Circuit Bent Yamaha PSS-140 V2, By FrankenMusik

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Nov 25, 2012 by FrankenMusik

"Recently bent pss-140. Second round for this model of keyboard. Data line modification, LFO, pitch mod, filter and tone mod added to this machine.

Heavy glitch keyboard, lends itself well for recording samples. Video is just some experimenting around with it."

www.frankenmusik.blogspot.com

Offered on eBay

"Modified YAMAHA keyboard with the following additions.

8 Data line modification / mixing
LFO with Frequency and Amount controls, acting on CPU
Tone control
Distortion filter
Pitch shift switch
Standard PSS-140 Features.
37 Keys
6 note Polyphony
100 Voices
10 Rhythms
Auto Accompaniment
H1/4" Headphone/AUX Output Jack
9-12VDC Power Jack (adapter is not included)
Approximate Dimensions: 22-1/4" x 7-5/8" x 2-3/8" (not including modifications)

Modified keyboard is built for glitches but does produce some drones as well. The 8 data line mod is made with 3 position switches (data on / data off / data mix). The 8 data lines are arranged into 4 pairs which allow for mixing of data lines. Data lines can be turned on and off so as to build new patches and sounds. LFO is routed directly to the CPU so as to give maximum glitching and effect on all patches and sounds, also causes keyboard to glitch without the use of Data Line switches. Tone and Distortion filter are directly connected to the keyboard circuit and are not able to be bypassed. Pitch drop effects all keys above the auto accompaniment, it lowers the pitch several octaves.

Standard keyboard operates as normal, with the exception of the added distortion and tone control. Two of the black keys are a bit stiff, but otherwise play normal. All functions are in good order, keyboard has some sighs of previous use (small scratches and scuffs). Battery cover is present.

Great instrument for studio work or in a live show. Lots of glitching sounds and textures, endless possibilities with mixing the 100 voices, tampering with the 10 rhythms and distorting the on board demo song..."

"Korg Poly800 Mark 1 Synthesizer

with loads of mods making an extreme uber synth with full MIDI spec and loads of new parameters:

The knobby hardware mods were professional installed by Circuitbenders.co.uk:

The "Moog slayer" mod which allows extreme filter resonance and manual control: Cutoff knob, Resonance knob, 12/24db switch.
The "FM800" mod : Source switch, FM Modulation depth knob
Audio Input: Level Knob, Path switch, Filter CV socket.
Hawk800 and Atomahawk boards both installed with all these extra features:

full MIDI spec whereas the original Poly800 had none.
Loads of new parameters: 4 LFOs, many LFO shapes, masses of modulation routings possible, free running or not.
Flash memory so no internal battery required.
7 sequencer memories (originally 1).
MIDI velocity sensitivity.
Moog Slayer and FM800 mods also included so they can be MIDI controlled.
Portamento Mono mode.
4 patch banks
and much much more.
All these mods turn the friendly Poly800 into an extremely versatile and deep synthesizer.

The synth itself is in good condition with the usual minor scratches of something this age. Supplied also is a printed Poly800 manual (not original) and Hawk800 manual, plus PSU."

Composition in Electronic Components: Experiment I

Uploaded by DeRaafMedia on Sep 17, 2011

"A musical composition. A composition maybe made from the point of view of a computer or other electronic device.

Do computers like us? Do they like the interaction we have with them.

We don't know. All we know is that we most probably slow them down with our presence, almost grind them to a hold.

There is a huge difference in the computational abilities between us. If we want to compute something, we need to go sit behind the keyboard and mouse, that slows down the computer. It needs to listen. Even if there where fast way's to interact, like speech or even brainwaves, it would slow the computer down.

This little experimental musical piece explores this. We got a little micro controller that happily sends it's serial communication to his companion, a little emulated SID chip. This serial communication consist of random registry entries so the SID can generate some random sounds.

But there is a opportunity for a human to interact with this micro controller, a PIR motion detector. If there is any movement registered this electronic circuit needs to slow it's activity down (by a factor of 10).

More info on the emulated SID chip:

"Rare chance to get hold of one of these, in great shape & fully working!*

This is a very basic analog synth, designed by David Cockerell who designed all the coolest EH stuff & also worked on the EMS synths, of course. It has a very growly, distinctive filter! Played from the 'keys' it's good-sounding & very straightforward (no envelope!) but spend a bit of time with it, mess around with the sliders while you're playing & you'll be surprised at the 'hidden' sounds you can get.

In very good shape, & I have cleaned the slider pots. If you check the clips on Youtube, you will notice they all sound awful. I think this needs to be played as much on the sliders as the keyboard, to manually open up the filter etc. Sliders were full of crackle & stiff to move, are now smooth & crackle-free. All the slider caps are original & intact, except the tip for the On/ Off switch which is missing- purely cosmetic! The cardboard back has a little wear around the sockets, & the battery clips in perfect condition, no sign of any leaks or corrosion at all.

There's a particularly nice PWM bass sound, very reminiscent of the riff of Being Boiled (Human League), which would have been a Korg 700s, I think?

*I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with the SENS setting. There is a Piezo mic stuck underneath the touchpad, which I'm guessing might re-trigger the filter if you tap the keys(?) Again, looking at Youtube, there are videos that claim to show it working, but I'm not convinced.. as far as I can tell, the Sens setting seems to have no effect on filter or triggering or anything..

Works from 2x 9v batteries, & has an internal speaker. I think this sounds great with batteries, through the speaker! There is a 1/4" Output socket & a 1/8" socket for a PSU **I have never used this with a PSU.. being EH you'd imagine it's 18v+, & I have a suitable PSU for my Electric Mistress, but I have a feeling this may be 9vAC. The only pic I've seen of a PSU with this (on Matrixsynth) was EH-branded & 9v- tricky to find any info on this! My advice- be careful & stick to batteries!!**"

"This is a classic old mono synth designed by Tim Orr of EMS in the early 1980's and was sold as a kit. Not too many of these left in good working order now and they are highly sought after by those wanting real analogue sound with knobs and buttons to play with! THis example has had a couple of mods to improve the signal to noise ratio on the outputs and the addition of an LFO LED light on the front panel that flashes in time with the LFO rate. I had one of these as a teenager and got hold of this one again recently with a view to making some mods of my own but time is not with me so I have to let it go now. The key contacts can be temperamental on these but this one is pretty good and currently they all work.

Also included is a paper and CD (.pdf) copy of the original Electronics Today magazine articles that describe all the processes as well as construction details. Very useful - I learnt more about how it works for these than I ever knew back in the 80's!"
