the website so you can see for yourself!http://www.bugbrand.co.uk/bugbrand_old/pages/sounddevices.htm On the back it says 1 of 10 so I can presume that this is one unit of a batch of 10 making it pretty unique!"

ZW Bassmachine

"This is a fine example of the incredibly rare Swiss/Italian design ZW Bassmachine, a true analog monophonic synth with two oscillators and ten preset sounds.

The instrument has a two-octave full sized keyboard, wood cabinet and end cheeks, octave switch, tune, envelope controls and second oscillator switch with Detune.

The sounds vary from similar to a Roland TB303 Bassline to more like an EDP Wasp or a Moog Rogue. The filter design is a Moog-style transistor ladder, clearly identifiable on the circuit board - probably not licensed :-)"

"This particular VCS3 MKII was once in a synthesizer museum in Great Britain. I acquired it in 2000, and it has lived in my smoke-free studio and been treated very well. Works wonderfully as both as as synth and as an effects processor. Along with the Synthi AKS, it is probably one of the most versatile instruments I have used in the past 25 years.

This instrument includes an external gate input modification for MIDI/CV applications, but no other mods have been added because I did not feel the need for them. EMS has an variety of mods they can perform for you so I would recommend contacted Robin Wood for a list.

The VCS3 will ship worldwide in a custom-made flight case by A&S Case Co. out of Los Angeles, CA. It is extremely rugged and was used during international tours with the instrument."
