"Couldn't find a tutorial or sheets anywhere so I was forced to do this classic entirely by ear so I hope I got it right. All sounds including the wannabe sax are stock Roland Fantom G sounds that I tweaked.
The original was purportedly recorded using a Prophet 5 and the sound is hard to reproduce on a rompler. The keyboard patch I made was based on a waveform called warm pad."

Back From The MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST
And I am back... This year's SYNTHFEST was the best. More posts will follow, but now I need to catch up on the day's non-SYNTHFEST posts. Some of what you have to look forward to is the I Dream of Wires presentation with some insight on what to expect from the film aside from the interviews (you can thank me for asking - I think I got caught on film but I did try to hide to not ruin the experience for anyone). After that I captured a walkthrough of the event areas (camera induced nausea coming your way - it's always that way when you do a flyby of everything). I caught some of Craig Padilla's performance on video, Dave Bristow's talk on his time at Yamaha starting with the CS80 and on through the history of Yamaha FM synthesis and the launch of the DX7. Dave's talk was the absolute highlight for me. This is synth history in its essence. It's something you will not find anywhere else and it comes from the man that was there, working for Yamaha giving feedback on their designs prior to the public ever knowing a thing. There are tons of funny moments and interesting behind the scenes stories in this one. You do not want to miss it. After that I captured some of Computer Controlled's performance with a Cyclone Analogic TT-303 and Elektron Octatrack. The TT-303? It sounded amazing. I am sold. I ended with some time tweaking the John Bowen Solaris, specifically focusing on the rotars. As always these posts are not meant to be polished, they are meant to be raw and they are meant to bring you to the event. If you have ever been to one including NAMM you will understand. If you haven't been to one, you'll get a taste for what these events are like. This one was truly special. I can't wait for the next! Now back to regular programming. SYNTHFEST posts will follow soon after.

Yonac Releases miniSynth 2
"Back in 2008 when the App Store was very young, Yonac released miniSynth, the very first iOS synthesizer. Compact and user-friendly, it introduced hundreds of thousands of iOS users to synths and paved the way for the great things to come in mobile music making.
We have come a long way since, continuing innovation with our flagship synth Magellan. As our apps grow more and more sophisticated, we wanted to also continue the heritage of the original app that started it all. So, here with all its elegant simplicity is miniSynth 2.
miniSynth 2 continues the spirit of the original, adding advancements we made in DSP, design and features over the last half decade. Simple and easy to use, miniSynth 2 projects a solid, fat tone from a strategic feature set -- an "abbreviation" of the sophisticated features we offer in our pro-grade synthesizers.
Like all our synthesizers, no compromises are made with sound and functionality. There are NO samples used, just real-time virtual analog synthesis.
miniSynth 2 also includes production-friendly features, such as Audiobus output, audio copy/paste, and a MIDI In port for playing miniSynth with an external controller or a virtual-MIDI app.
For the iOS pro and the novice alike, miniSynth 2 is intended as a back-to-basics synth answering the call when the inspiration strikes.
-- 32-bit professional quality DSP
-- Extremely low latency
-- Dual analog-modelling oscillators
-- Virtual-analog Low-Pass Filter with full ADSR and Contour
-- Amp ADSR
-- Delay
-- Reverb
-- Audio Backgrounding
-- Audiobus Output
-- MIDI In
-- Built-in tapedeck
-- Audio Copy/Paste
-- Soundcloud
-- 30 Factory Presets
-- Ability to save user presets in provided user banks"

"Just got back from a trip to europe, and stayed with my friend Julius, one of my friends who records for Compost. He has done some pretty cool projects [building a VST interface to Kraftwerk pioneer Florian Schneider's most recent vocoder purchase] as well as creating his own VST plugins for Mac / PC called Kammerl Kaske [http://www.kammerl.de/audio] The details of the Florian Schneider project -- About 2 years ago, Florian put the original Kraftwerk vocoder for sale on eBay [quite possibly one of the rarest eBay sales ever, at least for music equipment]. It wasn't that Kraftwerk was getting out of 'vocoding' but rather, he found one of the earliest vocoder projects out there. A professor at a German university in the speech department was building a rather large rack of about 32 drawers of band-pass filters that were aimed to create at one point, a vocoder. As the professor passed away some time ago, the speech department was looking to part ways with the project and Florian had come into contact with the university. He made an offer, and they sold him the remnants. Now there's another friend of Julius' that creates some rather crafty devices known as SND, aka Sebastian Niessen. He's most known for his SAM-16 sequencer, fixed filter banks and other fun stuff. Sebastian engineered the hardware, and Julius designed the software, and the result is this So as some "parting gifts" / compensation, Sebastian received one of the first Kraftwerk speech synths, and Julius received ONE of the FOUR MIDI Robovox units."

Vactrol Storm - Demo of Nyle Steiner's 24 Stage String Filter
Published on Mar 16, 2013 Mark Steiner·4 videos
"I learned recently of a sweepable 24 stage vactrol filter Nyle Steiner designed. He said he built about 12.
He found the one he has and plugged it in for the first time 15 years and we had a listen. It's just beautiful.
I told him I could find no information on line or even photos etc. of it and he let me borrow it to do a demo recording. This video is my demo of the device.
It was made to make violin/string sounds using it as a static filter with 24 band pass stages, but also can do some amazing effects with the stages being swept using 24 separate vactrols.
It's a pretty long, overproduced demo but I really wanted to capture a lot of aspects of this amazing filter. I played an A6 Andromeda, Steiner EVI, white noise, and also played a bovine acoustic simulation device into it (by popular request)."
Squeeze Ribbon Synthesizer - Modification of an Eowave Ribbon
Squeeze Ribbon Synthesizer - My modification of an Eowave Ribbon.
Published on Sep 30, 2012 Mark Steiner·4 videos
"Squeeze Ribbon. I added a squeeze nuance inducer to this Eowave Ribbon. More consistency of dynamics across a phrase of notes than the pressure sensor on the ribbon controller. This would be a great way to phrase an Ondes Martenot. This frees up the left hand for sound changes, another instrument, chords, hitchhiking etc.
A small pressure sensor should do the same thing, used this way, perhaps thumb against ring, or index finger or (as Dana Countryman suggested to me) thumb against the third finger. First test of this, could be refined but good proof of concept.
Special thanks to Nyle Steiner for adding CV routing into a Steiner EVI sound module to allow this and some other modifications I'm working on.
Have a look at 'ThePinesofMars.blogspot.com'."
