Hallucination

Published on Oct 11, 2012 by br0therl0c0

"Once again I find myself indulging in some retro dark soundtrack work. This time the opening credit theme for the sci-fi film I never made. A slowly evolving track that I wanted to play live and keep simple and raw.

Everything is played/sequenced live and is entirely analog except for the drums and built-in Andromeda FX.

Annotated as usual to keep me entertained and provide some info.

Synth nerd details:
- Electribe is clocking the Moon M569 sequencer through a M553 MIDI-to-Clock converter and M554 Clock Divider. Sequencer is controlling a tomoberheim.com SEM. Row 1 are main notes, and row 2 transposes those notes.
- Controlling the modular with a Novation Remote 25SL into a Moon M551 MIDI-to-Voltage converter. 3 MacBeth MK1 oscillators with individual glide settings into MK1 'A' Filter.
- Recorded straight into Digital Performer using a MOTU 828 MK3 audio interface.
- Shot in HD with a Canon Rebel t4i. Put together in iMovie.

I hope you dig it."

"The day has arrived. Despite this album being my most personal and emotional album release, I am really happy that it’s finally out of my hands. I’ll elaborate much more in another post about the making of La Petite Mort, but for now I think that it’s important to mention that this is absolutely an album that’s meant to be played in its entirety from beginning to end. Originally I was going to release this all as a single hour long track, but I decided to break it up since I know a lot of people won’t sit listening through all the way. I hope you do though, because the journey through this album is crafted in such a way that it should evoke some type of emotional response."

CGS Serge Programer Sequencer / Thank you LX

Published on Oct 11, 2012 by Dmitri SFC

"I asked LX how to divide a clock using only old serge modules. He said use the Sequencer module, patch the clock into it and reset it on a short loop, patch out of one of the active steps and clock is divided from original! I wanted to see if i could get the programmer to step backwards momentarily and on beat so i patched one of the clocks into one direction of the programer and patched the other into the peak and trough along with a slew then into the programer ."

PIANA - the Rasberry Pi synthesizer - built into a D-Link ADSL router box!

Published on Oct 11, 2012 by Pi Synth

"My ADSL router blew up a couple of years ago, and for reasons I never really understood, I kept the case. Now, with the Bristol Raspberry Jam just 3 days away, I wanted to be able to show off my PIANA in a nice case, not just nailed to a plank of wood, but I had totally run out of time to get anything rapid prototyped. And I need all of the next 3 days to cram in new features.

D-Link to the rescue!

So now Piana and the Teeny Tiny TV are all integrated into a sensible single unit. I just apply USB at the back for power, plug in a MIDI keyboard, and plug in a big amp at the back.

On Monday I shall be taking a Marshall ... nope, I am not kidding."

"Here's a video featuring my new 3 Octave Touch Capacitant Analogue Keyboard Controller! It's been a long time in development...but finally- no wires, being earthed to ground- nothing! I'm actually playing two prototypes here- a 1 octave test unit and the 3 Octave one. The left side 1 Octave is playing that 'vaporware' thing I've been working on- and the other is playing the new Macbeth micromac-r unit! A korg sequencer is driving osc3 and the filter on the micromac!"

"Seen here- the first working model of my 3 Octave Touch Capacitant Analogue Keyboard Controller! It's a first for me as I've never actually played 3 octaves of touch before!...I used to have a Wasp and a Synthi AKS. The action is just the same! It spits out 3 CVs- all with separate Glide functions- there is also Negative CV as an output. Theres a built in 4 waveform LFO and there is Pitch Bend too!"

RS-101 modifications

flickr set by Oakley Sound
(click for more)

"Have you seen the prices of the Roland RS-505 and the VP-330? Getting high aren't they? So this is my attempt to turn a rather battered old Roland RS-101 into a new and very useful machine.

The unit arrived in several pieces when I first got it. Over the period of a few months, when I could grab the time, I fixed it up and then modified it.

I upgraded the power supply, added the human voice circuitry from the VP-330, created a balanced stereo output, put a proper mixer for each tone, added an ensemble bypass switch for each tone and added the ensemble modulation section from the RS-505.

She's still not a pretty thing but a very useful addition to my little studio.

There are some more details about the modifications with each picture."

VERMONA PDD-501- SOVIET VINTAGE DELAY\REVERB\CHORUS EFFECTS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

" Up for sale this vintage soviet delay\reverb\flanger effects processor "Vermona PDD-501". It is a fully programmable digital pro-equipment produced in East Germany (GDR) in the 80s. The device got all inscriptions in English, huge & amazing sound and rock-solid construction with MIDI interface installed.

The front panel has buttons: Effect ON, Param. On, Up, Down, Time Coarse, Time Fine, Feedb.Level, Effect Level, LFO Speed, LFO Intens., Low Pass, MIDI Channel, Mains.

The processor is fully controllable either by Midi signals or by analog pedals (Hold\Delay inputs). The audio input\outputs are standart TRS 1\4 jacks, with stereo audio out (Inv.Mix - Left, Mix-Right). With 88 presets onboard you can program any parameter out of: time coarse, time fine, feedback-level, effect-level,LFO-speed, LFO-intensity, low-pass, midi-channel. "Vermona PDD-501" signal processor produces sound that differs from well-known western processor brands. Unit sounds really fantastic - very wide and clean set of effects like delay-reverb-flanger-chorus! (check the Demo section). The mains power of the unit is 220 volts. For 110v countries I`ll include voltage converter. The unit is fully tested & is in ideal 100% working condition."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 rev 2 w. MIDI SN 1008 with Updated OS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"As you can see from the pictures, this machine was generally well cared for, but it's not mint. I found extra knobs and SSM chips as well as some wheels and modulation pots and brackets. There's at least three SSM 2030 VCOs with tempco resistors, three SSM 2020 VCAs, one SSM 2040 VCF, one SSM 2050 Envelope generator. There's a couple other ICs and I'll update the listing when I remember what they are.

This Prophet 5 has been sent out to Greg Montalbano for a complete overhaul. Greg cleaned it up, recapped the power supply, replaced the key bushings, replaced the large multi-pin connector on PCB3, did a calibration and test, removed one of the regulators and updated the EPROMs (this reduces the load on the power supply so it runs cooler and is more stable). In addition, he changed the fixed power cord to a removeable one so switching between US and Euro power is easy (as well as making it easier to transport and set up). Finally, Greg installed a Kenton MIDI kit.

After I got it back, I installed the new Prophet 5 OS from Riku-Sakari Kujanen (his site is at analog.fi). His OS adds a second LFO, goes into edit mode simply by turning a knob or presseing a button, bypasses auto-tune on startup (great for those times when the power flickers) and shows which voice is being tuned when you do press the tune button (no more blank front panel leaving you guessing if the synth is dead), adds new unison modes (all 5 voices, a single voice - monophonic rev2 p-5!, and an option to select one or two voices in that mode), a mode to display the current value of a knob as well as indicating when you move that kknob to the current value in the preset (great for learning how sounds were created or for using the same amount of modulation or resonance of your favorite patches), a playable A-440 reference (tracks the keyboard for an additonal monophonic sine oscillator), and the factory presets are available to be loaded into user memory.

The second LFO in particular is a really nice feature that expands the Prophet 5's sonic abilities into new territories. Of course, you can disbale all the new features and only turn on the one(s) you can about and simply enjoy the ability to directly edit the patch like on the rev 3's (no more pressing the edit button). Although, I would say you are missing out if you don't at least try sequencing a fast note run using the new mono unison mode. Very tasty indeed.

So at this point, it's safe to say this particular Prophet 5 is one of a kind. I don't know anyone else on the planet with a Greg M serviced P-5 that has the Kenton MIDI kit and the new Riku OS installed.

The Prophet 5 (for those that don't know) had 2 oscillators, noise, a low pass filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, VCA, and an LFO. At the time, it had 2 more features that really made it stand apart from the crowd. The first was patch memories. The second, and possibly more important feature, was the poly mod section. This gave you incredible control over the type and amount of modulation that could be routed around the synth. It was really stunning to get this type of almost modular functionality in a polyphonic synth with memories."

Circuit-bent Monotron: LFO retriggered by Roland TR-626

Published on Oct 11, 2012 by KrassesZeug

"The low frequency oscillator (LFO) of a Korg Monotron synthesizer is retriggered by the trigger impulse from a Roland TR-626 drumcomputer. The trigger sequence is the same as the rim-shot pattern programmed in the TR-626. In this case the rim-shot sound is muted. The synchronization does also work if the tempo of the drumcomputer is changed. The audio of the TR-626 is passed thru the filter of the Monotron, allowing a significant improvement of the sound of this digital drum computer.
