MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST: Detachment 3 Archangel & Atomic Shadow Update

Another reason to make it to the MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST next Saturday if you are in the area. Atomic Shadow will be bringing two Detachment 3 Archangel sequencers, one 1/4" and one 3.5mm. If you want to see one in the flesh and are in the area, be sure to drop by.  Look for lots of knobs and the red strip.  See the Detachment 3 label below for additional posts of the Archangel including video.

Update: Unfortunately Atomic Shadow and the Archangel won't be making it this year due to unforeseen circumstances.

Bartok String Quartet Number 2 Realized on the MFOS Modular

Published on Mar 8, 2013 Ray Wilson·50 videos
Update: "BETTER VIDEO" video Re-Published on Mar 10, 2013

"I'm working on a new CD of classical and original synth work. Since Bartok is not in the public domain yet I can't put this on the CD. I think this sounds soooo cooool. It's worth listening to the whole thing because there are so many crazy sounding parts. This is Bartok's String Quartet Number 2. Video was produced with CyberLink PowerDirector 11. This piece bears very little resemblance to the string quartet version. It is entirely synth voiced."

New Description: "Bartok's wild string quartet as interpreted through the MFOS modular synthesizer driven via MIDI. Kudos to the designers of the visualization software in Media Player. Produced by Ray Wilson with SONAR X1 and CyberLink PowerDirector 11."

"It has the same sound engine as the very expensive Q synthesizer, however, there are less controls on the front panel and polyphony is limited to 25 simultaneous notes. Also functions as a vocoder..."

There are other differences as well including the ability to morph between the two filters settings on the Q while on the microQ you can only switch between them.  Regardless, the microQ is a powerful engine and aside from the differences is essentially the same as the Q.

The following are the differences from this Sound on Sound review:

"HOW THE MICRO Q DIFFERS FROM THE Q

• No Xphorm (morph) function.
• No CV/Pedal inputs.
• No step sequencer.
• No continuous filter routing — serial or parallel switch with no 'in-between' settings.
• The second effects unit is a global effect and is the only effect with delay.

• The maximum delay time is reduced from that available on the Q.
• Dynamic voice structure can yield up to 25 voices.
• Expandable to up to 75 voices (although the hardware option to do this is not yet available).
• In Multitimbral Mode, up to five effects can be used in total, four effects for the first four parts, and one global effect with adjustable mix level in each instrument.
• No digital output."

Using an A-145 LFO as Swing Generator

Published on Mar 8, 2013 NetPierreTV·39 videos

"Short PatchPierre Tutorial
more info soon at http://patchpierre.blogspot.nl/

In the video the TB-303 is playing, the A-100 is playing the same pattern via the TB-303's CV Output.
The Gate from the TB-303 is fed into the Reset In on the A-145 so each time this module receives a Gate signal, it starts a new cycle.
Slow LFO cycles (Low mode) will result in longer envelopes and faster LFO's will result in interesting (swinging) rhythmical discoveries.

Equipment used: Doepfer A-100 system,A-145 LFO and A-124 WASP filter plus Roland TB-303, Machinedrum

The String Machine project

via Toni Gutiérrez Ortiz on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/matrixsynth/posts/613436698683476:

"The String Machine project

Now that a ensemble chorus processor like the élkorus v3 is available I can announce the beginning of the 'String Machine project' at the Wutierson site. Since some time I have the idea of collecting basic waveform audio samples of different string machines with chorus turned off, to sample it and obtain a precise emulation using an elkorus.

http://www.wutierson.com/en/news/101-string-machine-project

More sounds will be available very soon! Stay connected!"

Currently you'll find samples of the Logan String Melody, Roland VP330, and Solina String Ensemble.

The elkorus is by Synthoma. See the label below for previous posts.

The Birth of the Prophet VS

via LordFrito's Corner of the Web where you'll find the full post.

"The Birth of the Prophet VS
By Chris Meyer, ex-employee of Sequential Circuits
originally printed in the VS WaveWrangler User Guide, (c)1991 Interval Music Systems
updated 7/99 and 6/01 by the original author

The Idea

It all started some time in 1985. We were still working on the Prophet 2000 sampler, and as resident historian (in other words, I had the biggest archive of synth magazines and manuals), another engineer asked me to explain how various instruments performed waveform crossfades.

I had finished discussing the Fairlight, and had moved on the PPG - explaining its wavetables, and the ability for it to scan a group of waves first in one direction and then back again. While I was scrawling this back and forth motion in my notebook, suddenly a little twinge went off in the back of my head, and my hand drew the next line arcing down the page...and the concept of crossfading between waves in two dimensions, not just one, was born.

Trying to imagine what it would sound like to wander around a space with different waves in each corner was a little beyond most people's grasp at the time. So, I decided to patch it up at home on my rag-tag modular synthesizer..."

The Magnetic Cello: Two Demos and an Explanation

Published on Mar 7, 2013

http://www.Magnetovore.com

"Two short demos and then an explanation of the Magnetic Cello.
After four years of development, the instrument is finally finished and something I'd be proud to sell. There are currently only three full version Magnetic Cellos, and a few lucky musicians will be able to buy the instruments soon.

Check out Michael's other cello videos at http://www.youtube.com/vgcellomusic"

"The instrument is, of course, still experimental, and there are around 5 or 6 thousand little things I would change in how I built these instruments. But it is no longer a 'prototype'. I’m finally confident that this is an instrument an adventurous musician could pick up and play. And I’m confident that he could play both old classical pieces (in a somewhat different way) and wacky new sounds not possible on other instruments..."

Some of you might remember The Magnetic Cello from this post back in April of 2012.
