"Get the Moog Sub Phatty right here: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SubPhatty/
Performance demo starts at 4:25

Sweetwater's Director of Production Optimization, Daniel Fisher, demonstrates the very cool Moog Sub Phatty 25-key synthesizer. Daniel really shows off the performance potential of the Sub Phatty, thanks to its generous array of dedicated knobs.

Daniel explains the architecture of the Sub Phatty and its connections before demonstrating just some of the sounds you can create with it. First he plays a range of sounds with just the Sub Phatty, then through some the Moog Clusterflux and MF-104M Delay pedals to show even more creative potential.

Enjoy the demo, and call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for more information on the Moog Sub Phatty. And click the link above to see the Sub Phatty in hi-res detail!"

Roland JX10 SN 684652 with Colin Fraser Sysex Update

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Full details on the update here.

"Like many JX10 owners without a PG800 programmer I was disappointed to find that Roland had made a complete arse of the midi implementation - there is no way to edit sounds via midi.
So I got hold of the service manual and the datasheet for the 6303 processor used in the assigner board, and set about dis-assembling the firmware, in the hope of finding the 'bug' that stopped SysEx sound edits working.

In the process I learned a lot about how the JX works, how the PG800 works, and how NOT to write firmware for a synthesizer. The Roland software engineers must have either been under real pressure to get the job finished, or they simply got the office cleaner to write it, because it is a poorly structured, badly written mess.

When I found the code for SysEx reception there was only a slight hint that they had planned to implement editing via midi, no 'broken' code for it, but with a little thought, I found a way to hack it in there myself..."

Plan B Model 13 Dual Timbral Gate

via this auction

"The Model 13 is an enhanced derivative of the infamous Buchla 292 Low Pass Gate.

Like all Lowpass gates, at the heart of the Dual Timbral Gate is a device known as a Vactrol -- a small electro-optical coupler which opens the filter with it's characteristic ringing qualitiy. As sonically compelling as they are, Vactrols however are not perfect. While some of their anomalies are desirable (ringing for instance), others are not. Long story short - Vactrols leak. Not vactrol juice, but sound passed through them, even when you're telling them to be quiet. While it can't be eliminated without jeopardizing the ring, it can be improved upon and the Model 13 does just that, decreasing the nominal leakage associated with other LPGs by a factor of 10, from 3mv to just a under one third of a mv...barely audible even in at very high volumes.

Each gate is fitted with an offset knob which serves two functions: If no VC is applied, they act as manual level controls. Once a VC is patched they act as low threshold offsets, as the gate will not close below the level set on the pot. A three position switch selects the modes of operation: Amplitude only (no filtering), LowPass (high filtering) or Both (a combination of Amplitude and Lowpass settings). The M13 has been further enhanced by a dedicated crossfading sum output, allowing for a sonic mixtures of the information passed through both. One application for this output being when both gates are set to amplitude mode, your DTG becomes a handy 2 in, 1 out mixer!"

An 8-octave polyphonic tone generator

Published on Jan 21, 2013 organfairy·359 videos

"This is a simple tone generator - well, simple in the sense that it might look very complicated. But in reality it is a simple circuit that is repeated twelve times. I use the well known LM555 - actually in this case it is called NE555 but they are practically the same - and an HCF4024 binary counter or frequency divider. It is pretty much an integrated circuit version of the tone generator from the typical analog organ of the late 1960's and early 1970's. And cheap too...

The music is played on Yamaha HE-8 and Technics SX-C600 organs and the rhythm is from a Roland CR-1000 that runs in sync with the Yamaha's own drum machine."

Antiquity Music Debuts the Wheelharp at NAMM 2013

It looks like the Wheelharp [video posted here] is coming to NAMM. Hall E at Booth #1280

"LOS ANGELES, CA - In anticipation for the forthcoming 2013 NAMM Show, Antiquity Music premieres the Wheelharp, a groundbreaking keyboard musical instrument that gives the player the ability to orchestrate a full chromatic scale of sixty-one (61) actual bowed strings at one's own fingertips, almost like having a real chamber string orchestra at hand.

With an exotic Victorian profile, curved keyboard, and stunning rosette appointments, the instrument's appearance is equally as breathtaking as its audible character. It utilizes a patent-pending action to translate the player's subtle fingerings into a range of bowing intensities, and comes equipped with a full damper system and an electronic pickup system, allowing individuals to sculpt astonishingly beautiful and complex sounds.

The Wheelharp is available in a Radial Model (curved keyboard) and a Linear Model (traditional straight keyboard), and in several ranges. Art case options are available upon request.

Antiquity Music will be exhibiting the Wheelharp at the NAMM Show, January 24-27, 2013, at Booth # 1280.

Bob Moog Foundation to Inspire Winter NAMM 2013

"Bob Moog Foundation to Inspire the 2013 NAMM Show through Legendary Instruments and Archival Exploration

January 21, 2013 (Asheville, NC) – The Bob Moog Foundation (BMF) will celebrate the indelible nature of the synthesizer pioneer’s legacy at the 2013 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. Beginning on Thursday, January 24, NAMM attendees will have opportunities to see and hear demonstrations of vintage Moog instruments and explore rarely seen archival material from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives.

Front and center at the Foundation’s booth at NAMM (#5307) will be rock musician Erik Norlander’s modular Moog synthesizer known as the Wall of Doom. Encompassing more than 100 modules (including 22 oscillators), many built between 1967 and 1972, the Wall of Doom is a touring configuration of the legendary synthesizer that gave birth to an industry. Norlander and the Foundation collaborated three years ago to reconfigure the massive instrument into a portable, rack-mounted version. Four of the instrument’s six racks will be on display at NAMM, a number limited by the BMF booth’s floor space.

Marc Doty, Archive and Education Specialist for the Bob Moog Foundation, will demonstrate the Wall of Doom at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday.

Also featured will be one of the few duophonic Minimoogs in the world. Recently donated to the BMF by Tom Coppola, the Minimoog was modified by Doug Slocum of Synthetic Sound Labs in the late 1970s. Of particular note is Coppola’s use of the synthesizer to create the signature three-note Duracell sound. Slocum will be present to demonstrate the instrument at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

On Saturday, January 26, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room 203 A-B, the Bob Moog Foundation will present “Exploring Bob Moog’s Archives with Michael Boddicker” at NAMM’s H.O.T. Zone. BMF Executive Director Michelle Moog-Koussa and Marc Doty will join Michael Boddicker, legendary Grammy Award-winning film composer (Flashdance, 1984) and session synthesist (Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie). Boddicker is three-time N.A.R.A.S. Most Valuable Player "Synthesizer" award winner and an MVP Emeritus. He was winner of Keyboard magazine's Reader's Poll Award - Best Studio Synthesist in 1986 and 1987 and Best Session Player in 1988.

Together, the panel will explore rare archival material including photographs, project notes, vintage catalogs, audio from restored reel-to-reel tapes, vintage ads and articles, and more. Boddicker, who has over 700 album credits to his name, will lend a musician’s perspective, speaking from his vast experience with the wide variety of early Moog instruments used throughout his career, including some that are quite rare.

In addition, the Foundation is encouraging NAMM attendees to bring their photos of Bob Moog at NAMM to the BMF booth, where we’ll create a “Remembering Bob at NAMM” wall.

Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living

Published on Jan 21, 2013 MoogMusicInc·222 videos

"In honor of the new Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer's release today, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam 'Lilfuchs' Fuchs collaborated on a short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. You can hear the new Sub Phatty analog synthesizer in Flying Lotus's original score for the animation."

"New Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer Sets New Standard for Analog Sound Design

ASHEVILLE, NC – January 21, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to introduce the Sub Phatty analog synthesizer, a 25 full-size key, 31 knob production instrument that melds the soul and functionality of vintage analog synthesizers with new and unique sound design tools. Building on the tradition of Moog’s highly successful Phatty family, the Sub Phatty grinds and screams with a uniquely aggressive voice — making it the new standard for synth bass, analog percussion, and a wide range of sound design applications.

The engineers at Moog Music have reimagined the Sub Phatty’s sound engine. The instrument features two variable waveshape oscillators that perform with extreme clarity and accuracy while requiring almost no warm-up time. Users can simply power up, dial in settings, and put their fingers to work on the keys to summon crisp and detailed waveforms with vibrant sound that brims with high-frequency harmonic content, yet stays true to the rich sonic density that has become synonymous with Moog synthesizers.

“We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth,” said Mike Adams, President of Moog Music. “One of the great advantages of the Sub Phatty is its ability to conjure aggressive sounds that cut through a dance mix, stand out on-stage, or burn up the studio. We think that everyone from producers and sound designers to DJs and synthesists will have a blast using it.”

The Sub Phatty’s filter includes the transformative new Multidrive circuit, a unique combination of OTA distortion and FET drive, which serves as the sparkplug in the instrument’s powerful sound. At low settings, Multidrive adds warmth and width; when pushed, it delivers a screaming snarl that is highly reactive to resonance, waveshape, and oscillator level.

Users can access a total of 16 definable presets via the 4x4 preset matrix on the Sub Phatty’s front panel. This matrix also doubles as a control panel for the instrument’s subcutaneous nerve center — users can select filter poles, set pitch bend amounts, toggle between legato glide modes, and more. These functions can also be accessed via the included Sub Phatty standalone/plugin editor.

The configuration of the Sub Phatty’s mixer section allows users to easily determine, at any given moment, which sources overdrive the filter and which simply pass through it. The mixer section further hosts controls for a square wave sub oscillator; those operating the Sub Phatty can utilize this tool as a third oscillator for added depth, or to craft their own customized incarnations of monstrous Moog bass. Also in the mixer section is a noise generator voiced to deliver rich, punchy low-frequency content, designed for analog percussion and sound effects.

In honor of the Sub Phatty’s release, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam Fuchs collaborated on a psychedelic short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. Flying Lotus’s original score was made primarily with the Sub Phatty synthesizer and dynamically shows off its bold sound. This unique animation can be viewed on Moog’s website at www.moogmusic.com/animation.
The Sub Phatty brings a fearless new voice to the Moog family of synthesizers. With its streamlined interface and dynamic sound design flexibility, this new synth fuses an unparalleled connection between human & machine, opening the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.
