Sound of Science Featuring Tom Carpenter of Analogue Solutions & Rezfilter

Sound of Science: "Hydrodome" teaser video! (feat. John Von Ahlen of Parralox)
Published on Feb 24, 2013

Quick note: as you know, I normally do not post music on MATRIXSYNTH for the sake of music.   All posts are ultimately about synth spotting and synth demos.  I do make the exception for manufacturers as they give you some insight into the music they make.  Tom Carpenter is the man behind Analogue Solutions and Medic. He along with Jason aka Rezfilter who brought us some great demo videos for Analogue Solutions is working on a new release under their moniker Sound of Science.

"Here's a teaser video for our upcoming single, 'Hydrodome' by Sound of Science.

Single and remixes coming soon!

Marsynth Modular 12-15-12

Published on Feb 24, 2013

"This is the second to last patch of 2012 on the modular (that I almost forgot about...). This was my first go at finally doing a video of the modular with a proper audio recording.

There are essentially two main 'parts' in this patch that are distinctly different in sound but share some interconnected modulation sources. It was fun playing with the balance of the two.

Some empress super delay and ehx catherdral were added to open it up a little.

Thanks for watching!

Semi-NOVA Modified Roland SH-101 with FM, Audio In, LFO speed mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This is a Roland SH-101 that has three of the NOVA mods installed. Audio input to the filter, three LFO speed settings, and the FM mod.

Taken from the NOVA MOD page:

-LFO Rate Scalar
A three-way toggle switch scales the overall range of the SH-101’s internal LFO Clk (the existing LFO rate slider still
functions normally). The scalar settings are Normal/Low/High.
In the Low setting, a cycle of 30 seconds can be attained. This is great for mild changes in “trance” type music.
In the High mode, up to 1200Hz can be used to create interesting cross-mod bell like sounds. Perfect for “industrial”
music and clanging metallic sounds. High mode works especially well when creating a synthetic kick drum patch or
short-wave radio sounds a la Kraftwerk’s Electric Cafe and Radioactivity albums respectively.

External Audio Input
A 1/4” jack and toggle switch allows external audio to be injected. A rotary pot controls the amplitude of the injected
signal. It can be routed directly into the filter along with the OSC’s waveforms. External processing of audio through the VCF and ENV is
a typical feature on some synths however a separate trigger can be applied to fire the SH-101’s envelope.

VCF FM
VCF FM is the most powerful NOVA-MOD feature. It can be used in moderation to simply add brightness to a bass
patch with low frequencies (due to subtractive synthesis). Or it can be used to create powerful cross-mod sounds that
are difficult to explain...they must be heard. These sounds are somewhat aggressive, distorted, bell like but most
importantly, not attainable on a regular SH-101. These sounds are similar to those heard on a MiniMoog with its third
LFO assigned.
One example: Dial a patch with only a ramp waveform assigned but at the same time, modulate the VCF Cutoff with
the Pulsewidth. Manually change the pulsewidth to vary the FM effect. It is quite unique. You can then switch in Sub
Osc -2 Oct. Pulse as the FM source then adjust the -1oct/-2oct/-2oct switch to change the sound further. Finally swing
the Pulsewidth waveform as the FM source but switch from Manual to LFO modulation and then play with the PW
Mod’s waveform.

The synth's power button has been replaced as it had the dreaded tuning drift problem, which FIXED all the stability issues. Works like a charm, sounds AMAZING as usual..."

Cyndustries Zeroscillator - Eurorack / Doepfer Synth Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"About the Zeroscillator:
Dr. John Chowning first described FM Synthesis technique in 1967. Since that time, no analog quadrature oscillator with through-zero capability and dynamic linear FM control has been commercially available... until now!

Cyndustries is proud to announce a major breakthrough in analog VCO design, the amazing Zeroscillator.

Liquid Smooth Analog Design

The Zeroscillator is a full-featured electronic-music-quality analog VCO capable of linear frequency modulation through zero hertz and into negative frequencies. This makes it capable of the FM Synthesis stuff, wild and crazy sounds simply not available from traditional VCOs, and timbres not available from digital FM synthesizers. Of course, Zeroscillators also make insane LFOs!

Traditional FM Synthesis oscillator implementations, such as the DX-7, are sine wave only. The Zeroscillator also makes available sawtooth, reverse saw, triangle, pulse (with PWM), and a special set of four quadrature outputs capable of unique bi-phase wave morphing, (more on that later).

Look Ma'... No Aliasing!

FM sounds take on their vibrant life when the amount of modulation is varied dynamically. In the analog world, this requires a special VCA to regulate the depth of frequency modulation, (often called the "modulation index"). Since this is required almost universally for Linear FM patches, the Zeroscillator has this VCA built-in. We decided however, to take this feature one extra step beyond and provide you with a four-quadrant multiplier instead of a traditional two-quadrant VCA to expand your modulation possibilities into the unexplored. The output of this multiplier is available at the panel, so you get a free ring-mod function and an interesting pick-off point for self-modulation patches called Mod Out.

In addition to it's precision 10-turn tuning knob, the Zeroscillator has 1V/octave plus attenuated exponential inputs and can behave just like the VCOs you're used to. You are not forced into any specific modality and are free to use all or any subset of its 7 different modulations:

1-Exponential FM
2-Linear Through-Zero FM
3-Linear FM Dynamic Depth Modulation
4-Bi-Phasic Waveform Morphing in Quadrature
5-Pulse Width Modulation
6-Variable Sync (from none to hard synch)
7-Time Reversal

"This mid-size dotcom modular system is offered in excellent condition, fully working with no marks or scratches. Also included in the auction is a Moog Minimoog Voyager Anniversary Edition, signed by Bob Moog himself. I bought the Moog just before Bob Moog sadly passed away in 2005.
In addition to all the complexity offered by the dotcom system, and the classic format of the Voyager, I have customized a Moog C-351 CV expander, and made a panel to include it in the dotcom rack. The finish is every bit as professional as the rest of the system. By connecting the Voyager with the multicore cable, it's CV's, LFO's, envelopes, noise, and a comprehensive range of controllers become patchable on the front panel. I have also added extra multiples on spare panel space. The build quality of both the dotcom and the Moog is of very high standard, and of course you get that classic rich Moog sound, with a total of 5 Oscillators available.

"This Mini is fully functional, and has been well used over the past forty years (I've had it for about twenty.) It has the older, more desirable oscillator card and the Moog Music label. It has recently been recapped, so all electrolytics are new and in no danger of failure! The power cord has also been changed, as the old one was dangerously frayed and crumbling. Electronic Sound Artist Laetitia Sonami, a Documentary on Kickstarter

via Kickstarter where you'll find additional details and can help fund the project.

"the ear goes to the sound: the work of Laetitia Sonami is a film portrait of the French born, Oakland based electronic sound artist Laetitia Sonami. Sonami, a student of the pioneering sound composer Eliane Radigue, is perhaps best known for her Lady’s Glove instrument, which controls sounds and mechanical objects with gestures of the hand. I hope that this film will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of women working at the intersection of technology and art.

This documentary offers an intimate look at one of the most extraordinary, yet underappreciated electronic sound artists of today, and is structured around an intricate combination of performance and in-studio demonstration. The film features interviews with acclaimed composers John Bischoff, Maggi Payne, Eliane Radigue, and writer Melody Sumner Carnahan, and includes never-before-seen and rare performance footage from the early 1990’s to the present..."

WMD PDO Phase Displacement Oscillator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

See Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS) for more.

"Introducing the WMD Phase Displacement Oscillator (PDO). This hybrid VCO has all the feel of an analog VCO but with the benefits of digital waveshaping. The PDO will easily find a home in your system!

The PDO exists to utilize the phenomenon of Phase Modulation (PM). This allows for the relative phase difference of its outputs to be set or modulated, producing very interesting sounds. The result is similar to Frequency Modulation (FM) but affects the output to a greater degree without affecting the stability of the initial frequency.

PM has the same benefits of quadrature filters/sine wave generators and greatly exceeds their capabilities at audio rate modulations. PM is highly useful for for creating metallic and bell tones and very controlled harmonic interactions.

Because PM affects the relative phase and not the frequency of the waveform generated, the PDO can self modulate its PM inputs. Thils creates complex harmonic signals that seem to vary in frequency but are quite stable.

Phase Modulation is also quite powerful when using the PDO as an LFO. Adjusting the relative phase of each output allows for very precise modulation of other modules. Each output can have any of the available waveforms simultaniously. There is a myriad of modulation possible with the PDO!

Controls and I/O

The PDO's analog VCO should feel familiar and intuitive.

1V/Oct Input - Calibrated input for pitch control. The VCO will track at least 5 octaves using this input.

Sync Input - Rising edge sawtooth reset/sync input. Does not affect slope of sawtooth. Use as LFO reset also.

Coarse & Fine Knobs - Coarse knob adjusts the frequency of the VCO throughout its full range. Use the Fine knob to tune the oscillator within approximately 1/3 octave range.

Exp FM - This input jack and bipolar attenuator provide exponential FM to the VCO. This input is DC coupled.

Lin FM - This input jack and bipolar attenuator provide linear FM to the VCO. This input can be DC or AC coupled. A jumper on the back enables DC coupling when in place. We recommend AC coupling to prevent frequency shift caused by the bipolar attenuator's offset voltage.

Phase Modulation Inputs (Φ)

Phase Inputs (ΦCV) - The PDO has three phase inputs, one for each channel: 2, 3 and 4. These inputs can use any type of signal. Each phase input has a bipolar attenuator, turned CW past center for positive modulation, turned CCW past center for inverse modulation.

Phase Offset (Φ) - These controls set the relative phase of each channel, from 0 degrees to + or - 360 degrees. This control is added to the ΦCV input and acts as a bias level control when there is an input.

Outputs

Out1 - Out4 - These are the outputs for each channel, the current level is displayed at the top of the module by a green LED.

Sum Output - This output takes all four of the outputs and sums them together. Out2 and Out3 are always summed to this output. Out1 and Out4 are normaled through the jack. So plugging into Out1 or Out4 will remove that signal from the Sum Output.

Staircase Output (SC Out) - This output jack is the result of the relative phases of the three phase input channels compared to the analog sawtooth waveform. It forms a staircase type output (multiple square waves added together).

"This is my beautifully constructed Music From Outer Space SoundLab Minisynth, built by TecBug in the UK into a compact black tolex covered mini combo amp cabinet.

The synth has two audio oscillators which go to low and hypersonic frequencies, white noise, switchable LP/BP filter, AD/ASR envelope, and LFO. Many modulation routings including envelopes to filter, LFO to Pulse Width and so on are included for some great sound manipulation options.

An extra panel offers audio output and CV/Gate in for use with a CV keyboard or sequencer. UK power supply included.

Speakers and echo heard on the demo are not built in. Full info is on the Music From Outer Space website, I don't have a handbook but the synth is functioning exactly as seen in this demo - I think I understand all the functions except AR Repeat On, which may or may not be functioning as intended.

Contact me direct in London to purchase. I will ship inside or outside the UK after cash or bank transfer payment - I don't accept PayPal.

A Note on the Modular Battle Videos

Just a quick note on the Modular Battle videos. As you can imagine the number of videos that go up on YouTube will likely increase significantly over time.  To prevent MATRIXSYNTH from getting overrun by them, I'll likely pick one or two each day the same way I'd pick other videos that go up. It's all good imo, but not everything can go up, so I do my best to keep MATRIXSYNTH balanced.  There is an unspoken recipe for what goes up over time and it changes with time.  The gist of it is in the Posting Guidelines, but there actually is a little more to it in order to ensure the most interesting bits get to you. But don't worry, when Battle 2 is complete I'll either put up one master post with all of the videos including those missed or I'll point you to the list on knoobz.com. I'd recommend following http://www.twitter.com/ModularBattle for the latest news on the battle.
