Super Fat Analog Roland Guitar Synth - GR-300 VG-99 Control Voltage MIDI Demo

Published on Nov 26, 2012 by WayneJoness

"http://www.joness.com/gr300/vwham.htm Inspired by the original Analogger GR-300 video using control voltages [embed added below], this clip shows a simple VG-99 GR-300 patch being modulated using MIDI CC commands for filter cutoff and resonance. With its built in effects, including poly compression which puts a compressor on each individual string, the VG-99 is capable rich, thick, analog synthesizer tones. In this demo, the two VCOs of the GR-300 are layered in 5ths for a fatter sound."

Update: some additional info from WayneJoness:
"Quite some time ago, I was really impressed with a demo of the Roland GR-300 that Analogger did, using a MIDI sequence, then converting the MIDI sequence to control voltages using a Roland MPU-101, and then taking the output of the MPU-101 to the CV/filter pedal input on the GR-300.

So I thought: couldn't you do this directly with the VG-99? It would be easy to make a basic MIDI sequence that would send MIDI CCs to the VG-99. I came up with a simple pattern and added a drum loop. See the video below. Most of this video is me playing a four note pattern on the VG-99: E, G, F and Bb, with the VCOs tuned in 5ths. In some sections I added a top note on the high E string, and in other sections, I just played minor chords: Em, Gm, Fm and Bbm. I added in a low bass at one point, with the second VCO pitched one octave down.

I used poly compression and regular compression to reduce the natural attack of the GR-300 to give it more of a keyboard sound. Anyway, I was surprised at how analog the entire thing sounds, it fell together quickly, and I spent as much time tweaking the video as I did playing the track! Because of the nature of the GR-300 waveform, and the fact that the guitar almost never plays the same note the same way twice, I think this is very convincing analog simulation, on par with the best virtual analog synths."

Update 9:47PM: Here's the Roland GR-300 video referenced in the description above.

Roland GR-300 Guitar Synth (filter modulation)

Uploaded by Analogger on Jul 18, 2007

"Greetings everybody! Please check out my new Myspace music page when you get a chance. The project goes by the name "Mr. Dithers." thanks!

http://www.myspace.com/mrdithersnoisebox
I have this immaculate Roland GR-300 guitar synth and the G-707 guitar controller. (I have the 505 as well which actually works better with the GR-300 but I wanted to test the 707 with the 24-pin cable I bought on Ebay!)) I am not really a guitar player but wanted to use the 300 for textures - kind of like what Andy Summers did with his on certain Police tunes. The GR-300 is not midi in any way. It is triggered by a guitar equipped with a GK-1 pickup and rare 24-pin cable. The GR-300 features six voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs)-one for each string. It also features a hexa-fuzz unit (again one for each string) which can be layered with the VCOs. You can also blend the actual clean guitar sound as well. The key to the sound is that the VCOs and Hexa-fuzz go through a beautiful fat 24dB analog filter. The cutoff and resonance are adjusted from the guitar. However, in the back of the unit you will find an input for an expression pedal. This is designed to sweep the filter to give you wah-wah efx. This is for all the synth geeks out there who are compulsive 'tone chasers.'"

Note this is the second one listed today.  You can find the first one here.

via the listing: " There are no playability/audio/functionality issues with this Liberation (though I was not able to test the external synth control which is on the power supply interface box).

One of the MM5823 frequency divider chips went bad about 5 years ago and I replaced it (with a Flatkeys reengineered clone chip) last year. It sounds indistinguishable from the original. There are chips in the paint/finish on the body of the synth - on corners especially, see pictures for details. One of the back plates screws was missing so it has been replaced.

What is Included:
- Liberation synthesizer
- power supply / audio interface / external synth control box
- original power supply-to-synth cable

- original road case
- black leather strap (probably original, but I'm not certain)
- 4 rack screws with washers (original? who knows - but they are in a little zip lock bag which makes me think perhaps not)
- 1 spare Flatkeys MM5823 clone chip (I bought 2 when the one in the Liberation went bad, more info at flatkeys.co.uk )
- the original key to lock/unlock the latches on the roadcase
- original warranty card

Eternal Witness pt.1

Eternal Witness pt.1 from VoltageCtrlR on Vimeo.
"After chillin' under the moon light last night absorbing the lunar frequencies I was motivated to re-explore a synth patch I made the night prior...
I call it the eternal witness patch, it's a pretty complex patch involving almost all of the synth modules in my 18u setup.. .it's a blend of a few sub systems that I can continue to explore for as long as it stays interesting. I have some rhythmic elements, melody and lots of randomness that I can weave in and out of for what seems like an eternity. The random part of the patch is really engaging and adds an element of surprise. I plan on making a few more compositions with this patch before I tear it down and start on a new sonic journey. Until then I will continue to witness what kind of energy comes out of this living machine of sound and vibration.

Korg Monotron Hacked into Gesture Synth called the Borgatron.
Published on Nov 16, 2012 by SolarisBorgatron
"Korg Monotron modified by replacing analog pots with digital ones that are controlled by a wii nunchuck in one hand and a pot selector in the other.
The x,y accelerometers and the x,y joy thumbstick are mapped to individual digital pots.
Meaning that you can wave the nunchuck around and make lots of complex sounds. The monotron ribbon has also been removed and a visual basic sequencer directly drives the monotron. So from monotron to Borgatron. Its an ugly beast only its mother could love.
So really it is a form of Gesture synth as you have to move your arms about and strike a pose.... possibly very good for Electro Vogue-ing."

Tone2 Rayblaster Feature Overview

Published on Nov 26, 2012 by Tone2Audiosoftware
Tone2 Rayblaster Feature Overview

"Rayblaster employs a new synthesis technique called Impulse Modelling Synthesis (IMS)

Opposed to using looped waveforms, Impulse Modelling Synthesis creates its sound by using short bursts of energy, which are then combined to form its sound. Allowing free manipulation of pitch, time and timbre in real-time, to create complex compositions.

IMS no longer requires a separate filter section, its oscillators can authentically mimic the filter sound of other synthesizers and filters, using one of the factory impulse presets or by simply importing one of your own impulses. RayBlaster is capable of modelling both the sound of existing filters, as well as create completely new artificial filters, exclusive to Rayblaster.

Next to importing filter characteristics into its oscillators, Rayblaster also offers resynthesize options to import the waveform of any other source or synthesizer. By using one of the quick importers, or by directly importing your sample into one of Rayblaster's four oscillators, providing a large amount of possible wave-shapes, all capable of being morphed in real-time.

RayBlaster ships with an inspiring library of over 500 outstanding presets from some of the world's top sound designers. Many complex sounds such as arpeggiators, vocals or drumloops automatically synchronize to the BPM.
For fast & easy access to the specific sound you desire, all sounds are arranged into categories, making them easy to locate whether for live performance or within a professional studio environment.

For more information on Rayblaster and our other products, please visit the Tone2 website at http://www.tone2.com"

The problem with distorted toy keyboards

Published on Nov 26, 2012 by organfairy
"More than once people have asked me why the sound from a toy keyboard often gets distorted when the headphone output - which is often the only output - is connected to the computers line input. The answer is that the headphone signal is too powerfull for the computer to handle. Therefore I use an attenuator box to dampen the sound so it fits the computer. In this video I show one of the ways to make one.

The music is my version of the completely insane "Aihto" that was composed by the equally mad band Caramba. It was a song that parodied the stereotypical Japanese way of singing. No offense intended.

I used my collection of Casio keyboards: SA-1, SA-3 SA-20, CZ-101, PT-88, RAP-1, CT-510, and CT-380."

"The new "KORG iPolysix" polyphonic synth studio for the iPad mini & iPad!
Special Introductory Sale - 50% OFF! Offer valid until December 31th!

iPolysix is an analog polyphonic synthesizer that's been carefully designed to take full advantage of the 7.9-inch display of the new iPad mini as well as the iPad. Bringing together a sequencer, drum machine, and even a mixer, it transforms your iPad or iPad mini into the ultimate analog synth studio. Pack an amazing set of early-'80s analog equipment into your iPad, and time-travel back to the dawn of polyphonic synthesizers!

❮Highlights❯
● The world-wide best-selling Polysix polyphonic synthesizer, fully replicated on your iPad
● Use the newly developed Polyseq polyphonic step sequencer to control the Polysix
● A music production environment including two Polysix units, a drum machine, and a mixer
● Dual Kaoss Pads with chordal support make it easy for anyone to play analog synth sounds
● Polyshare powered by SoundCloud lets you publish, share, and remix songs with iPolysix users

☐ The world-wide best-selling Polysix polyphonic synthesizer
Korg's Polysix, a six-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer, went on sale in 1981. While a popular synthesizer of that time was able to produce only five notes simultaneously, the Polysix had six-note polyphony, and its name was an expression of its designers' pride. iPolysix uses Korg's proprietary "CMT" (Component Modeling Technology) to simulate the actual electronic circuits of the original unit, perfectly reproducing the original Polysix.

☐ The newly developed Polyseq polyphonic step sequencer
Polyseq is a polyphonic step sequencer that provides up to 64 steps, newly developed in order to take full advantage of the Polysix's capabilities. Polyseq provides a different operating feel than a conventional piano-roll sequencer or even a step sequencer; it's a new yet somehow familiar experience, as if you were retracing the evolution of electronic musical instruments. Don't miss the opportunity to try out this perfect match; the Polysix+Polyseq.

☐ A music production environment including two Polysix units, a drum machine, and a mixer
iPolysix has been created as a professional music production tool. In addition to two Polysix units, it provides a six-part drum machine, and an analog mixer that's reminiscent of the KMX-8 mixer. You'll have everything you need to produce great sounding music. Surrounded by analog equipment, you'll imagine that you've time-traveled back to the early '80s.

☐ Dual Kaoss Pads with chordal support
The large multi-touch display shows two Kaoss Pads which you can control using both hands to perform music. This enables creative performance even for those who have no musical knowledge. These Kaoss Pads have been customized for iPolysix to allow not only single-note performance, but also chordal playing with just one finger; a new experience made possible only by a combination of new and old technology, the Polysix+Kaoss Pad.

☐ Polyshare powered by SoundCloud lets you publish, share, and remix songs with iPolysix users around the world
Polyshare is a function for iPolysix users to share their songs. It's based on SoundCloud, the song sharing service favored by music creators. You can make your song available to iPolysix users around the world simply by uploading the song directly from the app. You can download and upload remixable tracks. It's easy to enjoy remixing and collaboration with users around the world.

*You'll need a SoundCloud account to use Polyshare. A variety of account types are available. For details, please refer to the SoundCloud http://soundcloud.com. Use of SoundCloud is subject to the usage conditions specified by the SoundCloud company, including prohibition of copyrighted songs.

Compatibility
- iPad mini or iPad series (iPad 2 or later is recommended)
- iPolysix is a dedicated iPad app.
