AE FOND KISS by Robert Burns

Published on Jan 5, 2013 copperleaves·57 videos

"I have known this song for many years, but I had always heard it sung by classically trained sopranos and tenors, so I never dared to sing it. A couple of weeks ago, I heard a rendition of it performed here on YT by Scottish popular singer Eddi Reader, and I loved it! So I decided to take a crack at it myself.

Robert Burns is Scotland's poet/ambassador to the world, and this song (only one of many that he wrote) is for me one of the most poignant songs of unrequited love that has ever been written. I'm not going to bore everyone with the history of this song. If you are curious about it, here is the Wikipedia entry that will tell you the whole story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ae_Fond_Kiss

The instrument I am playing in this video I call the "tibicen" (this is the Latin word for "piper"). I devised this instrument myself because I love to sing with the pipes but it is impossible to play them and sing at the same time. The tibicen is entirely electronic and consists of two parts (only one of which can be seen in this video). There is a keyboard "chanter" which sits on the knees of the performer and can play in any key over a range of many octaves. The other part is a pedal board similar to an organ (which is not visible in the video) which plays the drones, and can change keys and harmonies very much like the Irish uilleann pipes.

Part of the problem with pipes (and with the hurdy gurdy which I also play) is that they are extremely loud and their volume cannot be controlled by the player so they tend to drown out a singer. With the tibicen, every aspect of the sound, volume, slides, range, etc., can be controlled, and it is ideal for an electronic musician like myself."

via the listing: "This is a rare synthesizer serial number 522 out of 1000 made

Rather than list all of the EML101 specifications which are easily available online, I'd like to describe this particular synthesizer. I am the original owner and purchased this instrument in the mid-1970s. I went up to Vernon Connecticut, met Norman Milliard who was one of the owners of EML and picked up my instrument from the factory. I was intrigued with the amount of engineering that went into the construction of this instrument. For example, the way the instrument is constructed, the unit folds into itself to make a carrying case. So much of the engineering and construction was well thought out and was superior to what existed at the time. As a music educator, I used this instrument for demonstrations only. I have retired, and the instrument has been sitting in my house not being used and regrettably I must sell it.

Everything on this instrument is original. It is in working condition but because of its age and lack of use, some refurbishing is going to be required. The following are some examples of what would be required:

The original handle is deteriorating and doesn't feel very secure (this means replace it if you're set on using it. There are some typical rusty spots on the external metal hardware. Three of the original rubber feet are missing. There are some light surface scratches on the outside of the case and a small chip (or two) - check the pics. Several of the Alan – Bradley controls are going to need cleaning. I am sure that some additional internal cleaning on the keyboard will be required but all keys are level and play well / feel fine. These examples should give you some idea of what this instrument might need.

I will include a good amount of literature, too numerous to mention it all.

The owners manual of course is included as well as original patch diagrams sheets. Also included are factory directions such as tuning the oscillators as well as mods that the owner can make. The two mods I made were the addition of a switch to separate the high filter and low filter to create a band reject filter, and a separate external sampler input.

Most important is the inclusion of the schematics for the electronic circuitry. This wasn't easy to obtain, but at the end of EML’s run, thankfully they were willing to give up the schematics to an owner who was truly appreciative of all the work that went into designing this incredible instrument."

MARK JENKINS "Peter Gunn" from the CD "EX1GENE"

Published on Jan 5, 2013 MarkJenkinsMusic·22 videos

"MARK JENKINS 'Peter Gunn' from the CD 'EX1GENE'. Composed by Henry Mancini, arranged by Keith Emerson, performed by Mark Jenkins on the Yamaha EX-1. Drums, sound effects, fx, mixing; Apple Mac. Filmed and edited by Mark Jenkins. CD "EX1GENE" by Mark Jenkins out now through Amazon and www.markjenkins.co"

"'Peter Gunn', an award-winning TV detective show theme composed by Henry Mancini, became a staple of Emerson Lake & Palmer's live concerts in the late 1970's and Mark Jenkins first performed the piece in 1985. 'I liked my 1980's version but the opportunity to recreate the piece effectively using the same instrumentation as Keith Emerson but with the added benefits of the latest computer editing techniques and sound effects was very exciting', Mark explains. 'My most recent albums and live performances have all been of sequencer-based iPad music, so multitracking a quite demanding piece played entirely by hand again was a great experience'.

'Peter Gunn' is the first video track released to promote Mark's new CD 'EX1GENE'. 'A lot of the other tracks owe more to world music, krautrock and Brian Eno's ambient style, so this progressive rock piece makes a rousing end to the album. I'll be creating some more abstract videos though for the more chillout oriented tracks on the CD'.

Mark Jenkins will be in concert in the UK and overseas during 2013, though the EX-1, which weighs something over 480 pounds, will definitely not be appearing on stage...

Return of the Sigma

Published on Jan 5, 2013 spacemusicuk·7 videos

"Utterly shameless synth noodling.

I did this a few months back after digging my old Korg Sigma out of the spare room and dusting it off. I bought it secondhand in 1989, it was pretty old and beaten up already then, and it's never been serviced and has sat completely unused for the past 6 years or so. At first it didn't make any sound at all, but after leaving it on a while and wiggling all the pots a bit, it started to cough and splutter back to life. I really liked the noisy, slightly broken sound - the crackly filtered hiss makes it sound very woodwindy and reedy, like some weird alien durduk.

The Sigma is a marvelously expressive beast. Two X-Y joysticks, one controlling pitchbend and noise/vibrato and the other controlling high and low pass filters, and, unusually for a synth of this vintage, keyboard aftertouch controlling vibrato."

"SpheroSampler is a unique sampler that records and plays audio using two touch controlled 3D spheres. It has a simple but effective synth that is played using an XY pad, and also records through the mic. You can also use an adapter to plug in a mic or even your guitar. I really like the whole concept of this app, especially the way you can record and play back at any speed, both forward and reverse. You can create variation in the speed, and constantly direct the play head to new places on the recording. This is a free app, with a $0.99 in-app purchase for saving and exporting recorded and mixed wav files through iTunes. At first I was disappointed that only iTunes exporting was offered, but soon heard back from the developer that Audio Copy & Paste will be supported in the next update. I've really enjoyed using this app and love the endless creative possibilities it offers. It's great to see new concepts for sampling like this, and with Audio Copy & Paste coming soon, I have to rate this ... A Killer App!

"Quadrature Oscillator (QUO)

The QUADRATURE OSCILLATOR (QUO) provides signals and features which make it ideal for controlling the Quad Panner . It generates two sine waves which are always displaced 90 degrees in phase from one another . This phase difference provides exactly the correct relationship for swirling a sound through quadraphonic space in a circular pattern (using the Quad Panner) . Since the Oscillator has a basic range from longer than 20 seconds per cycle to 500cycles per second, many effects can be produced . Swirling a sound at an audio rate produces interesting spatial and modulative effects. Additional features include linear VCA's for each of the outputs. so that spatial swirls can be made to decrease in size, effectively spiralling inward . A HOLD input"freezes" the outputs whenever pulsed high . Thus a swirl can be stopped at a given location, with the sound just "hanging there"until operation is resumed . Switches on the Panel allow disabling the oscillator, a feature which has been found to be useful for live performance .The use of this module is not limited to Quad Panning . The phase separation between the oscillator's outputs provides for many interesting cross-fading effects when they are used to control other Serge modules.

Dual Transient Generator (DTG)

The DUAL TRANSIENT GENERATOR (DTG) provides two independent outputs with voltage controllable rise and fall times. This module is identical to the Dual Universal Slope Generator except that it does not have all of the front panel features. This module is a useful, space-effective unit to be used for many of the same functions as the Dual Universal Slope Generator. Common uses of the Dual Transient Generator are for simple "AR"-type envelope generation, as a dual voltage-controlled low frequency oscillator, or as a voltage-controlled clock (especially suitable for clocking the Touch Keyboard Sequencer or any of the Sequencer Programmers). These functions can be patched with the Dual Universal Slope Generator, but since many of the features are left unused in these patches, the Dual Transient Generator provides the same function while using less front Panel space.

"VCTimeGen Clock (TGC)

The VC TimeGen Clock has the left cell "blue" out being an asymmetrical tri wave & "red"out being a 50% duty cycle square wave output which stays constant through the manual "freq' POT range in combination with the "both" position selected w/ external CV -- BUT with the ability to modify the duty cycle (pulsewidth) of the output(s) using external CV source from either the front or the back ofthe pulse by selecting "rise" or "fall" on the CV source select switch. That way you can create syncopation in the rhythm patches & pulse width mod in the audio range use.

The right cell has DTG functionality, just like the CV TimeGen OSC.

÷N Comparator (NCOM)

The ÷ N COMPARATOR (NCOM) consists of two sections: a comparator and a voltage-controlled pulse divider. The divider section outputs a pulse once every "N" comparator pulse, where "N" is a number from 1 to 31, settable with a control voltageat the divider's VC input (or manually via the divider's control knob). Additionally, the Divider outputs a staircase wave with "N" steps. This will produce whole-tone steps when plugged into the 1 V/Oct input of aVCO.

This module has two distinct areas of use (in addition to the normal functions of the comparator):

For audio frequencies, the divider can be set to output sub-divided frequencies with digital precision. Output frequency depends on "N". If "N"= 2, 3, 4, etc., the output frequencies will be an octave, an octave and a fifth. or two octaves below the input, respectively. Because "N"is voltage controllable, arpeggios and various melodies can easily be programmed. The nature of this type of division (integer division), results in frequencies that fall along the sub-harmonic series, a series that has great tonal charm.
For sub-audio frequencies, the divider acts like a counter, outputting a pulse only after "N" number of input pulses. Input pulses can be fairly random, or regular. This capability is especially powerful for determining tempos and rhythmic patterns when using several sequencers (especially if the "N" vc input is taken from one of a sequencers rows of controls). In a more random situation, using a microphone preamp/detector as input. the divider might be set to count how many times a sound of a certain loudness will have occurred, and be set to trigger an event upon reaching the count. Since the count can be made variable (from 1 to 31), fairly complex and subtle inter-actions can be generated.
Wizardry: With feedback, this can be patch-programmed to oscillate. You can vary the frequency by turning the divider control knob. Using this module to divide clock pulses is an obvious application; it is also useful for dividing high-frequency audio.

DualAnalog Shift Register w/ input attenuator pot (2ASR)

The ANALOG SHIFT REGISTER (ASR) is a sequential sample and hold module for producing arabesque-like forms in musicalspace (see diagram). Whenever pulsed, the previously held voltage is sent down the line to three consecutive outputs to produce the electrical equivalent of a canonical musical structure. A pulse output permits linking two or more Analog Shift Registers together to form longer patterns.

Quantizer(QUAN)
The QUANTIZER (QUAN) provides a simple means to turn any control voltage into voltage steps corresponding to well tuned (equal - tempered) tones of the musical scale. It is scaled to 1volt per octave. Thus, a zero to +5 volt envelope at the Quantizer's input produces a staircase of voltages corresponding to a chromatic scale spanningfive octaves.

If patched to the 1 volt per octave input of an oscillator tuned to "E", a gradual slope of 1 volt applied to the input of the Quantizer will produce the following steps of the musical scales:
E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D# - E. (normal chromaticscale)

If the 1/6 Scale Select is HIGH, then the scale produced will be:
E - F# - G# - A# - C - D - E. (whole - tone scale)

If the 1/3 Scale select is HIGH, then the scale produced will be:
E - G# - C - E. (scale of major third steps)

If both the 1/6 and 1/3 inputs are high, the scale will be:
E - F - G# - A - C - C# - E. (alternating half - step/minor third step)

Since the Scale Select inputs can be activated very quickly, the Quantizer can produce a very wide variety of tonal effects, quickly moving between four different types of musical scales(chromatic, whole - tone, the augmented triad, and a six - step major - minor scale often heard in certain oriental musics).

The Quantizer features six channels, as a "stand - alone" module, and takes up two inches of panel space. Accuracy of the Quantizer is 3 cents maximum deviation from the ideal equal -tempered semi - tone over a five octave range (i.e. just about the limits ofpitch sensitivity of the human ear). Response time for all channels is about 8 milliseconds."

Dual Comparator (COM)
The DUAL COMPARATOR (COM) provides several often useful house-keeping functions within the Serge system:

Logical Decisions: If the + input is greater than the - input, then the output will be high. If not, then the output will be low.
Level Detection. A pulse will be generated whenever an input voltage reaches a pre-set threshold. For example, when an envelope detector reaches a certain loudness level, it can be used with the Comparator to generate a pulse to activate or de-activate other events programmed within the synthesizer.

Voltage variable pulse width modulation of any of the Serge oscillators.
"Squaring" audio signals, whereby frequency related pulses are derived from an input signal. These pulses can be used for frequency sub-division (via a Dual Slope Generator or Sequencer), or as raw audio, rich in harmonic content.
In addition to the +/- inputs, eachof the Comparators include a front-panel knob to manually set a threshold.

"Audio Mixer w/ phase switch (3x1) (AMX)

The Audio Mixer is a three-in/one-out manual mixer with a phase switch on input 3.

Variable Q VCF (VCFQ)
The VARIABLE Q VCF (VCFQ) is an excellent general-purpose VCF offering simultaneous low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch (band-reject) outputs. The resonance (Q) of this filter is dynamically variable by manual or voltage control. The VCF Q has two signal inputs. One incorporates an automatic gain control to prevent the filter from overloading at high Q settings. The second input has a level control so that the percussive effects of overloading the filter can be exploited. When a pulse is applied to the Trigger input, the filter will ring, producing a damped waveform similar to that produced by striking a resonant object. The nature of this ringing is controlled by the Q and the filter frequency. Percussive effects ranging from clicks to the soundof wood blocks and bell tones can be produced and controlled. This ringing effect can be used in conjunction with signals applied to either of the audio inputs to achieve highly controlled complex tonal qualities.

Other comments:
A nice bit of flexibility is the "LO" setting that turns it into a CV processor! ... Recent updates to the filter's circuitry are noticeable as well- Its much easier to get tube-type harmonic warmth just by nudging the gain control. The feedback and overdrive characteristics have also been tweaked to be more musically useful... This filter will not oscillate unless you patch it up for feedback... Hi-Lo range switch for fantastic and unique audio/cv applications - hit it with a pulse, get an unbelievably slow damped sine wave.Calibrated 1 v/oct and attenuated cv inputs, just like the oscillators... Since it's a multi-mode filter, it's 12 dB/oct roll-off. You may want a LPF with more 'bite' in some applications. I think the bandpass and all pass sections of this filter have 6 dB/oct roll-off.

"The Serge Modular Systems NEW TIMBRAL OSCILLATOR (NTO) is the state-of--the-art VCO, featuring exceptional range, superb temperature stability, and accurate tracking. Dynamic depth frequency modulation and voltage control of waveform allow unprecedented control over a wide range of sound qualities.

EXPONENTIAL 1 VOLT/OCTAVE RESPONSE
Exponential response parallels the response of human hearing perception as well as musical pitch structure. With multiple oscillators, each must respond exponentially to control voltages to allow transposition from key to key and to produce alternative equal-tempered tunings such as quarter and third tones. In addition, the one-volt-per-octave response assures that the New Timbral Oscillator is compatible with most keyboard and computer controllers.

ACCURATE TRACKING
When two or more oscillators are tuned, it is expected that they will remain in tune throughout their entire range (in other words, that they track). Even two oscillators which track within a fraction of a semitone will be out of tune at the extremities of their range. Therefore, the New Timbral Oscillators have been designed so that any two will track within one cycle/second throughout their entire musical range.

TEMPERATURE STABILITY
Instability of pitch with changes in temperature is the criticism of most synthesizer VCO's. Performers are aware of the disastrous effects of temperature when they must desperately re-tune oscillators that have drifted during a live performance. The temperature sensitive components are kept at an even 120 degrees by a solid-state "oven". Thus temperature stability is guaranteed from 50 degrees to 100 degrees F.

"About the Arp Little Brother 2953 -

The Arp Little Brother was manufactured between 1975-1977

The Little Brother is a monophonic synthesizer that can connect to another analog synth to become an added sound.

The Little Brother has a single voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with selectable waveforms, and a sub-octave divider that can produce up to three additional tones simultaneously at -1, -2, and -3 octave intervals.

It also has a low frequency oscillator (LFO), vibrato, and a pitch bend knob. However, it has no voltage controlled filter (VCF), voltage controlled amplifier (VCA), or envelope generator (EG, AR, or ADSR).

When used with other Arp synths to "fatten up" their sounds, the Little Brother's audio output had to be patched into the external audio input of its companion synthesizer, essentially adding an extra VCO and LFO to the system.

The Little Brother utilizes 1v/octave CV.

The back of the unit has the following:
- 1/8" jacks for CV In, CV Out, Gate In, Gate Out, Trigger In, Trigger Out, and LFO Out.
- RCA jacks for Audio In and Audio Out."
