Richard Lainhart & Lucio Menegon - An Abandoned Garden Now Available

You might remember An Abandoned Garden by the late Richard Lainhart & Lucio Menegon from this post back in January. The limited edition vinyl release is now available. The music features Richard Lainhart on Buchla 200e & Hakkan Continuum and Lucio Menegon on lapsteel with processing. Their music is utterly mesmerizing.  You can listen to it via the play button to the left and under the album cover image here.

Lucio Menegon on the release and the support in picking up a copy of the vinyl:  "An Abandoned Garden, my first ambient release (with the late Richard Lainhart) is FINALLY here and available for purchase. Really. No more false alarms. Rubber City Noise went out of their way to make this 100 run LTD ED LP with digital download package top notch and this was the reason for the production delay. It's a great listen and supports both the label and the artist. Please visit the Experimedia website. For the uninitiated, $20-something dollars is the average price for new vinyl with download. With the current state of mostly free music and horrible (CD) sales, this is one of the few working models for small labels. If you want the digital, you must buy the high-quality, beautifully packaged short run vinyl. If the vinyl run sells out, RCN gets their money back and we get our digital rights back."

Atomic Shadow's Panoramic Wave Generator Coming to Kontakt

via Atomic Shadow

"Do you remember the early days of sampling? That was the inspiration for the Panoramic Wave Generator. I still have an old Akai S-612 and it is one of those things that I never get tired of. You can take a sound and stretch it across the entire keyboard. Depending on your sound it can sound like a howling demon in the low registers or a shrieking bird of prey on the high notes. Of course it has something like 2 seconds of sampling time.

The sounds that come come with the PWG Have no such time limits, They are long, evolving stereo sounds. They are mapped somewhere in the middle range of the keyboard, looped, and then assigned across 5 octaves. Most of the sounds are well over two minutes. They mutate and modulate over time. When they are played in the lower registers it can take quite awhile for it to to play out. One fingered drones anyone?

The sound design made good use of a collection of field recordings that goes back for years. There are machines in action and machines in the their last moments of dying agony. There are many sounds that use the Command Center's collection of exotic old test gear. Sine and square wave generators, modular filters, ring modulators and a good dose of some top secret gear that cannot be disclosed. Some of the sounds are very playable as pitched instruments while others are far out in soundscape territory. There are sounds that hiss. Sounds that crackle and moan. You can hear the electricity moving around in there.

The user interface is simple though it gives you far more control than my old Akai. There is an LFO section to modulate the sound, tone control, an envelope section and a velocity and balance adjustment on the top row. The lower section is for effects. We start off with a chorus, flanger or phaser. Follow that with a delay with width control and end up with a reverb section with three types of convolution to choose from. There is a great deal that can be done to these very simple controls. Of course my suggestion is to run this machine through other machines in your own collection, or abuse it with your favorite plug.

The Panoramic Tone Generator will be available very soon."

Dirty Electronics Mute Synth Mod by A.S.M.O.

via this auction

"This is my first hardwired mod of the Dirty Electronics Mute Synth. The Mute Synth was originally commissioned by Mute Records for the Mute Short Circuit weekend at the Roundhouse, London in May 2011. This mod is the precursor to a more extensive mod I later built for Daniel Miller, this version has all the touch panels wired to pots for precise pitch and pulser / sequencer control. The Mute logo is etched into the copper of the Mute synth. Also added is a single LFO with speed and depth controls which can be switched to modulate either of the 2 oscillators or feedback. Whilst not as extensive of my later mod it still packs a punch, I've used it in many of my solo live performances and also with the Dirty Electronics Ensemble, I'm selling it to make space for an even more heavily modded version I'm working on, such is progress :) The pictures and video below [posted here] were taken when I originally built it, I've slightly modified it since, the filter switch has been removed and replaced with an LED to indicate the LFO speed (as can be seen in the main listing photo) and the LFO itself has been tweaked. The copper has also oxidised with use since, so is not as shiny as it is in these pictures. The Soundcloud recording above is as it sounds now.

Abeem Live Technologies updates Rack Performer to 0.99-beta

"Abeem Live Technologies has updated Rack Performer to version 0.99-beta.

This new version includes several important new features, mostly centered around MIDI and connectivity.

External instruments and effects can be controlled by adding instances of the new 'External MIDI Gear' special module to the patch. This module acts as a bridge between the application and the external gear. It can be mapped and automated like any standard module, and appropriate MIDI messages are automatically sent to the controlled gear.

The new "MIDI output turbo mode" option greatly improves MIDI output events timing and reduces jitter by dedicating one CPU core to the task. This option works especially well when coupled with the "aggressive scheduler timing" advanced option. Both options are enabled by default when available on the host machine.

Incoming MIDI events can be filtered by type at three levels (per MIDI input device, per input channel or per module) and all modules can have MIDI effects applied to their inputs. The simple included effects allow to easily create keyboard splits, layers and merges.

MIDI can be freely routed between modules (interlinks) and plugins operating in pure MIDI mode (ex: VST sequencers) are now supported.

A lot of other improvements are also included.

Yamaha CS-40M Program Stepper Mod

via Akikaze

"Here's an interesting mod I have had installed into my Yamaha CS-40M. It uses the portamento pedal input. A stereo plug is inserted. Portamento input is still available using tip-sleeve and the stepper using ring-sleeve. The program stepper can step backward and forward through its memories, one at the time. Depressing the pedal for one second makes the program step forward; depressing it for about two seconds makes the program step backward. Jumpers are available for selecting a normal open or a normal closed switch (1), for stepping through one of either bank or both banks (2) and for stepping forard or forward and backward (3). Here are some pictures and documentation."

Otherworldly bleeps & bloops, thunderous growls & other strange noises can be found as well as some really lush strings, hard hitting brass, & thick tasty bass. It's a rare beast & and it does show a little bit of wear (a few scratches, the plastic has faded a little), but everything functions as it should to the best of my knowledge. The 4 pots on the left were designed to be used exclusively with the wind controller. AFAIK only the BEND pot has been found to actually affect certain patches without it, and even then only a little though there may be a setting that can be made to give it more range..."  Anyone confirm?
